The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Drummer was Dino Danelli. Sadly he passed away in January 2023. Very underrated for sure!
underrated?????????? everyone in the mid to late 60's knew how great Dino was, You must be awful young
Actually he passed away on December 15th, 2022.😞💐
Yes, rock ‘n’ roll he was definitely one of the best drummers🙏🙏🙏💰💰💰🎤🎤🎤
Coolest cat behind a drum set that I ever saw. Got to see The Young Rascals once at The PHONE BOOTH nightclub in NYC. Great live band.
Not underrated in my house !
Thank goodness we’ve got the ability to save these gems of music.
They don't make this kind of bands any more. Great songs. Impeccable musicians. Great voices and awesome drumming.
in 67 I was 17, played drums in a band and had 2 other good friends that also played drums, when we saw Dino Dannelli we went nuts! He was so strong, he sat low, he had those pink champagne Ludwig's with the 24"base, he had sticks flashing all over the place, just Spectacular
You and I are the same age. I saw them when I was 16 in 1966 when they toured with Dick Clark's "Where the Action Is" and then again in 1970. I had started playing drums in 1966 and was in a garage band at the time. I continue to play drums today with my "copper sparkle" Gretsch which are the same color. After high school, I took professional jazz lessons and my playing expanded to jazz, American Standards, Motown, Soft Rock and Classic Rock and always, lower volume with finesse. Nothing against what I played then because if I hadn't gotten the bug - particularly by Dino Danelli - I wouldn't have continued to play.
Rest in peace, Dino. What an inspiration!
DRUMMER IS KILLING IT...
One of the truly great American bands of the mid sixties early seventies. Dino Danelli was a tremendous powerhouse drummer. He propelled that band and had mesmerizing technique. Hard to take your eyes off of him when he’d take a solo. May he rest in peace.
First drummer I ever saw twirl sticks while playing.
R.I.P Dino Danelli😞🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🎼🥁
My personal Best Rock group of the 60’s
Wow. Drummer is outta sight!!
If you notice, there is no bass player. The super talented Felix is not only singing the song he wrote but playing the Hammond B-3 organ left and right hand along with the bass pedals with both feet adjusting the volume as well...let me see someone in today's music do half of these things!
Felix was and is a multi-talented guy. Singer, songwriter, organist. His vocals are still amazing at 80 years old.
Today's music relies on computers not talent like we saw from artists then.
Ray Manzarek did the same thing for the DOORS.
You are absolutely right, great talent, Master Musicians
Should have replaced the useless tambo player with a decent bass player.
Love that they played live, no lip synching. Just a live performance!
Cute drummer ....damn
@@user-ch9iz2os7wJanet, thats Dino Danelli who passed Jan 2023. A bad boy on those drums
Favorite band of that time. Loved it when they appeared on Ed Sullivan. Felix was a master.
"DINO RULES" I was a kid when they hit it big, I had a older cousin who fancied himself a drummer. He was nuts over these guys, now I understand why. I always liked their music but now that I see the videos 50+ years later I understand.
This is a great clip. Not only was it truly live and not lip-synced, but the TV director actually knew what he was doing with the shots. And for you kids out there...I was 9 years old when this happened, and you have no idea what it was like to grow up with music like this. Great music, all of the time, new and fresh. I can only image what it was like to be 19. I feel bad you missed out.
I was 9 also, living in Lodi, NJ when they rented an abandoned store across the street from my house and rehearsed for a whole week.🤯
Well the director missed off the shots of the amazing lead guitar sound at beginning of second song, so I don’t think director knew what he was doing
What year was this? I remember them as they were one of my favorite groups! Felix Papalardi (?). This, "Good Lovin", "A Beautiful Morning", "How Can I Be Sure?", "Groovin'", "A Girl Like You", etc.! If it was '67, which I think it was, I was 9 also until Sept.6.!
Mistake! Lead singer/organ player was Felix Cavaliere, not Papalardi. My bad!
I fear that it is no longer easy for young people to understand what new and fresh music means, when much of the music they consume is repeated, pre-recorded and canned..., which is why most of today's stars and bands sound very different live compared to its studio recording...
They were really hot when I was a kid! Sad that the drummer passed away!
Dino Danelli in the engine room!
Dino--Major talent, showmanship, and rockstar gorgeous ❤❤
RIH legend.
Dino was the model for every rock drummer that followed him. And so what if the camera was on everybody BUT Gene Cornish during his solo. 🤣
Their Time Peace LP was my favorit.
Jazz backgound Dino was a fantastic drummer. R.I.P.
As good as these guys are to me they are underrated one of the best American bands ever. Met Felix prior to a casino concert in Ontario Canada we had a nice long chat incredible song writer and singer modest humble great talented guy as is the rest of the band sad hearing about Dino one of the best rock and roll drummers passing away.. Rascals. Thanks for the memories priceless,
That drummer was AMAZING!!!❤
Passed away recently unfortunately.
@@FrankinDallashe is also holding the sticks the old fashioned way. RIP He is in Rock and Roll heaven!!!
Dino Danelli. Amazing drummer. 😊
He became a recluse near the end..i heard..sad….
My grandmother blew the drummer after a show and nine months later my mother was born. Hawt think about that.
Dino with that great style and energy. He left us with great grooves galore. RIP Paisan.
Dino is my Favorite drummer of all time.❤
Wow. Amazing performance. True talent carries the day. Drummer is too cool for words.
When music was music. The good ole days
They were such a great group. All the special memories!❤
Their attitude from beginning to end of this video is they are just having fun! They aren't trying to cop an attitude or anything else. They are living in the moment. I've seen them twice and they were pure joy. Great music and personalities.
Mr. Cavalieri, just by having created that authentic wonder that is Groovin', has already earned my eternal devotion.
Super tight and out of sight.❤💢💢💢💯
I want lovers of today's music scene to study this performance! Completely LIVE. Four guys up there cookin' and settin' the world on fire! This was when musicianship was paramount and really mattered to achieve success. To all you lightweight lovers of the current scene...Dino Danelli rules!!!!
Dino was was so far ahead in showmanship for drummers and far too underated the band itself was soulful rocking and funky.
Dino knocking them dead with his powerhouse drumming!
I love the little smile Dino does when the camera pans to him...RIP 🌹
DINO!!!!!! greatest drummer ever! RIP,
badass band! 1 of the greatest r&b rockers ever!
"The Rascals touched off an explosion. Suddenly every group east of the East River was telling their drummer to twirl the sticks, their guitarist to get a big, fat Gretsch..." Lenny Kaye, "East Coast Rock," Creem
My brother got this album rught before he was drafted into Vietnam. As an 8yo I i had THE BEST vinyl album collection. I knew all these songs. It was good music. Favorite era
The Young Rascals three first albums are all amazing
Great suit Dino
People really don't understand what rock and roll did!
It was the dividing line in music history. No one there cared about any music prior to it. It's still the first real world music, and today every teen still is fascinated by some form of it.
Here's what I said, and nobody seemed to really get it! Physics 8s easier to explain .
Ed Sullivan was a genius!!! He had all the best on his show!!!
This group is great...The Drummer is fabulous...
Yeah, he was really into it . . . highly entertaining.
Still lLove the keyboard music, the upbeat, energetic melody, and the lead singer's voice in 2023.
Dino was the best. ❤
Great song that's true we don't have rock and roll bands like we did in the 1960's
Paul McCartney on drums is priceless. LOL
Yeah, Dino Danelli, the Italian McCartney.
Dino was for sure a Butt kicking Drummer. One of the 1st Drummers to play an off-beat Bass Beat. He could play RINGS AROUND RINGO!
The guy with the tambourine is the whole band.
You're kidding?
I have never seen a performer with double tambourines!
Yes, somehow no one else ever thought of that, and his dance moves are unmatched as well.
Snappy drummer!
Great drumer
Great live performance there! They were rocking! 😎
His name is Dino Danelli!
Love the Young Rascals they were one of the best. What memories!!! RIP Dino
Dino great drummer, sadly passed in 2022.
They were among the best, the could write great songs but they didn't last long. In the early 70s they were all but gone.
Eddie Brigatti left the group in 70 so that put the writing on the wall.
@@nelsonperez5289 I really don't know why but I always confused them with the "Loving Spoonful". Yes both faded in the 70s.
@@catholiccowboy8545 I'm from NJ so I followed The Rascals. They played some hard soufull R & B riffs without a bass player.
@@nelsonperez5289 .. I'm from Montreal and i approve your quote. Yes they were into R & B since the beginning but they quickly changed at the end of the 60s. It killed them!
they're all great, but the drummer seems to be on fire 😀
Entertaining for sure
One of my favorite 60's Groups!!!!Great Performance.
I remember watching this with Janice when my dad got home from jail. They always pick of the Italians
RIP Dino. Great drummer; reminds me of another great drummer, Gene Krupa.
What a time for MUSIC!!!!
Rascals had the same instrument line up as the Doors : drums, keyboard, guitar. While it sounds OK the lack of a bass guitar is glaring. They play with great energy plus they didn't lip sync is even better.
Iam from lodi lived near Joey dee the rascal played in his garage awesome time for great music
I'm reminded of Buddy Rich every time I see a video of Dino Danelli playing.
While Buddy Rich was superior in his technical skills, he always sounded like a machine gun to me. I would much rather listen to Dino than Buddy any day. I'm a drummer who started back then and I can see and hear things by other drummers that a lot of people can't. Dino had much more soul than Buddy. I saw Dino and the rest of the band in 1966 and in 1970 and still smile when I think of them.
Rest in peace, Dino.
that drummer was a natural like K. Moon
They were friends.
Super drummer!
The Rascals were a great band that was very successful on both the pop and r&b charts.
Felix should be remembered as one of the best singer/songwriters ever.. sadly he remains underrated.
"A beautiful morning" is still one of my all-time favorites.
Totally agree I even told him that in person when we met prior to a Casino concert in Ontario Canada few years back he looked confused on my comment. Great lovely guy made a big favorable impression on me we chatted for about 15 mins Underrated song writer and lead singer big time super star in my books
Dino learned his twirling from his sister, who was a cheerleader.
One of the many groups that were/are better than most out there today.
Reminds me when i was a young girl who was happy and carefree with great music
Had an older sister who really liked this group back in high school. Now passed. Great memories. Thanks, Ed.
I saw Dino slam his drumstick on his floor tom, up it went and down it came into his hand without missing a beat. I was 12. Sixty years ago. I will never forget that moment. American Bandstand.
Damn he played the hell out of those drums loved him loved him
My brother saw them play at MDJC, Miami "67 (i was 6 yrs old). Many years later, when I started getting into playing music, he led me the best bands best in his day. And, the Rascals were on the list. Thirty years later, late 90's, we saw them play at the Lyric theater in Stuart. They were fantastic. So many smiles in the audience, listening to the songs of their lives.
Magnificent Masterpiece from Master Musicians, fan for 60 years, fellow paisines, 100% Italian
The cameraman blew it by not featuring Gene during his (rare) guitar solo! By mistake or on purpose? Great song, band and video!!
Dino looks like Paul McCartney from the early Beatles years Lol😂. Would've loved to see Dino and Ringo do a drum battle! That would've been awesome,R.I.P Dino your drumming and drum stick twirling was absolutely flawless!
Felix was such a giant of a singer and songwriter. I don't think he gets his due. Dino too.
This is actually the medley of "I've Been Lonely Too Long"/"Slow Down" and later on the same telecast the "Mickey's Monkey"/"Turn On Your Lovelight" medley. Both great performances.
"Slow Down"? The second song is "Come On Up"
A great performance by the Rascals. A great band who are overlooked at times by their contribution to music.
That's YOUNG Rascals, George, please.
@@dhutton77I almost went with Young but looking at their drum set it only said Rascals which I believe the name change came about late 1967 early 1968.
Understood. It just fries me that they had to change the name because they were sued by another band (I believe also from Long Island) that had the same name first, and that no one has ever heard of since. @@georgemusic4all4seasons
Clearly shows what a great talented Drummer Dino was.
Everyone gives credit to Ginger, Keith, Mitch but Dino should be up there as one of the greatest drummers in rock.
I think the greatest technical rock drummers of the time were Danny Seraphine and Jon Bonham, but Dino was the one I really loved to watch!
LIVE!
What a goddamn drummer. Holy shit!
Dino had impeccable timing.
What a great band! Lots of good songs from them!
Fabulous performance! Love the trippy lighting! So much energy here, from Felix's soulful singing, to Eddie's choreographic twin tambourines and backup singing, to Gene's excited guitar playing , to the late Dino's impressive conquest of the drums! The Rascals could be mellow, but boy could they rock. I had the privilege of seeing their Broadway show several years back. They were still every bit as good as on this recording.
Dino was "The Man!" I've been drumming since 1966. And Dino never ceases to amaze me!
What a great showman!
Me too, hey he was a major influence for me. I tried to spin my sticks like that for years, but dropped them every time.
@@pjreynoldsa1 Ha-ha-ha! Thanx 4 sharing that, pal. My son, who's 30 years old, can do it. I've never really been interested enough to give it a serious try. Go figure! My "batting average" flipping sticks (throwing them in the air and catching them) is in the area of .500. And no way can I flip with my left hand. I find that impossible! Heck, I haven't played my drums for months. Take care, bud!
The memories
Oh the music we had. Lucky bastages
A time lost to history. My youth
Super talent
Outstanding live performance!!!!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Another Great Group from the 60,s !!! Just FABULOUS !!!!!!
Very very awsome band
I LOVED Dino Danelli. His movements were truly unique and "one of a kind." I just can't imagine the the Rascals without him. RIP.
Dino is my favorite drummer of all time❤
Groovy haircuts man❤😊
One of my all time favorite bands of the 60's Dino was the man!
Comprei um box deles com 5 Cds , sensacional !
Dino - America's answer to Keith Moon.
DINO!! Love ya' brother!!!
Man! What a band!
Love these guys. Cheers.
Wow!!
