What’s the next Turnpike Troubadours anthem I should check out?
Great stuff, Burt. One of my favorite bands. They have dozens of good ones, but I'll suggest Unrung and/or Pay No Rent
@@sethsinclair5161 thanks Seth! I’ll add that to the list!
Gin, Smoke and lies
@@LowJoe73 may be the best song name ever.
Too many good turnpike songs. "Empty as a drum" is one of my all time favorite songs. Would love to see it on your channel
This is one of the few bands I can put all 4 of their albums on shuffle and never hear a bad song. My suggestion would be do an hour long reaction to the entire Diamonds and Gasoline album. By the time you get to the final song, you will explode in sheer joy 😆
I’m so blessed I got to see them twice before they “took a break”. I agree 100% it’s 1 or maybe 3 artists I can just throw on shuffle. My favorite song is whole damn town or KC southern. Wbu?
They do put on a hell of a live show. I'm so excited they're back. Excited and relieved. Evan scared us all.
The way the chorus picks up rises and rocks out on the studio version is incredible
“The funeral” is my favorite by them. You gotta dig into some more Whiskey Myers and Cody Jinks.
Yeah I’ve been meaning to check that one out!
Definitely, Whiskey Myers & Cody Jinks! Jinks has gone RIAA platinum on album "Loud and Heavy." Huge for a non mainstream artist not played on radio or with a major record label.
"The Funeral" is my favorite too! Very underrated. Such great writing by Evan!
The Funeral plays out like a movie in my head everytime I hear it. Such a great song!
"1968" and "Gin, Smoke, Lies" are two of my favorites from Turnpike Troubadours.
You might look into Eleven Hundred Springs (maybe "Every Time I get Close to You") if you like a full band sound.
Thunderbird will do just fine
Watching the way you react to music. Like a good piece of pie that you’ve smelt while it was cooking earlier and the pay off of the first bite is worth it… I get it man.
So happy they are back together this is real Texas red dirt music loved growing up half my life where they ran around when they were my age
The housefire is a great song of theirs tells a story with a great message
I always liked to think the “I know” response to being told “I love you” was a Star Wars reference. Probably not-but it’s what I’d LIKE to think.
you nailed it! when he said i know you will soon see he was full of himself. im sure by now you have seen this live. its so much better.
Empty As A Drum if you want a little different sound. Before The Devil Knows Your Dead or Gin Smoke Lies if you want the same big sound.
Empty as a Drum is straight genius! I second this suggestion!
Thanks for turning me on to these guys. I really like their sound.
If you haven't heard Railroad Earth yet, I'd recommend you do.
Very unique mix of sounds; by very talented musicians.
Gin smoking lies, diamonds and gasoline, and before the devil knows we're dead. If you will listen to those three songs you will agree that this is the greatest band that ever walked on the face of the fu$#@ing earth
one of the best intros to any song ever.
Man so happy you listened to it!! If you want heart felt lyrics you gotta do the funeral
Got it high up the list for sure!
I f-ing love this song
Thanks Burt. Another gem. Between you and another couple of country reaction channels and UA-cams algorithms, I’m finding amazing tunes.
👍
It would be awesome if they ended their indefinite hiatus to start having shows again! So many great songs to check out but I recommend:
Gin, Smoke, Lies
Long Hot Summer Day
Every Girl
7 & 7
Easton & Main
Bossier City
A Tornado Warning
Unrung
Just saw them in Texas tonight. I've missed them! Great show as always!!
How was it?
@@SongwriterReacts it was great, and they haven't missed a beat. The venue had about 7,500 people there singing along. I was able to go last minute because a friend's friend backed out so I got pretty lucky. Every show I tried to get tickets for the site either crashed when people were getting in line or sold out within a few min. Thank God he friend didn't go lol. Last show I saw before they stopped playing was down in Corpus during a storm. Between the music, the rain on the tin roof and people singing, it was defining. It was one of the best shows that I had ever been to.
There is a lot of alliteration in this song, I really like that.
The funeral is another good one by them. It was co written with Mike McClure who would also be a good one to look into (I know, I already mentioned him in an older video sorry I just love the dude)
7&7 is one that will stick with you as a man. You'll be taken back to nostalgic memories of your teens.
Personally, the story in this song really struck a chord with me. I can relate of being with guys who I had made up in my head to be someone wonderful because we had fun while " barely breaking even." There is something about being young and in love with a charming, good looking rebel that your friends and family don't like. Subconsciously, you want to prevail and prove them wrong. Unfortunately, the guy turned out to be okay with drunken nights of gambling and couch surfing while the woman (it was once me!) realized that it really wasn't all that fun anymore. The rush and exhilaration of life on the edge just didn't cut it anymore. I liked this song and the musicians did a great job.
such a good story teller!
No doubt!
I'm so glad I found this group! Lind of late but oh well. Their music is timeless and incredible. I love your reaction and how you catch the good parts and can appreciate the genius and powerful abilities they have in writing such good music!!
Great song !! One of my favorites. I hope to hear you react to Shovels and Rope “Birmingham” sometime
I love Shovels and Rope! Seen em a few times and wish I could go back to hearing Birmingham for the first time again!
Cant go wrong with gin, smoke, and lies. That's my favorite from them
Hi Burt! Three things:
1) I want to make sure you know that Turnpike is on an indefinite hiatus since May 2019. It's sad, but seeing you talk about seeing them live, I had to make sure you knew.
2) Next from Turnpike, check out "The Housefire"!
3) I would love to see you react to "Wildfire" by Mandolin Orange! Their entire Tiny Desk concert is amazing, but I'm told it isn't usable for reaction videos, so here's another performance of that song: ua-cam.com/video/CTAKdXoeOlk/v-deo.html
Cheers!
Evan is clean and sober and back with his wife now. He did a couple of TT songs recently with a friend's band. He sounds great. Gave no timeline for returning to the road. Fiddler Kyle Nix released his own CD last year. He's very good.
I didn’t even know mustache Evan Felker existed
Now that you've met Lorrie you need to listen to The Mercury. So many great Turnpike songs - Every Girl, Pay No Rent, Unrung, House Fire, etc. And of course Bird Hunter but looks like you have already found that one.
pay no rent is the most epic happy sounding sad songs
One of my favorite Turnpike songs! The characters in this song are featured in a few other of their songs as well. So much to dig into with this band! For another "big sound" song of there's, you can't go wrong with "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" live!
Fall Out of Love by Turnpike Troubadours has one of the best verses I've ever heard. Pure lyricism.
Well you bet your heart on a diamond
And I played the clubs in spades
We gambled and lost
Guess we both paid the cost
Look what a mess I have made
Well how did we fall out of love?
TT are insane live man
You got that right! I just saw them five days ago - Macon, GA. Atrium Health Ampitheatre. Was my first TT concert. I’m already planning to go see them again. They are an incredible live band. They had 10,000 people dancing and singing to every song. A MUST see!!
Biggest life lesson I've learned is that it can always go more wrong 😂
I wish he sang the chorus on the album version like he does on the live version. The “good lord lorrie I love you could it go more wrong” keeping it low and chill until the end. Makes the end more impactful and I think it sounds really cool.
Thanks!
Really appreciate that kindness Jeff!
I know this video is a year old, but you talked about huge full sound…check out Shane Smith & The Saints. Coast, Feather in The Wind, or The Mountain.
Some more Oklahoma boys, I've caught these guys in Tulsa multiple times...good stuff!
Empty as a Drum, Shreveport, Quit while I'm Ahead, Down Here, and every other song mentioned. So far, other than small part of Good Lord Laurie, you haven't profiled anything demonstrating his clever use if alliteration. It's genius and so catchy. BTW, how come nobody in CA have heard of these guys. I got lucky and heard Good Lord Laurie on Pandora some years ago and have been hooked ever since.
Perfect example of Red Dirt the music that's keeping country music alive and well 🤘
Have you done Shakey Graves's Late July?
A Tornado Warning paints a great mental image
Every Girl... Gin, Smoke, Lies... Diamonds and Gasoline... Quit While I'm Ahead
Broooooo how have you not done I'm Makin It or The Devil is a Woman or Riders by Bishop Gunn? They're from Natchez.
Check out gin, smoke and lies.but as a musician you REALLY need to check out Jason Boland. I’d start with hard times are relative
Certainly hope ya try The Bird Hunters and Long Drive Home by these fellas . ❤️
Already got one for ya! ua-cam.com/video/WA9sX6I_uxk/v-deo.html
Welcome to the Turnpike bandwagon. I, too, am a die hard AA fan. Evan just played his first show back recently, check it out!
I had no idea! Got a link for me?
ua-cam.com/video/wQnZBYc7tB4/v-deo.html
Man, I just have to say that Evan Felker is my all-time favorite songwriter of Americana or any genre. The Funeral, 7 & 7, The Birdhunters...nothing but great American short stories, brother!
Love this man, saw Am Aquarium and Turnpike at the Cain’s Ballroom a few years ago and it blew my tits off!
What a lineup!
Diamonds & Gasoline!!!!
Lorrie comes back as the character in many of his songs...but not always, makes her seem based on some reality
Evan felker is the best writer of breakup songs there is
Definitely
Scuzz twittley interview" lol its spot on!
definitely check out The Funeral or Before the devil knows we’re dead. the funeral is probably their best works lyrical wise
Red dirt babyyyy
I've been listening to Turnpike for 5 years now, at least. They are one of the greatest when it comes to placing music with lyrics. Listen to the lyrics. Try playing "The Funeral."
You should check out "Whisky in Your Water" from The Next Waltz". Pure greatness!
“You ain’t half of who I thought you was…” if I had a dollar every time a women said that to me…
Life of my story
Great stuff! Love TTs. Check out 7 & 7. Might be my fav song by them. Lyrics hit close to home for me
Something to hold onto or bossier city are my favorites
Hey Burt please, please do another shakey graves from the audio tree sessions. Roll the bones was really good but a couple others from that set are unbelievable. I really like built to roam and word of mouth!! If you enjoyed how intense he was in roll the bones you’ll love either of those!!
please excuse my being absolute but what is going on with turnpike currently I think that I heard that Evan was in some kind of rehab but he was writing and getting ready to tour again very soon
Great song Burt. If you want to listen to the words in a different way check out Evans solo acoustic version Live from the Back Pasture. As for what song is next? There’s too damn many but 7&7, Gin Smoke & Lies, Funeral, Diamonds & Gasoline and Doreen are some crowd favs. Keep it up brother.
Great song! Just stumbled onto your channel, love your stuff! If you haven't yet you should check out the Steeldrivers. Chris Stapleton sung at least on their first album. A couple favorites of mine are "Blue Side of the Mountain" and "If It Hadn't been for Love"
Something in the middle Cody jinks
Keep up the great stuff man! Give Charley Crockett and Nick Shoulders a listen whenever you can a lot of people don’t know about them but should!
10k views and 250 likes?!?! Come on people help Burt out!!!!
Thanks bud!
Burt, check out todd day wait. I just heard him a few days ago and he has an amazing old school sound to him.
Southeastern Son! So good.
Sounds like right up my alley!
I would like to hear your take on Evangeline and Pay No Rent. Enjoy hearing your take on the music and lyrics.
i highly recommend “a tornado warning” it’s a feel good love song
First time seeing your channel but I really liked the video a guy not a lot of people know about but who writes some great songs is Adam carol and I would suggest Oklahoma Gypsy shuffler or rice birds
Before the devil knows were dead!!
If you’re ever in the mood to react to another Colter Wall song, my recommendation would be his cover of the late Jimmie Rodgers tune “Mule Skinner Blues” (also covered by many others, most notably The Fendermen and Dolly Parton). Thanks!
A TORNADO WARNING
You should check out Jamie Johnson. Think you enjoy his song writing and singing too.
Yooooo, who the hell throws, not just one but two, 5/4 measures into a country song?? "Guess her folks were right!"
Hey man I’d love to see you review Beth hart and joe bonamassa on “I’ll take care of you” at the beacon theater.
You should do Drayton Farley pitchin’ fits!!
Bluegrass Americana man not country... Country can't compete. And they are amazing live, too bad they aren't playing atm
UNRUNG UNRUNG UNRUNG
Whiskey myers - bitch. Song about bubblegum truck country
Good suggestions here but there isn't a bad turnpike song.
Gotta be "7 and 7"
Every girl is my favorite
I don't think they are together no more
Check out basket case by gethin jenkins
Next song: 1968.
these guys live are tremendous. i got to work a handful of their shows down in baton rouge. one of my favorite things about him is he is a melody changers. that is not at all how that chorus is recorded. makes the shows very fun!
Lol like this?
ME
I love you babe. And don't get all weird
about it
Him:
I know and |won't so what you going to do
I am not in any kinda mind to be with anyone
right know you no
Pay no rent
Turnpike is good man. Jinks and whiskey myers might be better brother
