Reviewing Little Wars TV's Ravenfeast - Getting Re-Started In Historical Wargaming

- I've been inspired to dive back into some Historical wargaming and hobby after reading a bunch of books and watching various TV shows. SAGA and the age of Vikings, Saxons and Normans has always captured my attention and so I thought I'd dive back in with that. A good starting point with the rules being FREE and it not needing lots of miniatures seemed to be Ravenfeast from Little Wars TV. So, I thought I'd give my thoughts on it!

I think Ravenfeast is a neat game and it opens up a lot of options for people wanting to dive into Historical wargaming or, like me, looking to dive back in and start without too much hassle. Make sure to tell me what you think of Ravenfeast in the comments down below!

It is a good introduction system, I have used it with my students and they loved it.
Ah great to hear!
Because of it's simplicity, you can tweak the rules very easily. I've been a minis gamer for decades and I love this ruleset.
Yeah - it's a solid set of rules for folks wanting to get stuck into the period and play around with it
If you liked what I do and fancy giving me a little donation, a Ko-Fi is always welcome ko-fi.com/becauseofdragons
I've demo'ed this came at a convention. Good as an intro or a multiplayer pickup game. But you need scenarios, Geld points and Rune Card in my opinion. In a stand up fight the game tends to play itself a bit when two shieldwalls collide.
Yeah it's certainly got a great place as an introduction and then you can go deeper into other games. I think it's a good base to start a warband before games like The Barons' War or SAGA. Deffo need the Geld and Rune Cards, especially for me who is returning to this era rather than being new to it.
@@BecauseOfDragons I think the next good pick after Ravenfeast would be Blood Eagle. It has the same model count, it's also set in the same time period but has a chunkier combat mechanic. It also offers a unit creator that is far deeper, because the weapons and armour have quite an impact on how a character work.
@@michamalinowski8015 Ah much appreciated for the tip. I do have that game to hand as well (picked it up at Salute years ago!) so will give it a look!
I just starting watching Last Kingdom and immediatly wanted to wargame in that era. Ravenfeast was suggested as a ruleset in a facebook group, so I downloaded them.
You and Loyd are my favourite guys on OTT so I was pleased and surprised to find your review on the ruleset.
I have some experience in different wargames systems - so what would you recommend as a more advanced set for Vikings vs. Saxons? I don´t like SAGA because of the battleboard-mechanic.
Keep up the good work, always a pleasure to hear you talking about hobby-stuff.
Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to comment. If you're looking for the next step up with a bit more complexity, I'd recommend Blood Eagle from the Ministry Of Gentlemanly Warfare. It's still got a solid skirmish-based system but with a lot more nuance to the rules - theministryofgentlemanlywarfare.wordpress.com/blood-eagle/
You've also got Conquest which takes it up a notch miniatures-wise but still has lots of ways to customise your force and go with different Dark Age armies. You will need the core The Barons' War rules to play though warhost.online/store/conquest
Hope that helps!
It’s a great little set of rules helping get my youngster into it. It’s great after about 2 games your 8yo turns you over 😂
Hah ace - yeah I have seen a lot of folks saying it's perfect for getting the little ones interested in the hobby. Good for igniting the passion!
i was literally looking at this the other day from littlewarsTV site and their series of linked 1066 games.. got to be done in 6mm ;0
I think it would be ace to see more folks recreating those 6mm clashes. I was tempted by the Forged In Battle 15mm Dark Age stuff as well actually
@@BecauseOfDragons i bet it would work well with 6mm on 20mm bases with a Westeros Theme too
I really enjoyed the 6mm series on LWTV. I want to try some more historicals, if you fancy a game at PG?
The 6mm series was very cool indeed and yeah, Historicals is properly up their on my to-do list at the moment. Unfortunately, I'm up in Stafford now but if I come back Phoenix way I will have to see if we can set something up
