There is no universal 4 kinds of watches for a collection. A collection can have a theme. I remember James Dowling, Nick Foulkes debating at Dubai Watch Week. One of them had a collection with the theme: Watches that ruined their respective companies. Now that is a brilliant theme to have, watches that managed due to various reasons to ruin the company that made them. A WatchBox without a theme is just a WatchBox with watches. And let’s be honest, most of us are just enthusiasts and not collectors. And that is totally fine.
For GMT, the dial needs to be readable, my first luxury was a JLC Geographic, the world timer disc was getting too small to read as was the second time zone sub dial, so l sold it after more than 20+ years owning it. Now l have my Parmigiani Hemisphere with large second time zone subdial. My Reverso duo is even better, flipping the dials is so much fun and very readable. Other types of watches that are useful would be, water resistant watches for rainy days, chronograph for timing anything, short intervals can be measured by dive watch bezel, like cooking time. For me l make excuses to collect different types, German, Japanese, chrono, GMT, time only, integrated bracelet, etc. Haha.
I couldn'nt agree more. The reverso is the classy GMT. I think dual time is all you need. A 12 hr bezel on a dressy diver is just as good imo. But chronograph worth their salt should have a 12hr totalizer otherwise it's better to use a dive bezel
@@watchartsci from what I remember a Sellita SW-200(the equivalent to a 2824), (believe it or not, one would expect an equivalent to an ETA 2892 but not this time). This is why cost of these are low, don’t forget these watches were used (innovative for the era) during the Vietnam conflict & used by airmen. Strangely the 2824 hasn’t been exploited to other use than diver watches 🤷🏻♂️ , the 2892 has at least 5 variants of itself which I’m aware of!
Has any watch company sorted out how to deal with summer time switching on a GMT? For example northern hemisphere goes into summer time when southern hemisphere moves into winter, so relative time zones can move two hours
Cool video-new to this hobby-Just retired from law enforcement in So Cal-I know you also taught Criminal Justice at SDSU-what entry rolex or another watch would you recommend as a starter?
Welcome to this crazy world of watch collecting. My suggestion is to take time to research. A statement that permeates this hobby is that it's a personal journey. Your watch should say something about you and your lifestyle. Not just the popular brand. Take a month or so, and look at other brands, especially the independents.
Hi Barnaby...I was in the Sociology Dept. at SDSU (1977-92) and taught Research Methods, Criminology and Delinquency and the sociology of CJ. Spent a lot of time with SDPD on research-sexual assault; gangs. As a Newby to the hobby, patience is the key to get a watch you want (at a good price for your budget). My suggestion is to look for quality and only get watches you'd want to wear. Join a UA-cam watch group-you are welcome to joint High Horology Lounge-a group that finds quality in horology. Take care, Bill
1. Paw Patrol Smartwatch (for tunes and eternal style) $7.99 at Walmart 2. Casio F-91 (for rebelling against the state) $12.95 on Amazon 3. Rolex Submariner (for da bitchez) $10,000 and a 2 hour frottage session with the authorized dealer 4. Orient Ray II (for when you're feeling too scared and poor to wear the Rolex) $120 on eBay
Recommending watches depends on the individual. That being said, 4 styles of watches would be; dress, GMT/Dual time, Diver/Sports and a Beater
Here are the four:
Travel watches with gmt; watches with chronograph movements; daily beater or a diver; a formal watch
That's a good quad Webbezzy, thanks. Take care, Bill

By the way, you said it’s been the coolest summer so far in Connecticut! I should say the summer hasn’t started yet!
I know Webbezzy...we're in for it starting tomorrow...90's, 100's. Stay cool, Bill

Sounds good Johnny. What movement does the Airman have? Take care, Bill

I don't know Cubatea, but that would certainly be a handy one to have! Take care, Bill
