Ewan McGregor blew me away in Moulin Rouge, the tone of his voice is so crisp and clear. I became a bit obsessed with his cover of My Song after seeing the film cause I love the way his voice sounds in it. I was 11 when the movie came out but didn’t see it until I was 13 and I didn’t know it was a cover of Elton John’s song at the time 🫣 only found out cause my dad heard me listening to it and he started singing along to it too and I was like, “how do you know this??” and he told me it was originally by Elton John 😅
I adored that movie! I think I was 23 or 24 when it came out and I was obsessed with it and would watch it over and over. I think come what May was my favourite song.
Not to be rude but… the name of the song is “Your Song” 😉 I agree Ewan did a great job. His vocals feel very untrained but his pitch is very good and his inflection is great
Most definitely! I too was completely obsessed with the movie and watched it on repeat. I used to be able to recite every single song haha I used to walk to work which was a couple of miles away, so I'd pass the time by singing them. And my best friend and I would sing the elephant medley to each other on drives in the car lol Then when I introduced Moulin Rouge to my daughters, they fell in love with Ewan and the movie too. Watching this makes me want to rewatch it for the many hundred and umpteenth time. It'll always be a favorite of mine ❤
Val Kilmer in his portrayal of Jim Morrison!! He practically channeled Morrison. Not only in his vocals but his mannerisms were spot on! It was almost spooky. In fact the actual members of the Doors said that they couldn't tell if it was Val or Jim singing on certain songs. Pretty high praise. Also I would mention Gwyneth Paltrow and Zooey Deschanel. 😊
So happy for someone to say positive words of Val Kilmer's performance..after all the hateful comments....Val Kilmer FAN: WEIRD science; Willow..so many more..The Saint plus the Ghost and The Darkness......
I truly fell in love with him after seeing that performance. And a fan of the song, too. Surprisingly, the same song cemented my appreciation for Taron Egerton.
Reese…..well that gal just takes the cake….who knew that she was hiding a phenomenal voice?! I loved the fact that Reece and Joaquin decided to take on Johnny and June’s duet and make it real with their own voices! ❤
and she worked on the movie script. Her uncredited punch-up work as a script doctor is largely unknown, but she was responsible for making movies funny in the 80s-00s.
To go with number 1, I was surprised at John C. Reilly when he sang Mr. Cellophane in Chicago. Yes, I know he sang in Walk Hard, but Chicago came out 5 years before that. Just surprised he didn't make the list, even at the low end.
And he allegedly gave the Chicago directors several equally riveting versions of Mr Cellophane in completely different, fully fleshed-out tones. He was a bane of their existence for the best reason ever: "How... how do we CHOOSE?! He gave EIGHT. DIFFERENT. PERFECT. TAKES!"
Bingo. He absolutely killed that song. Leaving Chicago out completely-especially considering it won Best Picture-is beyond strange. See my comment above.
He was one of the reasons the film version was so memorable. It’s often a throwaway role - but holy sh*t did he make everyone stop and really listen to that song and be haunted by it
Ryan Gosling - the live Oscars performance was WOW Zendaya - I did not know she could sing until TGS because I never watched her on Disney. The Cast of Buffy Jensen Ackles Nicole Kidman Chris Hemsworth
@@vickiwhite7748 Same, basically came here with the express purpose to see if he'd be mentioned Jensen's singing was totally a revelation (especially considering his purposefully bad vocals on Supernatural lol) But they seemed to be weird about tv-shows in this one. Why does singing at an obscure opening ceremony for something which most people haven't seen land higher in priority than singing on tv? I don't get it
I wonder why Nicole Kidman was left off, since her Moulin Rouge co-star was on this list. She was at least as good as most of the women on this list; better than some of them.
yes, several I can name. First of all, Johnny Depp in ''Sweeney Todd,'' ringing in his fantastic singing talent and of course guitar skills, still active today in his band Hollywood Vampires and of course with the wonderful late Jeff Beck on their joint 2022 tour across Europe and US. Then Jensen Ackles, having released to this day 2 albums together with Steve Carlson under the band name Radio Company. During conventions he regularly delights audiences with his cover songs, delicious! Furthermore Robert Downey jr, who also released a delightful album ''The Futurist,'' and also sang in other movies. Not to forget Kevin Costner, and Bruce Willis, both touring extendedly with their bands respectively. Those 5 with a tremendous singing talent, paired with musical instrumental skills are my personal Top 5. Excellent!
when you grow up on Devil Loves Prada so you're already impressed and then someone puts on Into the Woods and you're like, "HOLY SHIT SHE'S LITERALLY FLAWLESS"
My favorite/ most heartbreaking scene in Ironwood is when she, the drunk, sings in a bar and she is great! But before the scene is over we realize it was all in her mind. The only voice that remains in her is that of a drunk.
Oh yes, he really did! I couldn't believe my ears the first time I heard his beautiful singing voice. It was a huge contrast to his Gomer Pyle voice. It was a deep bass and of operatic quality. Just amazing.
I hope that Emma Stone gets cast in another musical soon. She really impressed me with her musical chops in "Easy A", in her big elaborate musical number, for no particular reason.
I could see her as Geri Halliwell in a Spice Girls biopic because Emma has been on record for how much of a big fan she is of the Spice Girls, hence why she changed her name from Emily to Emma after Emma Bunton. They're kind of similar: Both are badasses and ambitious with insecurities with Emma battling anxiety since she was a kid and Geri battling bulimia and cancer.
Glenn Close is a lyrical soprano. You can see it in Meeting Venus (1991). David Carradine was a songwriter, recorded albums, and played his own versions of Woody Guthrie's songs in the biopic Bound For Glory (1976).

Austin Butler had already showed he can sing in the Disney show Austin and Allie(sp?). So, him even getting the role of Elvis didn't surprise me at all.

I agree! I was totally amazed and surprised by Gerard Butler in Phantom. Who knew he was not only good but good enough to sing in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical!!! I kept thinking he would be on this list.
I've got a few more names to add.......... Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Mark Strong, Tom Hiddleston, Renee Zellweger, Nicole Kidman, Kevin Kline and Kenneth Brannagh.
Timothee Chalamet in Wonka. He has such an amazing vocal ability and range. Someone those songs couldn't have been easy to sing. "A world of your own" comes to mind.
Ewan McGregor will always be one of my all-time favorite! Those beginning notes are just heart piercing. Moulin Rouge is in my top 3 favorite movies because of him.
Totally was blown away when I watched Sweeney Todd, with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, both were wonderful and I was completely taken by surprise that they were such talented singers.
Thank you for the update, MsMojo..!! Also, Matthew Broderick sings "Till There Was You" well in a movie called "The Music Man (2003)" with Kristin Chenoweth.
The headline of this video mystifies me. Most movie actors have stage experience, voice classes, as well as acting classes. There are some actors who can't carry a tune in a bucket, but most have the training. I know that I've had plenty of classes, and kind of had to relearn after my voice changed in puberty to a baritone. Dwayne Johnson took months of voice classes to learn to sing before recording his part in Moana, and yes, he did great work there. That's impressive. Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix both went through a lot of vocal training in preparation for Walk the Line, and they were fantastic. Also, James Cagney and Christopher Walken, both known as movie tough guys, started out as song-n-dance men on stage. Cagney puts on full display in the movie Yankee Doodle Dandy, the film adaptation of George M, a stage musical that I have worked on.
Emmy Rossum was fantastic in 2004 Phantom of the Opera, but where's the love for Gerard Butler? I was floored by his singing voice. He was mesmerizing. He deserves some recognition as well. He was sensational.
A lot of people didn't like his "rough/rock-type" vocals for Phantom because they were used to the cleaner vocals of the Broadway version. Personally, since I live outside of America, the movie was the first time hearing the Phantom soundtrack and I instantly fell in love with both Emmy and Gerard's vocals and was (and still am) obsessed. I love the rough/rocky take that Gerard brought to Phantom's vocals. I actually really don't like the cleaner, broadway versions - just a personal preference, but that was an instant turn-off for me as a singer/musician 😂😂
Neil Patrick Harris! Who knew Doogie Houser could sing, Gorgeously? At least that is how I felt when I heard him sing the Beautiful tenor notes in "No one's gonna harm you" from the revival of Sweeny Todd. And, later, some people were shocked to see Barney KILL IT in an early battle on Glee singing "Dream On".
Taron Egerton I thought that would’ve been Sing not Rocketman. That movie came out in 2016. RDJ sounds sooo different from singing vs talking I didn’t know his voice could get that high. With him being so deep. Maybe I’m just used to the Iron Man movies. I don’t know. I don’t hear him sing that much.
RDJ actually sang "Smile" for the Chaplin movie he was in back in 1992. He has his own jazz type of album. I bought it when it came out (which was probably pre-Iron Man days or around the same time the first film came out).
This doesn't truly count because I'm guessing everybody else already knew that she was a singer... but when nerdy, mousy, MANDY MOORE came out in that dress on stage in A WALK TO REMEMBER and started to SING.......! What a voice! Like her co-star in the story, I did not expect it, and I would easily have fallen in love if I was sitting in his spot in that school play, as well!
Jake Gyllenhaal hosting the 1/13/2007 episode of SNL when he sang a song from Dreamgirls in the opening monologue. It came out of nowhere and he hit all the high notes. He’s gone on to star in a Sondheim musical revival on Broadway so he’s definitely got the vocal chops but that SNL opening was a shock and an eye opener.
I know everyone knows that Meryl Streep can sing, repeatedly. For me, it was Amazing Grace from Silkwood. It still makes me cry every time. Also, It's Me from Death Becomes Her could work too.
Riley Keough…her mama and grandad should be proud even though they are both gone beyond this world! Riley has an absolutely awesome voice and no matter her origins, she should be a star…both in acting and vocal ability! Daisy Jones & The Six was phenomenal.
Jack Black in High Fidelity! It was the MOST amazing reveal, especially since Jack Black was mostly being introduced to us as an actor in that movie. The reveal of his musical performing talents was earth-shaking.
Viggo Mortensen did a spectacular solo at the end of LOTR- Rerurn of the King. Crystal Bernard played on Wings but later had a solo career and did popular duets with Peter Cetera.
Can't believe no one has mentioned Clint Eastwood!! I watched him in many westerns and Dirty Harry movies, but I didn't have a crush until I saw and heard him sing in a much earlier film/musical "Paint Your Wagon"😍‼️
Yes! Wonderful diversity! I would have thought Raul Esparza would have been on the list. Sure you might know him as the prosecutor on SVU,but his Broadway musical theater work is breathtaking.😊
Most have no idea Raúl Esparza is originally from the theater (4 time Tony nominee). ADA Barba sings his heart out! Check out his version of "Hallelujah" on YT and be seriously blown away. He's amazing.
Can we please put Darren Chris from Glee as Blaine Anderson in here? Songs like Teenage Dream, the acoustic version of Teenage Dream, Baby It’s cold outside, Somewhere we only know, Tonight, Beauty School Dropout, All of Me, Cough Syrup, Hey Soul Sister, and Last Friday Night, with Wanna be startin something. Are must see
Dan also just won a Tony Award for his role in the Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along. He should have been nominated when he was in How To Succeed.
My surprise was probably just my ignorance, But I loved Hugh Laurie as Dr. House. He played the role as a man needing a cane and with a true pure American accent. Then I saw him on a talk show in Europe with his real British accent and began to sing and dance. Then I find out he's a very accomplished touring song and dance pro.
My biggest surprie was A Chorus Line when Audrey Landers started to sing. I've only known Ms. Landers from Dallas and other 1980s TV-shows and never knew that she could sing. To this day, A Chorus Line is still firmly in my top 10 favourite musicals (and yes, Chicago with Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones is in it as well).
Taron is an amazing vocalist and actor…his love of Elton’s music and his acting and musical ability blew everyone away…but Elton’s support of Taron is the feather in the hat!!! The Rocketman movie would never have gone ahead if Elton hadn’t have given his support to Taron portraying him and Taron did an absolutely phenomenal job!
I LOVE Robert Downey Jr. He’s so talented. So I’m not surprised that he’s a good singer. There’s nothing he can’t do 😊 I wouldn’t have been surprised that the actor playing Elton John was a good singer because I’ve never heard of him.
Back that up a bit! In 1993 a little known movie called Heart and Souls which did star Robert Downey Jr which was a sleeper btw Also had his singing talents!
Great video I’m gonna say Nicole Kidman and Moulin Rouge and then also she had like a little part in the movie nine and then Marion Cotillard in the vie en rose because she could actually sing and she was also a nine
Gwyneth Paltrow, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester all from Country Strong ❤❤❤ One of my favorite movies ❤ It's got 3 actors who can sing and 1 singer who can act 😊😊

Yep was gonna say that too.
Me too! I also think the order was totally wrong
I know, they sang very pretty and danced and acted wonderfully and not even mentioned????
Completely agree
I was definitely going to mention Renee. She wasn’t quite as good as Catherine, but she was good.
Why has no-one mentioned Alan Rickman? He did a masterful job in _Sweeney Todd_ And let's not forget Val Kilmer in _The Doors_

Kilmer is underrated. So sad that he can’t even speak anymore bless him. The Doors was great, lovely performance from Kilmer

I'd include Neil Patrick Harris, too. :)
Especially after highlighting Hugh Jackman as host of the Tonys. Hugh is great, but NPH is the best host. Plus Dr. Horrible!!
@@mamajinx oh, if we're going Dr. Horrible, add Nathan Fillion to the list, who knew Mal Reynolds could sing?
@Persewna4 good catch!!
Yes! Both Fillion AND NPH are amazing singers!
Thank you for the update, MsMojo..!! Also, Matthew Broderick sings "Till There Was You" well in a movie called "The Music Man (2003)" with Kristin Chenoweth.
Matthew also sang a bit in Godzilla, before landing a role in the musical The Producers.
How can you skip over Kristin Chenoweth? Her voice is transcendent!
@@laurab5750 I think she was skipped here because she's primarily always been a Broadway phenom, not a movie star. And yes, she's incredible !
Rick Moranis in Little Shop of Horrors
He was the perfect Seymour, and he performed it as well as any stage actor could have. One of my favorite performances.
JENSEN ACKLES, DAMNIT.
Now I am going to have to watch Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis again!
Ann Hathaway in Les Mis… she belts it out with I Dreamed A Dream…. Amazing.
Chris Pine in Into The Woods and Disney’s Wish
I think “old movie” knowledge is lost on Ms Mojo. I love Yankee Doodle Dandy. The Rock sand in the Game Plan too.
I agree and Patrick Wilson
Neil Patrick Harris! Who knew Doogie Houser could sing, Gorgeously? At least that is how I felt when I heard him sing the Beautiful tenor notes in "No one's gonna harm you" from the revival of Sweeny Todd. And, later, some people were shocked to see Barney KILL IT in an early battle on Glee singing "Dream On".
And he won a Tony Award for his lead role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Him and Hugh Jackman singing together.
I came here to say this! His character even sang an Elton John song in that movie which is why they wanted him for the Elton John Movie!
RDJ actually sang "Smile" for the Chaplin movie he was in back in 1992. He has his own jazz type of album. I bought it when it came out (which was probably pre-Iron Man days or around the same time the first film came out).
Grease 2 is my favorite guilty pleasure film
I actually like it better than the 1st one ❤
"Who's that Guy?" scene is my all-time favorite.
@@pattischult9401 I like the Reproduction number
Mine too!
Sissy Spacek did her own vocals in “Coal Miner’s Daughter”
Yes, and I often preferred her covers of Loretta Lynn’s songs.
Robert Downey Jr sang earlier in the 1993 movie Heart and Souls. When I hear the Star Spangled Banner in my head, it's his version from that film.
Excellent list. I would’ve also put Catherine Zeta-Jones at number one. Nobody knew she could sing. She was a real surprise.❤
For me she was always a singer turned actress, since I first heared about her for her part in Jeff Wayne's Spartacus.
She trained as a dancer first, I think.
I loved her command of the stage when she danced. She was pregnant at the time too. Amazing performance.
Renee Zellweger was Amazing to me I didn't know she could sing she was fantastic! ❤❤❤
She sang in Empire Records in the mid 1990s, so when she did actual musicals, it didn't surprise me at all.
Tom Hiddleston is great. See him in I Saw the Light. He's a great dancer too!
Dermot Mulroney singing "The Way You Look Tonight" to Julia Roberts on a tour boat in "My Best Friend's Wedding" surprised me and touched my heart.
When I was hooked on musicals for a time, I was most surprised to see and hear Hugh Jackman do his thing in 'Oklahoma'.
Scarlett and Jeremy are both on the list; maybe they should do a Black Widow/Hawkeye album.
With a guest appearance by Iron Man? 😂
@@HeidiGraham1982 You're right--they can be a trio!
There is videos of them singing together floating about on YT, I've seen them in the past. JR is one of my guilty pleasure singers 😅
@sunshinejoclaire I'll have to look them up!
What about Matt Bomer, he sang in glee and Magic Mike xxl
Matt Bomer is great, he makes me blush with they are doing the show at the convegtion.
Doom Patrol too. He sings People Like Us (Kelly Clarkson)
It's because of Taron's performance of "I'm still Standing" from Sing that Elton John picked Taron to play him in the Biopic. o.o
Yep, I became a fan of his singing talent after Sing.
Yeah, when they said "that's ironic" I was thinking, um, it's not irony if one actually led to the other happening?
Plus Elton had a featured cameo in Taron's Kingsman sequel film in 2017. That's where they first got acquainted with each other.
John C Reiley in Chicago
And in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story
I know everyone knows that Meryl Streep can sing, repeatedly. For me, it was Amazing Grace from Silkwood. It still makes me cry every time. Also, It's Me from Death Becomes Her could work too.
I came here to mention Silkwood too. Her version of Amazing Grace was good.
You should have shown Amanda Seyfried's operatic voice from Les Mis as she has 2 very talented abilities of singing.
It was dumb they picked a later role, Mamma Mia. Les Mis was much earlier.
Dwayne Johnson sang some Elvis in the movie The Game Plan back in 2007. Seems like everyone always forgets that.
Exactly 👍 I didn’t realise The Game plan is such underrated movie.
@@sockygaldamez9492 It really is!
You should see Dwayne Johnson sing Margaritaville with Stone Cold Steve Austin
and in journey 2 the mysterious island in 2012
Great list. I’m particularly thrilled when hearing Hugh Jackman perform in song and wow! Hugh Jackman can dance!
Riley Keough…her mama and grandad should be proud even though they are both gone beyond this world! Riley has an absolutely awesome voice and no matter her origins, she should be a star…both in acting and vocal ability! Daisy Jones & The Six was phenomenal.
I ABSOLUTELY fell in love with Ewan singing in Moulin Rouge. No one can sing-smile like him. What a dream ❤❤❤
My all time favorite singer in a musical movie❤
I didn’t know Hugh Jackman could sing before I watched The Greatest Show Man in 2018
He started his career acting in a musical 😅
@@kishannaconandoyle1907 ya but I was just being born the year he was in Oklahoma
Yeah, we only have to wait 894 years to hear that.😁
Same
Jack Black in High Fidelity!
Are must see
Well, I think Darren is a fabulous singer, I believe the category was actors that were not initially known for their singing ability.
I knew he could sing from supergirl.
You missed Daniel Radcliffe on David Letterman when he was in How to Succeed in Business Without Even Trying
Dan also just won a Tony Award for his role in the Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along. He should have been nominated when he was in How To Succeed.
John C Reilly blew me away w Cellophane. I never saw that coming.
What about Emily Hampshire, in Schitt's Creek, when she sang "Maybe This Time" from Caberet?
She was so great!!! Total surprise
All of these are great picks. Renee Zellweger was a surprise also in Chicago. Worth a mention for sure.
Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gerald Butler and Patrick Wilson.
As a Mousekateer, Drew Barrymore was never a surprise singer.
Hugh Grant in Music and Lyrics ❤
My surprise was probably just my ignorance, But I loved Hugh Laurie as Dr. House. He played the role as a man needing a cane and with a true pure American accent. Then I saw him on a talk show in Europe with his real British accent and began to sing and dance. Then I find out he's a very accomplished touring song and dance pro.
How about kevin spacey in beyond the sea where he played and sang as bobby darin
Zachary Levi! Wow! What a voice he has. I just thought he was, "Chuck."
Imma spend allllll weekend reseeing most of these movies. TYVM for the reminder MoJo. ❤️
Alternately, we discovered in Mamma Mia that Pierce Bronson should keep his microphone off! 😂
Russell Crowe in Les Mis needed that advice!
I remember hearing the duet from Moulin Rouge with Ewan and Nicole Kidman and being more surprised at HER voice than his!
I LOVE Robert Downey Jr. He’s so talented. So I’m not surprised that he’s a good singer. There’s nothing he can’t do 😊
I wouldn’t have been surprised that the actor playing Elton John was a good singer because I’ve never heard of him.
Ewan is the No. 1! Many in the list do not qualify in this category.
Back that up a bit! In 1993 a little known movie called Heart and Souls which did star Robert Downey Jr which was a sleeper btw Also had his singing talents!
Kiera Knightly in Begin Again and of course Renee Zellweger.
Great video I’m gonna say Nicole Kidman and Moulin Rouge and then also she had like a little part in the movie nine and then Marion Cotillard in the vie en rose because she could actually sing and she was also a nine
Are we seriously just not gonna talk about Stephanie Beatriz voicing Mirabelle in Encanto?
And Vaggie in Hazbin Hotel too!
Gwyneth Paltrow, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester all from Country Strong ❤❤❤ One of my favorite movies ❤ It's got 3 actors who can sing and 1 singer who can act 😊😊
Gwyneth sang in bounce long before that
@@melfarm9109 she sang in Duets with Huey Lewis before then too 💜💜 I love her voice 💜
Patrick Swayze shes like the the wind ❤❤❤❤❤
he not only sang it, he wrote it...
Seriously, listen to "Over and Over" sung by Forest Whitaker in Jingle Jangle. I never knew he could sing and he does it with such heart!
Grease 2 and Batman were the reasons I knew who Michelle Pfeiffer was as a kid lol
