- We made the bulk of my first cut hay, and it is overripe since we weren't able to get a proper window to get our hay made!

CURRENT SCHEDULE
Expect a new video every Wednesday and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a UA-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Ryan,
I appreciate how you explain the WHY and HOW you are doing things - and the alternative choices you did not choose. Reminds me of the constant decision making and many choices you are making constantly. Lots of stress! Thanks
Seeing the bale tubes sitting there is just great😉👍 the wrapper is the best solution for wet bales😁👍
Hi from oz ryan. Starting to see the light i see. Congradulations. Early in my business (mid 90's) I was o ly contractor doing wrapped bales and one seasons was wet spring. Storm front every 3 to 4 days. By wrapping we got about 20 jobs finished in 4 weeks (about 3000 bales) and nobody got ANY hay baled in that month. Makes wrapped bales good insurance policy for next winter quality feed.
Thanks Ryan!
A very good video! Thank you Ryan and the entire crew at Kuster farms!
Mighty work Everybody, that will make for some nice silage👌👍🙏😎
You call it wet hay, here in New Zealand we would just call it silage if it’s wrapped, hay is just hay stored in a shed, Great video keep it up
Thanks for the video
Have you guys ever considered a self propelled hay conditioner/mower? I see a lot of farms use them and was just curious if it had ever crossed your mind. They seem more efficient all around despite the price tag on them.
Hopefully this year is a high yield for alfalfa, i know corn is very tall this year which is good news!
I'm going to bet you still don't miss chopping and filling silo's. You can move a lot of tons with a bale wrapper, and without 3 wagons or trucks and 6 people.👍
Great Video Ryan, your baleage system seems pretty smooth, thanks for sharing
great video! Thanks for sharing.:)
Ryan I feel like the wrapper is loosing productivity everytime it has to stop and wait for another bale. Do they make an extension so you can add one more bale to help reduce the stop/start time while your grabbing the next bale?
Silagebales are good feed aswell🤩🤩
I know nothing about farming, so forgive the question. Is it better to wrap it as opposed to storing the bails in some type of container or silo?
For dry hay bales anything that keeps the bales dry is good. For wet hay bales keeping air out is necessary; they need to be wrapped to preserve quality. Wet hay also can have the nasty habit of combusting.
Came past your folks place today. Whats up with all the solar panels near their place?
Hey, Ryan...nice haircut!
Big windrows!
I'm 74yo. I grew up on a family farm with a 40 head cow/calf operation. Some years, we'd put in 2,000 small square bales for our winter feed. We had a pretty big garden for 8 of us. Daddy worked public work in construction. So, as the oldest, the farming and gardening responsibilities were on me while he was gone for the day. I started haying at 10yo. Cutting, raking, baling, throwing onto the wagon for my 8yo brother. Then Daddy would help us put it in the barn when he got home. When we could schedule the pickup for a weekend, Daddy would get a crew together. I never minded the hard work. I appreciated that Daddy had confidence in me to get the job done. What I got most disturbed about was working around the rain. When we needed rain on the garden, we didn't need it on the hay. But, ain't that the way of farming?😊 Then I got into construction and don't you know, I was still trying to schedule around the weather.😂 Good video. Thanks for sharing.
👍👍👏👏🇺🇲🇺🇲
I enjoyed hearing about your upbringing on the farm and as a 67 year old retired farmer my upbringing was very similar. Take care and have a good rest of your week 👍
How much is that wrapper saving you in lost hay?
Good stuff
How come u dont put 5 bales down the center on top?
Hay Ryan!!!!
How many acres of alfalfa do yall bale? Thanks Ryan
Man always a great day when Ryan posts a video!!
thank you
Hey Ryan, Dad and Travis. As always great to see another great video. Glad to see farmers getting the feed they need. Take Care, Take it Easy and TRUST JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wish I had some experience. I'd love to come over and lend a hand. I can drive in a straight line. 😁

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Wishing you and your family the best.
Why do you have a Chevrolet brush guard on a GMC ???
Why dont you use the 46 to mowe to save hours on the 79
Super 😊😊😊😊😊
Did you buy the rapper or is it a demo
Just bought it this spring!
Great Wednesday video for sure
Need a tilt trailer. No straps required. Speeds up moving bales. Almost like having another guy
We’ve been looking at those, not too many to be found out there!
@@HowFarmsWork the used ones almost arent worth it.payed 5500 for my hayliner 8 bale. new there 8000. if you were a little closer id let you use it. but im in monticello iowa
you should just buy silage plastic and make your own and caps for like dollars not tens of dollars
Try builders plastic. Even cheaper
Great video Ryan as always, thanks. Glad you finished before the rain 🌧️🌧️
Already baled some 8 hrs after cutting 😅
Great video and drone footage Ryan. The bale wrapper has been a lifesaver for you guys 👍
That wrapper sure has gotten a workout since joining the farm.
Subscribed, so embarrassed I live in central PA but know little about farming. I watch farmers around here every time I see a tractor and some implement behind it in the fields it looks like a Rockwell painting.

My Brother is still trying to make 1st cut hay... its July 24....
Another wrap😂.. Good work as usual.. Great team working to.. I remember years ago.. like 15 😅.. there was kits available for balers to put film straight onto the bale in the field so the the tube wrapper could work faster and the bales were protected for longer before getting sealed properly.. don't know if its still a thing now but some farmers used to love it over here for the catchy weather we have.. stay safe 🏴
I’m .223
Just hauled 158 dry bales, 14 at a time 2 hrs round trip. Not a strap one, your wasting time strapping
We’ve lost bales before. If we’re going a longer distance we strap them all. Kid in my class also had a round bale land on his wind shield in high school. Better safe than sorry.
Don't know which is worse, the stuttering and stammering or that lame music??
Hey friend if you don’t like it why don’t you watch something else wouldn’t that be the smart thing to do 😂
Be kind my friend. He isn't reading a script. Be well!
