I was going to recommend a Volvo 240 or 740 when you started talking about rear wheel drive cars, and then you go and do it for me! Like you said, they are extremely capable cars, and built like absolute tanks. I wager that close to 98% of all drivers here in Sweden start out in a Volvo, if not more. Of course it is much more common over here, but it is still a great car for any beginner wishing to try rear wheel drive.

Volvos have made for some downright heroic rally cars. I prefer the wagons myself, so I don't think I'd ever race my 740 turbo because it's so big (I just traded one of my Hondas for an Impreza RS for a winter/rally beater), but I know firsthand how capable they are.

They're a pita though because of the integration. Can't just rip stuff out without pissing off the factory electronics. If you go this route also know the haldex AWD is really crappy for this use case but better than nothing. Make sure the car was well serviced. Find a T5 car ideally with AWD and the M66 manual. Get the newer haldex controller that engages the rear more aggressively, or have it reprogrammed. I think the V8 cars came with them.
The 1.8 isn't worth messing with. The 5cyls are awesome engines. PCV system isn't really great, fix that. And the fuel pump controller is very vulnerable, make sure it's seal well and protected. Then replace all the suspension bushings and you have yourself a pretty fun car. I bet you could put XC90 suspension on a sedan too, they're very similar like many unibody cars out there. I don't know how far the mounts/subframes vary but an AWD S40 T5 manual with XC90 suspension might be a hell of a car

One reason I race a 95 Impreza is because in St Louis, you don't need emissions on non-OBD-2 cars, meaning 95 and older. If you plan on really modifying your power train at all, this makes things SO much easier, and this is why I tend to turn away from post-96 cars.

This is a very interesting video to watch and there's a lot of useful information, but I think the MOST important thing you can do if you want to get it to rally is to continue your research beyond this video. The better you have an understanding for the car itself the better you will be able to prepare yourself and planning what vehicle is right for you to rally. Another great option if you've never experienced rally before is to get out attend a couple of your local events, talk to the teams that are competing. They'll tell you their stories and how they got where they are today, very very valuable information and I've done it myself! One last thing on the teams because I know this is turning into a paragraph comment is be a navigator for one of your local teams. Get some seat time feel what it's like to whip through the woods on some less than ideal roads, then you really get a sense of whether not rally is really the sport for you.

As someone who started on a hawkeye impreza with forrester struts, the best car to start on is an impreza with forrester struts. 175ish whp. Full time awd that's pretty predictable, pretty good on gas, pretty reliable, easy to work on, good looks, sounds great with a muffler delete (or an exhaust cutout which I have). There's alot of parts for the cars because of all the shared stuff between subarus, and the aftermarket scene is pretty good too. If you want some soft suspension forrester struts are perfect, if you want a stiffer ride keep the stock struts with the 150 dollar 3 inch spacer lift kit. Either way no matter what you want hawkeye impreza will deliver.

The volvo rear ends are pretty expensive to mod anywhere that is not sweden. In north america, the solution is a 6 cyl. toyota 4-runner live axle with supra mkIII LSD, weir performance maxgrip kit & at least a 4.56 final drive. All that can be had for cheap, a buddy just finished that kind of mod on a 240 for just a little over 1000$ cad, really good & solid!

Not a LSD, but a simple locker. Spartan lockers are $230, and have worked better than a welded diff in our rally car so far (20+ rallies). 4.88 ring and pinion is $130, or ~$200 for a 5.2 (which is what you really want). Even a 5.2 for a 1031 diff is $260 from Sweden, so very reasonable.
That being said, I am currently doing the Toyota diff swap since the future engine will have about 300 easy hp, and the d30 will not handle that. I will say that the Supra diff is far from perfect, and it needs to be shimmed every year to keep the preload up.

It wouldn't be legal to race with the rules the way they are, but a tube frame rally car would look a lot like a smaller scale Baja buggy. Lots of suspension travel with a low CG, similar to a trophy truck or Class 1 buggy just smaller... But with independent suspension all four corners and 4WD.

Fiesta... Mostly because an '02 is now 18 years old, here in NH that's only 7 years away from being eligible for Antique license plates! That means even if you find a good, low-mileage one that hasn't been abused, even just the years take their toll. All the plastics and rubber parts will be aged and brittle, there will be more seized nuts and bolts, stuff like the window motors, door locks, door seals, coolant hoses and brake lines and all that stuff starts to go bad... Simple stuff that you might not want to deal with. If you get a Fiesta, you just won't have any of those issues. All the nuts and bolts will come right out, the rubber and plastic parts will all be perfect, you'll spend more time driving and less time fiddling with the trunk latch or the plastic inner fender or some other part you shouldn't have to deal with. Also the SVT Focus is heavier and lower to the ground.

I think the fifth gen Camaro is pretty good for rallying, they are relatively cheap in terms of how much horsepower they make. Suspension is soft and have a reasonably good ground clearance . Parts aren’t really expensive. The only complaint is that it’s kinda heavy. You have to do a lot of weight reduction while still heavier than most car.

You can definitely just go out and play around with it, especially on smooth roads! The problem with rally is that there can be some really rough stretches that you still have to go fast through if you want to win... In your car, just slow down and go careful where there are any big ruts or rocks, places the car will bottom out. If you can find roads that are freshly graded or just nice and smooth, that's where you want to play.
