  • In the Philippines, many people will go to great lengths to lighten their skin because the sad truth of it all is that in Filipino culture dark skin equates to being dirty, ugly, and poor. In this talk, speaker Bianca Punzalan will explore the origins of the colonial ideals of colorism and how we end anti-brownness once and for all. Bianca Punzalan is a senior at Moreau Catholic High School. She has been a member of student government, the Writers Club, and the National Honors Society at her school. She will be attending the University of California Berkeley in the fall to study environmental sciences at the Rausser College of Natural Resources. Bianca is a champion of sustainability and environmental justice in her community. Her other interests include Southeast Asian studies, volleyball, and visual arts. She hopes to further her advocacy and raise awareness of the effects of colorism, particularly how it affects women in the Philippines, into her college years. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As a Filipino, I am living proof of this stereotype, though dark skin is natural to us Filipinos there is still discrimination. Most of our countrymen prefer light-skinned over dark-skinned because it states social status that sets everyone apart from loving their natural skin color.

I’m sorry you experienced such pain and Happy that you now see your beauty.
In USA, many people pay money to lay in tanning beds to darken skin pigment.
I so deeply wish we humans saw one-another as a soul and treated others how we want to be treated-regardless of looks.

I’m Mexican American, and have only about 6% European blood. I’m mostly Aztec. I’ve always identified as being indigenous. Colorism in the Latino community certainly mirrors what exists in the Philippines. It’s slowly getting better but we have a long way to go. This young lady spoke with eloquence. And is of course beautiful.

While I'm watching this video, it's like I'm looking in the mirror hahaha. I'd also feel the pain of colorism in the Philippines. I always compare my skin to the white one. I feel like the world is very unfair because people who have white skin is like more attractive, beautiful, and special. That reason pushed me to use some beauty products that can lighten my skin and also I'd always wear long sleeves and pants. But this video makes me realize how beautiful I am in my own way. I should accept and love myself and be thankful for what God has given me.

Envy is dangerous for people mentally and physically, its unavoidable, its a natural emotion for most people to feel that way. I'm a dark-skinned and I don't compare my skin to anyone and I haven't compared my skin to anyone as well, I just believe that I'm unique and be proud of just being myself, that's all there is to it. I don't know If this can help other people but all I can say is just be CONFIDENT! that's all.

Colorism, is a Philippine culture, we get jealous to people who has lighter skin. No wonder skin whitening soap business is a boom in the country because we are so particular to our color and many people believe that white is beautiful. It is a mindset of beauty standard.

When I went to Maui, Hawaii, I saw a lot of Japanese tourists leaving Hawaii as pale as they arrived. They hid from the sun while in Hawaii!!! I asked a friend who has Japanese ancestry and she told me that light skin in Japan is very much prized in women (think Marie Kondo who looks like she has never seen the sun). Japan has never been a colony. I think the “who is the fairest one of all” attitude is dying, fortunately. Companies are finally hiring gorgeous dark skin models to advertise their products, to model, etc. Thank you for the talk. You are very pretty and SOOO smart and a great public speaker. Great combination! we all look so much healthier with a tan!

What an amazing speech, slay girl! and yes Colorism finds its roots in racism because, without racism, someone’s value and perceived superiority wouldn't be based on the color of their skin.
The attitude and acceptance that aligns whiteness with beauty have real-world consequences. “At the very least, I think we must center colorism in the wider conversation of racism

The Filipino obsession with white skin has little to do with Colonization and has more to do with Culture. It is the biggest misconception that I always hear when people talk about Filipino beauty standards.
The Binukot existed even before the Spanish arrived in the Philippines. These were princesses who were kept inside their houses and were not allowed to walk outside without being covered from the sun.
Most Asians have the same mindset because having darker skin meant working in the fields while having lighter skin meant being nobles who do not need to work.
Only Rich or Western-influenced Filipinos would obsess over having 'white' skin. Most everyday Filipinos would want 'fair' skin at best (kayumanggi). I even had classmates who made fun of someone for being too white because they turned red during P.E (PhysEd)

Thank you for mentioning that when there are dark Filipinas on movies/TV, they are there for comic relief and so it lowers your self-esteem. honestly this was very good but i do wanna say being afraid to tan IS NOT the only reason why we use umbrellas when it isn't raining, the weather in the philippines is tropical and usually the sun is "mahapdi" or feels like it burns when it's peak hot weather(harmful sunrays). im morena, and even filipinos of the darker shade are particular about harmful UV rays. there are def filipinos esp women who are nitpicky about getting darker but it's not really accurate to say that's the only reason why we have payongs/umbrellas out. it's basically to protect ourself to harmful rays mostly. it's basically too sunny and because of that you need portable shade. the being afraid to tan is more a secondary thing depending if someone has internalized colorism.

As an African one of the primary reasons that I have difficulties with some people with brown skin is due to their inability to accept themselves. I can't get along with a person that has a colonial mindset. They have hatred for Africans with darker skin but the irony is that they can't accept their beautiful brown or dark brown skin. Light brown to medium brown and dark brown skin when the sun hits it it's exceptionally gorgeous. Women with this skin tone literally radiates life itself. The tragedy is that they don't respect or accept the gift that they have. There are many people who wish they had your brown to dark brown skin yet you hate yourself. Not understanding the beauty that you have is mindless.

stop gaslighting us filipinos as if we dont know what we are doing here in the homeland. we love morenas, we are proud of our color. we love glowing, fairer skins because it signals good health.
we use lotions and whitening soaps NOT because we want to be like caucasians. We are using it as part of taking care of ourselves, as part of health routine to remove dead skins and dirt for example in order to have a smooth healthy skins. we have a hot weather here, remember? filipinos, in fact, with too "white" skins here are frown upon most of the times because it deems unpatriotic.

Whitening products are not used for a healthy skin regimen, they are used for exactly what's printed on the package, to whiten skin. So chill about her speaking her truth, she spoke it well. Colorism does exist & her talk is inspirational. It wasn't meant to criticize but to open people's eyes to a problem that runs deep in the Philippines.

As a pageant fanatic here for years who have seen national pageants live and know people who was the selection committee. It was never about about the colour of the contestant but rather the overall stage performance of the contestants. Also, we had winners back then who have darker and typical filipina beauty who represented the country before like Miss universe Philippines 2011,2013, 2016 and recently 2021 who actually almost snag the crown at miss universe.

Then tell me why there are an abundance of skin whitening products and advertisements in the Philippines. Only today do we see Filipinos accepting their skin color. The media has definitely been a vital role in why we Filipinos think the way we do when it comes to our skin color. I agree with what she said in the video. You can even watch an interview of Bretman Rock, a Fil-Am. He said the same thing about the Filipino showbusiness. It's sad but it's the reality.

Actually, the effects of colonialism still affect the Philippines today and most people don't even notice it. Compared to other Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines has been colonized multiple times (by Spain, America, and Japan). Although Spain colonized us the longest (300 years), America left the biggest impact on Filipino culture, beliefs, and institutions because not only did they change our government into a democratic one, they also targeted our educational systems and institutions and instilled Americal beliefs, teachings, and propaganda within GENERATIONS of Filipino students. They even referred to Filipinos as little brown Americans which just shows how far gone we were because of the colonialized system. Until the present, our educational systems have not changed and are still tainted with colonialism (using English to teach major subjects). Because of this, the glamour of the American dream and our bias towards literally anything American (like imported goods and even lighter "white" skin) still lives on today.
So yes we are no longer colonized but the effects of colonialization is still very much felt in the country and we cannot blame the vast majority of Filipinos because most are experiencing American biases subconsciously. It's a hard battle to overcome so don't talk about it so lightly as if you know everything.

@@chineedayrit6330 you don't have to be colonialized. You could just get over whatever color your skin is and be happy you're a human.
You could just judge a person by the quality of their character rather than the color of their skin. It's possible, I believe in you.

I'm also trying to bleach my skin but it didn't work. We are all beautiful just the way we are! 🤎
Btw I have a classmate in college before and she has brown skin as well and guess what? She's a model now.

she obviously didn't grew up in the Philippines because of her American accent which means she is an American citizen. Please lecture the people of America instead the people of the Philippines. You are not one of us.

It's true. I agree with you, I'm an immigrant born and raised from the Philippines and my daughter who is born here in the United States has no clue how in the Philippines view skin color the more white you are the better. She got that gen Alpha mindset.
