One of fhe first English-speaking reviews on UA-cam of the 2022 model! The laptop sleeve is now situated toward your back (though that sleeve impinging into the compartment feels odd)--yay! But I agree -- the loss of the second zipped compartment may be a dealbreaker for me.
I love this comparison! It's so good to see the differences like this. I have the old model and I'm glad that I have the old model. I don't often use the big extra compartment for my laptop, but it's nice to have an extra pocket - even if it's just for snacks :P I also prefer the bigger top pocket. But that might also be because it's what I'm used to! But it's good that they are now working on a better fit if you're a different size. I also missed the waist band option in the old one. But it's interesting how many differences there were that we don't see as upgrades. I subscribed and look forward to seeing what you have next!
Great review and I agree the original version is great if you do not travel with a laptop. However, for anyone that travels with a laptop the new version is the only option. Relocating the laptop sleeve makes a huge difference in the size and function of the main compartment. It is impossible to comfortably close the old version with a laptop in the front pocket because it puts all the stress of closing and pressure on the laptop.
Excellent review! I bought the old version a few months ago for a Spring trip to Italy, so haven’t used it yet. Was happy until I saw the gorgeous new colors…buyer’s remorse set in until I watched your comparison. Think I prefer the one I have!
Looks like a mix between the "old" fairview and porter.. Thanks for the review ! I'm not a big fan of this change though, I like the idea of the laptop pocket closer to the back, but this looks weird... Wished they would have made a thin laptop pocket at the back but separate from the rest and keeping another thin pocket at the front withou the laptop compartment but with smaller and mash pockets to put tiny objet and keep everything organised.
Thanks for the review! I actually love the laptop panel on the back. I have recently had back pain wearing my trusty Porter and think it’s because my laptop is pushing the weight against my back. Plus, the front pocket was useless to me for the organizational features so I’d rather have a slightly bigger main compartment. Thanks for making such a detailed video!
Thank you so much for this comparison. I've the old 40lts and was thinking about changing for the new one (or even the FP55). After all that I saw, I felt like the differences aren't that many to justify a whole new backpack. But... I've bought the 15lts daypack to increase a little bit my carrying capacity. Let's see how it works with the old FP40.
Honestly, I would’ve kept the old one after travelling with the new one for a couple of years now - it’s got much more organisation for the 40 and adding that daypack will give you a lot of flexibility
My favorite is totally the old version! I've watched many reviews on youtube and found one in a shop in town but I didn't had the money. I found one today, on internet. It's black, i was searching for the grey. But it doesn't matter, I had to buy it before it was too late. It was the last one they had, and it was on sale. I don't like the new version of the bag bc of the shiny fabric. I also don't like that they removed the large front pocket which is very useful for easy access of small things, notebooks etc. The front pocket on the new bag seems strange. The fabric looks a little bit slippery so if u lay the bag on the floor things might fall out. Thanks for the review.
*edit* I have since purchased the new style bag. I still approve of the design change, however you have next to zero organization in this bag.* Interesting; I think removing the front compartment is genius. I always thought it took up way too much room. Packing clothes in the main compartment and then sticking in your laptop always added more pressure. So I always had my laptop in the main compartment anyway. This is a good design change to me.
The omitting of the extra compartment that was meant for the laptop/tablet in the previous version is a bad move. I used that space for quick access to masks, documents and other loose stuff I wanted to get quick access to without having open the main compartment. Thanks for pointing this out.
I needed a carry on big enough for my laptop, cameras, Nintendo switch, etc. that I can carry on my front while I have my 70L on my back (going away permanently and don’t wanna take suitcases). And the only thing was spitting me off the old one was the laptop was on the front. And I could use it as a day/week trips once I’m away, so I don’t have to take my 70L. But if you were me would you get this one, the Porter 30 or Tropic Shell for what I said? I’m literally about to bout this one now but I’d like opinions! Thanks ❤
Great comparison, answered so much of my questions! There is only 1 left that might be a dealbreaker for me: how much carabiner hooks does the old model have? It is the one thing I am still trying to figure out as I use these a lot when I am too lazy to pack properly in between locations 😅
I would say the new version is perfect if you have a good daypack with some organizational pockets. It annoys me that there is no good secondary compartment for all the small stuff you want easily accessible, like chargers, snacks, passport etc.
Completely agree! I had to upgrade my daypack from the Osprey packable daylite to a decent one with pockets purely to keep organised on travel days. It’s been a lifesaver!
Can the new 40 (and new main carrier of the 55) contain all the stuff of the main carrier of the old 55? The new 55 main carrier seems to be much smaller than the old one. Thank you :)
We’re glad you found it useful! No rain cover, unfortunately - Em bought one from Osprey separately, which is easy to fit, and Phe bought a cheaper one from Trespass, which is slightly harder to fit but does the job!
I wouldn’t say so, I doubt they’d be strong enough as they are all mostly elasticated cord - it could! But I wouldn’t chance it unless there were no other options
It sounds like the new one would be pretty perfect if the laptop padding was totally removable, rather than just on one side. Having it at the back seems more sensible for carrying a laptop, bug if you don't always have one with you, the extra packing space removing the laptop sleeve would give a bit of extra space for other things.
Thank you for the reply! I believe it’s only the front, however we are waiting for the 55 to arrive in a couple of days (and the daypack) so once I receive it I’ll have a look and let you know :)
i personally wouldn't be happy with the weight pressing down on my laptop.. they should have kept the front pocket just for putting stuff in even if it wasn't for the laptop
Glad you liked the vid! As for the hip belt - Unfortunately not, there’s no way to detach the straps and the backpack cover at the back only allows for all of the straps to be tucked in at once - hope that helped!
Hello! So it is these ones amzn.to/3FCObvg - if you buy the 55 it comes with a daypack and you can also find them on the Osprey store! Hope this helped! *affiliate link
Hey! It’s very sturdy, you won’t be able to push it down length ways as the frame is too strong. As for tucking straps away, yes! There is a back panel to be rolled and hidden (tucked into the base of the bag) when you’re using it, and then zipped to hide away shoulder straps and the hipbelt :)
is the old version slightly shorter in the height dimension? the low budget airline I am travelling with is strict so I would like it to be on the smaller size if possible
Interesting review, when I just started to regret that I bought the old version just before the new verion is launched. I would like to know if the new version is lighter than the old one ?
Thank you for the video. I still don't get the hype of osprey bags. Most reviews are written by men saying how great the bag is but I dislike the bag for two main reasons: 1) no small compartments. As a female, I have a lot of small items -- how do you deal with no compartments. 2) look like a ninja turtle bag.
Hey! After travelling with this bag for 2 years now i can say its definitely NOT perfect and misses a lot of things like compartments that would be useful. At the time of this bag coming out i believe it was best on the market for price and is still up there as a solid travel bag in that price range. Both the daypack and main look and work like brand new after heavy use 2 years later! But yep, little compartment space is a struggle - i rely on my daypack and pockets a lot. The look doesn't bother me as its not too disimilar to most travel backpacks you see :) If i was to buy again i'd maybe look at a bag with more compartments but i wouldn't forego the quality of material and bag which would mean looking for something in a higher price bracket. Overall, it's still a solid choice in 2024 in it's price bracket :)
This is a great video! I'm in the US so it hasn't come out yet. I don't have a tablet and don't plan on getting one so I think I'd use the compartment to hold meds and basic toiletries (hair brush, toothbrush/toothpaste).
That’s correct! The 55 still comes with a daypack. In the previous model, you could zip the daypack to the main bag, but in the new 55L, you use the compression straps to hold it down and you could do this to the 40L as well. And yep, carry-on compatible - we’ll be doing a video soon about the 55L!
the additional 15 l on the 55 ARE the added 15 l daypack so the 55 is on itself basically as big as the 40 but without the front compartment the 40 has.
Unfortunately not! The laptop sleeve is sown in on one side, but can be lifted on the other - we are really sure why you are able to lift it on one side though Hope this helped and thanks for watching!
I’ve traveled on dozens of international flights with my Porter 46, which I believe is 25 inches height and I’ve never been asked to measure it so I wouldn’t worry too much. Given that this is 22 inches and soft fabric, it will undoubtedly fit in the horizontally aligned bag measures.
i have the old version in same color and the only thing i like at the new version is the color😅 green/gray not my favorite but the dark red/dark blue is perfect😢 still I love my bag!
does the new 40L still have the "loops" to attach a shoulder strap? If so, does it still come with an included shoulder strap? Nice review btw... thanks in advance!
16 cm laptop would not be very useful 😂 just jk... nice review!! considering the male version of this (Farpoint) or the new Porter 46, I have a 2015 Porter which I absolutely love but the Farpoint looks good too!!
Unfortunately at the time this was filmed with our old camera as that’s what we were working with, however we’ve now greatly improved our camera and audio set up with a proper microphone! We will be making a 55l review with this new set up soon and hopefully you’ll be able to hear a difference!

Great review! Thanks for sharing 😁
Thanks - I have the old 40 and hoping if I get the new 55/70 that I can utilise the daypack with the 40 too. But you confirmed NO 😭haha
oouuu I just got the old Fairview and now I am torn... great comparison, v detailed, thanks for the video.
*edit* I have since purchased the new style bag.

Are you going to be doing a packing video! I’d love to see what you’ve packed and liked/didn’t like!

Thanks, awesome comparison video. Do you know the name of the color of the new red one? I can't find any info on Osprey's website...
It’s called Zircon Red! It’s more metallic looking than the old red, we think, but it’s a great colour!
Can the new 40 (and new main carrier of the 55) contain all the stuff of the main carrier of the old 55? The new 55 main carrier seems to be much smaller than the old one. Thank you :)
Great review, thank you so much! :) Does the new version include a rain cover?

I wouldn’t say so, I doubt they’d be strong enough as they are all mostly elasticated cord - it could! But I wouldn’t chance it unless there were no other options

Agreed, they definitely should have kept that front pocket as it makes organising so much easier!
Thanks for the review! Do you know if it possible to tack away hip belt so that you can wear backpack without it if you don't need it right now?
Glad you liked the vid! As for the hip belt - Unfortunately not, there’s no way to detach the straps and the backpack cover at the back only allows for all of the straps to be tucked in at once - hope that helped!
Which daypack attaches to the front of this new Farpoint 40? 😊
Hello! So it is these ones amzn.to/3FCObvg - if you buy the 55 it comes with a daypack and you can also find them on the Osprey store!
Hope this helped!

It is - but only by 1cm! The width and depth is the same but it is slightly heavier by 60g
could you make a comparison between the old and new 70L (with detachable daypack) please:)
Where did you purchase the new version?
We bought ours directly from the Osprey website or you can buy it on Amazon amzn.to/3BwDfeK :)
Interesting review, when I just started to regret that I bought the old version just before the new verion is launched. I would like to know if the new version is lighter than the old one ?
Slightly heavier actually! We compared both bags to quite fine detail in our blog post here: sapphicsabroad.com/osprey-2022-redesign/
Nice overview of the bag, thanks!
