Bunion Splints and Correctors: Are They Worth It? [Doctor Review]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- Bunion splints and bunion correctors can be a good alternative to bunion surgery. They can sometimes be a good bunion treatment, but they are usually not a great permanent solution. They simly work by stretching your big toe, but as time goes on, they simply can't overcome your entire body weight with hundreds or even thousands of steps per day. Bunion correctors and bunion splints are probably not worth the money, but they can be very expensive.
Bunion gel pads and orthotics on the other hand have been proven to be extremely effective in getting rid of your foot pain.

All the people I know who had bunion surgery now have worse problems than before. I have now become scared of surgery but man I despise the bunions..on both feet now.
I have bunions from my family I'm 17 what I can do?
QUESTION: Is the Splint or the Corrector your favorite?
UPDATE: 2020 TOP 9 Bunion Home Treatments! ua-cam.com/video/Y-46QJmICWc/v-deo.html
I have severe bunions, they’re genetic and had them since at least kindergarten. I’m 25 now. They don’t cause me any pain but they’re embarrassing. Is surgery only recommended if they’re painful?
I'm 17 and my bunions are also hereditary , mine don't cause me any pain. Do you know if bunion correcter works?
Rashad Flanders from my understanding they only work short term- the only way to fully correct them are surgery and even then there’s a fairly high chance of needing more surgeries as the bunion can still come back. :/ That’s just what I read up on anyway, hopefully I’m corrected lol
@@arualedenxo3815 alright thx mane.
I wonder if you can just pop them back to place? My 14 yr old son has one and I dont want him to get surgery. If yall find anything or if I do come back and tell us. To help other people out as well. Thanks
Ka Ri Na I don’t think that’s possible, but yes if anyone figures out alternatives to surgery share with the rest of us please lol :)
Bunion correctors don’t work if you don’t restrengthen the muscles once the bones are back in alignment. It took effort to get a bunion it will take effort to get rid of it. Wear minimalist/barefoot shoes(Xero, Vivo, Lems, to name a few) to allow your foot to function properly. A Cramped toe box, arch supports and padded soles in shoes disform and weaken feet, proper foot exercises will strengthen your arch as well as the 29 other muscles that are associated with the foot.
Excellent input, thanks!
Excellent information. Thank you
Thanks for the kind words!
I had the surgery on both feet. They realign your bones and if there's calcification they shave it off. Had my surgery in my 30s & was best thing I ever did. This foot deformity can run in families. I'm in my 60s & my feet are still straight. Wore removable casts for 6wks & wore men's sneakers (they ran wider back then) for a couple of months.
How much did it cost for both feet and how much did insurance cover? Also, how long was the healing process?
is there still pain after the surgury?

Hello from the UK🇬🇧.
I have flat feet, really flat like a pancake, absolutely no arch and my feet roll. I also have bunions. I have always had pain in my feet from childhood. Sometimes it feels as if there is no skin under my feet and that I'm walking on my bone. The surface of the road to me feels like hard metal. So my discomfort is real. Very painful indeed. I am constantly massaging my feet at night. I do foot exercises every day.
During the Autumn/Winter the tendons in my feet feel really tight especially in the morning. I wince when I step out of bed as my feet feel really tight. I sometimes get lower back pain or sciatica. I don't wear high heels as I have never been able to walk in them. I can't wear really flat sandals as afterwards my feet are in agony. I choose my shoes sensibly.
I have seen a few doctors about my feet and they made me insoles to wear in my shoes but I still have pain. What else can I do?
@Daisy Daisy Hi Daisy thank you so much for replying to me. I have used Epsom salts before, so will definitely be soaking my feet in it. I recently bought some cushion insoles and they did make a difference. Sorry to sound silly the alcohol you refer to. Is it the alcohol you drink or is it alcohol that is bought in the chemist? I will look on Amazon for Dr Ho's massage device. I find when I walk that my toes are scrunched up as I walk. As soon as I realise I relax my toes but I literally have to remind myself every few mins. Will be trying all you recommend.
Thanks again.
Love from UK 🇬🇧.
@Daisy Daisy Thanks Hon😀😀
I was born with bunions and my guess is these won't do anything based on my understanding of what a bunion is. If late onset bunions are different than genetic ones you're born with then maybe these corrective splints may help bring things back to normal. But if you're born with them I don't see these things working.
2:14 those are different feet. Look at the toe length
That tends to happen with the bone getting re-adjusted in surgery. It is also a cropped photo.
What if the pain is unbearable? Walking a k or two is agony. I'm too scared to go to a podiatrist. Can I just DIY tape?
Go to podiatrist that's what I'm doing
Does years of jogging cause bunions. I've got a very painful one on one foot.
Overpronation and improper load can lead to bunions. This video may help! ua-cam.com/video/O_T6_xHTph0/v-deo.html
My 14 yr old has one and i don't want him to get surgery, is there a way 100% to be healed without surgery?
Me too
Surgery won’t help the underlying cause!
I got a milder crooked big toe, still flexible, can wearing a gel loop over big toe that is thick between big toe and 2nd toe eventually straighten the toe, if not you said it still helps when playing tennis or other activity by having 1st toe straight while exercising?
1:14 I have these on right now as I’m watching this 😫
How much is minor surgery?
It doesn't work. It's came off when I woke up.
It can relax the tendons and ligaments but full correction may be tough for sure!
Why are you and Drew Brees and Copper Compression contradicting each other?
I was diligent in wearing good shoes, no high heels after the age of 21 and I only wore them sometimes back then. I took great care of my feet and had supports and when walking far, I got the ones designed for hiking. This said, bunions simply run in our family. I have a good arch to my feet, my twin sister had the identical issue. For us, surgery is all that can fix ours and we could not prevent them. I am getting surgery this year to correct mine and hope that they don't return. I am going to be 58 and they gave me pain now for 2 years. Prior to that when they first started I had no pain.
Did you ever get the surgery?
@@legendofawwsheet5883 Not yet but going to in the coming months. Had to get hubby thru his life saving medical care first which we just did!!
@@romy4593 good he got through it. Did you ever find some good insoles or a brand that help slow down the bunion at least
@@legendofawwsheet5883 Thank you kindly! All I can wear to lessen pain now are my Teva sandals. They don't go around the bunion portion. That is very pain relieving. I am getting my appt set to start the process this week. First the primary care, then podiatrist and finally the orthopedic surgeon. It will take some months but I have to. My bones in my feet both shifted again. :(
My splint worked great but mine has always been small
Jesus Christ. Can he SPEAK UP. Can’t hear him at all
Why can’t you push it back in place if it’s not really bad ?
When arthritis gets a hold on your connective tissue that hold your bones in place, the connective tissue is weakened. Ouch!
Absolutely great point!

to many pics for me 😅 but thanks it was very healpful. my bunion is close to non existant only I have noticed it ... so I stoped wearing heals entirely because it started to dislocate .. so I was wondering if there are actualy other meens to kinda work on it if it is still very unnoticable.
Same here it's slightly noticeable but does give me pain if I have had a long day I'm worried about it eventually getting worse its like is there any measures to prevent that 🤔😫 I'm still having a look if I find out I'll comment back here xxx
@@jodiiperez9591 well as much as I could find out only operation is posible. And if it is still small try to not whear shoes that make it worse. For the pain there are ... Hi! I have a question. So i have to wear ice skates which are very narrow (but I can’t do anything with that they just have to be like that) for few hours a week. In general I have small bunions especially in my left foot but I had that before my skating adventure. Is this kind of bunion corrector a good idea to prevent getting bigger bunions? Any chances that it will work? I don’t wanna repear anything, just prevent bigger changes in the future.

Same I’m 14 and have them

I’ve a question.
Is the problem the big toe being pushed inwards, or is it the metatarsal bone being farther out then it should be?
Or a combination of both?
Its the big toe being pushed inwards, modern footwear is almost 100% responsible for the incidence of bunions
My daughter has a bunion.. these do not work. The reason it's a bone issue.. the bone rotates causing the toe to bow in and the bone to stick out. The only fix is 3D Lapiplasty.. the old surgery only cosmetically fixes the problem. the 3D surgery fixes the root of the problem.
the splint worked for me, but you gotta make that money.
Hey we would love nothing more than for there to be simple solutions, but the splints are overall extremely well studied and the results known. People act like there is some conspiracy theory to stop these things from working. But the reality is people should feel free to try it. It is extremely rare to see a patient come in that has not tried at least some of this stuff already, no one has any need to suppress this stuff.
If you want to order a splint and use it go for it, but why then watch a video to see if it works?
Hello I would like to know if this silicone inlays also works for hammer toes?
Some people love them, some hate them!
Some exercises to follow would have been good 🤔
Unfortunately as much as we would love to, there are no reliable bunion exercises. It's all about good shoes, good orthotics and to correct the bone possible procedures
We are always on the hunt for good proven evidence, not much exists out there
Michigan Foot Doctors surely there are some that are worth a try? Since I’m following a rehab program for spinal nerve damage (hopefully avoiding surgery) and I already do a few foot exercises I’ll persist and see how it goes!
I noticed bunions after having many gout flair ups.
would the splints work as a preventative measure?
Another bit of information. Walking on concrete is very bad on your joints no matter how large or small a person is. Very important to wear good shoes specially designed for this kind of abuse. If you need them, I hope you are able to find them.
Thanks!
Your welcome. I have work at one place over 40 years. I have seen a lot. The main building covers over 23 acres. A lot of walking.
Can someone make the shoe manufacturers like Redwing, and Wolverine design a better steel toed shoe or boot. Something with a thicker sole. Please. It's too late for me, but maybe it will help others.
How long should you wear a bunion splint?
3 months.
I’ve had bunions for years since I was at the age of 6. I’ve been told I’ve also have very flat feet. My bunions hurt when I walk and because I do a lot of sports I tend to be In pain and my bunion pushes onto the side of my shoes (trainers). Nearly all my shoes are creased because of my bunions. I’m additions my toes go slanted (opposite way) and they fit the shape of an actual shoe. They either go left or right. Also my big toe rubs against my second toe and because of this it has caused a bump on both of my 2nd to largest toes on each foot. I’m not to sure if this is a severe case but hopefully someone could inform me on the type of bunion and surgery etc. I’m quite scared due to me not being able to participate in sports and me still being part of college
fix your flat feet first that's the main reason you have a bunion
have you looked into Lapiplasty? The 3D surgery.. My daughter has a bunion and is going to have that surgery.
I've been researching Correct Toes and just decided to buy some. Have you heard of them? I don't have severe foot issues, though, and I'm not an athlete. I have bunions and am starting to get hammertoes.
@@maddaballer6976
I agree, fix the issues with flat feet first. Then you should see improvements. Buy inserts, and toe separators for pain relief.

I am sure you do making a fortune
Can someone please help me out? When I walk my feet lean inwards and I have bunions, I've developed those bunions, they havent been there since birth
Now I have these special soles that support my feet but I dont think that's enough, they don't seem to fully work
I mean, it does relieve some pain but it doesn't exactly strenghten my feet.. Does someone know exercises to make the bunion less severe or anything like that
I've tried the big toe separator but my foot doctor says that I shouldn't use it because it could cause long term side effects that are even worse
I'm currently 14 and I'd say my bunions aren't exactly bad (yet) but I have had them for about 6 years now
Not sure if it's relevant but I also do ballet and love to do other sports, after long periods of training my bunions start to hurt a lot so that's also why I really wanr to get rid of them or at least make them less severe
A bit of a necro reply but if your family is pre-dispositioned to bunions, ballet "can" accelerate the condition. I would consult a podiatrist for better advice.
Source: my family is pre-dispositioned and we've had the exact same bunion problem in 4 generations on the exact same foot.
Hi! I've been really enjoying your videos and content. I have a question for you, what could be the name of a foot deformity I've been developing. I've noticed both because of extreme pain and a noticeable difference over the last few months that my big toe is always very swollen and painful and the joint seems to be pushing into the second toe. I don't have a bunion but the big toe has started to curved. It's been a frustrating and painful experience because I keep getting told by my podiatrist that my feet look fine to them and they don't go into detail about what shoes would be a better fit for me.
The confusing part about stories like this is that the bone structure is normal but under weight(over pronation), the tendons pull the big toe over. While not standing there is no signs of a bunion. We see these usually as one calf/leg/knee slightly tighter than the other forcing the long tendons to pull the toes over. But always trust your doctor and work with them, this is just general thoughts!

Some sandals are definitely better than others, if you buy on-linr try the orthotic styles like vionic or spenco, not quite an A+ but better than a regular flip flop!

They can definitely reduce the pain without surgery, but if the joint is arthritic and dislocated, the results won't be perfect. Orthotics and shoes definitely reduce if not eliminate the pain, but bone changes are a little bit harder to come by unless very flexibile.

I hear bunions described as "calcifications" and as "dislocations". Which is it?
Both, first it dislocates then calcium deposits start to grow, during surgery they don’t “ shave the bone” like people think, they cut out the calcium deposits so they can realign the toe joints, hope that answers your question
No. Separating your toes can acctually worsen bunions, causing first bone to drop even more from second. Search for kinesiotaping bunion instead.
