    I have been skating on my smoothstar and have noticed that if you have a line (like on a tennis or basketball court) and you rail to rail from heel to toe to cross that line, and then toe to heel cross that line again, you are able to generate heaps of speed and create great movement and leverage. I noticed you doing that at the end of your video. Maybe that was intentional. I have skated with friends and once they do this consciously they are able to do it properly instead of just wiggling the board. Great video. Great series.

      Same here! I used to use tic-tacs (I think that's the term) rather than pushing most of the time when I was a kid. The big difference with the surfskate is that you can extend all the movements and lead with your head & shoulders exactly like surfing, where that can get choppy, crossed up and disconnected on a regular board. I've only had mine for about a month, and it's been a huge game-changer already.

    Legend! In my opinion proper compressing/extension is why EVERY intermediate surfer lacks power and throws little spray.
    Best tutorials out there! Keep them coming..... look forward to the more advanced ones.
    PS: I thought all surfers had a slightly open front foot? Feels more natural when getting your weight forward especially when you open the shoulders towards where you are heading (square front foot feels like you will roll an ankle lol)

  • @compisfusion

    This will probably sound like a super beginning question, but I think its one of the more important things.
    The take off, how to paddle in on different types of waves, angle, not angle, weight on back foot, weight on front foot , steep waves, fat waves, barreling waves, late takeoffs , paddle technique, weight shift, taking off back side, taking off frontside, hand position on board fingers wrapped slightly, hands flat on board. general anything to do with take offs I think would make for a great episode or episodes, after all this where it starts.
    But I love the content, and I for one will check out the patreon.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  4 роки тому +3

      All of that is very important... however most of that is very beginner and I am not doing beginner stuff right now. Right now I am focused on the Lower end Intermediate - Expert Surfers. We might do more beginner stuff in the near future and I am sure some of our community is looking for the topics you are talking about. All in due time.... Cheers!!!

    • @808Mark

      You're actually not supposed to grab the rails on any take off i believe.. i think your hands are supposed to be flat on the deck of your board every time. And with different types of takeoffs, i can't see any way to simulate that on land instead of just real world experience in the lineup

    • @compisfusion
      @compisfusion 4 роки тому +1

      I poorly described what I was after. It was more about the little tricks and tweaks taking off on different waves, breaks and size. As a quick example if I take off on a racing beachbreak with potential for barrel going backside. I would paddle more or less sideways, “beach hand” with fingers slightly wrapped as to assist to jank the board if needed, smaller wave weight mostly backfoot in drop, I also tend to have my front arm slightly infront on the board as it helps me with hip rotation , and so on and so forth. Doing frame by frame on favorite surfers as they takeoff has shown me lot if interesting things, not all work for me but still good. And the Patreon is the bomb! Thanks!

    Thanks Noel. You’ve been solely responsible for the amount of boards I’ve tried over the last 2 years. Really appreciate the content. Will definitely check out patron. Question for u. How do u balance the rail to rail compress extend without catching rail?? Is there also an element of back foot pressure greater than front which we doesn’t really show up on skateboard which is possibly more even footed? From viewing When u break down compress down the wave looks like weight is front footed but when u extend you can see the nose lifts out of the water. So is that like doing a kind of “Ollie” in skateboard terms?

    I have a carver and find it very beneficial as a way to cross train and practice different maneuvers while on land. What is your best advice for cross training for paddling fitness? Obviously just surfing would be the best option to stay in good paddling shape but being on the east coast us where it isnt super consistant doesn't allow me to do that. Especially during summer. I've thought about either just swimming or paddling on a board up and down the beach on days when it isn't rideable. I appreciate any input. Thanks!

    Trying to understand the compression part. I am not a surfer, more a hardboot snowboard carver, which has some parallel to surfing technique (extreme carving came from it). At 10:27 when you are showing compression, you show compressing on toe and heel side equally, but as you get more into it at 10:37 it looks like you are favouring compressing on your toe-side more than your heel-side. is that a surf thing, i.e., is it more efficient to compress then push on toe-side because of the mechanics of the ankle joint? Or do you favour one side more than other (which is the same for snowboarding for most people unless you are pro). Or am I not seeing it correctly? :-)

    Is that board any different to a smoothstar or similar? I find when it gets bigger, and you have alot of speed transfuring good habits from those boards can go out the window a bit. When you get too much speed on those boards the 'surf feel' goes out the window, so training for those high speed critical turns is difficult. Have you got any insights into using those boards for some 5ft+ fast point breaks? Also what board was the checkered one it was looking great under foot

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  4 роки тому +1

      Samwise The Carvers are better for speed carves as you can tighten the front truck. I agree that the Smoothstar is not good at high speeds.... it’s hard to control. I like the C7 truck on the Carvers, you can ride it super loose for tighter turns at slower speeds and really work on tight wraps, carves, and round house cutbacks. Then tighten it up and do some high speed carves. The checkered board is the Hayden Shapes Miscellaneous.

      Everybody's body's are kind of different too. Some people have very tight hip muscles that can cause they're feet to point outwards too. But simulating on land gets you practicing good habits for when you're actually in the water

    • @lyallm331
      @lyallm331 4 роки тому +1

      Fully agree! I surf, skate, windsurf, kitesurf. A square front foot is not natural, limits you opening ya shoulders (very important for all heel side carves/backside bottom turns) Also makes it hard to weight your front foot, and finally less balance.
      *think Noel might be referring more to the carver skateboard with the parallel stance....

    • @mattclem382
      @mattclem382 4 роки тому +2

      @ccoovvii I was also surprised to hear that. I know while surfing on your backside opening the front foot can help open your shoulders to get more speed down the line. But there might be something to what he said about a more parallel stance allowing for more torque and radical maneuvers. You should watch the pros and see what their stance is like. See if it changes from frontside to backside. Noel's content is the best for sure, but there is a lot we can do as viewers to answer some of our own questions by closely observing surfers we like. Noel can't explain every step to the whole internet, he's close though.

However when they have more of a directional board (i.e. for slalom) they have the front foot (and often both feet) opened and pointed in the direction of travel. This allows the hips to point more in the direction they want to go rather than the knee and ankle joints being overly twisted and restricted. So why do you think that being square in surfing is better considering boards are only designed to go in one direction and not ridden switch?

      @@Stomperproductions Keeping your front foot more square makes your turns sharper with less effort. I find that when my front foot is more square it creates more twist or torque as it creates more torque with my lower body resists my upper body movement

      @@surfnshowreviews7777 hmmmm valid point. So you restrict some vision to benefit from body tension transferring to your board more efficiently. Do you find it harder to go down the line on your backhand with the feet square? I.e. if you have to twist to look down the line you end up transferring that twist to your board and turning when you might not want to? Or do you just rotate your head separately by an extreme amount? I'm 1/100th of the surfer you are, but found that opening my front foot really helped me to be able to look down the line on my back hand. So now I'm thinking I should try and unlearn my recently learned habit....

      @@Stomperproductions I have a tendency to drive my back knee into my front knee when I’m pumping for speed backside down the line and that helps me open my shoulders to look down the line easier. Remember I said I try to keep my front somewhat square but it’s still a little open but not on purpose.
