I learned so much from this experience. Pay more now or pay twice later, but being a college student back then, I rarely had money. I am getting back into digital arts "slowly". I own a iMac at home I use for general everyday task. For my laptop to purchase, I am looking at a M2 or M3 16Ram and 1TB or a M1 Pro 16Ram and 1TB. Thoughts on helping me choose for the long run? I also understand no technology stays forever, but I am looking to get atleast 4-5 years out of this.
Futureproofing a Mac.... whats the lifespan Apple gives to its products? I mean, how many years of updates and service they gonna provide? This is from google AI: Apple supports most MacBook models for nearly 10 years after purchase, with the exception of hardware service for obsolete products. This means that MacBooks will receive operating system updates for about 8-10 years, after which Apple will no longer support the software. However, Mac laptops may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period of up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability.

Hey there Max! Absolutely loved this video! I have a 2018 MacBook Pro 16gb 256 SSD which has served me very well. I am a photographer and teacher and I’m going travelling next year in a van through Europe! My MacBook Pro is starting to lose battery strength and basic Lightroom use drains the battery. Working on the go with my photography, I don’t know will this be practical! Would you advise trading up for the MacBook Air M1? My own is pre M chip so I don’t know what to expect! Is the MacBook Air good for photography editing? Thanks for any help!
M1 Air is still quite powerful, but to get better future proofing, you should go for atleast M2 Air. I won't recommend the M1 Air now. moreover now that you will use Apple silicon for the first time, you will be blown away by especially the battery life and how cool it remains in everyday tasks. I am a Computer Science Engineer and also use it for Photo and Video editing on Adobe software.
@@shudderranz5919wow thank you so much! I honestly think I won’t know myself with how good the M chip is in comparison to my current intel i5, exciting times ahead 🙌
Hey man, does the geminos dual monitor only work on the M3 or does it also work on M1?.
what about update and support? M1 is released in 2020, for how long apple will support it?
+1
probably 3-4 more years.
6-7 years ...which is probably till 2027 or even longer
I upgraded just for the bigger screen. Well worth the price.
Max thank you for the content , do you know when the new M3 Mac mini is coming out ??? Thanks
Battery doesn't take over an hour on the M1. It takes about an hour. Battery still last all day.
Most iPads are more expensive than the M1 MBA, especially if you buy a keyboard for it
So true
Also they’re limited to iOS App Store, as of now
Please apple bring back the rose gold color!
True!
no bro..rose gold looks dull..I would rather prefer starlight...mine is space grey...
Recently got a macbook air m1 16gb/512gb for 650 euros
A steal compared to the m3!
Add a better powerbrick (gan of 67w) and a thermal-pad mod (I run in energy saving mode when mobile anyway, so no burned legs).
And I basically have close to an M3 for half the money.
The battery performance was on the latest macOS on both machines?
After watching literally 100s of videos on the M1 , I say buy it . Literally over anything. . It works .
Game benchmarks?
Hi Max is air heatsink aluminum? Or copper? Or just iron?
The M3 is using a new smaller 3nm chip. It's like a version 1! Just like how the M2 is an improved version of the M1.
So I think the M4 with more cores will obviously be a step up, working out the bugs of the M3 (over-heating?). So, skip the M3!
M3 isn’t overheating. This dude messed up as he reasoned lower voltages were an indication of throttling. They aren’t as the M3 chip is 3nm and doesn’t require as high a voltage. The M3 runs tests @ 30% lower voltage, slightly lower temps at 20% higher performance over the M2. I like the channels but this dude makes a lot of mistakes.
I would skip the m4 to be fair, because I’m sure the m5 will be better
@@MsSjaakvaak , eu acho o M6,.. 😁
What about the 2020 MacBook Pro m1 one hell of a machine mines still as fast as it was brand new.
7 years later I’m still using my MacBook Pro intel 2017 😢
still better than any windows laptop tho

Great review; I’ve been wanting to compare the two as I’m looking for new laptops for my kids. Thank you!
I have had an M1 for years. I was considering an upgrade. You helped me decide I can save the money for now thanks!
My M1 MBA (8/256) is running MacOS Monterey. Should I update or will it get slower?
On Ventura it’s the same. On Sonoma don’t now
I have upgraded mine and it is same fast as before.
Hope they offer the M1 Air on Amazon.
Why do you want it on Amazon? I mean Walmarts and Micro Centers are everywhere…
@@anetizen6404 I'm not in the US/North America.
They were on there last year but now Walmart is the only one selling them.
Silly question but is my original base M1 air the same as this one.
Yes
If you want to use dual monitors and a 1080p web camera, yes.
Otherwise, nope.
Between a M1 16gb air and a M3 8gb air, which would you get?
16 GB M1 for certain.
Would you get apple care for an M1 today, is it worth it? Im facing this exact choice and its is future proofing that leads me to the M1 actually. Apple has allowed word out that they will bring OLED to their macbook like in 2026 (for the pro) and the air in 2027. Whatever that future macbook looks like is going to change a lot, so a reasonable gap filler for me is the M1
Won't an M1 Macbook Air bought new in 2024 only have another 2 years of Operating System updates/renewals, or asked differently, in comparison, will the M3 Macbook Air have 4 years more of Apple Operating System updates/renewals?
Apple usually do 8-10 years
@@anetizen6404 I have an iMac 27" with 32 Gig of Ram and 1TB Fusion Drive (128 SSD) that was bought in 2016, but built late 2015 that has Monterey OS from 2021 and the updates end in October this year I think. So it only got 5 to 6 years of OS renewals and the security updates were about 8 years. So how many years left does the M1 Macbook Air have left for OS renewals? Not sure how long my iMac 27" will go on working for after the security updates finish later this year? I only use the computer for internet browsing FerrariChat, UA-cam, Ebay, Facebook and IG. Perhaps my as new iMac 27", which has a great display, will be okay for my uses for a while yet?
you are correct, probably we will get 2-3 more years of support.
Max your reviews are always unique and great.👍👍
With some affordable deals on the 2019 Mac Pro on eBay now, please make a video on if they'd be worth it now.
@maxtech my question is I have MacBook Pro by intel 2020. How better is M3 MacBook Air than mine?
it's about 3.5x better overall if you're talking about raw specifications and performance.
A lot, Intel CPUs weren't very good.
Love the wedge shape of my M1. The average user will not notice a performance difference between the two. They will notice an extra $400 in their pocket. M1 hands down.
M3 will get much morr resale value and will be 100% supported by updates in the future, thats worth 400usd for me. Also better webcam and sound quality for video calls. Got the m3
@@LaSalviaBodysurfresale value is not important for me cuz I never sell my macbooks. I use macs for web browsing and documents so future proofing is also meaningless for me. Thus M1 is my choice. I can use the extra $400 to buy a 10th gen Ipad.
What about someone like me that wants to upgrade from a MacBook Pro with the intel i9, will the MacBook Air with M3 be sufficient enough? I do 4k video editing.
You probably want to look at the MacBook Pro with the M3 Pro chips or Ultra
So the air m3 is faster then the m1 pro?
I will be interested in changing my MacBook Air M1 with the new one when the base model has 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of unified memory
512mb of storage? Are we back to 2004?
@@nikolagvozdenovic940 GB, obviously
Where is the 699 m1 air link?
does m3 have headphone jack ?

Do you know how long Walmart will sell the M1 MacBook for? I don’t need it right now, I need it in like August but I don’t want Walmart to sell out of them.
I’ve been wondering the same thing. I keep putting off on buying it but doesn’t seem like they’re going out any time soon.
Don't let morons convince you to buy something more expensive than an M1. They know NOTHING about hardware and are trying to sound smart and helpful in comment sections. Unless you already specifically know than an M1 Air is just not enough for you, then AN M1 AIR IS PERFECTLY ADEQUATE FOR YOUR NEEDS AND WILL KEEP GETTING UPDATES UNTIL 2029-2030
My new M3 Air's Geekbench 6 CPU score was almost double my 2019 iMac 3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB
However when I ran the GPU test my i9 scored 49996 in the OpenCL test, while my M3 scored 31827. That does not make sense to me. Is the i9’s Pro Vega that much better than the M3’s video?? Metal scores were even worse for the M3 at 49285 vs 73292 for the i9. What gives?
my only concern with buying the m1 MBA (now that m3 is out) is will apple stop giving updates for the m1 and will the laptop become slow or redundant after 4-5 years of use? so should i get the m1 or m2 or m3?
the m1 mba has been out gor 4 years already since it was produced in 2024, its also discontinued due to the release of the m3, while the m1 is still reliable the m3 will be supported for longer.
I'm a backend developer where i run simualtions of thousands of users using our software. I had a m2 pro but it was second hand, now using the m1 air, that i got stock of. There isnt any difference to my work really, there are other limitations that can factor and you need to know all of them before signling down issues to just one things
I’m looking for m1 cause my previous laptop cannot download new apps and won’t update via iCloud
And this is called : an honest review guys! Thank you.
1:13 what tools do you use for monitoring stats on your macs e.g. CPU/GPU / Temps?

What is this thing about being Future proof?
I was almost convinced to buy air M1 but saw some thread on reddit saying M1 will stop receiving updates soon.
First tell me how these updates work and what will happen if we stop receiving updates (i m a window user and never faced anything like updates are stopped and it caused a trouble but don't know about mac updates and importance)
Can anyone tell me exactly how many years we can go with M1 if we buy it before mid 2024😮??

Should i get macbooc air M3 or Ipad pro for university (ill study pharmacy)
iPad + Hackintosh
advice from M1 MBA base user for 2 years
Could you please make a video comparing... the SSD upgrade in the M3 model to 512 vs 16GB RAM upgrade? Am asking because this time there is a high speed internal SSDs and so the swap from SSD would be much better performing and at par with the 16GB RAM performance. Also the 512 SSD model often go on a discount at big retail outlets. Thks.
I see you every where on top of search (comparission tests) keep up the good work 🤩
Would be cool to see you run Topaz AI software on these machines and compare their performance in that.
Eu também estou querendo ver isso, 😭.
Quite honestly, any Walmart shopper who has been buying $500 Windows laptops and "just needs a new computer" will be utterly shocked by the performance of the M1Air.
Fair opinion. No more "just browsing and watching 4K video", because Intel N100 is capable to do that, it's extremely cheap, you can get less than $150 for 16GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD.
For my needs, 16GB model will be future proof, just like my M1 MBA 16GB of RAM.
Not exactly
I’m fine with 8 and I study Ocean Science and AI.
If you really want a 16GB laptop on a budget there are a lot of Windows alternatives available as well
@anetizen6404 That's what I'm talking about, M1 MBA 8 GB still mooore more better than Intel N100 processes on a budget laptop / mini pc.
I’m hitting the memory wall with 8gb in Photoshop. It just can’t handle decently large images. Waiting for the M3 Mac Studios now. May opt for an M2 Studio if prices drop and will up it to 1tb for the faster SSD.
Adobe and other creator devs advise a minimum of 16GB but recommend 32GB for photo and video editing. This applies to Windows machines as well.
Time to go PC?
just got he macbook air m1 about a month ago and u know what, it's a banger, no regrets
I only regret not getting extra ram on my M1. Decided to wait it dies before switching but can’t manage to take him down. 😅
😂
Finally the comparison that I was waiting for. Thanks Max
I was all Apple a few years ago but for "reasons" i stopped. (just kept phone and ipad) Currently running iPhone 13 and recently upgraded from iPad Air (gen4) to M2 iPad pro. In the past i had the MB Air and 27" iMac. I wanted to get back into Apple computers. Considered the Mac Mini but decided to get a refurb base model M2 MB Air. Currently expected delivery is tomorrow.
I quit windows years ago (run AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and AMD Radeon 6750xt with Fedora 39 Linux)
Was a big gamer but not so much anymore. Linux can game when i have the urge but I am also liking the simpler games in Apple Arcade. Main computer use now is Video/surfing/budget tasks.
Also study (language learning)
What about m1 pro vs m3 air???? 🤔🤔🤔
Go with M1 pro. Multi Core performance is much better on the Pro and it comes with 16 GB of RAM.
Why not spend some more for M2 Pro
@@anetizen6404 Real world performance between the two are very similar and not with the extra money in my opinion.
Excellent Performance ❤
I bought mine used for $400. I can't be more happy
Shall I guess? My guess is, it's only worth $300 more. Everyone has different use cases but really what is the task the M3 excels at? Landscape and home architectural design? To me, it seemed like the M1 was already a powerhouse for video editing.
Still using my m1. Right now im exporting 1080p video in Final Cut, while editing 354 sony a7r4 raw files in camera raw... Hmmm.
I bought a almost maxed out m1 macbook air 16gb ram 8 core gpu and 1tb ssd refurb excellent condition for only 799$
I'm going to be grabbing an M2 Air. I don't need the minimal differences the M3 offers up, whereas the M1 doesn't come with an option for extra RAM. This puts the M2 in a bit of a sweet spot :D
Huh
M2 extra ram cost how much? 200 as well?
What is this new accent? Really nice, Professional 😊
m1 ftw 🎉❤
Man I bought m1 back in day and they released the m2 like few weeks later and I didn't notice it on time to return and rebuy for the same price pretty much lol.
The key differentiator for me is the display size. I need a 15" display for work. So no comparison with the M1. Savings over 15" M2 are minimal. Apple forces me to spend more money once again...
When you make it so good that nobody wants to buy upgrades
2014 intel macbook pro user the M1 8GB blows it out of water unfortunatly but fortunatly for ppl new its the best laptop for the bang for the bucks.
I bought my Mac Air M1 in 2020, which is still worth it. I use my M1 for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsing, developing software, and occasionally to play Asphalt 9...Of course, it begins to look a little bit slower in comparison to M3 but it is good enough. My battery life is 88 % I gonna wait 2 or 3 years more before shifting it, regards !!!
How’s the battery on M1 if you update to the latest os?
@@JimZarasOfficial Hi, I installed the last Mac OS and my battery health is 88% however, the last version of Mac OS Sonoma uses a little bit more power, and the battery remains a little bit less
I watch this video with my Mac M1 with the Spedometer 2.0 benchmark I have a score of 480 this benchmark doesn't mean anything it mainly depends on the internet connection
I have a M1 Pro MBP and a M3 MBA. M3 is very very capable! And is very much on par with the M1 Pro Chip. The Air only falls off in more demanding tasks (to be expected)
its definitely the best bang for the buck MacBook. only downside is the screen size feels small for a main computer.
You can use your iPhone like a webcam for the M1
Do you believe in future proofing a Macbook?
My current dilemma is I am getting my second MacBook as a responsible adult. My first one was almost ten years ago. A 2013 15inch MacBook Pro 8gb and 512 storage in film school. I did not know anything about it in film school back then, but my college only operated with Macintosh.
I maxed out the ram and storage year after year until it wrecked itself in 2016 the complete broke itself physically (the battery burst and the trackpad cracked out).
This is from google AI:
Apple supports most MacBook models for nearly 10 years after purchase, with the exception of hardware service for obsolete products. This means that MacBooks will receive operating system updates for about 8-10 years, after which Apple will no longer support the software. However, Mac laptops may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period of up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability.
I’d say M2 Pro 14” or M3 14”
Remember not to spend a lot of money in speccing up lol
