A thing we’ve used to help with the grass wrapping around the PTO is attaching a mud flap to the bottom of the tractor where the PTO attaches. It drags across the grass and lays it down enough to avoid coming in contact with the PTO. Hope this helps if you try it!
TIM from Canada when you were cutting hay and you were finding that it is wrapping up on your PTO... invest in a battery powered... hedge trimmer this way it will help you out to clip out the grass from your PTO... if the hedge trimmer will cut through a tough branch it will be no problem with grass you can get this in battery powered Milwaukee Dewalt Makita pretty much anything... most people usually stick with what they have whatever batteries you were using this is the brand you use Dewalt or Milwaukee.. or whatever you can find on sale but this will help you in the long run when the grass is running around your PTO....
Those are beautiful shots of the fields. I grew up on a NH dairy farm in the 1940's onward, and haying was hot, humid and hard work. But, being in the fields at that time of year was great. So much for bygone youth.
I’m a small timer eith 35 head of cattle here in the high mountains of West Virginia. I wouldn’t know how to act with such level ground. If I round baled on level ground, I would have to go find a hill to dump it out. It just wouldn’t feel natural. Lol I have ran a new Holland 615. 7 foot disc mower for twenty years. This year I upgraded to a 10 foot disc. I wanted a moco but couldn’t afford the extra cost since I also needed a tedder this year also. People don’t understand the hard work snd dedication it takes to make hay happen. It’s a major undertaking
Looks great. We have the impellers set about 1 inch off of the conditioning hood on our Krone and in very heavy hay get a 3 day from cut to bale and dry hay, 15% moisture or less frequently. Our hay is fescue, orchard grass and timothy. Best of luck!
The bottom land is a beautiful property. Travis worked very hard and spent the money on inputs the last two years to make that record yield. Good luck with the weather for record yields and good grain prices.
We used to run a Kuhn with flails, does excellent job conditioning. Grass and legumes, no problem with leaf loss. Put a dragging rubber flap under drawbar to keep long grass out of PTO adapter. Beautiful grass hay crop.
That is some beautiful hay and the mower is amazing with the capacity it can handle! We have been extremely dry in ND this year and up until yesterday I think our year total for rain was right around 1", yesterday we got an 1.23" and my grass is already starting to turn green again! We got permission this year to hay off all our CRP for the draught emergency I am sure the hay we get is going to be around half the quality as is the norm but I guess any is better than nothing!
As usual, I enjoy all your analysis. The analysis gives me things to think about for my small 20 acres operation. I am 72, & retired, but want something to do, so I won't be buying any of the big equipment, that you have, but will get some ( new to me) used equipment, to replace what I have. Thank you for the ideas.
Yeah same here, but I've "borrowed" good ideas off new equipment and engineered it into my own older machinery by modifying it similarly... Easiest one I did was installing new Kinze brush meters on my early 70's 7100 Deere planter, makes it plant as good as a brand new planter, FAR superior to the old plate bottoms it came with! OL J R :)
Hook a mud flap under your draw bar at the back of the rear housing, let about 12 inches lay on the ground, it will keep the hay out of your PTO and hitch
My POS Kubota mower has the tail boards similar to that, but I can’t store mine on the machine. I still think deere and new holland has it figured out the best where you don’t need to remove shields to get a wide windrow.
Great vid. We’ve got a pto adapter on one of our tractors though it rarely gets used anymore as the tractor for our hx14 shredder from a small to big 1000. We upgraded shredders this month and they sent us the wrong shaft for our main tractors we run with the shredder and had to get another one from Deere but no big deal past downtime for getting the other shaft as we caught it after it was dropped off
From personal experience a heavy rubber mud flap or equivalent works good to prevent PTO wrapping. Its a pain sometimes and amazing how tight it will wrap lol
Hey Ryan thanks for the great video, I really enjoy it when you guys are cutting hay. That’s some great hay and the Kuhn is doing a great job with it.👍
Kuhn makes good equipment. I got a 2004 8ft Gehl 1162 disc mower it is made by Kuhn. Good video. Love that Kuhn mower. Like to have one like it myself. I bale about 1,200 4x5 round rolls a year.
On the old 8N Ford with a mower, they sold a pan that bolted below the PTO and prevented it winding up on the shaft and knuckle joint even if the shaft guard was missing. I still don't miss mowing with a sickle bar mower :)
Gayday Ryan Melbourne Australia still watching pal, that mower is awesome, good grass there Travis has produced, hopefully you get many bales done and put away this year, congratulations on your news mate, good choice. Thanks again for video mate your still the godfather on drone footage, well done
Great video Ryan as always. Do me a favor and make sure you have a fire extinguisher in each of your tractors incase the grass/hay would catch fire so you can save your tractor even possibly save your life as well. Be safe and God Bless !
Drove a few tractors over the years I think ive even driven that exact same model of tractor in Australia... always hated that JD style of cab with the stupidly narrow door however.
great video ryan the hay looks really tall before you mowed it thats something you dont see everyday is a new toy and hasnt bin used for thr first time thumbs up and shared
I believe the mower cuts the hay best when it's upright (never done it so could be wrong). I think your idea would work if you rigged the mat to be a shield instead.
@@someperson7 pretty much always offset. Except maybe when opening a field, but that's what Trevor did. The problem came from cut hay that was still somewhat standing upright in the windrow.
@@Bartjebart2 The going back and forth puts the hay that is partially still standing at an angle, pointing TOWARD the tractor rather than away from it, so on the return pass if it hits anything underneath the tractor, like the drawbar frame, it goes up and over it, which pushes it right up into the PTO. Need a flap in there to push the hay over the other way and if it DOES push up it pushes the mudflap up against the bottom of the tractor until it slides on by as the tractor passes over, too far away to get wrapped in the PTO. Later! OL J R :)
This is the video I was waiting for! The Valley has such amazing views down there...and that is some dense grass. I think it's safe to say Travis got some good stuff off that field lol. Glad you got some shots of both mowers running! Doesn't matter what color the machine is, if it works and looks good doing it then its good enough for me lol. Ryan - have you watched the UA-cam video [transferred from 16 mm film] of haying in Northern Nevada in 1953? I would very much like to hear what you have to say about farming techniques back then compared with today, expercially about yields. The Humboldt River Valley is an incredibly fetile place, but I don't know if they can match Wisconsin for yields. Haying was a neighbor-helping-neighbor community project. Those ranchers were raising hay to keep their animals alive through the Winter. They all used those little Farmall tractors that were so common back then. Apart from the tractors, I don't think their techniques had changed much since that area was first settled, in the 1860's. Please watch that video and tell us what you think. Thanks.
So satisfying to watch the shiny waving grass cut into perfect windrows.

That usually don’t happen running around the field. Changing directions is when it always gets me
About time Americans start using front implements.
Or use the PTO guard instead
I used the same solution to correct hay from wrapping around the driveshaft, it worked well for me.
Guys. Its simple. Slow down your speed when cutting thick heavy grass..
@@kentsmith614 discbines don’t like going slow they cut better the fuller you keep them running and they love heavy material
I just watched your "Farmposal Rewind" again, and every time through it there's more to like, because it's so very well made.
Thank you!
I think the same thing Ryan did a great job on making the video. When I hear that song I think of Ryan and Hannah what a cute couple

Love to watch the tall grass sway like an ocean. Gkad to see an area this year have some great outcomes
Brings back high school memories of cutting alfalfa and grass for silage with an open station 4230 and Heston 1010 Hydroswing mowco.
Looks like a mowing monster of a rig. We use conveyor belting as hay guards anywhere it tends to catch or wrap.
Can't beat Kuhn cutters, we have tried just about every brand out there, Kuhn is the only cutter for me

Really like your drone photography Ryan simply awesome really nice scenery 👍🤠👌
Another excellent video, Ryan! Glad to see the mower conditioner working so well for you.
Thanks to Kuhn for letting them use your products and show us how they all work. I always enjoy the videos of the different implements.
It looked good out in the field with the wind blowing the green grass . Looks like it would dry alot faster . That mower was cool looking
Tie you a rubber mud flap under your tractor to go past your hitch and PTO. Works every time.
When we baling big windrows and the hitch wants to pull the hay with we used a piece of swather canvas
That mower gets the job done😉👍 mowing with two machines in one field looks pretty cool😁👍
Talk about TONS of hay. That Kuhn was sure spitting out a fountain of the stuff.
Man the guys out west would die for a field like that.... Amazing what a little rain does.
Best looking orchard grass I've seen in awhile,

Yup you can also put conditioner in low gear but i haven't really seen any difference in leaf loss to be honest. There simply isn't any.
That is some fine-looking grass.
Could you do a hay series. Maybe call it Cut and Dry? No intro. No talking. Just straight to cutting. Long vids too. Pleeease

with that wrapping there is a simple solution to it drag a plastic mudflap under the hitch.
