Great tutorial. Made a decent version of this to introduce my eldest son (6) to Ravenfeast.
Also, toothpicks and lolly pop sticks are a great substitute for balsa wood.

little hobby tip : Where I live it is very hard to find foam core, but there is an excess of cork sheet - this works really well as a substitute.

@@LittleWarsTV I wish to compliment the video it gives a good representation on techniques for making model houses, but I also wish to point out some issues with the artistic depiction you make. All the serious reconstructions of Norse long houses (I don’t call them viking houses since there is no such thing as a viking I will explain later 😊) have some differences from what you made, and one of them is that all planking is vertical, there is no horizontal planking.
Another distinct visual que is that the reconstructions have an arched ridge that tapers upwards terminating at the smoke hole, this is to facilitate easier evacuation of the smoke, and provide better ventilation. Fun trivia fact, the word window comes from the old norse word vindauga that translates into “wind eye” or more figuratively “wind door”/“wind hole”.
Thirdly the roof should be made to look like wooden roof tiles, since there is very little use of thatch here in the north where there is heavy snow fall, they don’t mix well 😉. A substitute would be to depict sod roof, which was more common in Iceland, since wood is scares on that island, also they would substitute most of the side planking with stone, which you can use as a visual cue for better immersion or geographical referencing. For the sod roof you could use teddy fur not clue it down but instead get it to be fluffy and raised, and paint it green.
Admittedly this is a harder construction challenge than straight lines since curved lines need much more fit and finish to look good, and making wooden roof tile look can be a bit more work than gluing teddy fur to the roof, but I figured you guys may wish to know in case you were to make a long house 2.0, or maybe showcase more advanced constructions techniques 😊
Now why “there are no Vikings”, simply put viking in Norse times, was a verb not a noun, hence you “went viking”, but you were never “a viking”, but for the sake of simplicity one must bow to the common vernacular usage of the word ☹. And lastly thank you for the good content you guys make.

Before the watered down glue dries, take an old comb and make downward strokes from the roof ridge. This caused the fur to look more like thatch.

Great video. I made Rohan houses very similar to this but I cut the teddy bear fur in strips and overlapped them on the roof to give it a little more depth and the look as if the builders applied it in layers. I am working on some tutorials for asian themed buildings since thats where my miniature ranges hail from so hopefully I will get those posted on my channel in the near future. In the current world of Covid, my friends and I can't really gather together to game. Is it possible to use Ravenfeast with say something like Roll20? If so, would you happen to have any suggestions to resources for making Viking age battle maps?

The measurements are off. If the house is 5 inches wide and 4 inches tall (which they don't state) there is no roof slant can be 3.5 inches. when I CAD it out the slant is more like 4.5 inches.
Does anyone have good measurements?

I'd suggest one modification, make a full roof beam, skipping the smoke hole. It makes it easier for the sides to be thatched properly and adds more interest to the entire piece
Try steel wool for the thatch. More realistic then teddy bear fur. Mod Podge is better than watered down PVA for your teddy bear fur.
Great idea on the steel wool. Might be a bit rough to drybrush, but I'm sure the finished product would look excellent.
For bit of durability, use pins at the corners prior to glue.

You don't wanna use foam board. That stuff warps in time due to moisture. It's more expensive but look for material known as gator foam board or gator board. That stuff has no equal.
Very true, if left untreated foam core board will warp. If you glue wood and cardboard elements to it like we did here, though, it will not warp over time. Thanks for the tip on gator board! We will search for that!
@@LittleWarsTV When we had our family business, we would go out to a place out on the eastern shore to get the stuff from a company called Harbor Sales out in Sudlersville, MD. We use to get full 4x8 sheets and use those as bases for our o gauge buildings.

This is disgusting! Think of all those teddy bears in those teddy bear farms being bred just for their fur! I also sometimes see that you use their actual flesh just to represent smoke in battles!
