The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This is such a kick ass song! They had so many! Kicks, Hungry, Good Thing, etc! Put them in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!!!
I think because they never did concerts. Only tv appearances and dick Clark
@@petersclafani4370 But it’s clearly the contributions to rock and roll music that gets you into the RnR HOF.
@@JohnnyAngel907 not true. There are payoffs. Ass kissing .
@@petersclafani4370I saw them live in 1969 in Springfield MO. It was a great show. Lots of fun. Original line up with Mark Lindsay.
Thanks for sharing this video. Paul Revere and the Raiders deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!❤
Absolutely!!
Yes for sure, I'm hitting 60 and I'd love to see them finally get in before I kick the bucket.
They are too good for those Pinheads ( H O F)
My top three artists overlooked for the R&RHOF: Jethro Tull, Three Dog Night, Paul Revere and the Raiders
Im a young buck (19 years old) and I have to say this is one of the best underrated bands of the mid century.
Yes. Very cool
Me too, I'm a teenager in the 2020s yet I love old rock and roll music.
In the same boat as you. I'm a young 22-year-old whippersnapper but Paul Revere & the Raiders are my favorite band. They made some of the best albums of the late 60s.
if not one of the most underrated bands of all time
That and what I like to call "the band the world forgot" the Dave Clark Five
Glad you are enjoying this great music !! You have good tastes. I was 12 when this song came and loved it from the very beginning.
Paul Revere and the raiders for one of the best bands to come out of the 60s and I don't care what anybody says
I was a sophomore in HS when PR & the Raiders first debuted. They were hotter than the Beatles for a very short time, but they were great!
Drake Levin left the group in '66 but rejoined the band on guitar to finish the spring 1967 tour. Levin, Volk, and Smith flew to New York together when the Raiders were booked to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Revere was upset about Valley, Volk, and Smith leaving the group, blaming Levin for their departures. Levin showed up at the Ed Sullivan Theater to perform with Volk and Smith for the very last time, but Revere refused to allow Levin to play. Unbeknownst to the group, Revere had hired a new guitar player, Freddy Weller, to perform that night. Levin held no grudges about this; he showed Weller the chords to the songs and watched from the wings as the Raiders made their one and only appearance on Sullivan's show on April 30, 1967. It was the only time that the lineup of Revere, Lindsay, Smith, Volk, and Weller performed together.
I think you are referring to Harpo Jim Valley
Leven had not been in the band since 66 and Jim Harpo Valley took over and he was on at least two or three subsequent albums
and they didnt even play on the recording. drummer Hal Blaine along with his co-hort of musicans from the WRECKING CREW played on this as they had been recording the Raiders as early as 66.
@@recordguy4321Mark Lindsay had maintained that the wrecking crew were indeed on the recordings but they only augmented the sound, and did not replace the original guitar bass drum set up of the group and they actually were performing on the album
They made the most of their sole Sullivan appearance. 😊
So very cool to know that this would be the first time most people would hear this great song as it was just released at the time of this show. One of many stellar songs from their legendary "Revolution" album.
Fantastic album front to back!
From the only episode of the Sullivan show on which Paul Revere and the Raiders appeared. They performed in three separate portions of the show. In the first segment, they sang "Good Thing" and "Ups and Downs". This video is the second segment in which they sang "Him or Me - What's it Gonna Be?" (which charted at 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the group). During the final segment later in the episode, they sang "Kicks".
"Kicks" and "Cherokee People" were their two best for me.
Thanks for the elaboration. The Raiders were one of my favorites growing up in the 60s . Unfortunately, I missed them on Ed Sullivan. So glad we have You Tube!
@@johnlopez7529 You're welcome!
Lip Synched of course, but very good!
@@robertcartwright563No, it was a live performance in spite of the absence of any amplifiers on the stage.
The sound level of Mark’s voice wavered as he moves his mike around. He was focusing more on his dance moves because, in addition to adding to his wild appeal, it was also how he kept time with the music.
Drake went savage on the drums, hitting even the cymbals. During a mimed performance, the drummer avoids the cymbals, which unlike the rest of the drum set, cannot be muted (usually with pillows stuffed inside each drum).
The stories I could tell just by what Fang told me but I'm not at liberty to say. Fang should write a book.
As I said before, please beg him to write a book!
I am binge watching this. Mark is incredible as a front man. Mick's got nuthin' on him.
Not on Sullivan, mostly with Dick Clark, these guys put on a comedy act during thier performances. Very fun group ! Seen them several times and talked to Paul Revere a few times. Nice guy...Rest in Peace
The drummer is really hitting the drums. Usually the drummer would pretend to hit them because drums were loud and could be heard over the pre-recorded track. Vocals were live. Ed Sullivan always demanded a live performance, or at least live vocals.
I didn't know that about the Ed Sullivan show, interesting. I know Shindig! did a similar process; live vocals recorded over a recorded music track (with the music track recorded live at dress rehearsal).
You're absolutely right!
I remember rushing home after school to watch "Where The Action Is". Anyone else? Good times.
Oh yeah. And my parents weren’t happy.
Oh yeah... I watched that all the time. Even though it was lip synced it was a great show. I loved it!
Yes, as a young preteen rushing home from school mainly to see Mark Lindsay, and also watching Dark Shadows.
@@Gipsymom Oh yeah, Dark Shadows 👍
Yes❤
The Raiders were one of the best groups to come out of the '60s.
RIP Mike "Smitty" Smith and Paul Revere! 💐
And Drake Levin
The most underrated band of all time, no?
Cool. Despite the vocal mix and the media mimed performance i am still very happy this clip exists. Love PR&TR.
Has to be one of the best damn Rock n Rol bands ever. My favorite Raiders song. Pure atomic energy and excitement.
I saw videos of the song where Sullivan looks visibly upset going “come on!!” As if the band wasn’t playing quick enough for him
He was probably on his last nerve trying to get these hippy's to cooperate. Look at all the group's who had dissed him(The Doors,The Rolling Stones, etc.) and he was at his breaking point.
That's from the third segment. They were running behind and it wasn't the band's fault, it was whoever was running the playback machine. He'd missed his cue, so the band was standing around waiting for their cue, and Ed got a little ahead of himself, thinking the band was going to play the last bit live. I believe that was the original intention, but since they were running behind, they decided to do the last segment to playback.
@@markberryhill2715Paul revere and the raiders were far from hippies. They were a professionally tuned band that’s been playing since the early 60s
@@michaelrochester48 yes! I was a big fan as a little boy, but don't remember the clean cut image part. I always thought they were "rebels" because of "Indian Reservation" lol
@@michaelrochester48 To the older “straight” generation, any young man with long hair was considered a hippie. We all looked the same to them.😎🎸✌️☮️
WOW...Dig that mid 60's SUNBURST Double neck Gibson EDS-1275...I've seen the Cherry and White ones, but never a sunburst(or black for that matter) though they were available in the catalog. As rare as it can get now.
Yeah, never saw a sunburst finish on a double-neck or very many single neck Gibson SG for that matter. I had a walnut finished one long time ago.
Yeah, wow indeed. I was watching a clip here of a compilation of Jimmy Page talking about his guitars, and one was talking about his dual neck Gibson, for Stairway in 1970, so he could play the acoustic intro and 12 string lead....lo and behold, the Raiders boys were doing it in '67, when he just joined the Yardbirds. I reckon Jimmy would be tickled pink to see this clip, probably had no idea the Americans were doing it. He also talked about the great Peter Green sound too, first time I ever heard him mention in such greatness, by a greatness! 😄
These guys were GREAT!!! Absolute 1960s American Rock and Roll!!! I saw them in concert 3 times over the years and the concerts were terrific!!
I love how Smitty (the drummer) jokes around with the fact that the band is all miming to the studio track by hitting *the air* to imitate the tambourine at 0:42. Seems like some Keith Moon shenanigans😅
Mark Lindsay seems to be bursting with energy; his vocals are 100% live
I'm surprised the Bassist and Guitarist didn't do more of their antics, as they do in their other TV appearances.
@@259Den3 If I remember correctly, this was actually Freddy Weller’s (guitarist) first performance with the band. He was hired by Paul Revere to replace Drake Levin. Phil “Fang” Volk, the bassist was on the verge of quitting the band and considering the fact that Weller likely didn’t know any of the choreography, Volk didn’t bother doing his typical dance moves.
@@dylancameron803Also to note that Drake was supposed to play with the rest of the band but Paul had hired Freddy anyway. Fang, Drake, and Smitty left to form Brotherhood, they recorded two very good albums worth a listen.
@@dylancameron803 That's precisely why it didn't happen. Nonetheless, if you look at Fang closely, he instinctively goes into his dance moves sorta wishing his dancing partner was joining him.
One of the 1st rock bands I listened to as a kid, I liked watching them on Where the Action Is also good times!
Same here. I freaking loved them as a young kid and didn't know why and now I live on the Cherokee village where I used to hear one of their best songs - "Cherokee People" love it!
A great show. I think that helped get me into rock music.
I saw them in 2001 at the opening of the Experience Music Project with a bunch of Pacific Northwest Legends. I was surprised to find out that they were one of my favorites of the weekend.
Not known here in Australia. For US fans only.
Mark Lindsay had a hit Arizona here in 1969.
Sadly, they are almost unknown in Europe. Some may remember 'Let Me', which was a Top 40 hit in West Germany.
Don Fardon's version of 'Indian Reservation' (written by John D. Loudermilk) peaked at no. 3 in the UK in November 1970.
In the US, the Raiders' version even reached the top a few months later. This was probably their biggest hit, though my favourite is 'Kicks'.
FINALLY this channel decides to upload this!!.....better late than never, I suppose......I'm very pleased they are going to put up the best segment of their extended appearance, but hopefully they will eventually release the other songs too.
It's due to an embarrassment of riches. They literally have too much to choose from(as you probably know) and too many folks to try to satisfy.
I think Mark Lindsey in the only one "plugged in", lol! Great performance nonethless!
I think some of the instruments were live based on the way they ended the performance.
@@stephenparry981 No, they spliced that ending on.
One of my favorite Raiders songs. Very poppy and up-tempo with simple but effective predomonant bass guitar.
I found some of their music on Spotify and loaded some of their songs onto a playlist with other 60's and 70's music. Sounds so good.
Thanks, and thank you to Terry Melcher!
This was their best song
Why are they not in the Hall Of Fame ?
Rock and roll HOF!!!!
I really like this recording. It seems that at minimum Marks vocals are live, and probably the drums too. The rest of the instruments are hard to tell with the jumping camera angles. Possible live on top of a backing track?

Revere and the Raiders!
What, are you kidding me!
One of the Best Pop Rock groups ever!
A very talented band that didn't start to really shine until 1966's The Spirit of '67. Not a bad song on that one. Everything before that was pretty much hit or miss. Their greatest hits album was the first rock album I bought - with a handful of change I'd saved up - so they will always be huge in my little old heart.
Good stuff. I see a bit of a Mick Jagger influence on Mark’s style.
Mark Lindsay was a great Jaggeresque front-man and a terrific singer. I wish the vocals on this clip were louder 'cause it sounds like they are dead=on with the backing parts. Despite the gimmicky costumes The Raiders made some great records.
Their TV show was very funny. And their coordinated dance steps, along with the costumes, great musicianship, and top-notch songwriting made for some big entertainment.
The instrumental backing is straight from the studio track. The Ed Sullivan sound engineers just added more reverb to give a “live” impression
@@dylancameron803 you got it
@@dylancameron803 dunno---the ending is much different than the released version.
@@mcashnv with the ending, it sounds like the ed sullivan engineers borrowed the master tapes of the song (since according to Tommy James, they liked to tweak them around to make the studio tracks sound more “live” when lip-synching/miming was involved) and directly spliced those sudden notes at the end to give it a conclusion. The new “ending” is quite sudden and doesn’t feel natural. The original song of course just slowly fades away, so there is no true ending.
Regardless, having heard the original song so many times, it becomes quite apparent that the instrumental backing here is directly lifted from the studio version.
Freakin' awesome. These guys were just so talented. They would appear on TV late afternoons on a show called Where the Action Is and always brought the goods. Anyway, energy here is off the hook. And this was an AM radio hit. Mark Lindsay is generally a very underappreciated singer. Guy is just a fab vocalist. Sounds like a hybrid with Mark really singing to a backing track. TV shows in the 60s were not set up to play live rock bands properly although you would see it from time to time. Special shout out for Drake Levin the guitarist as he was one of the best players of the time. Thanks for the post.
Im 66, it's crazy watching my childhood heroes on Y.T. what a great time to grow up. WTF do kids look at now?
Legendary group who had so many classic hits (this one reached #5 in June, 1967) Mark Lindsay and the boys really could rock.
Unlike other videos this one does not filter out the crowd noise and thus makes it more realistic.
That's because The Ed Sullivan show was live.
Mark Lindsay was singing live, also.

Great song. My first time hearing it. And I think some of those in the audience "appreciated" the guys wearing white tights.
What do you mean?
Various comments suggest only Mark was playing/singing live, but to me the drummer seems live. Either that or he was exactly on the mark for his drum breaks. Fantastic band however you look at them. The outfits may seem a tad silly in retrospect, but those were the days.
You can see around the 0:57 mark that Smitty tries to mime the heavy buildup of the drums but appears to pull out before that loud build up ends. Also you can hear a tambourine and shaker in the background (which are present in the studio track) yet none of the members are playing them.
@@ahappynigerian Good catch mate. I was so impressed by his going-in on it but yeah, he does pull out. He almost pulled it off!
@@SingleMalt77005 It looks like Smitty pulled out a tad early in order to better syncronizethe cymbal crash (which he nails perfectly!). However, another little quirk that I just noticed is that Smitty crashes the other cymbal around 1:01 yet there is absolutely no sound.
*Edit* Another quirk that I just noticed that gives away the band's miming is in the guitar intro. If you may have noticed from the studio track, the intro actually features two guitar lines playing simultaneously before the drums/band kick in. Freddy Weller here opts to mime the higher-pitched guitar line (and some phantom is "magically" playing the other guitar part in the background).
I always appreciated the whole colonial costume aesthetic; repelling the British invasion!
Cool to see Fang on bass with this song. Charlie is on the cover of the Revolution album from where the song is on.
This was fun. I just wish Mark's mic was turned up louder. 😊
This was great! I have this song on CD 💿 & love it! Thank you for sharing this, God Bless You & stay safe.
Excellent. They are great musicians. This live performance proves it. We are so use to see them lip sync that when they play live, we have to step back with acknowledgement
The only think live here are Mark's vocals and the "sha la la's". They're instruments arent even plugged in. But the Raiders were in fact great musicians.
Yeah, live vocals, original, recorded backing track. And, the award for worst mic technique goes to.......(lol)
I wonder if they played live on top of a backing track
If you are old (like me) and dont remember Paul & Raiders doing this song when it first came out you thought it was the Monkees.
Some folks also aren't aware Paul Revere had an earlier version of "Steppin' Stone", although the Monkees version is more widely known.
I saw them , live in Sacramento. The weee awesome
Loved these guys back in the day. I recall being at a friend's house and we played the 'Mr. Sun Mr. Moon' 45 until is was worn out.
I've played 'Him Or Me' to a couple of my younger friends and they all instantly liked this song. What can I say? A good tune is a good tune no matter what century you play it.

Weren’t they wonderful?! And Mark was so handsome - I had pictures of him from Sixteen magazine on my walls along with Paul McCartney, Peter Noone and Mike Nesmith. It was a nice, innocent time to grow up. And I still know the lyrics to all their songs!

The audio mix is not good.
somehow I think this could have been from the night before rehearsal that all the acts did. Notice when Smitty the drummer does a cymbal crash you cant hear it . somehow they silenced it out because it's all lip synched Other times he matches up to the cymbal crashes. They should have let them play live. they were all good musicians.
@@recordguy4321 Despite it's reputation, Ed Sullivan had a lot of soundtracks, especially in the latter years. Usually, a pre-recorded track will sound good, just by the ability to have multiple takes and get the technical stuff right. It's kind of the whole point! So what went wrong here?
@@MostlyBrenda not exactly sure, my guess was they were possibly on the road touring, and leader Paul, decided not to go live, but I'm surprised that Mark Lindsay didnt do a live vocal over the track. Just a guess.Even the stones lip synched on their last appearance.

You are wrong. The Monkees, especially Mike Nesmith, wrote plenty of their own songs. Also played instruments starting with 3rd album Headquarters.
