I think the reason why Green and Leaf are so often portrayed with different starters is because of the game’s they’re associated with. The reason Green and Blue swap names in Japan is because Blue Version was the 3rd version released, while in the west it wasn’t since Green Version was never localized. So in Japan Green is meant to represent Blue Version which is why her name is Blue over there and why she has a Blastoise because Blastoise is blue, but in the west since the rival is named Blue, they gave her the name Green but she still has Blastoise since the story of the manga wasn’t changed. When the gen 3 remakes came out though, there was no remake of Blue Version, it was just Firered and Leafgreen with Charizard and Venusaur on the box arts, since Red was associated with Charizard because they’re both red, Leaf became associated with Venusaur, and Blue has Blastoise. This has stuck over the years and I’m guessing the only reason why Let’s Go Green has Blastoise is to keep her in line with manga Green, which is why in Let’s Go, Red and Blue have Venusaur and Charizard respectively despite most modern interpretations like Masters giving them Charizard and Blastoise, it’s because in the manga Red has Venusaur and Blue has Charizard.
Fun Fact: the reason Red in the Manga picks Bulbasaur, is because they wanted Red to have Charizard. However, Green (we'll call him Gary because it gets confusing if I don't), is given the starter that is strong against what Red picks, just like Gary does in game. Because they wanted Red and Gary to have the starter associated with the version they are named after, it made sense for Red to pick the grass starter, that way, they could trade later and get the starter with the type that matches their color. Also Fun Fact: Blue (Green in the west), stole her starter from Professor Oak, just like Silver does from Professor Elm a gen later.
Is not exactly bc of the manga. Just look the early official arts of gen1. Rival has Charizard in all of them and Red the grass one. The manga just used that art of the three characters with their starters as base the same way they used the black dress girl to create Blue

Its pretty simple, Red gets venusaur in gen1 art, and lets go since is based on gen1 just followed it. But thats it, its just artworks, the only way to decide a canon team is going by the times he is battleable, but johto games decided give him all 3 and made pikachu the starter until Pokémon Origins animation gave him a Charizard and others medias followed it
I really like all versions of the Kanto girls, but Leaf will always have a special place in my heart as my second favorite character in the entire series. Her design just speaks to me as a “little adventuress” outfit that I always loved ever since I was little.

Manga green is my favorite version by far as another comment pointed out, her character growth from thief to strong trainer thatd do anything for her friends was great - and on top of that, she caught ALL THE LEGENDARY BIRDS not to use them, but just to get over her fear of birds. I love when they make female trainers really strong, and atleast according to my headcanon shes one of the two strongest ones there are, the other being cynthia.
I just hate that after catching them they are just stored in her box forever, like, they could have been really usefull against Team Rocket and Deoxys in FrLg
Yeah, Red is energetic in the manga yet quiet in the games, Blue is stoic and serious in the manga while annoyingly snarky and overconfident in the games, while Leaf/Green still maintains her teasing, outgoing yet chaotic personality in every universe.

I really like Leaf's design. Maybe it's because I didn't pick up the manga until later or that when I got Fire Red my sister got Leaf Green, so she played as Leaf. And we spent hours playing those games and just having fun. She doesn't really play Pokemon anymore, so Leaf kind of brings back that early 2000s joy of sharing something with my older sister we both enjoyed.
2:10 not just brand synergy. Not only was the outfit a gift from her surrogate brother silver but by wearing it it was her declaration that she was putting her past completely behind her and she was going to move on with her life starting by reuniting with her parents during the FRLG arc.

I feel like Green (Let's Go) (as well as Red (Let's Go) and Blue (Let's Go)) are closer to their manga counterparts than their appearances in other games. They use the same team as they did in the manga, not past games or promotional material. Furthermore, Green's odd habits of trying to catch you, could be thrown up to her unfortunate back story in the manga.
It was a homage to the manga version after all. All while the manga isn't canon at all, GameFreak for years has been taking stuff they like about it and either referencing it, canonizing it or doing an homage to it as a nod to it.
I honestly like Green, she just stands out among most of the typical trainer protagonists. Also filling in a kinda rival. But I just like how simple her design is and yet brings in a lot of personality.
I personally see it as a similar situation with Red and Ash. Red and Ash are two separate characters, while they are counterparts to each other. For example, you won't see Red in the anime, because Ash is basically Red for the anime. Similarly, you won't see Ash in the games because Red is basically Ash for the games. Another example is that Red from the manga and the games are counterparts to each other, but they are not the same person. I think Leaf is just a counterpart of Green for the games. Green exists in the Let's Go games and Manga, therefore Leaf doesn't exist. In Masters, Leaf exists but Green doesn't, because she essentially replaces her. Notice how so far, whenever Leaf exists, Green doesn't, and when Green exists, Leaf doesn't. In the manga, it's clear that Green and Leaf are counterparts because in the manga Green wears the same clothes as Leaf does. While in Masters, Leaf has the only other starter available similar to Green in the manga.
Green changing her outfit to leafs in the manga doesn't mean they're counterparts, its evidence that they're not different characters if anything. I do agree that the way the communitys experienced them can make them feel like 2 different personalities though. Though I wouldn't cite masters in a talk about manga/main game canon. Masters includes all canons(ash+red, green+leaf) because it's a gacha game that relies on fan service to sell products, but that doesn't mean the lore of masters can be used to support arguments about the main or even extended canon. It's basically licensed fan fiction lol. (very well written, to be fair)
I Absolutely Love that Series (I Just think it is way too Edgy some times) But honestly i dont really like how he dropped Green/Blue Personality from the Manga when she has almost the same Backstory (Also, making it so she is the one going through the Sevii Islands was a genious adaptational move)

Here is fun fact for you all. Originally in Japan they were going to release the Gen 1 games as Red & Blue, but decided to replace Blue with Green because they liked the design of Venusaur more than Blastoise. Retrospectively they went with the original plan, the Rival would have been know as Blue around the world including Japan, and the girl would have been known as Green as well. We would never have this name confusion, if Japan stuck with their original plan.

I remember reading the Pokemon Adventures Manga with Green she stole Squrtile from Professor Oak she flirted with Red in the Manga not to mention she's funny to. Green should appear more in Pokemon media she's underrated as a whole and deserves more love. Also she could've appeared in Sun and Moon aged up like Red and Blue that was a missed opportunity!
Big pipe dream is to have Green in Pokemon Masters. It's a real long shot but I did like her quirks in Let's Go. So she would be great to add into the game.
My favourite is honestly Green/Blue. (Spoilers for the manga ahead) Her character arc from a petty thief to a fierce trainer who would do anything for her friends (I'm only at the Emerald chapter) is just amazing! And unlike the other iterations of her character, she has the most depth. From overcoming her fear of Lugia and the Masked Man to trying to save Yellow and turning into stone, it's just brilliant!
I’m also only up to the emerald arc, but yeah, she’s such an interesting character! I wish her manga personality was incorporated into let’s go a little more
Honestly, if they do a let's go johto, then I'd love to see red, blue, and green in their remake looks. Game green genuinely seems like the what if Leaf was in gen 1 originally. The funny part to me is that they could just clear all this up with having green or Leaf be a nickname for said character and there for unifying the game characters.

I'd just add that in Pokemon Unite (commonly known as PokeMOBA), they recently added a mode in which you can battle against a team made of famous trainers throughout the whole series, such as Leon, Cynthia and... Green. And she has the visual of the Let's Go games while being represented with a Blastoise.
I like to think that Green and Leaf are the same person going by different aliases; maybe her actual name is Green but she uses the nickname Leaf to prevent people from confusing her with Blue? Both Leaf and Green have the same hairstyle (long brown hair, shorter clumps hanging by the shoulders, smaller tufts at the top) as well as their shirts having the same pattern and inverted colours. I'm only dropping that theory if Leaf and Green are shown side by side. Manga Green is definitely a separate character, though, just like how every protag is separate from their manga counterparts.

MMmm... but they have different personality. In Evolution we see Green as a jokes, cocky ,stubborn, brave, sarcastic and in end, selfless girl with a particular humour (she attempted to catch Elain like in the games XD) and a strong determination. Leaf in Masters EX rappresent herself as a true Pokemon lover who teach to the young trainers how important it is to love and care for them. Her jokes side emerge in interaction with Red and Blue, where she balance perfectly their personalities.
I know I'm late, but I don't think Green is Leaf Leaf is the female protagonist that replaces Red So if you choose Leaf, there's no Red, and vice-versa, if you choose Red, there's no Leaf Whereas is LGPE, Green is clearly its own character aside from Red and Blue, and not a counterpart to Red in this case
In fact, except for the illustration of the girl with her back turned, a clear female character (the same character) is also featured in a short comic in the guide book and she is the source of Blue(f) in Pokemon Adventures and later in Let’s Go.
technically green is her original name, as japan was originally gonna release the games red and blue as a duo, then changing it to red and green because they liked venusaur's design more, then changing it back to red and blue in other countries. so if japan didn't change their mind last second the name confusion would never have happened
The reason Green was given an anime appearance is as straight forward as they were making a Lets Go animation and shes in the game. I agree its lame they never made an animation with leaf but im not surprised. But again youre coming through with the best pokemon content ive seen in awhile
Out of all the female protagonists from Kanto, I prefer Elaine’s design because I like the hair in a ponytail coming out of the cap, just like Hilda, and I feel like she’s the one that matches the Pokémon protagonist style the most. However, if I had to choose between Leaf & Green, I have to say that I prefer Green because she looks more original, her long hair’s beauty is complimented by the absence of hat and the black dress just looks really great.
I'll say Let's Go Green is the main interpretation of the character, as this game was directed by Junichi Masuda (unlike Masters). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Leaf was given this name in her official figure by the marketing team just because it was the most used name in the fandom, and they were completely unaware that Game Freak was given her a true official name and personality. In any case, for me they are the same character. And given the fact that a lot of people use the name "Leaf" for Green and "Green" for Leaf, I assume I'm not the only one.

Manga Blue (Or Green) for me! I grew up with the mangas so there's some bias but I love that she went from being a thief who doesn't care for anyone but herself to a person who would do anything to help her friends, also her relationship with silver is one of my favorites in the entire franchise. It's a shame that later characters in the manga don't usually get her level of development
the more videos u make on characters the more i start to actually forget what i knew and this point i wont be surprised how if there is a a character that has 8 different versions of it self and they all are now cannon and later get added in Masters talking to each other like that would feel normal and on brand for pokemon at this point
I think Leaf and Green (Blue) are actually the same person and this might a case when the name of a main character has been changed (we alredy have seen that), as with both designs she is refered in official Pokemon media (like Twitter or UA-cam) now days as "Green" ("Blue" in asian countries). I think this is something that also happened to Red and Blue (Green), because they used to have other names before they changed them (being Ash/Satoshi and Gary/Shigeru), and althought she is still called Leaf in Pokemon Masters Ex this maybe is because the game was launched prior to Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee's release and it would be strange to change her name within the game. *Also, I feel that Pokemon Masters should update the Kanto designs of G8, as I actually think they are well improvements from G3 Remakes in most cases.
Pokemon Masters came out almost one year AFTER Let's Go Pikachu, so it really not a Kris situation where she gets completely erased from the franchise after a while.
i kinda prefer red and blue just being called Ash/Satoshi and Shigeru/Gary i never really liked idea of the characters being named after colors (outside of the manga).
When GF remade Gen 1, they obviously had to introduce a female protag, however they could not call her green to accompany Leaf green like red does to Fire Red because they already gave that name to the gen 1 rival. Thus forcing them to create a new female character call leaf. Us outside of japan didn't pick up on this since, the japanese red & green were never localised worldwide instead it was the japanese pokemon blue - which was turned into 2 games that we know as pokemon red & blue. Leading to us assuming that the female was green all along and not an entirely new charecter.
Kris and Lyra are kinda on a different boat. Since unlike Leaf and Green they actually do coexist in a game together. Both Kris and Lyra are in Pokemon Masters.
I always think of Leaf and Green as kind of a similar case to Kris and Lyra. They originally made Blue/Green for the manga (Gen 1) and then made Leaf for FRLG (Gen 3) but then brought back a character with a similar idea for Let's Go. This also mixed up the starters: Gen 1/Let's Go Red has Venusaur (the actual best in gen 1 imo), Rival has Charizard, Blue/Green has Blastoise. Gen 3 Red has Charizard, Rival has Blastoise, Blue/Green has Venusaur. And then there is Yellow and all the other games where Red has Pikachu and all three starters, Rival has Pidgeot ace which he did not even have in Yellow, Green/Blue does not exist at all. In general, Red and Green/Blue/Leaf never coexist outside of manga or Let's Go timelines kind of like Ethan/Gold and Kris. Also in the manga, Kris and Lyra are same character just like Green and Leaf.
I haven't read past the first half or so of the Johto arc (site I used just... well no one was translating) so I don't know much about the manga. But I have seen in other videos that Kris eventually wears Lyra clothing which is just weird... it just doesn't fit her style
So which Leaf-Green portrayal is my favourite? I'm gonna say Adventures Green - I may be biased towards early Pokemon Adventures, but I genuinely love her as a character (my second-favourite Adventures character in general, second to Crystal). I feel it's the character that makes Leaf and Green distinct, since Green in Adventures is a thief and a sass queen, while Leaf moreso gives the impression of being sweet and good-natured. And then Let's Go Green is kind of an in-between for the two, but I find her more similar to Adventures Green, given her whole plot where she seeks out Mewtwo (she was seeking Mew in the manga, but still). Though I will say, I am quite tired of the recurring appearances of Red, namely in Johto and Alola, trying to brush off Leaf as non-canon because... Gen 1 nostalgia. At least Masters made up for that.
After Pokemon Masters and Kotobukiya figure confirmed she was named "Leaf", Let's Go & TCG retconned this by naming her "Green" again same as manga. They are the same, just different outfits. Unlike how Kris & Lyra are far different characters.
For the manga I call them as they are in Japanese because it makes way more sense. Both Green Oak and Blue have those resepective eye colors (at least after FRLG), so that makes it even more difficult to call them as in the games, where sometimes Blue wears green pants... But Leaf was such a great fix to this in the games. Call her Leaf so no one will care whether Blue is called Blue or Green... but then you just throw Leaf out the window and make almost the exact body design and call her Green in English... when she's wearing blue. Just like meeting Blue Corp's CEO in Ace Attorney. He's called Redd White, who wears a pink suit and has purple hair.
I like to imagine that Red and Leaf DOES exist together in the same region but they never interact/run into each other during gameplay. It's a big world out there after all.
it game canon they do masters is the canon of the trainers if not player controlled if your thinking logic of every playthrough is the story canon u are wrong playthrough canon only shows what is necessary to the player but most games and lets go prove this lets go chase elaine live in reds house but red is in lets go and lives in pallet but u dont see his house thats because the game only shows what is necessary to the player but in story canon the reality is there is more than 2 houses in pallet town
I have a headcanon that Red and Leaf are siblings. They know eachother in Masters, have the same mom, wear similar clothing, and that they act like they've known eachother for a really long time makes me think they're siblings.
nope you are wrong read the dialogue in masters and also learn the difference between playthrough canon and story canon masters does story canon Leaf says the sign by Reds house not their house so that means lets go for example chase and elaine live in reds house too even though in lets go Red is in pallet town its just two houses for the purpose of playthrough canon of what is necessary for the player to see but the reality is there is more than 2 houses you should really think of masters as the canon if the trainers were not player controlled compared to the art promoting the games showing them with different starters which is meant to show the art is based off player choice but not the story canon of that trainer

It's funny that I felt it was Evolutions that made it clearer to me that Green is a different character than Leaf. Green at the end of Evolutions didn't seem to have went to the Indigo League, and was purely a Pokedex completionist. Elaine and Chase sees her more like a senior than an equal which is unique compared to Leaf which is seemingly equal to Red and Blue. I think Leaf is carefree while Green feels more serious. I agree manga Green meanwhile is a different character, and her change of clothes could be seen like a manga Crystal where she just updates clothes to her current game counterpart. Makes me wonder if manga Green could've had Elaine's clothes with this logic, but they'd probably agree with me that Let's Go was more of a side-game than a Pokemon mainline remake IMO. Overall it would be nice if something like Masters would have them side by side finally.

I'm quite sure let's go green is literally just supposed to be a merge of the two to finally make people shut up about if the two are the same of different characters. In other words. No green let's go isn't a different character, and neither are leaf of green. Let's go green is literally just a final design that pokemon went with.
I agree the addition of Chase and Elaine now adds to this mess and they're seemingly treated to be all be in the same timeline (albeit I don't think they're in the same friend group) - funny enough we do see both the mindscapes of FRLG Pallet Town (Red) and LGPE Pallet Town (Elaine) and they look different hehe.

I like more the version of Green in the manga, she has more personality and as a character is really good! Her interactions with Yellow, Blue and Red are cute and funny and I love her! Also her background story of her fear of birds and the bond with Silver is awesome. Sure Manga Green is the best female trainer!
Green has some of the coolest battles in the manga She fought against Sabrina at Silph Co, with sabrina against lorelei at sea foam, against Karen at Ilex forest
Actually there is another ver of Green she's less know than her manga counterpart too. There's a ver of her in the pokemon craft dx which I'm pretty sure was published around the same time first volume of pokespe was. She looks kinda similar to manga green but has a white belt, her hair and shoes are also different anyways she's pretty cool and I think more people should talk about her even if she's only in a short craft book
Leaf has the best design in any form of pokemon media, but green from pokemon adventures will always be my favorite because i love her mischievous and sassy personality.

Leaf is essentially what the video implied a character who just kinda existed with nothing to truly call her own. I look at her and just see a nice car with no interior, just something nice for display. I know plenty of people who are actually quite fond of Green especially when you consider Pokemon adventures is the best Pokemon has to offer on the narrative story telling side of things.

Nuance matters and we get the full extent of Greens experiences and her growth of being a mischievous, selfish, seductive, manipulative girl to a smart, crafty, loving person who cares deeply for her friends. The complete antithesis of her previous character, which is nice to see as she’s grown to look beyond herself. Leaf is just Leaf nothing about her is compelling of stands out in comparison to green. Mainly because she’s had no screen time in any other Pokémon media that’s conducive to develop anything worth mentioning of her character, her story is pretty much reds story, except Red far outclasses her in popularity and notoriety. Which is why she’s not in sun snd moon. She’s just always forgotten. So Red just overshadows her in the games. She’s just a game character and that hurts her in the end. Green is far better not because of my opinions, but because she actually has growth and a compelling story from one of the best pieces of media Pokémon has to offer. Your character unfortunately has little to no substance, which is mainly the fault of gamefreak for not trying hard enough with her. I don’t dislike Leaf at all I think she’s cool and has a way better design then greens plain design, but she’s lacking in everything else. It’s very clear your a hardcore Leaf stand that gets triggered over nothing. All I said is that I prefer Green, then you say she sucks out of nowhere showing you have a bias hatred for Green just because I prefer the character that’s more well fleshed out and is compelling. Since i read a translation of the adventures manga i always assosiate them with their japanese names, which is also what their designs takes after. That is too dam confusing; I already assumed that Elaine was her own character. We'll just go with the manga version being either Leaf or Green. My first official Pokemon game was Let's Go! Since the switch was my only Nintendo related console. I was then first introduced to her as Green and as time went on, i see her in Pokemon Masters, known as Leaf and didn't think anything of it. I assumed it was the same character, just older. since names in games from Japan are kinda commonly switched around for overseas simplistic sake. But seeing the Evolutions episode and this video being recommended after it; this has been a real kick to reality. Why couldn't they be the same character from another universe? If Leaf and Green are two different people because Let's Go takes place in another universe than Fire Red and Leaf Green, would that make Red and Blue different people as well who just happen to have the same names? Which would make Red having black hair rather than brown make more sense? Or is it possible for characters to be the same character but have design and name changes, and even have different Pokémon? I'm leaning towards them all being counterparts of each other rather than two different people, Like how Red from Fire Red and Let's Go are just another universe counter parts of each other, and that any version of them is canon.
Funnily enough in Fire emblem there's the protagonist of the 5th game is Leif (older translations literally calling him Leaf). Even more funny is that Altenna the sister of Leif, looks like Leaf but slightly older wearing armor and has a cool dragon/wyvern.
Red and leaf are twins who were separated at birth. The one you choose to play as is the one that was adopted by the Kanto woman we call Mom. This is why they share a mother, have no father and the other doesn't appear in Kanto.

They look the same, walk outside and realize it's the same house, then look at the fact they look exactly alike other than one is female. Leaf is the female counterpart to Red and they have both been seen together as of pokemon masters, which means they can't be the same person.

Out of the group of "brown haired girls from Kanto" I gotta give it to the only one not in this multi generational mess. Elaine to me has the cleanest design here and I enjoy almost everything about it.

Ikr Red's gen 1 and gen 3 designs are more different from each other than the female trainer's gen 1 and 3 designs, yet he's not considered a different character. I don't understand why people aren't using the same logic for Green. It's not that deep.
Let's go timeline maybe in the anime timeline, it shown at the last scene that oak talk to someone in the phone that is likeably ash about the new pokemon in other region.

I love all the versions of the Gen 1 heroine! Althoughh I gotta admit that I do love the Adventures one a whole lot more. (I love the manga soooo much lmao) My ranking would probably be: 1: Manga Blue/Green(f) 2: Lets Go! Blue/Green(f) 3: FRLG/Masters Leaf 4: Elaine Elaine is a nice addition too! I've never thought of her as a Blue/Green(f) or Leaf counterpart, but she is a Gen 1 heroine technically so it makes sense to mention her I never thought of it at first lol I also wonder how it would have been like to actually have Blue/Green(f) playable in the very first Gen 1 games. The manga would probably be the same. Maybe she would have appeared in FRLG like Lyra in HGSS... idk! Red, Green(m), and Blue(f) in Let's Go! are all probably referring more to the Sugimori artwork where Red has a Bulbasaur, Green(m) has a Charmander, and Blue(f) has a Squirtle, but the Manga was also inspired by the very same artwork so the Let's Go! and Manga counterparts having similarities and overlap in Pokemon teams make sense! Red and Green(m) from Let's Go! don't take personality inspo from their Manga counterparts, but Blue(f) seems to have some Manga inspiration in my eyes since she hasn't been an established character in the games until Masters gave Leaf some character. (I think Let's Go! Blue(f) would have gotten her personality from Leaf if she was given a role in FRLG alongside Red and Green(m) since they continue to use their personalities from the games and not the manga in Let's Go!) (But who knows? Maybe she would still be inspired by Manga Blue(f) along with some Leaf) Still, it was a nice surprise to see her in a game finally :D and Masters is also a great way to see more of the heroine too! And now, I will go back to thinking about Pokespe lmaoo I could go on about Manga Blue(f) and the rest of the Pokedex Holders haha
I think because of the manga and Let's Go, I like Green's personality more, but I prefer Leaf's design. So Green from Let's Go might be my favorite since she feels like a mish-mash of Leaf and manga Green.
Elaine honestly does feel more like "girl Red" than anything closer to Leaf. Her aesthetics of course are much more modern and she's younger but otherwise it's closer to him. Another thing is that in the japanese fandom they do sometimes also distinguish the OG Red with Fire Red, which maybe explains the awkward situation with Green and Leaf.

I think the reason why Green and Leaf are so often portrayed with different starters is because of the game’s they’re associated with. The reason Green and Blue swap names in Japan is because Blue Version was the 3rd version released, while in the west it wasn’t since Green Version was never localized. So in Japan Green is meant to represent Blue Version which is why her name is Blue over there and why she has a Blastoise because Blastoise is blue, but in the west since the rival is named Blue, they gave her the name Green but she still has Blastoise since the story of the manga wasn’t changed.
When the gen 3 remakes came out though, there was no remake of Blue Version, it was just Firered and Leafgreen with Charizard and Venusaur on the box arts, since Red was associated with Charizard because they’re both red, Leaf became associated with Venusaur, and Blue has Blastoise.
This has stuck over the years and I’m guessing the only reason why Let’s Go Green has Blastoise is to keep her in line with manga Green, which is why in Let’s Go, Red and Blue have Venusaur and Charizard respectively despite most modern interpretations like Masters giving them Charizard and Blastoise, it’s because in the manga Red has Venusaur and Blue has Charizard.
Fun Fact: the reason Red in the Manga picks Bulbasaur, is because they wanted Red to have Charizard. However, Green (we'll call him Gary because it gets confusing if I don't), is given the starter that is strong against what Red picks, just like Gary does in game. Because they wanted Red and Gary to have the starter associated with the version they are named after, it made sense for Red to pick the grass starter, that way, they could trade later and get the starter with the type that matches their color.
Also Fun Fact: Blue (Green in the west), stole her starter from Professor Oak, just like Silver does from Professor Elm a gen later.

I really like all versions of the Kanto girls, but Leaf will always have a special place in my heart as my second favorite character in the entire series. Her design just speaks to me as a “little adventuress” outfit that I always loved ever since I was little.

Yeah, Red is energetic in the manga yet quiet in the games, Blue is stoic and serious in the manga while annoyingly snarky and overconfident in the games, while Leaf/Green still maintains her teasing, outgoing yet chaotic personality in every universe.

I really like Leaf's design. Maybe it's because I didn't pick up the manga until later or that when I got Fire Red my sister got Leaf Green, so she played as Leaf. And we spent hours playing those games and just having fun. She doesn't really play Pokemon anymore, so Leaf kind of brings back that early 2000s joy of sharing something with my older sister we both enjoyed.

I feel like Green (Let's Go) (as well as Red (Let's Go) and Blue (Let's Go)) are closer to their manga counterparts than their appearances in other games. They use the same team as they did in the manga, not past games or promotional material. Furthermore, Green's odd habits of trying to catch you, could be thrown up to her unfortunate back story in the manga.
Only Green is close to her manga counterpart. They have the manga starters but red and blues personalities are opposite to their gameverse versions
It was a homage to the manga version after all. All while the manga isn't canon at all, GameFreak for years has been taking stuff they like about it and either referencing it, canonizing it or doing an homage to it as a nod to it.

I personally see it as a similar situation with Red and Ash. Red and Ash are two separate characters, while they are counterparts to each other. For example, you won't see Red in the anime, because Ash is basically Red for the anime. Similarly, you won't see Ash in the games because Red is basically Ash for the games. Another example is that Red from the manga and the games are counterparts to each other, but they are not the same person.
I think Leaf is just a counterpart of Green for the games. Green exists in the Let's Go games and Manga, therefore Leaf doesn't exist. In Masters, Leaf exists but Green doesn't, because she essentially replaces her. Notice how so far, whenever Leaf exists, Green doesn't, and when Green exists, Leaf doesn't. In the manga, it's clear that Green and Leaf are counterparts because in the manga Green wears the same clothes as Leaf does. While in Masters, Leaf has the only other starter available similar to Green in the manga.

Masters includes all canons(ash+red, green+leaf) because it's a gacha game that relies on fan service to sell products, but that doesn't mean the lore of masters can be used to support arguments about the main or even extended canon. Here is fun fact for you all. Originally in Japan they were going to release the Gen 1 games as Red & Blue, but decided to replace Blue with Green because they liked the design of Venusaur more than Blastoise. Retrospectively they went with the original plan, the Rival would have been know as Blue around the world including Japan, and the girl would have been known as Green as well. We would never have this name confusion, if Japan stuck with their original plan.

I remember reading the Pokemon Adventures Manga with Green she stole Squrtile from Professor Oak she flirted with Red in the Manga not to mention she's funny to. Big pipe dream is to have Green in Pokemon Masters. It's a real long shot but I did like her quirks in Let's Go. So she would be great to add into the game.

Her character arc from a petty thief to a fierce trainer who would do anything for her friends (I'm only at the Emerald chapter) is just amazing!
And unlike the other iterations of her character, she has the most depth. From overcoming her fear of Lugia and the Masked Man to trying to save Yellow and turning into stone, it's just brilliant!

I'd just add that in Pokemon Unite (commonly known as PokeMOBA), they recently added a mode in which you can battle against a team made of famous trainers throughout the whole series, such as Leon, Cynthia and... Green. And she has the visual of the Let's Go games while being represented with a Blastoise.
For me the original was Green from the manga. Plus I like the trio from kanto having names the relate to each other.

I like to think that Green and Leaf are the same person going by different aliases; maybe her actual name is Green but she uses the nickname Leaf to prevent people from confusing her with Blue? Both Leaf and Green have the same hairstyle (long brown hair, shorter clumps hanging by the shoulders, smaller tufts at the top) as well as their shirts having the same pattern and inverted colours. I'm only dropping that theory if Leaf and Green are shown side by side. Manga Green is definitely a separate character, though, just like how every protag is separate from their manga counterparts.

In Evolution we see Green as a jokes, cocky ,stubborn, brave, sarcastic and in end, selfless girl with a particular humour (she attempted to catch Elain like in the games XD) and a strong determination. Leaf in Masters EX rappresent herself as a true Pokemon lover who teach to the young trainers how important it is to love and care for them. Her jokes side emerge in interaction with Red and Blue, where she balance perfectly their personalities.

The reason Green was given an anime appearance is as straight forward as they were making a Lets Go animation and shes in the game. I agree its lame they never made an animation with leaf but im not surprised. But again youre coming through with the best pokemon content ive seen in awhile

Out of all the female protagonists from Kanto, I prefer Elaine’s design because I like the hair in a ponytail coming out of the cap, just like Hilda, and I feel like she’s the one that matches the Pokémon protagonist style the most.
However, if I had to choose between Leaf & Green, I have to say that I prefer Green because she looks more original, her long hair’s beauty is complimented by the absence of hat and the black dress just looks really great.
I'll say Let's Go Green is the main interpretation of the character, as this game was directed by Junichi Masuda (unlike Masters).
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Leaf was given this name in her official figure by the marketing team just because it was the most used name in the fandom, and they were completely unaware that Game Freak was given her a true official name and personality.

Manga Blue (Or Green) for me! I grew up with the mangas so there's some bias but I love that she went from being a thief who doesn't care for anyone but herself to a person who would do anything to help her friends, also her relationship with silver is one of my favorites in the entire franchise. It's a shame that later characters in the manga don't usually get her level of development

I think Leaf and Green (Blue) are actually the same person and this might a case when the name of a main character has been changed (we alredy have seen that), as with both designs she is refered in official Pokemon media (like Twitter or UA-cam) now days as "Green" ("Blue" in asian countries). I think this is something that also happened to Red and Blue (Green), because they used to have other names before they changed them (being Ash/Satoshi and Gary/Shigeru), and althought she is still called Leaf in Pokemon Masters Ex this maybe is because the game was launched prior to Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee's release and it would be strange to change her name within the game.
*Also, I feel that Pokemon Masters should update the Kanto designs of G8, as I actually think they are well improvements from G3 Remakes in most cases.

Pokemon Masters came out almost one year AFTER Let's Go Pikachu, so it really not a Kris situation where she gets completely erased from the franchise after a while.
i kinda prefer red and blue just being called Ash/Satoshi and Shigeru/Gary i never really liked idea of the characters being named after colors (outside of the manga).
When GF remade Gen 1, they obviously had to introduce a female protag, however they could not call her green to accompany Leaf green like red does to Fire Red because they already gave that name to the gen 1 rival. Thus forcing them to create a new female character call leaf. Us outside of japan didn't pick up on this since, the japanese red & green were never localised worldwide instead it was the japanese pokemon blue - which was turned into 2 games that we know as pokemon red & blue. Leading to us assuming that the female was green all along and not an entirely new charecter.

Funny, Red is even more complicated as a character XD
I always think of Leaf and Green as kind of a similar case to Kris and Lyra.
They originally made Blue/Green for the manga (Gen 1) and then made Leaf for FRLG (Gen 3) but then brought back a character with a similar idea for Let's Go. This also mixed up the starters: Gen 1/Let's Go Red has Venusaur (the actual best in gen 1 imo), Rival has Charizard, Blue/Green has Blastoise. Gen 3 Red has Charizard, Rival has Blastoise, Blue/Green has Venusaur.
And then there is Yellow and all the other games where Red has Pikachu and all three starters, Rival has Pidgeot ace which he did not even have in Yellow, Green/Blue does not exist at all. In general, Red and Green/Blue/Leaf never coexist outside of manga or Let's Go timelines kind of like Ethan/Gold and Kris. Also in the manga, Kris and Lyra are same character just like Green and Leaf.

I haven't read past the first half or so of the Johto arc (site I used just... well no one was translating) so I don't know much about the manga. But I have seen in other videos that Kris eventually wears Lyra clothing which is just weird... it just doesn't fit her style

So which Leaf-Green portrayal is my favourite? I'm gonna say Adventures Green - I may be biased towards early Pokemon Adventures, but I genuinely love her as a character (my second-favourite Adventures character in general, second to Crystal). I feel it's the character that makes Leaf and Green distinct, since Green in Adventures is a thief and a sass queen, while Leaf moreso gives the impression of being sweet and good-natured. And then Let's Go Green is kind of an in-between for the two, but I find her more similar to Adventures Green, given her whole plot where she seeks out Mewtwo (she was seeking Mew in the manga, but still).
Though I will say, I am quite tired of the recurring appearances of Red, namely in Johto and Alola, trying to brush off Leaf as non-canon because... Gen 1 nostalgia. At least Masters made up for that.

After Pokemon Masters and Kotobukiya figure confirmed she was named "Leaf", Let's Go & TCG retconned this by naming her "Green" again same as manga.
They are the same, just different outfits. Unlike how Kris & Lyra are far different characters.
For the manga I call them as they are in Japanese because it makes way more sense. Both Green Oak and Blue have those resepective eye colors (at least after FRLG), so that makes it even more difficult to call them as in the games, where sometimes Blue wears green pants... But Leaf was such a great fix to this in the games. Call her Leaf so no one will care whether Blue is called Blue or Green... but then you just throw Leaf out the window and make almost the exact body design and call her Green in English... when she's wearing blue. Just like meeting Blue Corp's CEO in Ace Attorney. He's called Redd White, who wears a pink suit and has purple hair.

I have a headcanon that Red and Leaf are siblings. They know eachother in Masters, have the same mom, wear similar clothing, and that they act like they've known eachother for a really long time makes me think they're siblings.

It's funny that I felt it was Evolutions that made it clearer to me that Green is a different character than Leaf. Green at the end of Evolutions didn't seem to have went to the Indigo League, and was purely a Pokedex completionist. Elaine and Chase sees her more like a senior than an equal which is unique compared to Leaf which is seemingly equal to Red and Blue. I think Leaf is carefree while Green feels more serious. I agree manga Green meanwhile is a different character, and her change of clothes could be seen like a manga Crystal where she just updates clothes to her current game counterpart. Makes me wonder if manga Green could've had Elaine's clothes with this logic, but they'd probably agree with me that Let's Go was more of a side-game than a Pokemon mainline remake IMO. Overall it would be nice if something like Masters would have them side by side finally.

I agree the addition of Chase and Elaine now adds to this mess and they're seemingly treated to be all be in the same timeline (albeit I don't think they're in the same friend group) - funny enough we do see both the mindscapes of FRLG Pallet Town (Red) and LGPE Pallet Town (Elaine) and they look different hehe.
I've always made the connection between Elaine and Hilda because of the ponytail through the hat and the shorts.
The Leaf/Green thing always confused me. Thanks for summing it up in such a nicely edited video.
To me it seems like Leaf (with Venusaur) has won out in the canon. I expect Green will stop being acknowledged.

I like more the version of Green in the manga, she has more personality and as a character is really good! Her interactions with Yellow, Blue and Red are cute and funny and I love her! Also her background story of her fear of birds and the bond with Silver is awesome. Sure Manga Green is the best female trainer!

Actually there is another ver of Green she's less know than her manga counterpart too. There's a ver of her in the pokemon craft dx which I'm pretty sure was published around the same time first volume of pokespe was. She looks kinda similar to manga green but has a white belt, her hair and shoes are also different anyways she's pretty cool and I think more people should talk about her even if she's only in a short craft book

Leaf is essentially what the video implied a character who just kinda existed with nothing to truly call her own. I look at her and just see a nice car with no interior, just something nice for display. I know plenty of people who are actually quite fond of Green especially when you consider Pokemon adventures is the best Pokemon has to offer on the narrative story telling side of things.

Nuance matters and we get the full extent of Greens experiences and her growth of being a mischievous, selfish, seductive, manipulative girl to a smart, crafty, loving person who cares deeply for her friends. The complete antithesis of her previous character, which is nice to see as she’s grown to look beyond herself. Leaf is just Leaf nothing about her is compelling of stands out in comparison to green. Mainly because she’s had no screen time in any other Pokémon media that’s conducive to develop anything worth mentioning of her character, her story is pretty much reds story, except Red far outclasses her in popularity and notoriety. Which is why she’s not in sun snd moon. She’s just always forgotten. So Red just overshadows her in the games. She’s just a game character and that hurts her in the end.
Green is far better not because of my opinions, but because she actually has growth and a compelling story from one of the best pieces of media Pokémon has to offer. Your character unfortunately has little to no substance, which is mainly the fault of gamefreak for not trying hard enough with her. I don’t dislike Leaf at all I think she’s cool and has a way better design then greens plain design, but she’s lacking in everything else.
It’s very clear your a hardcore Leaf stand that gets triggered over nothing. All I said is that I prefer Green, then you say she sucks out of nowhere showing you have a bias hatred for Green just because I prefer the character that’s more well fleshed out and is compelling. Man, imagine those 2 are actually sisters who didn't like each other. My hc is that whoever gets to red 1st often forced the other to avoid them and vice versa, giving red a bit of a problem that he doesn't wanna deal with without them escalating on each other.
I really dislike the naming of the 2 gen 1 rivals and how they are switched in the international releases. Since i read a translation of the adventures manga i always assosiate them with their japanese names, which is also what their designs takes after. It is so weird to see her being called green or leaf when in my head i look at her and thinks Blue.
Here is a funny fun fact for you. Originally in Japan they were going to release the Gen 1 games as Red & Blue, but decided to replace Blue with Green because they liked the design of Venusaur more than Blastoise. Retrospectively if that did happen, Green would have been know as Blue around the world including Japan, and Blue would have been known as Green as well. We would never have this name confusion, if Japan stuck with their original plan.

My first official Pokemon game was Let's Go! Since the switch was my only Nintendo related console. I was then first introduced to her as Green and as time went on, i see her in Pokemon Masters, known as Leaf and didn't think anything of it. I assumed it was the same character, just older. since names in games from Japan are kinda commonly switched around for overseas simplistic sake. But seeing the Evolutions episode and this video being recommended after it; this has been a real kick to reality. Thank you for highlighting this and I sure hope that they continue to give these (two?) Some continuous recognition, Since this seems like a existential crisis case. By elimination, i guess Leaf would have my vote since she's had the most media about her. While Green is kinda stuck in the past. 😢

Which would make Red having black hair rather than brown make more sense? Or is it possible for characters to be the same character but have design and name changes, and even have different Pokémon?
I'm leaning towards them all being counterparts of each other rather than two different people, Like how Red from Fire Red and Let's Go are just another universe counter parts of each other, and that any version of them is canon.

I would now really like to see Green and Leaf together in, for example the next Pokémon game.
Funnily enough in Fire emblem there's the protagonist of the 5th game is Leif (older translations literally calling him Leaf). Even more funny is that Altenna the sister of Leif, looks like Leaf but slightly older wearing armor and has a cool dragon/wyvern.

I base it solely off the game. Start fire red and look at the mother character for each character. They look the same, walk outside and realize it's the same house, then look at the fact they look exactly alike other than one is female.

Ikr Red's gen 1 and gen 3 designs are more different from each other than the female trainer's gen 1 and 3 designs, yet he's not considered a different character.
I don't understand why people aren't using the same logic for Green. It's not that deep.
Let's go timeline maybe in the anime timeline, it shown at the last scene that oak talk to someone in the phone that is likeably ash about the new pokemon in other region.

Elaine is a nice addition too! I've never thought of her as a Blue/Green(f) or Leaf counterpart, but she is a Gen 1 heroine technically so it makes sense to mention her I never thought of it at first lol
I also wonder how it would have been like to actually have Blue/Green(f) playable in the very first Gen 1 games. The manga would probably be the same. Maybe she would have appeared in FRLG like Lyra in HGSS... idk!
Andd because I love the manga so much I was really excited to see her team and some of her personality being inspired by the manga counterpart! Red, Green(m), and Blue(f) in Let's Go! are all probably referring more to the Sugimori artwork where Red has a Bulbasaur, Green(m) has a Charmander, and Blue(f) has a Squirtle, but the Manga was also inspired by the very same artwork so the Let's Go! and Manga counterparts having similarities and overlap in Pokemon teams make sense! Red and Green(m) from Let's Go! don't take personality inspo from their Manga counterparts, but Blue(f) seems to have some Manga inspiration in my eyes since she hasn't been an established character in the games until Masters gave Leaf some character. (I think Let's Go! Blue(f) would have gotten her personality from Leaf if she was given a role in FRLG alongside Red and Green(m) since they continue to use their personalities from the games and not the manga in Let's Go!) (But who knows? Maybe she would still be inspired by Manga Blue(f) along with some Leaf)
Still, it was a nice surprise to see her in a game finally :D and Masters is also a great way to see more of the heroine too!
And now, I will go back to thinking about Pokespe lmaoo

Elaine honestly does feel more like "girl Red" than anything closer to Leaf. Her aesthetics of course are much more modern and she's younger but otherwise it's closer to him.
Another thing is that in the japanese fandom they do sometimes also distinguish the OG Red with Fire Red, which maybe explains the awkward situation with Green and Leaf.
