I watched a ton of tournament footage when ult came out and realized their shields were coming out way faster than mine and they were always angled forward. Went to training mode and had an epiphany that the run animation can be cancelled into shield if you hit shield while running instead of setting the stick back to neutral. Changed my life
I played for so long wondering what was wrong with my shield when I watch pros. No one else could explain this in my region for some reason. Thank you!

Love this series of videos about the tech in Ultimate (like Lagless Landing and Dashing). They're super informative, clean, and easy to understand even for a casual like me. These deserve way more attention and I hope you're able to make more!
Only 2 videos I've watched of yours and my gameplay is significantly improved. I never find videos like this that really go into all the wierd lil tidbits about competitive play. Love it. Thanks for everything.
I'm surprised no one has asked the natural question: Why do you have to hold the control stick? The reason is that you have to be running (or about to run) to shield. When you hold forward and hold shield, what actually happens is that on the frame that your dash would normally transition into run, your character will shield. Here's the takeaway: whenever you want to quickly move and shield, tell yourself to *run* and shield, and you'll never mess it up.
@@davidecimino7112 You're pressing shield too quickly. There's a brief window at the start of your dash where pressing shield will activate a roll. The fastest dash shields in the game are frame 8 if memory serves, so you don't need to press shield very quickly.
Void coming in again with the simple yet amazing tip I never thought of! Watching tournaments I'd notice how fast shields came up and just thought mine was slow due to wifi lag 😅😅. Now I know it was me all along.
when you dash shield your shield come out at frame 8, if you do a dash THEN shield your shield come out at frame 14 means that dash shield is 6 frames faster. also thx gsmVoiD for showing me that this tech was a thing
For real. There was an article I read recently online on this super rare mechanic that people supposedly didn't know. All it was, was linking shooting 2 arrows after picking up one. I told myself I actually knew that already but definitely forgot about it for awhile, I just thought it was funny how people love to claim credit for something that was revealed on the dawn of ultimate.
Low key this was explained in the tutorials Sakurai gave in the beginning of ultimate. Good refresher for those new or those who missed the initial presentations
Thank you so much. The fact that I main a slow character makes this information critical for me. I struggled closing the gap on range zoners & I believe this will help me. Again, thank you.
If this one simple thing turns out to be as gamechanging as I'm expecting it to be, I will proceed to thank you, give you a handshake and a free sub of your choice once I become a top player. Thank you.
I've played the game since release and only found out about this like a month or two ago LOL it makes such a huge difference, I'm surprised I haven't seen it elsewhere beforehand
I love videos like these, since it really helps motivate me to learn something. I knew about the optimal method before, but I didn't realize how much of a difference it made, so I never tried it.
yep I realized I was doing this wrong back in Smash4 , iirc it looked even more obvious back then so I learned how to dash shield correctly then and carried over to Ult
I've never not done this, I wasn't even aware I was doing something right, I'm by no means a tournament ready player. Perhaps it's because ultimate isn't my first smash game. Ultimate has these insanely long initial dashes that would encourage this tap forward on the stick instead of holding it, but smash 4 for example doesn't have this, so I always hold forward when I want to run, and interrupt it with a shield, jump or whatever.
Surprised at how many people in the comments didn’t know the difference between these two dash shielding techniques. I guess you have to play a lot to assimilate and incorporate the right one into your gameplay. Took me a while to do it myself consistently and it drastically improves my gameplay as a whole. Very informative video
I knew about this but it's definitely useful for those who didn't, and a good reminder to those who already did. VoiD with the knowledge bombs (as always)
@@Seba20901 Because in Ultimate you cannot shield during your initial dash, only when it ends/once you transition into run. Most characters have an initial dash of 10 frames. Sheik and Corrin have an initial dash of 7 frames so they can do it earlier. Robin has the longest duration at 16 frames.
I remember a friend pointing out I was doing this wrong in smash 4 like 2 years into the game, I was so mad cuz the ground game immediately became much better lol

But if you dashwalk you can too, but it takes way more practice to pull of on a viable way.

Think I was already doing this and just didn't realize it. Good tip to know though so I am more aware of it.
Yeah instinctively hitting shield in the middle of dash worked well so I keep doing it but not very intentionally xD
Sheik and corrin have the fast dash shield so it’s super important for them
