I'll be forever grateful for you recommending the Night Circus, absolutely deserves the 6/5 stars. I do remember the plot, but I know the vibes will stay with me for longer.
Dorian Grey - I read this book in my early-20s. It was brilliant, I loved it, and I knew right away that I would never be able to read it again because it freaked me out too much. 2 decades later, it is just as vivid in my mind, and I have never been able to re-read it.
I've been trying to find a way to describe the experience of reading the Night Circus for a long time and you said it perfecttt....It is definitely like a magical dream that you forget soon after waking up but the feeling stays
I remember reading the yellow wallpaper for a class and straight up psychoanalyzing the story and its meanings and talking about it with the class is one of my favorite things we did, it's just so brilliant
25:13 the way you describe red queen is so perfect. i read it december 2023, 20 years old and i Loved it, despite having read so many ya fantasy books. like yes give me all the mainstream tropes i am eating it up
The book that introduced me to reading was Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, I read it (in the original German) when I was in third grade. This book and especially the two sequels are what made reading fantasy books my main hobby for years, and tbh I still think this trilogy is extremely good.
Even though our taste in books so different but I read Six of Crows because of you and oh my god I loved it so so much!! Literally became one of my absolute favourites and I cannot wait to read Shadow and Bone now
29:38 I read The Hunger Games for a book report in middle school where we were allowed to pick our own books and I LOVED IT. Happily waited for Catching Fire and Mocking Jay. Still love that series so much ❤
Last year I read Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine thanks to you. it definitely stayed with me and I love it so ! much, it's a 6/5 for me! So I'm glad you talked about it in your channel 💜
To me, the Fault in Our Stars absolutely still holds up! It doesn’t shy away from the horrors of terminal illness - it is so raw in that sense. It also discusses a lot of issues I enjoy reading about; mortality, authorship, existentialism and so many more. ❤ I still find it amazing
Yaaay i'm so happy there's a new video!! I love your content so much lol please keep uploading. You're actually one of the only book channels I watch regularly! Thank u for this video
I read Uprooted last year and I was VERY pleasantly surprised by it, I mean I personally wouldn’t call it a five star read because it can be clumsy at times, the romance is kinda predictable (of COURSE she falls for the Dragon…) and the second half becoming intense high fantasy was kinda out of pocket, but that being said, I loved that book ! It’s a 4 stars from me, and I’m really quite picky, so I think you should try reading it again. You actually were the one who convinced me to pick it up despite the mixed reviews lol
the description of the night circus being a dream you can remember the feeling from but absolutely no story of is SO. ACCURATE?! something just clicked in me because i've been staring at it like, i KNOW i LOVE this book but WHY?? i do not REMEMBER IT?? but yeah, so that makes so much sense and i feel justified in loving this book i remember nothing about, thanks so much =D
I looooved Red Queen in 2015, it was my absolute favourite book in that year and with book 2 came the disappointment 😂 i didn't even make it through it. I really liked Scarlet when I re-read it a few years ago. I just love how similar our book tastes also have been in the past, Bunny and The Fifth Season are also absolute highlights 🥰
Managed to get quite sick but now get to watch this as i cozy up in my bed, thanks! Also fun to see how much you enjoyed A Gathering of Shadows. I read the ADSOM series when i was around 14 and currently at 19 am rereading it in my native language and they absolutely hold up! Sidenote, 14 year old me got a kitten and named her Hastra, clearly i love(d) this series 😂
lmao genuinely did not expect My Immortal to be on the list. My friends and I, ( we are all in our late 20s and early 30s btw), would always watch a dramatic reading of My Immortal every Christmas. It's tradition at this point. Nice to see someone else's friend group appreciates this bad masterpiece.
now I wish I would've started rating books way earlier so I could also do this (just for myself) but I only started doing that in 2020 :( great video, so fun to see what you ranked these!
the book that really introduced me to reading was "they both die at the end". creative plot, tragic ending that is spoiled by the title but still hits hard, and it's queer without making the WHOLE thing about being queer. it's not the best book on the planet but it kept my attention in a reading slump and it has a special place in my heart.
You were the first book channel I ever found in 2017. So I remember your early books so well. I remember getting Eona and Uprooted from the library, and reading Cruel Beauty, Red Queen and Vicious on your reccomendations. This is hilarious for me.
The trilogy that got me into reading and my first ever YA one was also Shadow and Bone. It really did end up shaping my reading tastes and now looking back at it, it isn’t anything special, but it also does have a place in my heart because those were the books that sent me on my long journey of reading!
As someone who has been rewatching ATLA (the original animation) every year for Idk how many years now and has the ENTIRE range of the comics (both prequels and sequels) in my goodreads read/to-be-read, I nearly SQUEALED when you mentioned that you own some of them and are a huge fan.
A lot of people I know that read The Night Circus, didn't liked it, so I was a bit hesitant to start it, but I absolutely loved it! I totally agree with your 'No thoughts, just vibes' :)
I’m currently reading Vicious and personally it’s unlike anything I’ve read and I’m obsesseddddd (I am however a teenager, so like, I have so much more to read lol)
omg the experience that you had with red queen of like LOVING the first book and then reading the second and coming to your senses was EXACTLY the same for me ajsdfjsdfhg the way i was obsessed with it and then crushed by how bad the second one actually was
I'm afraid to do this because when i was a teenager i used to give 5 star to everything that was half decent hahaha everything would fit into the ''i didn't know better'' hahaha
The grisha trilogy is also those type of books that aren't great but are ranked so highly for me. I was OBSESSED. I still am😅 Also vicious was an instant 5 stars for me, No questions asked, hands down one of my favourite books. With ninth house I remember giving it 4 stars or a little above but when I look back,I don't think that I'd like it as much. The only thing I remember are ghosts and the MC having a foot fetish. I don't know if I'll ever read the sequel.
I'm reading A Gathering of Shadows right now and you just made me even more excited! Though also stressed because I want Kell and Lila to meet again nowww
Currently reading the Red Queen series (how read the two first books) and I honestly like it. I’m pretty new to having reading as a hobby and have never read much throughout my life so you could blame it on that haha. But I think they are pretty cool at least.
I love that your comfort category is just full of revenge and villains XD I'm so about it. Oh I loved the Eon duology! I loved the concept of the dragons in the books and how they bond to their pairs, but I don't remember the romance whatsoever XD Have you read Naomi Novik's newer book Spinning Silver? I felt like that one was a really interesting mix of Jewish heritage and fae magic. The romance is very undeveloped but I loved the world and the story.
23:50 I read family of liars, the prequel to we were liars...it's been a year and a half and I'm still searching for a book that gives me that feeling! And I'm telling you, yes, the plot was better and the thriller part was not that bad but I LOVED the summer and island vibes! God, I still have vivid images of three blond girls on an Island kissing boys and searching for lemons
the "I didn't know better" is so real. I had a short phase where i read a few mystery thriller, and I would love to read more, but so far all three or four of them i rated 5 stars and I truly believe it's just because I need to read more of them to learn what a good mystery thriller is lmao
Thanks to you i discovered Leigh Bardugo and i love her books. Recently i finished six of crows and i gave it 5 stars (6/5 in your tier list). Then i also read the second book and rated it 4 stars like you. I am so excited for her new book. Maybe you could do a reading vlog when the new book comes out? Love your videos and your vibe. ❤
26:17 the first book to mark me like this was my first adult fantasy book, A Game of Thrones, when I was 18. Before that I almost exclusively only read Paranormal Romance and some YA fantasy (HP, PJO, Twilight, House of Night, Fallen, Hush Hush, TMI). I feel like it (A Song of Ice and Fire books) set the bar too high, ever since that I haven't been that obsessed about an universe and its politics
Obviously not counting the children books that introduced me to reading back when I was 4 (mostly fairytails) because I'd read anything I'd see (which hadn't changed that much, even though I don't like a book summary, I'm still curious about it's contents)
For me the book that isn’t that great but introduced me to a particular genre and reading that it will always have a special place in my heart is the whole The Vampire Academy series! I still vividly remember how I felt that time and how I cried but looking back it really isn’t that good I was just a teenager lol. 😂
I’ve been looking for book recs after a hunger games reread took me out of a very long reading slump and then stuck me right back into one. Tried we were liars and red queen and was very underwhelmed. I think you might just be my savior
I had that experience recently where I saw a book on my Libby history and I was like I don’t remember reading this and then went on Goodreads and found that not only did I read it, but I apparently gave it 5 stars 🤨🥴
I’ve read Red Queen and then got confused as hell as to why you loved it so much As a person who consumes a lot of mid literature because I usually exist in the subgenre most people hate on, I thought that that book was boring and formularic and generally uninteresting Makes more sense now My first language is not English, so I’m still trying to get into what one might call better books, but right now I’m mostly comfortable with rather generic stuff (by that I mean that I’d started the Fifth Season and then gave up because world-building + level of English were actually unattainable at that time)
i read the red queen last year for the first time fully expecting to hate it and yet??? i enjoyed it. i was gagged by the betrayal ngl... let's just think that liking the red queen is the exception that proves the rule that we have great taste 😂
Such a fun video! I took the oportunity to look back at my own 5 star reads, which was quite interesting. I'm about as old as you, but I don't use goodreads and only started bookjournaling in the middle of 2021 so I can't go back too far, but still
Honestly, I haven't read TFIOS in a long time but I think I'd still love it today cuz like...I lived with someone who had cancer when I read it, and I related so much to their situation and their dark humor...I think when you've gone through that yourself or were close to someone who did, it really is a breath of fresh air to read. It's so authentic. But I also get not totally loving it if it's not something you relate to lol. Like in that way it's just another random romance book.
I read Scarlet when I was in my mid thirties and absolutely loved it- so I don't think it's a case of "you didn't know any better"- it really was a great story!
I love looking back to see how much reading tastes change over time, I think the series for me is And I Darken. Its not a good series but it started a love affaor with retellings that I still have to this day
you should do a follow-up video where you reread the books in the ”i’m afraid…” category :)
yes!
That'd be fun!
Oh that‘s a great idea 🙌
Yes! I need this 😂
You guys are so sadistic lmao

you're right about My Immortal and I'm tired of pretending it's not high art
it’s the epitome of style
My Immortal is the greatest piece of content ever.
One thing I think people routinely forget about The Hunger Games is that it was never meant to be a romance novel.
I agree.
Ik! Its supposed to be about kids that have to murder each other in games and peeta and katniss ( in the first two books ) weren’t really in love they were doing it to survive!
I absolutely loved the hunger games

Woah...I was just thinking 'maybe let's check bookleo' and you manifested
same!
Literally just finished one of her other videos and this popped up 😂

Had to stop at 0:45 to admire the gorgeous color on your nails and mug! Ok, carry on.
Omg
I finally see someone talking about radio silence
wow uhhh this made me just realize how long I've been watching your videos lol. Glad to have been here 4ish years now!! :)
the "I didn't know better" is so real. I had a short phase where i read a few mystery thriller, and I would love to read more, but so far all three or four of them i rated 5 stars and I truly believe it's just because I need to read more of them to learn what a good mystery thriller is lmao
Hope you had a great Easter, Leonie! Love your take on books!
I read Uprooted last month and absolutely adored it!! I think it would survive the test of time for you 😊
26:17 the first book to mark me like this was my first adult fantasy book, A Game of Thrones, when I was 18.
Obviously not counting the children books that introduced me to reading back when I was 4 (mostly fairytails) because I'd read anything I'd see (which hadn't changed that much, even though I don't like a book summary, I'm still curious about it's contents)
i read uprooted recently and i was absolutely obsessed with it
You can absolutely reread Uprooted, I read this last year and is amazing, the vibes are on point aushaushuasuhasuh
The Search is excellent, I liked seeing Zuko reunite with his mother.
Can thankfully say that The Lunar Chronicles absolutely holds up to rereading!
I love the I blacked out for a second 😂😂😂
For me the book that isn’t that great but introduced me to a particular genre and reading that it will always have a special place in my heart is the whole The Vampire Academy series! I still vividly remember how I felt that time and how I cried but looking back it really isn’t that good I was just a teenager lol. 😂
this video is genious! I loved it! I can relate so much to this as a reader! I now wonder where i'd rank my 5 star books now
I’ve been looking for book recs after a hunger games reread took me out of a very long reading slump and then stuck me right back into one.
I’ve read Red Queen and then got confused as hell as to why you loved it so much
As a person who consumes a lot of mid literature because I usually exist in the subgenre most people hate on, I thought that that book was boring and formularic and generally uninteresting
Makes more sense now
My first language is not English, so I’m still trying to get into what one might call better books, but right now I’m mostly comfortable with rather generic stuff (by that I mean that I’d started the Fifth Season and then gave up because world-building + level of English were actually unattainable at that time)
i read the red queen last year for the first time fully expecting to hate it and yet??? i enjoyed it. i was gagged by the betrayal ngl... let's just think that liking the red queen is the exception that proves the rule that we have great taste 😂
You gotta read Rouge by Mona Awad, her version of a Snow White retelling it rocked my world!!!
the shadow and bone series most definitely changed my brain chemistry bc I wasn't a reader until I read those books, and now it's my fav hobby ever!!
I love looking back to see how much reading tastes change over time, I think the series for me is And I Darken. Its not a good series but it started a love affaor with retellings that I still have to this day
