Lou Reed called this band’s original cover of this song “the definitive version”. Couldn’t get a better accolade than that one.
Nice ! Where can I read more about it ? I'm fan of Velvet Underground & Lou Reed .
Cowboy Junkies is pretty "new" Acquaintance for me. So I would like to read what Reed said and when&where ? So any "pointers" ?
Really beautiful cover
He was referring to the 1988 "Trinity Sessions" version. Not this somewhat irritating rock attempt.
@@UnknownHumanOnlinethis album came out in 1988, I'd guess he said it sometime in the 1990s? Certainly I've heard that a long time ago.
@@joeltunnahI don't find it irritating at all. A little more raucous than the studio version, sure, but the accordion alone makes it one of the coolest CJ Sweet Janes I've heard. Thanks for posting Blythe.
That doesn't sound like Lou Reed. Sarcasm maybe? Not like Trent Reznor saying that about Cash's cover of Hurt, which was clearly heartfelt.
Cowboy Junkies are such an under-rated and/or overlooked band. They've been doing great stuff for a long while now.
Love by all of Canada.
@MizMite2002 I honestly don't think they're under rated. Bands like them never have a reputation like say Gordon Lightfoot, but they have intensely loyal fans.
Saw them live in Munich. Margo said "Give me some time and I'm happy to chat with you". She chatted with the audiance after the show, took a picture with her, lost that picture😰
Okay, so, after listening to this a couple of times using a good set of headphones, I discovered "flavors," if you will, from each of them. Little things that one might not notice right off the bat but nevertheless are there. Subtle taps by the drummer. Equally subtle enhancements by the guitar; the kinds of little things that really add to the song. Kind of like putting just enough spice in a dish to make it pop without being overwhelming and distracting. Great track by a great band. I really enjoyed this. Thank you.
@American Warhorse - Thank you so much for taking the time to listen thoroughly, and sharing your wonderful feedback!💕
@@blythespirit4077 It was my pleasure, believe me.
Same could be said for the camera work.
@@madpogue Yes indeed.
So I read your comment and got curious. I've loved this cover forever but never noticed your "flavors". It didn't take me long and faith and begorrah you're right. Cool observation and thanks. Of course I've got a grand gummy buzz going down and even my dog is fascinating. Seriously I do respect this one a whole lot more.
My wife and i used to listen to this over and over and over and..........well, you get it. Wonderful memories. We're in our 60s now and it still feels the same.
Ya, me and my wife too, on all counts. Still as good as the day it came out.
considering she didn't want to sing lead...if I remember, they needed a singer and she was reluctant to sing....
Mee too . same feelling . essential .
Here's to you! Well done.
I think this is the fastest 6 minutes in music. I always have to loop this song.
Anyone who knows anything about music will appreciate this song for what it is, one of the greatest rock tunes of all time. This cover is absolutely incredible.
NoWhere MAn, I'm so stoned I thought is was the original , beatitfil exppression, Sweet jane Now transposing,
Ok
It's always been one of my favorites
THE DRUMMERS RIM SHOTS ARE THE BEST I EVER HEARD....
This was written & recorded by Lou Reed. Lou said he liked the Cowboy Junkies versions better than his own. This, to me is the CJ’s best version!! ❤❤
This version never gets old. I read an interview in which Lou reed said that Cowboy Junkies were his favorite version.
Truth
I used to feel the same -- then I heard Miley Cyrus do it in a Backyard Session. I still love this one instrumentally, but I much prefer Miley's vocals.
After he heard the 3 Nice Girls version he said he regretted he hadn't heard that one before he said CJ's version was the bast.
The Girls mix it with "Love and Affection"...
He went further than that. He said:
"They made it their own. It's theirs now."
And their Powderfinger is better than Neil Youngs to me too.
I miss really good music like this... The things you find when your scrolling through YT...
Absolutely…I’ve just stumbled across this and I’m back to my youth…..happy days.
I hear it all with or without headphones, I single in on each sound as I listen 😊
I agree, I stopped watching TV years ago , would much rather watch real artists like this.
Who’s taking time off the rat race?? Love the good vibes I’m getting from Cowboy Junkies…..Sweet Jane
These guys take this to a whoooooooole 'nother level. Love the interpretation of a classic, the room for so much virtuosity by each musician. I'm with you brother...as much as I hate social media, this algorithm is the exception to the rule
"Sultry" is the best adjective to the vocals and the vocalist. The musical accompaniment is tense and precise. Great job, Junkies
Wish you could give it a thumbs up everytime you watch it
You couldn’t get a more beautiful singer with a better voice to perform this number!!
Sade.
Except Lou Reed
Lizzo!
@@cgdombrowbut she doesn’t make music for white folks🥴
@@hopedees5307maybe not but you can’t deny her beauty/hotness😍
Baby got back! And then some 😮
It is rare that a cover is BETTER than the original. This is not only better, it’s definitively so.
This was my husband and I’s favorite song… ,married 35 years til he died one morning 😢unexpectedly. I loved 😂him so much .The years since 2009 have been long and lonely..God,our children(5), and good friends have helped a lot. BEST VERSION OF “ Love Minus Zero,No Limits”…I HAVE EVER HEARD…NEW FAN!!!
Dios te bendiga
God bless you,I mourn your loss. You go girl.
love you girl!. stay and hang in there. the universe will take care of you and human beings. will as well. stay close to those, and try and meet a few new friends. it helps. Adios from the great State of Texas. well, it used to be anyway.
Dio ti abbia in Gloria ,
Stay strong!
NEVER FORGET MOTT THE HOOPLE! GREAT BAND
Hahaha
I first saw Mott in the early 70’s supported by an unknown band called Queen. I wonder how they turned out 😀
Nearly forgot. Remember live in 1970 in Germany
Lou Reed would be proud. This is the definitive cover of his song.
First time in my WHOLE life, im 60, that i jammed out to an Accordion!june24
63 and ditto , pretty good ! Had a little organic help !
Pp
Some songs it just hits
Yup, it's not the instrument, it's the musician using it.
My Dad was a self taught musician and started off with a guitar and then a fellow blue grass guy said he was tossing out his accordion,of course my Dad said next festival I'll be playing this but you MUST be lead guitarist. And he did it, learned how to play hardest percussion instrument!!! God rest my Daddy's soul, boy do I miss him and his music 😓. Sorry for the rant, an accordion weighs close to 50 lbs, side bar lol!!
This song is a salve to my broken soul. LOVE LOVE LOVE ❤
@@lucywatts6319 Sending healing thoughts your way 💕.
For anyone who's ever had a heart . . . every single moment in this is perfect.
@allanfifield8256 - Thank you Allan! 💕
This song is extremely simple to play. Even a 1980ties punk band would think it too simple.
I would venture that “Sweet Jane” has been covered by over a hundred bands. Lou Reed is on record saying this was his favourite. I absolutely concur with him.
I concur a little bit.
I recently heard Miley Cyrus cover Sweet Jane and I was impressed with her version. She's venturing into some great classic rock songs.
Miley cyrus. Check her version out.
❤
@@ricknowak4582 Miley’s cover is an exact copy of Margot’s version. Exact same arrangement. Exact same timing and key signatures. While the Cowboy Junkies’ version was somewhat an ‘original’ cover , Miley’s was an exact copy of the Junkies’
I love Margo and her voice! This is the song that I can happily hit repeat a couple hundred times 😊
I've hit replay twice, but must turn off computer now. I'm putting it on Desk Top.
I saw this band in May of 1989 at the Rialto Theater in Raleigh, NC. It was so laid back and awesome. We got out of our seats and moved down to the front and sat on the floor and watched them. This cover of this song is my favorite of all time.
@alvarezjen - What a wonderful experience! Thank you for sharing💕
Cool story!!
Happy Heavenly birthday Lou Reed and thank you for a splendid song. Margo steps right up and delivers.
Margo is a gem. Together with Cowboy Junkies she creates magic.❣
@@arneemilbredland2339 - You summed it up perfectly!
Thank you.💕
I couldn’t imagine a better way to say goodbye, all such amazingly incredible and influential artists that will be forever missed.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Brings back memories my late wife and I shared. Thank You
Sorry for your loss. 🙏❤
The mandolin at the beginning. What a sound!
If you've ever had the misfortune to realize that you were only playing a part in somebody else's story, this song hits hard.
We are each the ultimate star in our own movie while at the same time being just a numberless spear carrier in the film about humanity.
yes....yes. so true. And now she gone, forever
\
It just keeps getting better and better each time I listen to it. A present for my ears
only a legend walks on stage with a cuppa BRAVO!!!
@BaldyDude - I love your comment. I also love the way Margo walks on stage with a cuppa BRAVO!!! She does it so well. Yep, only a legend can do that. Thank you for your comment, and your acknowledgment that Margo Timmins is true legend!💕
Cuppa of what 🤔😀

I can listen to this song many times its a haunting sing but, i like it
Another Jewel of a song. So good I had to learn it on my guitar. Thank you Cowboy Junkies and Lou Reed.
Sure wish there were more musicians around who could make that kind of sweet music now days.
Lou Reed always said that the version of Sweet Jane on their breakthrough album, The Trinity Session, was the best ever (including his own!).
I agree the vibe is on another level
@Alexander Martinez - It’s such a joy to post a video and realize how many other music lover’s are riding the same wave while catching the vibe on another level - and loving every bit of it! 💕
Yes , he did
I remember hearing that as well back in the day. Always loved this cover.
RIP Lou Reed.
To hear a song you've known forever for the first time is a wonderful thing.
Top tune from the 70s made into a pure 90s version that sounds amazing.
Similar to the Grateful Dead and the Allman brothers live jams. This song could go on for an hour and more, letting each instrument and her voice take control for periods as it progresses. That guitar playing is incredible!
❤️
not to mention the overdriven effected mando :)
Very well said 😅
I think this is the fastest 6 minutes in music. I always have to loop this, as I am a junkie for this song.
I'm eternally grateful the universe introduced me to this amazing soul
Margo is awesome
Lou loved the cowboys version of this song
Did lou ever join this band onstage
@pstick9934 No, but he did give them praise on stage in October 2013, after inviting them to come see him play.
@pstick9934 Cowboy Junkies
the Cowboy Junkies who put the bridge back in this song" and he continued on in to the bridge. It doesn't get a whole lot better than that ....a shout out (before the term existed) from the stage by an idol who is not known for being gratuitous with his praise.
Good bye Lou...thanks for transforming my life…..for the inspiration...for showing us all how it should be done....we miss you
already....
"Sweet Jane" and "Fade Into You" were the two songs that bring me back sweet and sour memories with my old girlfriend.
on my 30th b-day i scored a cd player, caution horses were the first cd i bought, i am turning 65 soon, it still plays. i saw the junkies perform at laxon in chico cal. wonderful concert. memories
I love this band my bf Andrea and i saw them at a small venue outside of Philly in the 90s.
I sat and talked to Margo for maybe a minute before the show.
She remembered my name when the show was over.
Andrea and I laughed and joked and swapped stories with them them for an hour after the show. Great musicians, even greater cool people.
Stay high my friends.
Mann Music center? That’s where I caught awesome music in the 90’s. Great music, views, friends, woods to pee in😂, great memories.
Mitichissimo! Complimentoni assai
Wow... Great version!!!... The Cowboy Junkies killed that song!! Bravo/Brava!!!!
I saw her the first time in the early 70s , she was alone on the stage playing her guitar and singing
She was amazing
Not to many covers can touch this, actually nobody
This is boring if you want to start moving go to Mott the Hoople the best cover of this
All comments welcomed as long as there is no trolling.
@@marklaumond5241mark- read the room nothing touches this version
The bass line is crucial to make this beautiful song. I think Lou would really like this version. The tempo is dead on. And the accordion and mandolin fit perfectly for the melancholy lyrics…
Nothing can kill this beautiful love we have known for decades but it woke up when you returned at last with heavens unyielding❤❤ ❤❤
Fantastic! All aspects of it. Mandolin, guitar, and a freakin’ accordion with Margo’s great vocals. Doesn’t get any better. Turn it UP!
Its magical how the instruments all come in. And her voice is a calming sultry presence
Oh Yeaah.
Nice desciption ...SULTRY PRESENCE !
This music speeds directly to your soul…emits emotion…and makes you want to hear it over and over!
Quite glad Miley Cyrus covered this song .. For one it may be fall in love with this it is and secondly she did it good
Miley the whoore murdered it..
the way they do it together is what makes this song for me.
A voice of milk and honey. Accompaniment glorious.
Silky and sultry at the same time. Amazing vocals!
One of the best songs of all time, whether arranged as hard rock, alternative, folk, pop or bluegrass.
Having Eclectic music taste like I do its like WOW.
Fairytelly wonderful.
Was in the audience for this gig in Liverpool in 2004, had to wait until 2006 for the video of the concert entitled 'Long Journey Home' to be released, and because the concert was being filmed, tickets were free! I'm 75 now and still enjoying it. (22.06.24)
The gig was at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Oct 7th 2004. (22.06.24)

Thank you for sharing your experience - an experience of a lifetime💕
Never heard a Mandolin played quite like this. I am impressed.
The Trinity Session remains one of my favorite albums of all time... but this version is just beyond words brilliant!
Bought the album ,played it on a single speaker record player! In 1970 I purchased an 8 track “”Stereo “ when I heard the 8 track it was like hearing it for the first time !
4:28 I’ve watched and listened to this video literally 100’s of times. I never tire of it…each time is like the first. I wish I had seen them live.

@danmmmarthy3599 - Thank you for being such a devoted fan of the Cowboy Junkies version of “Sweet Jane”! I love that you love it!
Margo absolutely smolders with her sultry delivery .
wow... what a great version.... Lou Reid said this is his favorite version. I like playing both live versions, RockNRollAnimal and the Cowbory Junkies version.... WOW... And the Junkies is a tight band... And one beautiful woman leading the band. I couldn't concentrate playing without looking at her in a loving way.
@aciccare - Thank you for your comment 💕
Thanks for the post! Can listen over and over! Then more!
I saw them in 1998/1999 on the campus of OSU at Newport Music Hall. During the songs, total silence as the audience took in what was one of the most heartfelt concerts I’ve ever been to. I’m so glad I was able to see them live even once. Her voice, is perfection.
OMG, how incredibly beautiful !! Lou Reed the master. Cowboy Junkies, artful masters. Blended to perfection!!
'Way cool how the mandolin escorts the tune in with distortion and then flies over and under it!! So cool, bravo, with accordion!! Yea...cool as cool can be!! Well done, Lady and gentlemen!
Aint that amazing!!!! Wow!
Never heard a mandolin do that and I've seen some amazing mandolin performances from Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers.. I guess I never thought to put effects and overdrive on a mando. Cool stuff
Fucking Superb. I can listen to it back to back, day after day!!!
I can't get enough of these old classics that I search for when I'm in the mood and love so very much with my heart and soul and every fiber of my being.
The empathy of John Prine, who could look out of the eyes of anyone, will never disappear as long as this song is around.
How does this relate to John Prine?
Total and complete Canadian content! After hearing this you'll have a heart no doubt!❤
if i recall correctly, Lou said this was one of his favourite covers ... Margo and the band just nailed it ...
@@philbo-ns You are correct!💕

Awesomely underrated band -- just amaing chops all around.
IMHO the definitive cover of this song is by the band Two Nice Girls, who released their cover in 1986.
i love this band & love Margo’s haunting voice!!

I've always loved this song, both the original and the Cowboy Junkies cover. First time I've heard this live version, and must say I really like it, especially the addition of the accordion and that electricrifried mandolin mayhem

Fantastic musical performance! Musicians at their best.
This is a need to hear song everyday. Thank you Cowboy Junkies
While it's a departure from the original, I love it. Very dark and moody.
Okay, I remember seeing them live now (with John Prine!) & thinking, wow, this isnt like the record-- these boys can rock!

The way Lenny Laye looks at her...always makes my heart swell.
Just saw them this past Friday 03/02/23 here in Melbourne. It was a beautiful concert; she had a bit of a cold but was excellent nonetheless.
Love everyone in Australia but Geeze is it already March down under?
Saw her in Sydney - she was quite unwell but got out of bed to perform - a great concert and an appreciative audience.
Still have one….people have hurt it but it’s still living and loving!
Man oh man. Who doesn’t love “Sweet Jane?"
LOVE HER. LOVE THEM. LOVE THIS.
They all do a fantastic job, but that drummer just nails it.
He's one of Margo's three brothers in the band.
He's so laconic. It's amazing the beat doesn't just fall off of the bone, but when it does it's planned and rhythmic. This guy is the pulse.
