This came out in 88. I was 14 and I bought this and I remember laying in my room with my headphones in the dark and listening to the album over and over. I think most of my friends were listening to Bon Jovi. I was into Cowboy Junkies.
I was at a summer concert in Winter Park CO and I was walking around with a cool Cowboy Junkies T-shirt (brown t-shirt with big white block letters that said: COWBOY JUNKIES) on and a woman said "All right, a Cowboy Junkies fan." She was happy that I knew who the band was because they were just getting national attention. She was just so casually naturally beautiful and friendly. I felt so good just standing next to her talking with her. And later on when the band took the stage they were most excellent.

This was recorded around the corner from my apartment in Toronto at Bloor and Spadina. In 1995 I was at an all night squatters' party in Amsterdam on the Azart, a minstrel ship. This was one of the tracks playing as I fell asleep in a hammock with the ship's cat lying on me. I won't forget. This track is home.
First heard this watching Natural Born Killers in the 90's, and now this popped up during Fear Street 1994. Didn't even know this was based on a Velvet Underground song.

90's always had the 60's vibe to me... a touch of hippies and open-minded music going on. The style even reverted to '60s in some instances. Great decades both, had their problems, but oh so much greatness. 50's, 70's and 90's best decades ever. I'm 55 so I was born in 66, so I didn't get to experience the 60's as a young adult like I would have, but I did get to experience the 90's as a twenty-something and it was fucking great!!!
Hello from Russia. Beautiful voice, beautiful song. I've heard it a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Still love it and was glad to run over today
I know this song from the film, Natural Born Killers. I grew up to this film, (don't judge me) is incredibly surreal and abstract. Written by Tarantino, actually about the mass murderer Starkweather and his girlfriend. Quentin has secretly been obsessed with this story(knowing the story and knowing his films will make that evident), but is also the first time woody Harrelson played a dark role. The reason the director picked woody is because of woody's past; the fact he grew up being raised by a father who made his money by being a hitman. Imagine that. The greatest stories are the ones never told... just hinted on by little remarks that go unnoticed. Like gems inside geods that go unbroken for thousands of years.
Back in 88, maybe 89 while we were out camping a friend of mine commented on this new band he liked and their rendition of Sweet Jane. I didn't pay much attention to him at the time since we had very different musical tastes. Its like hearing an angel sing when she does that lalala shit at the end.
Your "lalala shit" comment reminded me of the song "Pop Loser", by Velocity Girl - another wonderful Indie band of my Uni years of the mid-90s that I still absolutely adore as well.
yep
No shit
Thaddius Glunt 90s angel
Allison Perry this song is actually from 1988. Not from the 90s
She has such an incredible haunting sultry voice. Anyone who says otherwise has no soul. Just beautiful
Couldn't have said it better my friend
@Karl Lentz thanks for taking the time to show random people how you go out of your way to be insufferable. Good job! I would pat you on the back but I bet you do that for yourself all the time.
She totally has a smokey jazz vocalist's voice, doesn't she?
@Karl Lentz please go on and on and on. You are nailing my point home. Thanks. 🖕😂😂😂
@Karl Lentz thats incorrect. I have been commenting on UA-cam for 10 years. Your self importance is extremely exaggerated
I picture myself walking into a bar and hearing this live. Would I be cool enough to handle the vibes?
It's like someone right next to you that you love cant hear a word you say nor hear your vibes. Loneliness, sadness and disappointment. It is as if you are both in a different world.
Brings back the late 80s who still listens in 2020?
ja też!
Great music in the 80s. Loved it.
This song kinda hurts to listen to, I miss my youth so, so very much. Also, I was in a horrific car accident and lost my right leg in 2017 (hit ice and slid off a mountain). Died twice, broke my back, lost my right leg and guess what song I was listening to, lol. it's still my fav album of all time.
Love this song as much now as in the 80's. Haunting vocals....even Lou Reed loved it!
Egor Anonymous sorry about all that - life is always changing - but, yes, we revisit our youth - at least I do too- take care - there are good years ahead ♥️
I love this song. That beat is easy & steady. The country-folk-rock stuff from the 90s was excellent.
The stuff in the late 70s and early 80s
Was Golden..
I'm old enough to remember the hippies to good music, poor hygiene
@@brianpeters5555 😀👍
Have you heard of The Jayhawks? They’re kinda similar, roots rock with country influences.
I agree with every word you said
This was recorded around the corner from my apartment in Toronto at Bloor and Spadina.
In 1995 I was at an all night squatters' party in Amsterdam on the Azart, a minstrel ship. This was one of the tracks playing as I fell asleep in a hammock with the ship's cat lying on me. I won't forget.
This track is home.
That sounds like a lie. And you're gay.
That's so fucking awesome! What a amazing memory
Corner? Suitcase in your hand?
old-school A-dam squats were the shit! Did you ever hit the Vrankrijk?
Every 90s kid in Canada has gotten drunk, hungover or chilled to this song
she covers you like a warm fuzzzzzy blanket...
Like smack does too
First heard this watching Natural Born Killers in the 90's, and now this popped up during Fear Street 1994. Didn't even know this was based on a Velvet Underground song.
I just discovered this fact, myself, & I've loved this song for decades. I immediately went & listened to the original.
This is a Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) song. It's about a transvestite prostitute that he fell in love with.
this song meshes well with movies. they cut spoken word from mickey and mallory from NBK into this and the song went bigger.
Thank you........thank you..........thank you
Yup. Remember it from that movie too. But here because of AHS Hotel
Many of the comments reflect upon a loved one's death. I pray we'll all know true peace & acceptance plus pass on some of the love we knew/learned while they were alive & become better humans in honor of the bonds of love shared with the departed. My spouse died in 2000, my sister in 2015, my only son in 2019 & my last sis has stage 4 cancer. I'm learning much about grief, surviving it & surprising myself in the process. There are treasures to be found in darkness. Please be safe in these weird times.
Lovely thoughts & words. Thanks.
Sorry for your losses, but like forrests on fire, spring back to life, more vibrant than before

Such a unique interpretation of a great song. Still sounds perfect after all these years.
This song brings me back! I totally wish I could go back in time to the 90s! It was probably the best time of my life back then!
I feel exactly the same
Take me back to 1992 please!
take me with you, sue
I agree it was it was the last honest decade u know
I was born 1992....
a cowboy junkies cover of the velvets' matrix live performance. in my humble opinion the most beautiful version of sweet jane; laid back and sensual, with lyrics to kneel down to. i bought the trinity session album when it came out, in '89. seems like an entire lifetime that's gone by since. if anybody out there wants to test their time machine, tell me, and i'll be your volunteer to travel back into the eighties. love and peace everybody, best wishes from austria ! ❤️🐌.... ... .. .
I remember listening to this after I broke up with my girlfriend junior yr in 1996. .. time flies, but the heart never forgets
First heartbreak, yep.
One of the best songs ever. Even Lou said it was the perfect cover...
I am having a terrible year so far, this song is my salvation.
Also from the movie flight, such a great film. I love this moody, blue, song.
I hope your year gets better.
@@squamish4244 thank you for your kind words.
I know how that goes. This has been the worst year of my 43 years. Growing closer to Jesus Christ and giving Him my burdens has helped. If you've never trusted Jesus as your Savior, you should do so. Allow Him to be your salvation.
I hope your year gets better.

Hi. Thank you for your very comforting reply to my quote. I do pray, but sometimes it feels like my prayers aren't being answered. I do believe in prayer. Maybe I should do it more. I am sorry your year is terrible too, I dare not hope things will be any better next year. I live in hope But I hope things improve for you. God bless. Take care.

One of the most beautiful songs ever made.
My Moms name is Jane and this song reminds me of her every time I hear it, especially the line about heavenly white roses seem to whisper to me when you smile...she’s always loved roses. When I get married I want this to be our mother and son dance.❤️🌹
This is one of the sweetest things I've ever heard!
This is so cute :)
Are you single & don't wanna be? 😊
Jane says?
Sorry for your loss. I'm sure she is proud of you 😊
Her singing, even the guy, Lou Reed, who wrote it, his jaw would drop in awe !
Driving a dark highway east of Dallas during the summer of 93, late at night with Trinity Sessions playing! Needless to say, surreal!
In a sweet and kinda quiet way, this song has always been a backbone of the 90's.
I love how she makes it sound like "heavenly blue eyed bruised roses seem to whisper to me"
Saw them I a small club in Milwaukee & they knocked it out the park !!! This freaking Album rocked & this is their best tune ♥️💋 1988 Rocked ! ✔️🎯💯
The person who is singing is pure of heart.
My husband was from back east. He loved all things Lou Reed. I miss them both
This song is bittersweet to me cuz my mom used to sing us this to sleep when our power went out or we went to bed hungry. I’m reminded of our hardships but hopeful for a new day.
Grew up on this song and I loved it back in the 60s and still love it in 2023 sweet Jane sweet sweet Jane your the shit fr
Hi Felicia
Hello from Russia. Beautiful voice, beautiful song. I've heard it a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Still love it and was glad to run over today
This tune goes down like velvet!!! Beautiful
I see what you did there!
Your not wearing that
Her & Hope Sandoval from mazzy starr put me into a dream state every time. Hauntingly beautiful
Oh...my...goodness. Never gets old. A truly magical performance of a spectacular Lou Reed composition.
I came to look for this song after watching fear street 1994 then it brought me here, and I don’t regret it at all.
Same as Fear Street 1978 too.
Spoilers:
but with Nick and Ziggy
@@shawnofdanaukota3843 I really love the runaways and kurt cobain homage from 1978
Same. I saw Natural Born Killers when it was in the theatres. Bought the soundtrack shortly after,. This and many other great tunes on the soundtrack.
me too
I know this song from the film, Natural Born Killers.
Saw her in concert in Midland Ontario 6 or 7 years ago. She’s lost none of the magic. Voice is still as haunting and beautiful
Hey Friend it is 5am and again I return just to be haunted by her vocals I Absolutely would enjoy seeing them play . Have a Wonderful Day / Night 🙏🏼
I love this song...2021, still brings a tear..
I like this slowed down version best👍🏻
This is the most beautifullest song in the wide world.
Margot has the perfect tone for this. Sensuous, enchanting, haunting, effortless. I agree with Lou, these guys are the ones to cover his song.
Back in 88, maybe 89 while we were out camping a friend of mine commented on this new band he liked and their rendition of Sweet Jane. I didn't pay much attention to him at the time since we had very different musical tastes. He passed away 7 years ago and every time I listen to this song I really really want to say "You were right John"
Epic song. Brings back memories from my youth.
Love this version.
Yes. I like it better than Lou's.
Me too
Best better than lou
Mayans! Great music!
Much same...
Just can't stop listening to this song. Thinking about my crush the whole time. Hope he finally gives in. ❤️
Their take on this song still captivates me all these years later. It really is something special.
One of my all time favorites. This is how you introduce people to the Cowboy Junkies
If Lou Reed said this was the best cover of his classic....who am I to disagree??.....I've been saying it for years!!
MOTT THE HOOPLE
If Lou Reed blessed off on it; that’s pretty much the end of it
@@dmcrun3572 he was jealous of MOTT THE HOOPLE...
Hits my heart to the core.
"Heavenly wine and roses....." -- no matter how many times I've listened, this never fails to pierce my heart.
All covers should be held to this standard
Its like hearing an angel sing when she does that lalala shit at the end.
Simplicity can sound so sweet.
My sister gave me this CD for my bday in the 90's. I was thinking, "Ok, well." Ended up loving it.
💯one of the loudest soft songs ever ✌🏻
Always thought Junkies had the coolest T-shirts, Cowboy Junkies in concert...Shhhhh
This recording brings tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY.
It makes me cry cuz it makes me feel the young girl innocence, and the innocence of love.. I cry every time, such an emotionally evoking song
Crying right now.....sometimes happiness can make you cry....wait, that's another good one!
