  • TURN ON THE SUBTITLES!
    Hey, it's Jasper! In this episode of May Kwento Ako (I Have a Story), we dive deep into the historical roots of colorism in the Philippines, exploring how colonial mentality shaped beauty standards. From personal experiences to the impact of media and the skin-whitening industry, I uncover the harsh realities tied to skin tone. Let's challenge these norms together, celebrate our diversity, and embrace a new era of Filipino beauty beyond skin deep. Join the conversation, share your thoughts, and let's break free from the chains of colorism!

    Dude, I love your insights here man. I really didn't mind the seriousness of the situation until you pointed it out on this video. I was not able to notice this problem when I was still watching teleseryes back then with my mom so it was an eye opener for me on the things you said here. Lagi din ako inaasar dati in highschool because of my skin color so I can really relate to what you have stated here. Keep creating contents like these man. Keep it up!

    Eyy I made it to your video! Keep up the good work bro. I can't imagine the amount of effort in the motion graphics and all the animations, plus filming the B-rolls. The production quality is amazing for a one man band. Looking forward for episode 3 👌🏽

    I experienced being teased because of my dark skin. Parang DLC character sa video game na need pa ipurchase to be unlocked. I bought whitening lotion, facial washes, and soaps (hanggang college) just to have lessen the darkness of my skin. But eventually, after a couple of tours to the US, I accepted my dark skin and mas naging masaya ko. Doon ko lang nalaman na people don't care what your skin color is as long as you're good to others and accept for what you are. I wasn't discriminated by people because of my skin and mas lalo kong nappreciate skin color ko kasi some Americans or want to have achieve our skin tone. Filipinos need to appreciate what they have. They'll be happier I think. Thanks sa vid mo bro and I hope it reaches out to more kababayans. Subscribed!!

    I have an issue with the showbiz industry doing black face on artists who are playing characters that are supposed to be brown-skined. Just hire celebrities with natural brown skin. ALSO, I notice the sidekick of the main main character is usually brown while the main character is usually light-skinned.

      This is so true. I think Philippine media is still stuck on that old Hollywood star system where they will always cast a known actor to play roles like this because so that the film/show can be marketable. Problem is, we don't have a lot of known celebrities that are indegenous and media companies are not looking for them. :( It would be great to see more of them in commercials though para mas makilala sila. The closest thing to it was that Safeguard ad from years ago pero that ad was heavily tied with an indegenous story. I would like to see someone from their group that would star in a commercial that involves something else either food, perfume, or any other products.

    Very well done video documentary of Filipino inferiority complex. Good you cited and quoted extensively from that pioneering study of the skin whitening industry in the Philippines by Dr. Roger Lee Mendoza, who is considered the foremost authority on the subject.

    OOF the snow white character really was a bad move, YIKES

    • @jasperabibas
      @jasperabibas  7 місяців тому

      Back then, I thought it was funny, but I was also ignorant that time about how bad of a move the Snow White chatacter is. Dozens of people worked on that movie and it was greenlit by the ABSCBN and Viva Film board. I hope it'll be the last time of us seeing another character like that, but at the same time, not a lot of Filipinos are aware of the colorism topic and how it can affect the Filipino society. Colonialism might've solidified colorism in the Philippines, but Philippine media is doubling it down.

      I hope so too. It will take time pero I would like to see a world where darker skinned Filipinos wouldn't need to conform to celebrities' body features they're seeing on TV. That's why representation matters.
