      I prefer the super leads over the JCM 800 but that’s just personal choice. A Friedman BE-100 makes the Marshall sound like a lunchbox with a empty thermos rattling around inside. You really should try one, traditions were made to be broken

    Although it has less gain, the top end on the JCM sounded more harmonically rich to me, than the Friedman... but they both sound incredible!

    Excellent vid my dude. Only note I would make is I think gear shootouts like this work better when you intercut the two amps, pedals, guitars whatever. So play a riff on one amp then switch to the other, then back to the first for the next riff then back to the second etc. Makes it much easier for the viewer to get a feel for how they stack up against each other! Other than that, great playing, beautifully recorded! All sounds awesome!

    Great comparison! Friedman sounds amazing, but not going to lie it sounded a bit compressed, Marshall was more open and had a bit of extra bite. I do like the "plexi cleans" on the friedman a lot. But you probably have to pay twice as much to get a friedman, migh tas well go for the real deal. Also Wangs makes a hand wired jcm800 that sounds amazing for 500 bucks

    I briefly owned a JCM800 in the mid 90s but because I had spent many years playing solid state amps, I was used to getting a good, high gain sound at low volume. The 800 sounded thin, buzzy & dry at low volume. I bought it cheap and quickly sold it cheap. Man I wish I still had it.
    However, I'm very happy now with my DSL40c. It's more versatile & higher gain than an 800. It also sounds great at reasonably low volume and it has built in reverb. It's the amp I always wanted.
    PS. I also had an early 70's metal panel 50watt head that a good friend basically gave me(for $200!). It sounded fμ¿king AMAZING! However, I severely hurt my back a year later and lost it in pawn. Although I regret selling the 800, it's that early 70's Marshall that still haunts me. She's the one that got away. A volume pedal for the 800 will open up a whole new world for you and that amp. The 800 with a volume pedal to clean it up and a od pedal to kick it up a notch will sound way better and be way cheaper than the Friedman....

      This is so true. The only beef with the 800 is it has to be cranked too loud for it to thicken up by then it's just ear piercing. The 'Friedmans i don't think have this issue. But tone wise .... 800's. They were recorded on more records than one can imagine.

    Marshall sounds more articulate in single notes and cords but the freedman has more hair and its always best to back off it a little bit especially in a band setting too much drive doesn't mix well with all the other frequencys makes it harder for me to hear what I'm playing. I'm thinking about making a "Part 2" to this video, because I'm not super happy with that IR choice. I think it sounds a little too bright/brash. Man its real hard choice. Because i like the natural knock and tone of all marshalls up to the 800 series. And other amps based off the marshall transformer power section. So, do i spend $3000 on a friedman BE 100 deluxe? With multi channels and options? Or do i buy a new 2203X? Other thing is..... all the options on the friedman, im only going to be settling and playing mostly that one favorite overdrive distortion tone. So, do i buy a Marshall the real thing? Or? Hmm? Because really, the 800 here does seem more articulate and has a higher mid-snarl we all love. Or honestly, im thinking just settle for Marshall JVM 215C as in the peach guitars video demo of that amp. Do i really need 100 watts? I like the sound and tone in that video and the footswitching options capable of storing your settings. And, i can still use the the JVM on my 4x12 Marshall vintage cab w- 25 greenbacks. Basically playing in our basement studio and some outdoor small stage band jams. Im 59. Love all old classic and hard Rock. Can be very frustrating picking and choosing when chasing tone. Uug! Lol good video!

      The Marshall wasn't far ahead (in the eighties), it lacked gain. You can merely get an AC/DC sound with it. You have to get some type of boost pedal in front. If it was far ahead they would have built it in..or add an extra gain stage. I know these amps so well, I used two of them in the eighties. In fact, Marshall was behind in the mid to late eighties.

      @@Stefan-Van-der-Pulst That's not totally true. I don't recall what kind of guitar pickups were around then. However, I have a 2204, and once the master volume get past 5 with my Les Paul with Gibson 498's in it, does more than AC/DC. But yes a boost helps.

      @Stefan-Van-der-Pulst 4 роки тому

      @@guitarexpert2245 First, past five on a 2204 or 2203 is ear blistering loud. You won't hear your drummer. And still, at that level you will have a bit more gain (output tube distortion) but not enough for metal. I used Dimarzio Super Distortions and later Duncans JB's, high output pu and still had to boost my 2203 with whatever I could get my hands on.. The 2204 I later had would break up a little sooner but I missed the punch and headroom from my 2203. In 1987 I bought the silver Jubilee but sold it after a few months. Didn't quite like the voicing although it had more gain.. But by that time all kind of amp and rack gear manufacturers had already surpassed Marshall.

    I read a lot of people saying Friedman’s don’t cut that well in a mix....which I think is largely user error. However, haven’t got to bring mine out since this Covid mess started. In your experience, is there a noticeable difference in live cut between these two?

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, definitely user error. If you're not cutting through with a Friedman, you're doing something wrong. They can both be dialed to be very up front sounding. They're pretty different amps though. The Marshall is very stiff and bold and the bottom end can get a bit loose as you push the gain up high, where the Friedman is a lot more pleasing under the fingers in my opinion. A boosted 800 is a pretty undeniable tone though! But I wouldn't worry about either amp cutting. They'll both get the job done. Thanks for checking out the video!

    The Friedman makes the Marshall look and sound like a toy, in my opinion. Of course, art, music, guitars, guitar equipment, and tones are subjective. You won't ever see Any Marshall Amp come with a Lifetime Warranty. This truthful statement carries alot of weight. Friedmans are so much more reliable, they aren't mass produced like Marshalls, while they might be quite a bit more expensive, you get what you pay for..Their tones are so much better than Marshall, If you buy the right Friedman Amp, they have an insane amount of tone mods, and their internal boutique quality parts are of a much better caliber than Marshall. Many people with Marshalls, send their ampheads and combos to Dave Friedman, to be made alot better and sound much better. Thanks for the enjoyable video. I subscribed a while back. I just wish that you would have given the Friedman the demo time that you gave to the Marshall..That's a damn sharp looking silverburst les paul. I love les pauls and their tones, I'm just too afraid to sink a few 1000's of dollars into a guitar, that has known quality control issues these days, that's hit or miss, and the fact that many les pauls have tuning stability issues. I prefer Heritage-150's that are les pauls, hand made, with the quality of a Gibson Custom Shop, for about half the price of a les paul custom. Heritage H-150's go for $2500, the price of a les paul standard. I also prefer the USA made, PRS single cut guitars, like a McCarty SC 594, and the USA made PRS Tremonti single cut. I have one of those and they are fucking amazing. Just like a hotrodded les paul, but with impeccable quality control. Have a good one bro. From Sonny in New Orleans, LA.

    • @guitarexpert2245
      @guitarexpert2245 4 роки тому +4

      I disagree. Jim Marshall's entire idea was to make it affordable for the average person because he really cared. Not like Dave, who's prices are ridiculous. If it weren't for Marshall Dave wouldn't be around. Marshall invented it. Dave just improved on it. I have a 1982 Jcm 800 works perfect. How much more reliable can you get, it's almost 40 years old and sounds amazing. So saying that a Friedman is more reliable than a Marshall is B.S. They haven't even been around as long. I have friends who have Plexi's from the 70's that are still rocking. Marshall's cut through a mix better than any Friedman does. they have more high end midrage sizzle. Friedmans don't have the midrange sizzle, they have a deeper more compressed tone. More professional bands still use Marshall's over Friedmans. That's just a fact. But Friedman amps are surely awsome. Just priced way too high for the average person. Dave is milking it. Plus in this video he's comparing an amp from the 1980's to one from this decade. Not a fair comparison. Would you compare a car from 1988 to a car from today? No.

    • @lovecraftmusic8717
      @lovecraftmusic8717 4 роки тому

      Friedman are just improved Marshalls... Of course Marshalls are mass produced so you have to find that one amp that sounds better than others. But for a non boutique amp from 40 years ago you can't blame. They were ahead of their time and are still used by many.

      @@lovecraftmusic8717 Jim Marshall in his interviews always prefarced "affordable to everyone" He was a nice guy. But times were different back then. Greed wasn't around like it is now. JCM 800 sound great with two or three in series LIVE turned up more than half way. But Friedman just has them beat if just for consistency in build/tone quality.
