What a wonderful, beautiful collection you have! When you are young, you have 50 years ahead to enjoy them again. Most of my books come from charity shops and I return them at once, except for the "keepers", which I'd like to read again one day. I've found many bargains; Collections of Lawrence, Greene, Orwell for £1 or less. Some books are brand new or unread. BTW I am guessing that English is not your native language? Anyway, reading in a second language is a great way to improve, as I find with French.
my favorite collections are by penguin. they include many notes, introduction, and other helpful sources! they help understand the story and you dont struggle as much. i love classics and i read them 80% of the time
Sons and Lovers is probably one of the greatest novels of the Twentieth century. Although Lawrence's reputation has largely been related with the controversial Lady Chatterley's Lover, Lawrence was in his creative best in Sons and Lovers. The tale of an English family from the mining community, the story is chiefly about Paul, who is an autobiographical representation of Lawrence himself. The Freudian aspects of the novel took it beyond any other novel of the author's time. I admire that you have it in your collection. Apart from that, who can negate the brilliance of Stoker's gothic masterpiece Dracula? And finally the best of them all, Wuthering Heights - the only novel of Emily Bronte - probably the greatest English novel of the Victorian era. The passionate Heathcliff, who was one of the most passionate lovers of all times along with his satanic qualities. Thank You madam for sharing this fantastic collection of yours with the world.
OMG! You make me want to go to a cabin by myself for 6 months and read nothing but classics. :) You have the most beautiful books. I think Wuthering Heights is my favourite cover in that series although you're right Les Mis is pretty fab too! I actually don't keep that many classics on my bookshelves because I know I can easily get copies if I want so I'd rather keep harder-to-find titles on my shelves. Great video!
Thank you for a wonderful video. I always enjoy watching you and listening to which books you are reading and recommending. Would you do me a favor? I recently read the Norwegian classic "Kristin Lavransdatter" and adored it. Do you have a favorite Danish classic which has been translated into English that you can recommend?
As usual, a great video. I collect Persephone classics myself and am reading one a month (am now on No. 27). The bookmarks are only available if you buy from the Persephone shop in London (I think) and also the Persephone editions with illustrated covers, do not have coloured endpapers. Please carry on with the videos. I am in awe of your fluency and wide reading.
Great video 😊 I'm sorry that your clothbound editions are so fragile. I have Jane Eyre and Pride and Predjudice in Barnes and Nobles flexi bound edition and although they're beautiful, I'm afraid they are a bit on the fragile side. I was wondering: is War and Peace good? I saw it at my library but am a bit intimidated by its size lol!
Helene, I love the orange striped Penguin paperbacks. Are you able to tell me the publishing take? I"m trying to track down where to purchase them. Hoping they are available from Book Depository & that I pick the correct ones! LOVE your book tube channel!
Nice collection. Have you ever seen the Borders Classics editions from 2006? I love those and still collect them off ebay/amazon. I always loved the cover art and the text/pages they used were always easy on the eyes. Google 'borders classics 2006' to see what I'm talking about
Your class is are very inspiring! I have Anna Karenina selected to read in April. I'm looking forward to it and apprehensive at the same time. Hope my expectations don't lead to disappointment:)
Hey Helene, thank you for the video! I was thinking about reading some classics, but I'm not sure what collection should I get. I'm aware the Penguin Clothbounds are pretty fragile, at least on the designs, but are Penguin English Library well made? Do you think they will last? At the end of the day they are paperbacks, unlike the clothbounds, I would prefer getting something to be read over the years, so I'm not sure about which collection should I chose. Hope you can help
hi! I have two Penguin English Library books and they’re pretty fragile imo. the pages are very thin and the covers kinda fade and bend very easily. my copy of wuthering heights is not in the best state anymore, but I do have to say I don’t really mind because I like books with a kind of worn look, like you can see that they’ve been read a lot. Then I also own Jane Eyre which is in a much better state but that’s solely because I haven’t gotten to it yet. So anyway if you want a book that stays good as new for a long time I wouldn’t recommend these editions but they’re very pretty nonetheless.
Should I buy this please help me, Kindle Oasis E-reader with Black Leather Charging Cover, 6'' High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Built-in Light, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, but it costs £330 on Amazon!, I want this because it's battery life is alot longer the only problem is that it's expensive!, so I thought I should ask you because I have seen your Kindle review video wich made me want to buy a kindle,BTW you inspired me to read books....well digitally, anyway I love your videos!.
I am the same with the penguin cloth bound classics. They are glued rather than sewn and the paint on the front rubs off just from being held. No thanks.
I’ve heard from many people that the Penguin clothbound books are bad quality and fall apart or get worn out really easily, it’s like they’re only made to collect and not at all to read and that sucks :/ beautiful but I won’t be buying any. Love the Penguin English Library edition though!
Jeffrey Kaufmann I’m still struggling thorough War and Peace. I’ve ran into some of those boring parts and I think some stuff is hard to follow. I hope that’s not just me 🙂
Not necessarily. Classics are books that have stood the test of time and "Classics" of literature are a more recent phenomenon outside the West. And N. America has hardly any Classics at all. There are many Classics that don't fit this definition though: Sun Tzu "The Art of War," "100 Years of Solitude," "The Bhagavad Gita," "The Epic of Gilgamesh" I suppose could qualify, and others. Do you have any favorites?
What a wonderful, beautiful collection you have!

How a book feels in my hand, the texture if the paper are all important to me. Thank you fir discussing those aspects
i love these classic book videos.. could watch them all day!

The editing in this video was amazing. I didn't even notice the sun til the very end. Nicely done! Gina
I bought Pride and Prejudice from this collection and every time I hold it, the paint from the peacocks fade 😕 Does this happen only to me ?
Yeah the books need to be somewhere colder. Heat messes up the covers.
Instablaster...
These day I am reading JANE EyRR and GRET ExPECTATIOnS in same time .thank you for your remark about them
You're so nice and genuine. Thank for being like that! Keep with the good work! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your books are beautiful, love them! Thankyou for sharing them
So, so many pretty books!
I know, right? :)
That Madame Bovary edition is gorgeous!
The Picture of Dorian Gray is amazing. Mariana is one of my favorites. Classics is one of my most read genres.
They are gorgeous, I love them. I wonder if you would recommend a special book cover for Jane Eyre?
One of my favorite authors us AJ Cronin. I wonder why he isn’t included in some lists.

War and Peace is okay but I remember it being very confusing and dragging - although it has its good scenes as well :)
Ok thanks for your input😊

What do you mean by “crumble”?
My wishlist for Persephone books is ridiculously long. I'm going to need a bigger bookcase! 😂
Your class is are very inspiring! I have Anna Karenina selected to read in April. I'm looking forward to it and apprehensive at the same time. Hope my expectations don't lead to disappointment:)
Apologies for the typo. Class should really read as collection.
Good Morning Dear...i hope in future if passible you post books on screen its more easy to read book title.....

Miss Pettigrew is such a treat!
Do any of these have any illustrations? Thank you :)
Where are u from ?

Big fan of Dorian Gray too! 💓
The grey editions with the beautiful inside covers how can i find them?? How do they call them??
Persephone classics
What about The Old Curiosity Shop ? This is the saddest of all novels by Dickens.
I really like Charles Dickens, but I agree with you - I'm not a huge fan of Great Expectations!
I’m currently reading War and Peace and Jane Eyre.Hopefully I can stay interested in War and Peace .
crystall31cl I love Jane Eyre but I think War and Peace has a lot of boring parts
Jeffrey Kaufmann I’m still struggling thorough War and Peace. I’ve ran into some of those boring parts and I think some stuff is hard to follow. I hope that’s not just me 🙂
crystall31cl I think one has to like Russian history and Napoleon history to love War and Peace
Oh, I don't know any of these authors from the last collection.
All Persephone’s books have a bookmark of the inside cover with them .
I have Moby Dick in the Wordsworth editions
Your accent is great
👍☺
❤️
Does a “classic”by definition have to be written by a white European or North American writer?
Not necessarily. Classics are books that have stood the test of time and "Classics" of literature are a more recent phenomenon outside the West. And N. America has hardly any Classics at all. There are many Classics that don't fit this definition though: Sun Tzu "The Art of War," "100 Years of Solitude," "The Bhagavad Gita," "The Epic of Gilgamesh" I suppose could qualify, and others. The Picture of Dorian Gray deserved a better cover

I'd recommend you to paint your nails so they look even.
