      @Dartm2 Рік тому +1

      Yeah exactly, this is cool to see what the M2 chip can do, but this needs to have a battery comparison test to be meaningful.
      Two reasons,
      1. Total package power draw of 20W will deplete a 52Wh battery in 2.5 hours. This doesn't happen with the M2 air even under heavy loads, therefore the these tests are short term averages and can't be extrapolated out to 2-3x as efficient for actual use.
      2. The real word efficiency needs to include non-package power consumption. Eg screen, WiFi etc.

    Good for the young man from Turkey!
    The lower power mode is phenomenal. It slows down the thermal cycling of the silicon and longer battery life. A great addition of the performance core for a slight boost. All and all a wonderful engineering solution. Apple really needs to publicize this feature. It is honestly the best of both worlds.

    • @andrewadkins5567
      @andrewadkins5567 Рік тому +3

      @@ahsoka6807 I agree with you on all accounts. I honestly don't know why Apple wouldn't shout this from every roof top. I wonder, with no proof mind you, if the base model was put into power saving mode if the single 256 ssd problem improves. The reason that I mention this is that a machine can only go as fast as you can feed it raw materials. The analogy is that if a rock crusher processes rock faster than the conveyor belt can deliver the rock it will be starved. If the rock crusher is slowed down to match the feed rate of the conveyor it will be full all of the time. It's not a theory, but a not bad analogy. I wonder if its worth performance testing in power saving mode with a 256 sdd and seeing where the performance goes. True the whole system will be slower, but the processor and ssd will be speed matched, perform a little better with the shared memory and run much cooler. The absence of thermal cycling means the main logic board as a whole and processor specifically lasts longer.

    That’s insane! I’m considering buying my first MacBook since 2008 (currently using an iPad Pro as my main machine). The M2 Air has been very tempting, but have been leaning towards the M1 Air with it’s still amazing performance and battery life to save some cash. But if this level of low power efficiency performance is unique to the M2, makes the decision that much more difficult… 😐. I’m guessing for most people in the market for such a device, you can keep the low power mode on permanently and unlikely to notice much (if any) decrease in performance. Great video as always!

After watching this video, I ran the Speedometer 2.0 test and saw 275 on low power and 339 on regular mode, so it does help with efficiency on the pro models as well. I've been using the Low Power Mode on my old 2018 13" MBP for quite some time now and been loving it. The intel MBP battery lasts barely an hour without it and the thing runs so hot it hardly usable. With the power mode I get ~3hours of battery life, less fan noise and heat and for my tasks on the Go I don't even notice a difference in perfomance.
    Now that's on an OG Intel "Throttlebook" - I can only imagine how awesome the performance will be with those M2 efficience cores.
    By the way, in the battery settings you can switch between battery mode an power supply and adjust the settings for the Low Power Mode individually. (if you like to switch to full power when you are connected but save some battery when on the Go)

    To be honest, the M series E core makes more sense than Intel’s “E-core”, intel’s hybrid P+E strategy seems like a have to do to compete with AMD’s high core account. I had an I9 12900H Asus scar 17, when I tried to disable all E core in bios the laptop just shut down and gave me a hardware error “CPU defect”. This means intel doesn’t give users an option to use P-core only or E-core only. The poor utilization makes 12th gen mobile look not very good to me.
    After I saw your testing on M2 low battery mode "full E-core mode", it is a must-have feature for all Macbook Air users due to the fan-less, P-core in M2 Air becoming a performance booster when you really need them under specific circumstances. I was thinking the M2 iPad pro will be a grill pan, after I saw this video, M2 iPad Pro totally makes sense for me now.

    After watching the video... i was thinking that it would be a nice touch if Apple would create some kind of software or a third party one that it would allow you to undervolt the Apple silicon for having the best performance/efficiency while having the cores running a lot below 100 degrees by tinkering with voltage instead of using the low power option and losing performance... but on the other hand i don't think that Apple owners know anything about hardware let alone on how to tinker with them... because if that was the case Apple would have released this kind of software already in my opinion...

    • @rohithmekala2608

      @vaggeliskosiatzis5487 Рік тому

      @@rohithmekala2608 it would nice though to have the best of both worlds for those who know how to tinker with it... because in my opinion, when you buy a product, you should be able to use it always at its full potential and not compromise a lot of its performance... that is the reason that windows laptops are a no go for me, not even a consideration even though AMD has close to similar performance plugged and unplugged by losing at most 10% to 15%...it's getting there in terms of efficiency, Intel is not even close of course... but when i saw the review of M1 i was impressed...same performance plugged and unplugged without thermal throttling, but it seems with M2 they are going backwards again to Intel era products... in my opinion, a little bit of undervolt will solve the thermal throttling issue... and you will actually have the product that you paid for..

    • @smbdcry
      @smbdcry Рік тому

      That would be a perfect solution… instead of thermal throttling.. software tinkering it never reach the stage of thermal throttling and getting much lower performance in the first place. Right now, it’s like, don’t give a fuck to a car until it’s broken on the road, paying extra more for fixing it.
