  • In this video I show you how easy it is to propagate Monstera deliciosa in water. All you will need is a monstera cutting and a jar of water. We will also take a look at the differences between tip and middle cuttings, because after rooting you can expect them to grow quite differently. At the end of the video I also discuss two repotting methods - using solid media and water.

    Great video, very informative. So many vids out there on propagating monstera claiming roots will be branching and ready for planting in soil in just a couple of weeks, so it’s good to have a video with realistic expectations. I was propagating 3 leaves for a couple weeks but it was just the single aerial root that was growing so I ditched them because I thought I did something wrong. I’m starting over now with a couple new leaves and this time I’ll give it proper time to grow.

    What did you do with the original plant? What happens to it after you take your cuttings? Anything in particular to do to keep it happy?

    So I just got some monstera cutting froms a friend, and immediately planted them in soil. they were starting to grow roots but weren't particularly developed, not he size of a fist yet. should I put it back in a jar of water? thanks!

    If I put fertiliser in the water how much should I use? 🙏🏻

      You can follow the directions provided by the label on the fert. I would suggest going for an even lower concentration to play it safe - young, soft roots can be sensitive to salt concentration with fertilised water.

    So just to clarify when we propagate, instead of leaving the aerial root long and in its entirety, we're supposed to cut it back? The aerial root on mine where I plan to cut it extremely long, so I should just trim it to where there is only 1-2" remaining?

      i wouldn't cut it too short, new roots grow out so if it's longer there is more space for roots. so i would leave 5-10cm

    Why is the black color?
    Is it alarming sign?

    • @horticultureme5538
      @horticultureme5538  3 місяці тому

      The black part of the stem is a sign of decay, but it hasn't stopped the cuttings from growing. Generally plants can withstand a degree of disease, but it is good to keep an eye on it. A very diluted bleach solution can help kill surface disease.

    Good video. But I noticed that your Monstera doesn’t look very healthy. Maybe is because of the place where you live and it has nothing to do with your caring techniques. In the Caribbean they grow amazingly green, large and with thick leaves.

      There is every chance it has something to do with my caring techniques! I was in Pretoria, South Africa when I had this Monstera. Our climate was warm but not nearly as humid as the Caribbean, so I have no doubt it wouldn't thrive like it would if it was there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though.
