Sounds killer Zach... Things that people don't realize is the BE is more plexi like than 800.. You could dial it it to be almost the same though.. C45 is closer and the middle on the response switch. Maybe the gain structure reduced to match up to the 800..
@@ZachWish hey man do you use a boost like the 808 with the hbe channel? And another thing can we compare the hbe channel to something like a marshall jvm or something?
The 800 sound is so classic that it's hard to not see it as a good standard. When something becomes so used, everything else is either too bright, too dark, or too anything. Regardless, great video, and for me at least the 800 was the winner here!
most custom amp makers claim it's the JTM/Plexi and slag off on the 800, but most customers prefer the 800 in my opinion (maybe with a boost, but still the 800). It's an iconic sound even without a pedal. Idk why boutique players constantly give the high watt plexi takes on why the plexi is a better amp etc.. i disagree. But i love both tones jtm to 800.
Is it wrong that I have this video cranked while I do stuff around the house? Just a KILLER selection of riffs (and tones too)!!! I love your Peavey 5150 II ("Classic For A Reason") video as well. Keep up the great work; great chops and great content!
Both mixed would be heaven. JCM800 has that punch in your face openess and that friedman has the spongiest, smooth, and perfectly plausant frequency spectrum.
They can definitely be dialed to sound more similar to one another. Comparison videos are always a little goofy in that respect because it's just a snapshot of two different amp settings but it's good fun! Personally, I'm going with the Friedman as it's my main recording / gigging amp, but I do love them both for different reasons. Thanks so much for checking out the video!
As of today, I have the same set up. I have the JCM800 2203 and I just bought a Friedman BE 100 Deluxe today. The only difference is I have a Marshal 1960B cab loaded with 2x V30 and 2x G12H Cream backs. I also ordered the Friedman 4x12 today with the V30s and Greenbacks.
@ZackWish I still keep referencing this video and part 1. It helped me decide give up my BE DLX for an ‘81 2204. I have a JJ-100 w/ resonance knob and it hits my ears better than the BE did, no matter the settings. Simpler amp, like the 800, and now I can do new and old JC tones. The DLX will find a perfect home, and I am 100% happy with the choice, and this comparison was a big help. ✌️
Having a 1983 Jcm800 2203 and having A/B'd the two (luckily! Unfortunately the BE100 was not mine) here was my take... Jcm800...a classic. No, THE Classic. More aggressive top end and presence. The sound you know and love. BE100...amazing. Just a phenomenal amp that is definitely the more versatile of the two. Sounds more refined so maybe perceived as "better" when played solo. However, I felt the 800 cuts through a mix a BIT more predominantly. Either amp is a stone cold KILLER. GREAT video!
Right on! I definitely agree that there's something really classic about the 800. I kind of look at it like a great old muscle car vs a modern luxury sports car. They're both awesome to drive, but if I'm making a long haul drive across a country, I'd probably opt for the modern ride. Can't go wrong with either though! Thanks very much for checking out the video.
@@ZachWish nailed it! If I'm going out to the local car show, bringing the classic muscle car. If I'm doing a rally, going modern. Haha cheers man! Subbed!
Great video! First of all thanks for not talking too long at the beginning with the “First, a little about me…“ , thank you for wearing long pants and skipping the shorts, thank you for tuning your guitar, thank you for using a microphone and attenuation, and thank you for playing chords and not soloing the whole time! I like both but the upper mid range of the Marshall makes it clear winner. I’m assuming the BB is only a clean boost? I wish you would’ve edited back to back clips from each amplifier I found myself fast forwarding and rewinding to hear that Alice In Chains song for instance, to hear a true A/B comparison. Since you’re in the room is the Friedman more compressed than the Marshall? The Marshall feels a little bit “dangerous“ it’s hard to put into words or quantify but it comes across. That’s one reason I never bought a Friedman it sounded a little too smooth. I see you have a matchless independence I used to have one of those I made a video of it on my page. Have you tried to EQ some “Kerrang” into to the Friedman? I think having the extra gain is appealing but the recording doesn’t lie that Marshall sounds fantastic!
Thanks a bunch for the kind words. Yep, the BB Preamp is used only as a clean boost with the gain on 0 and the volume on max. I thought about editing the video in an AA/BB/CC sort of fashion, but I felt like it was boring listen to the same riff again and again, although, you're right that probably would have been better from an A/B standpoint. I always find comparison videos a little weird because it's just a snapshot of two different amps with two different EQ settings. These two could definitely be dialed in to sound more like one another if I had them on an A/B switch. The Friedman comes off as having less high end in this video, but it can be added in with Presence. The Friedman is much more compressed feeling than the Marshall which makes it feel easier to play and a little bit more inspiring (to me at least). The JCM800 is a little bit punchier. Either way, I love both of these amps. Thanks so much for checking out the video!
@@ZachWish That's a totally accurate statemant. The Freedman is more compressed and 800 punches you in the chest. It will cut through the band mix better too. Not bad for an almost 40 year old amp.
Yeah I have to give it to the Friedman. Probably because it has more of a plexi sound, which has always been superior to my ears. Really good side by side dude, thanks!
Both amps absolutely killed! I kind of dig the Marshall a little more and the Friedman was insanely close to my grail tone! That crisp top end on the Marshall and dirty chime made it for me with the 800. I miss mine now. Damn. Giving me a case of the GAS haha. You make both amps sound great, good shit!
I prefer the Marshall. Besides that familiar killer tone, it cuts more and has more "sizzle" than the Friedman. Basically it's more balanced while still sounding more aggressive too. It's no wonder this amp ruled during the hard rock, heavy metal, thrash metal age.
To me the Marshall is a better for a few reasons. First of all, the Friedman's always seem to be too bass heavy and muddy at times, where the Marshall's always have that sparkling clean distortion that cuts through a mix much better. The other reason is that the higher end Friedman amps such as this one are priced well beyond the budget of most working musicians and therefore unattainable. You can find Marshall's listed on the secondary market for much less than a new one, where as a seller trying to get rid their Friedman usually wants more for theirs than what a new Marshall would cost. I ended up finding a JVM 410 half stack that came with a vintage cab and selector switch for $1400 in like new condition. Either way to each his own, buy and play what sounds good and that you can afford within your budget.
All fair points. These comparison vids are usually a bit skewed because you can always EQ amps differently to either be more similar or more dissimilar. This is just a snapshot of two different amp settings. I love a JVM though! Not trying to be a shill for one over the other, I genuinely love both amps. I will say that after having owned a boatload of amps, the BE-100 Deluxe is my go to when it comes to playing shows and recording. All depends on the kind of music you're playing as well. Thanks a bunch for checking out the video!
I sold my JVM 410H two weeks ago (finally!) for 680 Euro! Nobody wanted it for more. And even had a mod to it done by a good tech, to get rid of that awfull hiss on the OD channels. I had (and still have) a lot of Marshalls (2203,2204, 900 SL-X, 800 KK, JVM, TSL,1959 SLP,...) and this is the amp that Marshall should have made. I bought one and I am not complaining about the money. People are buying 4000 USD guitars all the time but when it comes to amps all of a sudden they're on a budget. To me that's the most important chain in the link.

The Friedman does sound lovely but just love the spank, bark and growl of the 800. I run an 800 together with a VH4 and the 800 adds the clarity and snarl while the VH4 brings the huge bottom end and low mids. You can’t beat the sound of a JCM 800! There’s a reason it’s a classic!

Marshall all the way. More in your face, more "rock" and classic with great bite. The friedman sounds more modern, maybe better for modern metal but only for that.
@@kommi1974 don't need to be insulting mate, neither a fanboy. Tone is subjective and everyone has different ears and experience. You can see in the comments that it's not only me that likes the Marshall better in this comparison. If Friedman does it for you though, go and grab one, end of story :)
Both great. I own a Marshall and 2 Friedmans. When I play my BE it's like I playing through a rock stars rig. Also, there are so many tone shaping devices on the amp it is more multi dimensional vs the M. IMHO Really enjoyed the playing and choices!
One of my fav Smashing pumpkins songs! As much as I love bands that play well between melodic and heavy rock/metal styles, I cant stand the overly played radio songs of theirs and those that claim they are "fans" of them just because of that. They let all the more driven songs go unnoticed and unappreciated. But that's just my two cents lol
On my JCM 800s I change a few things electrically. I remove the bright capacitor on the gain potentiometer. I change the 470K and 470pf from gain pot to jack to a 220k resistor. I add a 330uf cap parallel with a 1k resistor to the existing 10k cathode bypass V1b. I add a pair of 0.1uf caps to the existing 0.022uf linking the preamp to the power amp. End result sounds like Iron Maiden.
Friedman for me. You can't feel the dynamics of an amp watching a UA-cam clip and you can't know how it responds until you play it in person. I feel like a rock star every time I play my BE100. The girth is huge and three dimensional sounding. Never experienced that with any Marshall.
You make great demos. I bought a Matchless Laurel Canyon in part because of your demo. ( that amp was forgettable and long gone but you made it sound good!) A healthy 800 stomps the Friedman and any other "boutique build IMO. Having owned countless boutique ( or once boutique) amps over the last 20 plus years in a silly quest for "tone", I have found personally that a good Marshall is unbeatable, Honorable mention to an AB163 Fender Bassman.
I’m down with the 800: Less can really sound more! Simplicity in itself! Great riffing dude! Need to have more demo with chords instead of high-speed licks n selfish leads!
Thanks so much! I agree, at least for my tastes, I can tell more about an amp from some chunky chords, but all personal preference. Thanks for checking out the video!
Interesting... Jerry Cantrell, Steve Stevens, Bill Kelliher, Dave Grohl, Chris Shiflett, Jake E Lee etc... don't seem to have any issues with their Friedman's in the mix in the studio or live.
I think the 800 is sounding much better, the 800 eq has that treble bright that make it definitely more rounded and richer. I f you only hear the Friedman sounds good, but when you compare to the 800 you can realize there is something missed in the Friedman's Eq. Great video, thank you !
Yeah, I definitely have a soft spot for an 800, but I always try to keep in mind that this is just one EQ setting on the BE. It can definitely be brightened up with the Treble & Presence controls to more closely match the 800. The 800 has more inherent brightness to it which can sound awesome and cut, but can also be pretty fatiguing. Also, when I'm recording an 800 in a mix, I'll generally EQ out a bunch of that top end which makes it sound more like where the Friedman wants to live to my ears. If I ever grab an amp switcher, it could be cool to flip instantly between them. Either way, two of my favorite all time amps. Thanks so much for checking out the video!
great guitar, great amps, speaker and recording. hard to go wrong with either amp. Brand New JCM800 2203 $3000 and Friedman BE-100 Deluxe $3799. Les Paul into Marshall will always be the sound in my head. I'll take the Marshall. and have $799 found a couple of nice pedals.
Don't know where you're located but where I live a brand new JCM800 is $1800, a 1959HW is $2000 and a JVM410H is $1300. Meanwhile a brand new BE100 Deluxe is $4200, lmao. I can buy two Marshalls and still have money to spare for pedals and what not :P
Where I live the BE-100 Deluxe is $3999 and the reissue 2203x is $ 3500. It's definitely not cheap but I have been thinking about it this way, more useful applications with more channels, more control over the overall tone as well for $500 more. I've been told the 2203x will be difficult to control for all applications volume wise. Friedman gets me everything I need and still gives me the classic style Marshall tone.
Both sound great but there's more of a stringy, vicious bite to the Marshall that seems a little more muted in the Friedman. As you say you could probably EQ the Friedman to get close but it seems like it's just 'right there' with the 800.
IMHO, Your new recording sounds much better and are much more pleasing to the ear. Those ear-fatiguing highs are now gone and beautiful midrange is much more present. I would say that´s the guitar spectrum mostly anyway :) Can you share your Mic/IR recipe with us ? thanks /,,/
Don't get me wrong Marshall sounds great, but there is something about the friedmans that catch my ear, Whatever frequency it has that the Marshall doesn't really tickles my fancy LOL, even though they're different amps, my Dirty Shirley has that same frequency it's a sort of bark in the mids (not sure how to explain it) and it seems like u know what Im talking about because u play riffs that accentuate it...... Maybe frequency is the wrong word..... Character? Idk but there is something in the Friedman that barks more and sounds thicker....... The marshalls always have more upper mids to my ear..... Maybe it's the low mids I like so much about the Friedmans? They just always sound full and thick but still searing and biting
What tube is in your marshall v1 position please. That tone is really something special to my ears. What power tubes also? Perfect riffing mate. Flawless.
@@ZachWish I commented on your LP Custom and its pickups that you used in Round 1. The Classic and Classic+ are great pickups too. I think they tend to sound a bit more scooped than the 490R/498T combo and a bit lower output as well.
Great playing, presentation, and audio! Maybe more shorter back to back riff comparison between amp models. Friedman had a little more fatter sound generally,a nice crisp but warm bite and beautiful clarity in chords despite heavy gain settings. The Marshall i think won for me because it had a more even keel and lovingly familiar tone and crisp bite. Next time,i want to see what they sound like with me behind the axe...HAAHAHA😜😁😁!
Another great demo! I wonder how these amps would sound with more neutral-sounding speakers like the G12-65's. The G12-75T's are very scooped-sounding by comparison. Both these amps still sound great though. The Friedman is a bit more refined and compressed as where the Marshall is more open and out of control sounding.
@@facuschmidt9996 Oops, I stand corrected. JCM800's really shine with G12-65's. I think the more "modern" G12H75's would favor the characteristics of the Friedman.

Both great. I own a Marshall and 2 Friedmans. When I play my BE it's like I playing through a rock stars rig. Also, there are so many tone shaping devices on the amp it is more multi dimensional vs the M. IMHO
Really enjoyed the playing and choices!
Thanks a bunch for checking out the video.
Where Boys Fear to Tread!! Nice!!
This guy knows.
End result sounds like Iron Maiden.
dam man that 800 just screams love to see that against the slax...
"Where Boys Fear to Tread" and "Weenie Beenie"! Can it be 1995 again, please? Excellent playing and great video.
Hah! Thanks very much. Love those tunes.
Friedman for me. You can't feel the dynamics of an amp watching a UA-cam clip and you can't know how it responds until you play it in person.
I feel like a rock star every time I play my BE100.
The girth is huge and three dimensional sounding. Never experienced that with any Marshall.
Very good point! I agree, the feel of the Friedman is pretty unbeatable in my opinion. Thanks for checking out the video!
Exactly, people always seem to overlook FEEL in these demos. And the better an amp feels the better you’re going to play and the better it will sound.
Marshall sounds more "in your face" , more present sound. Friedman is a littlebit "in another room". Depends on application :-)
Depends how it's dialed in. Marshall amps always sound thin to me.

Dude... That LP is just...😍
Love your guitar and amp choices, and also the music you play for the demos. I'm susribed!! Keep on!
Thanks very much!
Ha. Both are great, but I still prefer the Marshall. Can't go wrong with either, though I bet the 800 is about half the price.
great tones man, especially going through just an SM57... that's killer man!
Thanks very much!
Effin love The Darkness
There’s only one amp, and it’s a Marshall 🤘🏼
You make great demos. I bought a Matchless Laurel Canyon in part because of your demo. ( that amp was forgettable and long gone but you made it sound good!) A healthy 800 stomps the Friedman and any other "boutique build IMO. Having owned countless boutique ( or once boutique) amps over the last 20 plus years in a silly quest for "tone", I have found personally that a good Marshall is unbeatable, Honorable mention to an AB163 Fender Bassman.
Both amplifiers sound fantastic. But FYI... Weenie Beenie?!? Instant sub. Bravo, sir.
Thanks a bunch! Love that tune.
Zach Wish chunky chords: that I agree! Guess this makes our taste then! 😆
As always, excellent video man!
Thanks bud!!
800 for the WIN!
Every Friedman i get gets sold or traded. They sound great..alone..but in the mix or band or recording..Marshall every time gets the job. Great demo
Nice story. Somebody believed it I'm sure.
Interesting... Jerry Cantrell, Steve Stevens, Bill Kelliher, Dave Grohl, Chris Shiflett, Jake E Lee etc... don't seem to have any issues with their Friedman's in the mix in the studio or live.
LOL the exact opposite is true or you really don’t know how to capture guitar tones
Choice of riffage in this video 👌damn good sir, damn good
Thanks bud!
@@ZachWish good to know. I'm on the fence here. Love them both
great guitar, great amps, speaker and recording. hard to go wrong with either amp. Brand New JCM800 2203 $3000 and Friedman BE-100 Deluxe $3799. Les Paul into Marshall will always be the sound in my head. I'll take the Marshall. and have $799 found a couple of nice pedals.
That's definitely a way to get it done! Thanks for checking out the video!
Friedman gets me everything I need and still gives me the classic style Marshall tone.
appreciate the weenie beenie riff
Great Sounds in this video, nice playing and very cool guitar!
Thanks a bunch Björn!
Marshall all the way
Killer Les Paul! Great vids 👍
Thanks a bunch!
I would say that´s the guitar spectrum mostly anyway :) Can you share your Mic/IR recipe with us ? thanks /,,/
Both amps sound great. Personal preference I guess.
This is true. But those upper mids is what cuts through a band mix.
Gilbert sounded good on the Friedman, but the Marshall has that iconic nasally attack of PG
sweet paul man!!!...is THAT jcm "stock"??...no bright caps clipped / added etc...?killer articulate playing...nice
Thanks! Yep, stock JCM800. Great sounding amp.
What tube is in your marshall v1 position please. That tone is really something special to my ears. What power tubes also? Perfect riffing mate. Flawless.
Zach, thanks for taking the time to create and share these vids. Do you know what year your 800 is? Regards.
Definitely! Thanks for checking them out! It's a 1988 JCM800 2203
That LP is a beaut! What pickups are in it? Also, love the riffing instead of never ending blues licks!
Thanks! Just the stock pickups. Gibson 57 Classic & Classic +. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@ZachWish I commented on your LP Custom and its pickups that you used in Round 1. The Classic and Classic+ are great pickups too. I think they tend to sound a bit more scooped than the 490R/498T combo and a bit lower output as well.
Pumpkins!!!! Ah yeassss
Awesome as all of your vids! Can you do a JJ100 comp?
Great stuff - tasteful playing & unreal tone ...is that passage around 0:58 Paul Gilbert’s solo in Green-tinted 60’s Mind from Mr. Big?
Thanks a bunch! Yep! That's Green Tinted 60's Mind. Love that tune. Thanks for checking out the video!
El34’s I’m the 800 ?
That’s my preference of these two amps.
Yep, EL-34. Both great amps for sure. Thanks for checking out the video.
The Suhr PT 2x12 Cab that Zach use in this vid have G12H75, aka Creambacks. Amazing speakers.
@@facuschmidt9996 Oops, I stand corrected. JCM800's really shine with G12-65's. I think the more "modern" G12H75's would favor the characteristics of the Friedman.
Smashing Pumpkins - Where Boys Fear To Tread \m/
Yeah buddy! Good ear!
Candy Cane walks...dooown + Dam that river= perfection
IS THAT LP THE EBONY BOARD (LP CUSTOM), BUT WITH LP STANDARD POSITION MARKERS? I wanted one back in mid 2000's! VERY COOL INDEED
800 is more open and bright.
Here I prefer the 800. With an EMG 81 and Maxon OD808 this amp can do Death Metal.
OD808X roars into Hate Eternal territory.
Ok thw whole riffage was sweet evwn though i didn't recognize any of it 🤔. I'm telling you I'm a simple 3 chord skatepunk guy who isn't technical at all but man i can relate to your playing (no insult to you) 👍
Hah! I love me some skate punk as well. Thanks a bunch for checking out the video.
Both sound great.... the BE can get really close to the Marshall brightness with the voice switch all the way to the right.
Right on! Yeah it's tempting to make things overly bright on the Friedman as it has a much smoother top end, but I agree. Both are killer.
Voice switch : the middle position is the brightest on my BE 100 Deluxe, just saying..
Marshall
