They reworked the code for the Japanese blue release because the original source code for red/green was too fragmentary and unstable to continue being used for new games. Since international releases were after the Japanese blue release, they just went ahead and used the blue code instead of making a third set of code. Not because of any one specific glitch.

8:46 It’s the Pokedex glitch. Basically, if you don’t have a pokedex and have another pokemon in the list other than the starter, Professor Oak will think that you have the Pokedex and will not accept the parcel so you can’t progress. That’s why the sound effect appeared.
Holy shit, I think I actually got stuck because of that over 20 years ago the first time I played. I couldn't read in the language of the game so I kept killing pidgeys and rattatas and nidorans until I had a charmeleon and had no clue about the parcel thing. I think eventually someone told me what to do or I found it on the internet, but had to restart.
The "type advantage against the trainer" was just a throwaway joke, but give what I've seen recording part 2, we might actually be able to interact with enemy trainers in battle o_O
As the AVGN once said, "This game is an example where the ENTIRE *GAME* is a glitch!" That sums up Pokemon Red/Green very, VERY well, but it's a GOOD glitch. Glitches aren't always bad, and Missingno is proof of that.
The first one isn't exclusive to Red and Green, it's there in all Generation 1 games. ...There was oversight (fixed in Red and Blue) where if you evolved your starter before receiving Pokedex, the game would get confused and think you already have Pokedex, without moving the old man.

(In Red/Blue you can simulate Select glitch but Red/Green/Japanese Blue to an extent, just make powerful glitches trivially more easier, like with the dokokashira door glitch. They still had that SRAM glitch though/the infamous 'beat Pokémon Yellow in 0:00' one.)

To get the 1st one to work in Yellow, the girl needs to be two blocks up in the grass instead of one, since that's where the Pikachu-spawn trigger is located. The 1st one also will fail (in each version) if the girl walks away from the required spot before Oak starts taking you to his lab.
The way the "Fake characters" are generated is actually very simple. While the punctuation marks can only be placed onto t-, k-, s-, and h- characters, creating separate characters for da di de du do, ga, gi, ge, gu, go, za, ji, ze, zu, zo, ba, bi, be, bu, bo, and pa, pi, pe, pu, po would unnecessarily take up a lot of memory. Remember, Gen 1 has really tight memory constraints, mostly due to their poorly optimized code. The only difference between da and ta are the two small ticks above it. So, they just allowed you to enter a "ta" and add the ticks to it separately. That way everything I listed from da - bo is covered by the addition of a single character. Pa - po use a small circle instead. It's been a while since I've played Green version, but I think you can actually put these marks over any character yourself on the name input screen even though it doesn't actually make any sense to do so over any characters that aren't t-, k-, s-, or h- characters and the circle only makes sense over h- characters.

One of my favourite bugs in gaming is the W-Item glitch in Final Fantasy VII that allows super easy item duplication. The thing most don't know about this bug though is that in the original Japanese release this brain-dead easy glitch did the reverse and straight up eats the item.
That W-Item glitch is what taught me that "W" is the Japanese notation for "Double!" I'd always see W randomly on restaurant menus here in Japan and I had no idea what it meant until I watched some FF7 glitch content. I guess W does mean "Double U" so it makes sense, but I'd never realized it...

I figured something along those lines was happening...there's no new characters, just crazy accent marks. I can only imagine how wild things would get if kanji was actually in these games.
@@ImportedCheese yeah, instead of having separate graphics for the accented characters, the accents are programmed as characters themselves that appear above the previous character. That means they can appear over any character, even when that doesn't make sense. I think even numbers. This is why every string of text has an empty line above it.
@@ImportedCheese When those marks ゛called "dakuten" are put on characters that don't normally have them it's how people represent yelling, since they don't have capital and lowercase letters like English. When they're put on characters that do normally have them it changes the sound (t becomes d, h becomes b, etc.) キ=ki ギ=gi タ=ta ダ=da フシギダネ=fushigidane=bulbasaur
So funny that 2nd glitch that is NOT unique to Red/Green from Japan. That can also happen in the US copies of Red/Blue it just doesn't do the menu bit, instead it'll poof your sprite and then it just plays a single long tone effectively freezing the game.

I grew up with and love both series unconditionally. however, my first love will always be Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 on Gameboy. So much so that I was absolutely GUTTED when I learned there was a 3DS remake of Monsters 2 that never released internationally.
Trivia that may be funny to you, Omar: UA-camr Pikasprey once encountered a weird bug with Ditto... just randomly. And thing is: _That was an until then undiscovered bug._ Gen 1 is _so_ broken, people still find new bugs and glitches to this very day... and that's amazing for all the wrong reasons. xD
I had Pokémon Red in English but at somepoint in time my brother got me Japanese Green. Now I couldn’t speak or understand Japanese and as I kid I thought it was basically the same game, but now as an adult that I know so much not just glitches that were different about it I want to break it out and play it
I always likes it when people are using their actual learned abilities, such as being able to read a foreign language, into entertainment. :-D English is a foreign language for me, since I am from Denmark. But I also understands Chinese (not even close to fluently) but good enough for now, unfortunately. Just like learning to play an instrument at some point you hit the level where you are able to do what you want, and improvement is only to be professional, so most people stop at that point. But back to what I was saying. Thanks for a fun video.
Glitch 1 (The Pallet Town Patrol) also works in the western versions! I remember pulling it off as a kid (in either Red or Yellow, can't remember which one) after reading about it online 😆
Fun fact: In the Japanese versions of gen 1 you can actually use the PC potion without any pokemon in your party, though to no effect, but it's super cool to see that you can open the pokemon screen without save corruption.

The reason that Pokemon was rewritten from the ground up for international releases was actually because the code couldn't be translated from Japanese to other Languages without breaking the game. If there's more reasons, these glitches are probably it.

If you encounter a trainer while inside a wall, the game thinks all your pokemon have fainted and you will instantly blackout in any battle. Even if you heal at a center, it won't help.
Huh... So the urban legend I heard years back about player whose pokemon in Red or Blue never recovered, no matter how many times s/he tried with poke center heal, may have been either inspired by that 0 hp glitch or by a glitch similar to it... 🤔

I think even if you don't speak Japanese, it's interesting to see how different videos made for a Japanese audience are. There's a lot of text-to-speech, and due to how many homophones there are in Japanese there are often subtitles, even for native speakers who aren't hearing impaired in any way.

Wormy is adorable, I don't know what you're on about. I think the second glitch might also be possible in the overseas versions, but I think in parts 2 and 3 I go deeper into glitches that truly are Japan exclusive.
Brazillian here =) i vividly remember when i was a kid, we couldnt read either japanese or english, but pokemon was still huge cos of the animated series, AND tbh back then we didnt gave a crap about piracy, so for a long time the most played(emulated) pokemon game here in brazil was pokemon green =)
7:49 Pretty sure that's the Japanese equivelent to Cooltrainer, which is a name given to Move ID 00 which is usually just unselectable, but can be made a valid move with glitches, and the name comes from the move's Type in the English releases. Although, much like everything else in this, the move's more broken than in said English versions.

The resin oak appears outside is because when u go into the grass that is where the oak would spawn and tell you that you need a Pokémon, witch is why there’s a [!] above the players head, cause usually just like how trainer battles you can talk to the trainers to start a battle, starting a strand of code, oak does the same thing but repesents a walking trainer with a different strains of code, It’s sort of like a unskipable trainer, where it sees you wherever you are on the path, I’ll call this effect “line of sight” for know. the line of site is the npc detecting the player and playing a line of code that leads to a bunch of old generated code, (also known as a the [!] you see and the battle you do with a trainer far ranged trainer) but if you talk to the trainer, the game tells itself to skip some of the codes for the trainer walking and instead generate the line of text, this is what happens when you talk to oak, but instead of battling it takes you to his lab, Because just like trainers and how you can just talk to them, if you talk to prof oak it triggers the next code and skips the music and the control pause, and because you have not walked thru the grass without a Pokémon (witch the game will check) and you have triggered the scene for getting a Pokémon from oak, the game just makes a [!] and just stops cause it don’t know what to do next
Or the game could tell itself to stop because there is no battle sequence and there is no other code after it that the game can use it just exits the whole thing, cause that’s the end of that code, this could have probably have been a tester to test if the [!] worked, if it was not then the game probably would use extra data from other things and could have left to a crash or other stupid things to happen
When I was younger like maybe 4 - 6 I rember having a red or blue demo thing on my phone or at least that is what I can rember, I have fond memories of my one and only Pokemon, a Charmeleon, idk why it never evolved to charzard but it was strong, the only move I'd use with it was iron claw

I had Pokémon Red in English but at somepoint in time my brother got me Japanese Green. Now I couldn’t speak or understand Japanese and as I kid I thought it was basically the same game, but now as an adult that I know so much not just glitches that were different about it I want to break it out and play it

English is a foreign language for me, since I am from Denmark. But I also understands Chinese (not even close to fluently) but good enough for now, unfortunately. Just like learning to play an instrument at some point you hit the level where you are able to do what you want, and improvement is only to be professional, so most people stop at that point.

Glitch 1 (The Pallet Town Patrol) also works in the western versions! I remember pulling it off as a kid (in either Red or Yellow, can't remember which one) after reading about it online 😆

Fun fact: In the Japanese versions of gen 1 you can actually use the PC potion without any pokemon in your party, though to no effect, but it's super cool to see that you can open the pokemon screen without save corruption.

The reason that Pokemon was rewritten from the ground up for international releases was actually because the code couldn't be translated from Japanese to other Languages without breaking the game.
If there's more reasons, these glitches are probably it.

If you encounter a trainer while inside a wall, the game thinks all your pokemon have fainted and you will instantly blackout in any battle. Even if you heal at a center, it won't help.

@@ImportedCheese Yeah I checked out her channel. She seemed to have a ton of videos which was impressive but sadly I don't speak Japanese.
I think even if you don't speak Japanese, it's interesting to see how different videos made for a Japanese audience are. There's a lot of text-to-speech, and due to how many homophones there are in Japanese there are often subtitles, even for native speakers who aren't hearing impaired in any way.
SWSH blows this out of the water for glitches, they just do not care anymore.
It's so inspiring how they let blind people program the games.

Brazillian here =) i vividly remember when i was a kid, we couldnt read either japanese or english, but pokemon was still huge cos of the animated series, AND tbh back then we didnt gave a crap about piracy, so for a long time the most played(emulated) pokemon game here in brazil was pokemon green =)

Pretty sure that's the Japanese equivelent to Cooltrainer, which is a name given to Move ID 00 which is usually just unselectable, but can be made a valid move with glitches, and the name comes from the move's Type in the English releases. Although, much like everything else in this, the move's more broken than in said English versions.

The resin oak appears outside is because when u go into the grass that is where the oak would spawn and tell you that you need a Pokémon, witch is why there’s a [!] above the players head, cause usually just like how trainer battles you can talk to the trainers to start a battle, starting a strand of code, oak does the same thing but repesents a walking trainer with a different strains of code,
It’s sort of like a unskipable trainer, where it sees you wherever you are on the path, I’ll call this effect “line of sight” for know. the line of site is the npc detecting the player and playing a line of code that leads to a bunch of old generated code, (also known as a the [!] you see and the battle you do with a trainer far ranged trainer) but if you talk to the trainer, the game tells itself to skip some of the codes for the trainer walking and instead generate the line of text, this is what happens when you talk to oak, but instead of battling it takes you to his lab,
Because just like trainers and how you can just talk to them, if you talk to prof oak it triggers the next code and skips the music and the control pause, and because you have not walked thru the grass without a Pokémon (witch the game will check) and you have triggered the scene for getting a Pokémon from oak, the game just makes a [!] and just stops cause it don’t know what to do next
I cannot confirm this but this is the opinion I highly think is true
Or the game could tell itself to stop because there is no battle sequence and there is no other code after it that the game can use it just exits the whole thing, cause that’s the end of that code, this could have probably have been a tester to test if the [!] worked, if it was not then the game probably would use extra data from other things and could have left to a crash or other stupid things to happen

Kanto is honestly a terrifying region. Everything is poisonous 😂😂 even the insects. And my personal opinion. Charizard is over rated and venasaur is the best kanto starter. Lol
