Love it! I'm from De Queen, Arkansas and this is the song that got me started on Turnpike for obvious reasons. Some context that may help paint the picture a little better...De Queen/Sevier County borders Oklahoma and Broken Bow is a town in McCurtain County, Oklahoma about 20 minutes away. You can't buy alcohol in Sevier County, so most people from Sevier County drive across the state line (which is about 5 minutes from where I grew up) to buy alcohol. There's a few bars right on the state line where it was easy for minors to buy alcohol. I would guess that Lorrie met the narrator while out having a good time in Oklahoma. Also, the general perception of Oklahoma from an Arkansan's point of view is that they are very rough and rowdy, which explains why Lorrie's parents would be skeptical of her being with a kid from Oklahoma, which is where Evan is from. Hope this helped with your interpretation and keep the Turnpike reactions coming!

Great reaction! The Bird Hunters is another part of the story and a great song. If you want to see what loving Lorrie is like listen to The Mercury.
Another band that you would enjoy is Flatland Cavalry.

If I can remember correctly, lorrie was his ex wife. And the guy at the end said that because this was one of his first times singing since being getting out of rehab and getting clean and healthy. I saw them the other night for the first time in about 7 years. They haven't skipped a beat. Really happy Evan is sober now.

The beauty of TT songs is they’re amazing story telling, often about heartbreak or struggle but are in very fast paced songs by skilled musicians. Evan Felker (TT singer seen solo here) said in an interview a few years back that they had to write upbeat songs that dudes who worked their ass off all week could dance to in honky tonk bars, but they wanted to write songs that would be slow and meaningful. So they did both. As their catalog expanded, you can see the transition to slower more meaningful music where the first two albums blew your hair back and were unable to not move to them. Please make them a weekly video my friend, they’re well worth the time slot. Cheers 94 club homies 🍻

The best part of reaction videos is people love sharing their favorite music and when they see someone approach it with an open mind it is a wonderful experience.
This is a band people LOVE and seeing you do their songs is a treat while Evan is getting better.
That being said, If you did 'Sunday Morning Paper' when you get a chance I would be very appreciative. Not sure how other fans feel about it but I think it needs more exposure because how great it is in my opinion.

I always kind of heard this as a song of self fulfilling prophecy. That being, he felt he was not good enough for her because everyone kept telling him that. In the end one night she's playing Domino's with a friend he gets drunk an makes a scene (maybe accusations about her relationship with her friend it's not in the lyrics but it is not the worst reach) from there she gets upset about this chip on his shoulder and breaks and he says well I always knew you would leave me. The chorus "never laid a hand on" I don't think is him saying I never beat her but in his mind she was never his yet he's been learning to lose her the whole time. He could never get past his own feeling of inferiority and it poisons the relationship.

Hey, great commentary as always! Loving the Turnpike Troubadours content. Their song "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" is another great listen!
I know I'm a bit late in putting in suggestions for the ladies of country, but "It Ain't Right" by Shannon Jae Ridout is a great song about supporting a loved one through their struggles. Her songwriting is very much influenced by Benjamin Tod, who's a friend of hers. (In fact, I believe the "Nicholas" mentioned by Ben in the GemsOnVHS version of "Sorry for the Things" was her late husband.)
Also, Jaida Dreyer is a great, semi-new country singer. She released a few songs, including a great track that celebrates Loretta Lynn and other ladies of classic country (as well as poking a little fun at their voluminous 80s hairdos,) called "Jack It To Jesus (Spray It To Hell)," a few years ago and seems to have taken a few years off. However, she also recently did a fun, witty duet with Corb Lund called "I Think You Oughta Try Whiskey."
An older but wonderful country-bluegrass singer is Patty Loveless, who did a wonderful, heartfelt cover of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive." I think I've seen a few calls for a reaction to Rhiannon Giddens as well, which I can heartily support, especially her cover of "Poor Wayfaring Stranger."
And to round things out with a more mainstream singer, Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" is a pseudo -murder ballad (doesn't exactly fit the criteria, but the inspiration is there) that surprisingly made it very mainstream for a short time a few years ago.
Looking forward to seeing what you chose for next week!

      @TxWhisk021 4 роки тому

Felkner by Zach is amazing although not a polished version which seems fitting. Excited to see Zach going places as his new song ‘Headed South’ is 👍🏻
Online summary: “Zach Bryan released this song on UA-cam after the Turnpike Troubadours' May 24th, 2019 Instagram announcement cancelling their tour and announced they were going on an indefinite hiatus. It is believed that Even Felker, the lead singer of the Turnpike Troubadours, may be taking time off to deal with substance abuse issues. There have been a number of live performances where he has been visibly intoxicated, hindering his ability to perform. This song is Bryan’s call to Mr. Felker on behalf of the band’s entire fan base, reminding him of the impact he’s had on other’s and encouraging him to persevere through tough times.”

Love Turnpike!! Keep up the great reactions. As for women of Red Dirt, here’s you a list.
Jamie Lin Wilson - Queen of Red Dirt. Sings with everybody.
Courtney Patton - BFF of Jamie and wife of Jason Eady
Kaitlin Butts - new and burning hot right now. White River is a must
Kelsey Waldron - signed with John Prine and blowing up. From Kentucky like Tyler. Her version of Paradise is spectacular.
Morgan Wade is young, and less known gem making a name for herself. I’d compare her story to Benjamin Tod. Hard life, sobered up and writing great tunes. Check out OurVinyl Sessions. Through Your Eyes she wrote about her kid. Powerful song.
Sarah Shook is little more power chords than others but she’s awesome.
Sunny Sweeney runs with Cody Jinks and Whitey Morgan so you know she’s a badass.
Lori McKenna is the best songwriter out there. Period. Not quite as country sounding but she just nails songs about life and writes a ton of country songs for others. When You’re My Age just recently came out and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Her version of Humble and Kind (covered by Tim McGraw) is a must listen.
That would be where I’d point you towards if you want get started diving into the females
    Happy listening

Turnpike was a slow burn for me. But man, there is so much in the song writing, the way felker can turn a phrase is rare and special! Lori comes up over and over throughout different songs, his grandpa's auto 5 (shotgun) comes up multiple times as well. Not a bad Turnpike song out there. Keep them coming!
You are on a great music journey, you're on the right path.
I wish I could hear all this agian for the first time! So special!
Cody Jinks, song "David" is probably the best song of the last decade. You must review it! You will not regret it.

I love Cody Jinks. I have been holding back on David because I don't want to hear all the best in one go, but it's very close to the top of the list. I'm going to listen to it and upload it for next week!

From what I understand, most of the story lines he writes aren't personal experiences. There is a connection between a lot of his songs but I believe its for the most part fictional. But that does not take away from the greatness because he is fantastic at coming up with and writing narratives. He and RC (the bassist) do the bulk of the writing and they mostly stick to writing about life in Eastern and Southern Oklahoma. Like you eluded to, hes not the fanciest with words, but he has a way of illustrating a view point that we don't see a lot in songwriting. Hope to see The Bird Hunters from ACL soon! That one is about (surprise) going on a hunt, and not being able to get a woman off his mind. Love everything about TT.

This song is a great one, I'm not a fan of this version. I prefer album versions or at least full band, that way you get everything, every instrument adds to the whole product. In this version his vocals are less than perfect because he has to blow on the hermonica, and the low notes on the guitar are over powering his voice. I feel that on an album everybody is putting out the best version they can produce and you get the A plus version of the song. But on the bright side, a good song with good lyrics telling a good story always comes through, and that's what Musicians like Turnpike do. I love how this songs lyrics seem simple but are truly complex, it feels like your just listing to a buddy tell a story.
