I agree. I love seeing my shelves filled with up-right standing books, especially if there's multiple series in a row that are completed or just a full shelf of oneshot books.
As someone with crouwded shelves... yeah, I like the crowded shelves! I think its pretty to have trinkets and such, but at the end of the day, my bookshelves are for books so they usually get ousted to make space for more stories.
I adore bookshelves entirely packed with neatly ordered, spine-out books. Not messy or with vertical piles or trinkets in the way or anything like that, just "basic" rows of books with their spines all lined up neatly, filling every shelf.
I personally LOVE an overstuffed bookshelf, probably because I've always dreamt of living in an old library or a used bookstore. 🤓❤ I find the fullness of it cozy and inviting.
I think you’re seeing a lot of “apartment white” walls. In America you can’t paint your walls in apartments and they are almost always a vanilla white, and in medium light they can look a little greenish.
You beat me to it - yes, I think the lighting in the photos just make them look a different shade but I assume all those walls are just variations on white. Painted walls in many places is the privilege of homeowners.
Whoever is bookshelf number five that was described as chaotic I’m so envious of you! It’s the clutter I strive for, a great ratio of trinkets and books. Love how there is random room at the end of the shelves to stuff what you want.

You never have to get rid of books! Books don't need to breathe, they need to be read! I love every bookshelf that has books, whether half-filled or overflowing.
Not the Billy bookshelf slander! I actually like them because I feel like they make books stand out more, while brown shelves kind of blend in with the books.
Anyone with any open shelf space on their bookshelf is astonishing to me. I don’t think I’ve had an open inch on my book shelf… ever. Breathing room who? Loved this; seeing real book shelves, rather than Pinterest and Instagram-perfect shelves is refreshing! Hope you’ll do more of these!
yeah, i have 492 books in my room, space? what is she? I have 2 more books coming as well. also: I dont get not liking white shelves? mine are white and pink, fits with my soft girly room better than dark colors ever would.
I recently moved and got rid of some books beforehand to make moving easier. I now have waaaaay too much space on my shelves, but that just means I now need to fill it up!
I organize by genre but that always looks like I've organized by color. Romance is normally pink/red/pastels. Horror/Thriller is normally black. Historical fiction is black and yellow.
Instead of buying new bookshelves, especially if you have the Billy ones, you could also resort to round the edges with black colored wood or maybe crochet something to alter the form. There are lots of ways to alter them in a way that makes them more personalized and not as common! Added bonus: you wouldn't need to pay half a liver for new shelves.
for sure! I also took the backs off mine and I'm considering painting them to look more like wood but that's a bit more of a labour intensive project haha
I moved recently and got dark wooden bookshelves (also Billy just not white) and my old white Billy got a mid life career change and is now a kitchen shelf.
coming to say as someone who has painted my walls that light greenish colour i do lowkey regret it, it feels very cold, so id recommend getting it slightly darker and very warm toned
I’m moving soon as well and this vid motivates me to make my shelves even MORE witchy and atmospheric (also your dress has the vibe of the vintagy Dutch Delfts Blauw porcelain and I love it)
my book shelf aesthetic rn is I ran out of space and I can't get another bookshelf so I'm just going to organize best on how it fits in the space. You can tell because I have a regency romance series sitting on top of my Nancy drew books because that is how it fit on the books shelf. oh yes and random trinkets everywhere. I have very little space so i have placed my books in the part of my wardrobe that has a hole in it. That way i can access the books from two sides and use the full depth of the shelf. On one side are the cooking and study and music books, on the otherside the "pleasure reads". The other side is also faced towards a window and sofa. I have hoarding in my family, and I have the gene, so I dont own any books for my mental health. Minimalism was rough at first, but honestly, I feel so much happier in my place now. I am an avid library book and Kindle reader now. I love all the bookshelves people have. It's fun to see even if I dont have one for myself.
I decided not to share mine since I had put a lot of my history books into books, leaving this massive gap on the one shelf, which were subsequently filled halfway with textbooks and some of my classics. But my shelf was made by my dad and I a few years back. I have my CD collection on it. My books are generally split by author, it may look like a scatterbrain went loose but there's a method to my madness
So I did a fun thing when reorganising my bookshelves this year, I put all my to read books on 2 shelves (lmao help) and chose the shelves that are like at the right height for me to grab. So the middle of my bookshelf has been changing quite a lot but I love it, it’s so handy. I’ve also got a section for books that I have read this year so I can see my progress and can sort through which ones I want to keep at the end of the year ✌️
You had good advice and you weren't terribly judgy. Good on you. What I got most from your narrative is how subjective bookshelf style can be. I'm the opposite of "let them breath" - I look at bookshelves that aren't primarily all books and think of all that wasted space! I wonder if they really read or if they just like to use books as decor. Admittedly, my shelves are too full, literally overflowing onto the ground, but I still prefer the aesthetics of a bookshelf that's 80-90% books.

I once organized my shelves by color (okay to be honest they are still like that since I have no time to reorganize) but now my greatest pride and joy is my excel spreadsheet with all my books organized by Dewey decimal, then alphabetically by author last name, color coded by genre.
Honestly, I like bookshelves full of books without knick-knacks, because first I didn't have the space, why? because I didn't have the money to buy a new bookshelf. Furniture is expensive where I live, so I always work with what I have. I only have one bookshelf, so all books (both novels, textbooks, reference books, journals, even bullet journal tools), have to fit in that bookshelf. When I organize my bookshelf, I focus on how to place the books so that I can fit lots of books at once. if they had to be stacked upwards they could hold more books, then one shelf stacked upwards would dominate until all my books fit. (sorry English is not my first language)
I really need to save money and finally overhaul the whole furniture in my room. I dream of a huge corner wardrobe so I can have wall space for a giant bookshelf with a hidden vanity in between. My books (and kpop albums) need SPACE 😫
Fun video! And a lot of inspiration for my own bookshelves. First up - get rid of my DVDs and BlueRays. I haven't watched a single one in 5+ years. Then my books can BREATHE. I love the idea of some pretty lights to warm up the area. And plants.
Witch hat atelier manga spotted! I know Leonie doesn't read manga but this one I feel like is the perfect introduction for a fan of fantasy it's just so whimsical and gorgeous.
If you don't like the color of your shelves or walls, you can always paint them! I'm surprised she didn't recommend that as an option. Also, you can use real candles. That's what I do!
I’m doing a complete clean up on my bookshelf. Meaning selling lots of books that I don’t want to keep. And also since I’m a mood reader , I want to have several books on each genre. Than just 1 or 3. That way I less likely to go in a reading slump. I like to have a variety of everything. Right I have too much one of genre and not much else.
I’ve been watching this after just discovering your channel. Whilst I’ve been listening to you talk I’ve been glancing around at my bookshelves and thinking yeah they are not organised in the slightest! Next time you do one of these I’m going to send a photo.
Hey, color-coordinated book nerds - check out the British Library's Tales of the Weird collection. The covers slap and the collected stories are always interesting
WARNING: Pushing books all the way to the back causes them to degrade faster. Pulling them all to the front makes it so they can breathe and then the paper lasts longer. And telling people to get rid of books is fightin' words!
i moved in with my partner a few months ago and our biggest interior design disagreement (apart from lamps. we still haven't bought lamps) was how to organise our newly merged bookshelves 😂
How about organizing them by Library of Congress classification, then within each, alphabetical by author or editor surname? I see your Dark Academia and raise you actual academia. Bring it!
my shelf is organized by vibe/genre regardless of height or color. i have also read all of them except 3 so the vibes are not a question. I use knickknacks and stuffed animals as bookends too
Leonie, I feel so weird requesting videos , but I'd love to know more about your professional and academic life. What are you doing nowadays, and if you haven't finished your master's degree, what do you intend to do when it's over. Maybe you could talk about that if it isn't too personal !! Kisses , love your vids
leonie for every shelf: "add a little plant"
And a little candle 🕯️
Add a little lamp
Add a decaying banana

If you don't like the color of your shelves or walls, you can always paint them! I'm surprised she didn't recommend that as an option. Also, you can use real candles. That's what I do!
I'm sharing my bookshelf with my mom, because we both love to read and both have a huge book collection.
Leoni you are such a pleasure to watch! You have been an inspiration to me lately in many aspects, and i wish you all the best in life!!
Personally I like white bookshelves as they go with my mostly pink apartment decor ^^
leonie would HATE my bookshelves LMAO
this was so entertaining!!
Omg yesss plants everywhere 😍 loved how that was your main takeaway. Add plants and lighting
Please do a part two. I love thiss❤
Now I want you to see and judge my little bookshelf 😂 (no really I hope you do another one of these)
I’ve been watching this after just discovering your channel.
Giving more space to books is a good tip in theory, but you also need the space for more shelves in your place
my entire wall is just books and let me tell ya.. it sucks in terms of dust!!!
Thank you, Leonie. I enjoyed the analyses and have some new ideas! ❤
i moved in with my partner a few months ago and our biggest interior design disagreement (apart from lamps. we still haven't bought lamps) was how to organise our newly merged bookshelves 😂
- Leo, I’m dying!
- Add some fake candles and a little plant!
0:23 but why _is_ there a decaying banana??
That threw me of gaurd
The setup at 19:30 looks like Jack Edward's one a lot! I mean the bookshelves being in that spot etc
I love this.
The thoughts on people's bookshelves.
I want a bookshelf so badly.
I'm just not able to yet.
I honestly kinda like full/messy bookshelves, but that might just be the maximalist in me. I think they can add a lot of personality to a bookshelf
Been using Trainwell since last July and it has been such a positive in my life 😊
How about organizing them by Library of Congress classification, then within each, alphabetical by author or editor surname?
I see your Dark Academia and raise you actual academia. Bring it!
I feel like she keeps saying, "You clearly have the money for another bookshelf." But sometimes the issue isn't money, but space.
my shelf is organized by vibe/genre regardless of height or color. i have also read all of them except 3 so the vibes are not a question. I use knickknacks and stuffed animals as bookends too
THE QUEEN POSTED 👑
Leonie, I feel so weird requesting videos , but I'd love to know more about your professional and academic life. What are you doing nowadays, and if you haven't finished your master's degree, what do you intend to do when it's over. Maybe you could talk about that if it isn't too personal !!
Kisses , love your vids
Yes I would love this
