As much as she deserved recognition, she was a strange choice for SNL. They usually don’t feature slow singers until they’re already reasonably famous. It was a risky move asking her to do an understated show when she did.

I absolutely adore Lana and you're most likely right that she was nervous. But I've seen her live twice and she was amazing, so comparing the two shows I've seen to the SNL one, it was admittedly pretty bad. I'll definitely cut her some slack though, this was so early in her career and her first live televised performance and let's just be real: her musical style isn't for everyone even when she's at her best. That's one of the reasons I love her so much though and I'm glad to see this many years after her SNL hiccup that she's still slaying

I agree, I think that was the biggest issue. Although she could've added something in her performance to get people more invested in her song. She just stood there while singing some very slow and quiet songs, and a performance like that won't get an audience excited at all, especially if she's not well known. She has talent and a great aesthetic, but I guess her kind of performance and SNL fandom clearly don't mix well, it's just not for everyone I guess.

She could have canceled, it was in the end her choice to go on that stage and perform. They practice a few days before the big day so if she wasn't feeling it she should have just not done it. She takes ownership for that decision as well. She's a grown ass woman, she wasn't a teen by this time.

I remember when I heard about everyone hating her performance and accusing her of being a fake, I was ready to go defend her because I really loved Video Games. But when I started watching her sing Blue Jeans, I was like oof that's bad.

I actually liked the Katy Perry performance and it has stuck with me over the years for some reason lol. I liked the loose choreography of the catwalk setup with each drag Queen getting a moment in the spotlight. Her outfit is beetle juice inspired( I think) which is random to me but also hilarious. And the inclusion of backpack kid is just *chefs kiss*

For the record, I think it was awesome that Katy Perry invited the backpack kid to SNL. She preformed great and then brought her performance to new heights by bringing a surprise nobody expected (I watched that episode live). It shows not just she is a talented artist, but she's a creative producer and an innovative cultural sage in her industry. It was a great show that got people talking. She's no longer the "I kissed a girl" girl but an adult woman and she can put on shows and find talent. She proved her abilities in about 30 seconds to the world.
