This has been GAME CHANGING content for me Noel. I've had immediate results from everything you've taught so far and am literally progressing at the same rate that you drop this. Thank you so much!
Hahaha you just described my intermediate, 'cutback' PERFECTLY in my mind i'm doing a cutback but in reality it is more like a stall from the middle of the wave haha. This series is fantastic I am signing up to the patreon site now. Thanks from a 41 year old intermediate surfer who has been struggling to improve for years!
Brah! Dropping so much good info that took me countless sessions, and advice from the uncles in the lineup to figure out! The knowledge and the way you explained everything is gold to the surfing community. Even the compression on the back foot took me time to figure out. I wish I had this when I first started out lol. Awesome work!
Day 1 on my new Carver surfskate. Ended up with a BlackTip/C7 trucks and I really like the length. First impression was how well it translates to moves in the water. The ability to rehearse over and over compression, extension, look where you're going, chin to shoulder on heel-side turns, etc. is invaluable. Legs got a serious workout as well! So good cardio and great practice for my next session at Lowers! Thanks for letting us all know about how beneficial it is to practice surf moves on a skateboard.
Love these videos. I particularly liked your tip on staying high so the rebound can be downward. I had a similar strategy as a grom surfing on my single fin in the late 70s. For me I needed a fat wave of at least overhead size to make staying high workable. I think the first roundhouse cutback I saw was of buttons surfing at v land in a surf film. Then the local hotties (such as Anthony brodiwich) started started doing them in our waves south of Durban.
Foot all the way back on the traction pad helps. I used to always dig my rail or not be able to engage my rail until someone told me I gotta move my back foot all the way back
i noticed that too, as well on some of my best cutbackish, i can feel the front of the board disconnect from the wave, i think rail game is very important for this manoeuver.
Oh man the mirror footage doesn't seem like it would make much of a difference but it's so much easier to imagine my own body movements when I see it flipped like this - thanks for the goofy love Noel.
Perfect timing noel! I was trying my first cutbacks the other day and actually stuck a few, but it’s definitely helpful to have a good tutorial like this.
Keep at it. Skateing helps too. Don't get too lost in the details and technical aspects, not that there's anything wrong with this, but if you want to rip sometimes you just gotta go for it, nothing in your mind but going as fast as possible and destroying the lip. That said, listen to Noel cuz dude knows what he's talking about, I could have used stuff like this in my development. Also, don't try to do an air until you've mastered the basics. Drives me effing crazy when people who can't do a turn try to do airs.
J. Collins Thanks dude! I’ll definitely keep those tips in mind next time I paddle out. But yeah, the kooks who try airs but can’t do a floater make me pretty mad too. Ig they just get jealous when they see JJF do it hahaha.
@@JammaLamma And nothing drives me crazier than people taking surfing too seriously or wanting us to be sheep. If you're having fun - go for an air! As Pat O'connell once said "the guy who should win the contest is the guy who's having the most fun" :D

mo Syd Monstabox 2020 review drops next. The Shadow is more high Performance. The MB2020 is a daily driver/ So Cal Performance Board. They both surf completely different. The Shadow can handle much bigger surf... 3-8’.
I just got a Shadow and it's my favorite board of all time for any surf 3ft+. It's such an easy board to catch waves with and has a sweet flow and responsiveness. Forgiving and blazingly fun.
@@mosyd8973 I picked my up second hand from Offer Up but looks to be stock dims or almost so at 6'2" 32.5L. I wouldn't over think it, grab one in your size and you'll be stoked out of your mind you did. I picked up some JJF fins for it as well and the combo is everything I've wanted in a board - even though I'm just an amateur rider I can tell it's a magic set up.
Noel, this tutorial is AMAZING! Quick question. After you "glue your chin to your shoulder" and do the cutback, you compress while turning the board 180 degrees to get out of it. Do your feet and the pressure you put on your feet do the same exact thing when you're surfing when you do the 180 out of it and compress out? Ie. If I were to take you off that carver and put you on your surfboard, would your feet be doing the same exact thing with weight shifting from one side to the other?
Hey thanks for your videos. I’m really struggling to progress in surfing. I would say I am an advanced BEGINNER surfer. I can pop-up. I can catch unbroken waves and go down the line. I can do bottom turns. I can also duck dive. I’m just really inconsistent. I weight 145lbs and I’m 5’5. What board and size do you recommend for me to use so I can get better? Thank you so much.
MichaelSmith I prefer Futures... both companies make great products and I like the FCSII fin plugs a lot. Futures offers flex testing in their fins and I find that to be very valuable. FCS needs to up their game in that area.... flex in fin really affects the quality of your turns.
Hey Brother, Great videos! I'm looking into the Carve Board for cutback practice, should I get a certain one for my height/weight? I'm 6'1" 175 lbs. If so, any recommendations? Thanks!!
Hi Noel Thanks for the video I find that a lot of times when im coming off the bottom straight the top of shoulder then i start a roundhouse cutback. my fins(large,82 kg) will release into a tail slide or a snap half way Whilst this is cool move i can't seem to hold the rail and drive the board back on rail to the white water. Any tips?
Just sounds like you are shifting your weight to far forward to fast.... just apply a bit more weight to your back foot by sitting down a bit through your turn and hold it there until you want to come out of that turn then shift your weight forward at the end of the cutback or rebound off the white water to gain speed down the line again. What makes your fins release is shifting your weight forward.... if your fins are letting go or sliding then sit down a bit more on your back foot and keep it in the water for traction until you want to change directions.

Could you talk about back foot placement? Are you moving it back before any turns? I can cut back great on the Carver but not as good on a surfboard.
