Pseudomembranous Colitis: Etiopathogenesis, Clinical features, Diagnosis, Treatment -
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pseudomembranous Colitis is a severe inflammatory condition of the colon, primarily caused by an overgrowth of Clostridium difficile bacteria, usually following antibiotic therapy.
The antibiotics disrupt the normal gut flora, allowing C. difficile to proliferate and release toxins that cause colonic inflammation 🦠.
Clinically, patients present with watery diarrhea 💧, abdominal pain, fever 🌡️, and sometimes bloody stools. If left untreated, it can lead to complications like toxic megacolon and bowel perforation, which might require surgical intervention 🏥.
Diagnosis is confirmed by detecting C. difficile toxins in stool samples or via colonoscopy, which reveals characteristic pseudomembranes (yellowish plaques) in the colon 📊.
Treatment typically involves discontinuing the offending antibiotic and starting specific antibiotics like vancomycin or fidaxomicin 💊.
In severe cases with complications, surgery such as colectomy may be necessary to manage the disease.
