It is so moving to hear Frank's voice once again after sooooooo long and wonderful to see us back together post dance contest. Can't break up a good team...I loved Spanky & Our Gang!
@Peggy Names Peggy just wondering if you ever had the opportunity to visit Frank's resting place. If it were me, I guess I'd have to be in the right frame of mind to do so. I'm such a big baby, I'd sob at the funeral of someone I barely know. I guess I just feel very deeply the pain of others.....or I really am just a big baby. Hugs to ya Peggy!
My dear Peggy I imagine how you will feel watching these videos, knowing that Frank is no longer among us, they made a good dance partner, greetings from a distance.
A great song from an awesome group that I grew up listening to! Spanky had an amazing voice that carried so many wonderful songs. The '67 AB kids certainly had no problems dancing to it!🕺💃
@Adrian DeVore, I LOVE Spanky and Our Gang and I so agree about Spanky and her voice and the kids dancing to it. PS, Great job guessing today’s musical group from my clue this week!
What a fantastic video and conversation with the great Elaine Spanky Mac Farland. I saw her live in Atlantic City for the Happy Together Tour 1984 at the Tropicana Casino. When she got done singing some of her hit songs like Lazy day I went up to her and gave her a hug and told her how wonderful she and her group were and she was so delighted, and this is a true story!!!!!
Spanky and Our Gang, along with the Buckinghams, were to me, the most underrated groups of the 60's and pop music in general. Neither group was around very long, but what they put out was special.
I was a teenager in the sixties (b.1952) and used to go to a lot of dances with my first love who I met in June, 1967 - the summer of love. There is probably not a song from the era that we didn't dance to. I miss that era and very thankful that You Tube allows me to go back. I am happy that young people get to see what this groovy time was all about.
"Sunshine Pop" is a genre name that was coined decades after the 60s. It was originally a name used on nostolgia compilation box sets then morphed into a genre label. The label decribes the sound, lyrics, and mood perfectly.
Here is my list of the top 5 Sunshine Pop songs from 1967: Lazy Day, Windy, 98.6, Sunday Will Never Be The Same, and Up Up and Away. There is a second list from 6 to 10: California Dreamin, Happy Together, Walk Away Renee, I Say A Little Prayer and How can I Be Sure!!!!! How about those great songs !!!!!
Spanky and Our Gang released three incredible albums, and a live (early night club act) album post break-up. The production on the three is some of the best of that period.
Oh what a nice clip! Don't think I've ever heard Frank have that much to say. He asked good questions on the Hotline.....which could often be an act of futility. It was great to see Frank and @PeggyNames taking a nice turn on the floor as well as @dancerdon and partner. This is another one of those "singalong" songs. Light hearted and a good tune made it perfect for the Spring time Sunday afternoon drive. Where I live in Kentucky, in 1967. a lot of the old horse farms were still up and running. Long stretches of white plank fences encircled each field where the horses were turned out to pasture. Many of the scenic rock walls that would border the farms are still there today. Stop for an ice cream cone, and we'd wind our way thru the Kentucky heartland for a couple of hours, feeling very blessed. Thank you Aaron....great selection for a tad cool, but still beautiful Kentucky day. Hugs to all!
Hi @Jean Lankton, I went to the derby 3 years ago and had a nice tour of the Louisville countryside...so beautiful. I love hearing about how people link these songs to their past. Thank you for sharing your memories.
Thank you Don and Aaron! Do you know, sometimes just one particular song can spark a memory long tucked away. Odd the way that works isn't it? Monday, March 25, my mother passed away 7 years ago. As I grew older she and I frequently did not get along well, even way into my own adulthood. So these childhood memories are special to me because at least for a short time, things were better. I suppose there were a lot of families like that in those days.
@@YCDTI you got to attend The Derby! Good for you Aaron! All the colors, ladies' big hats, jockey's silks, twin spires of Churchill Downs, millionaire's row, horses second to none! Aaron, did you drink a Mint Julep? That'll put hair on your chest!!! 😄😀
@Jean Lankton, It was so fun. A good friend of mine is from KY and his dad raised horses in Louisville so we got to see the training areas and stables. We all dressed up, went to the iconic Churchill Downs and I drank (many.....too many, lol) mint juleps and wagered (and lost) money on the races. It was an amazing experience!
I really do love watching these videos. It takes me back to my childhood days; junior high & high school. Even before that, my mom used to watch them. Good times in the "good ole days".
Nice! This classic was produced by the late Jerry Ross, who was on a roll at Mercury Records manning the studio for hits by Jay & the Techniques, Spanky & Our Gang, Bobby Hebb and Jerry Butler. Great stuff.
This is such a cool song. I wonder how The M&Ps would have sounded doing this. I liked how everybody seemed to forget that they had to dance when the music started. Thanks for the clip Don, and thanks for uploading it Aaron, as always!
Nice musical theme, I always watch this video and watch Frank and Peggy give me a lot of nostalgia, definitely a golden age of the 60s, I was born in 62 but watching these cute videos would have been dancing on the set of America Bandstan

Speaking our game or from Chicago Illinois and they were on mercury records which was based in Chicago Illinois and they were really good band although I don’t know how they would perform on stage without an orchestra back and I’m up I don’t they have any live music of Spanky and our gang or not. I’m gonna go on UA-cam and check and see if I can find any. I like the sound of the song on UA-cam the base is really coming through really good
How did everyone create the dance styles? They seem to all be doing the same type of body movements. I guess that question can be applied to all generations and their respective dance styles. This question is for anyone that was part of the AB dancers. Thank you in advance for anyone that answers. :-)
great question: I've traced much of the dance styles in 64-66 to the mashed potato and we have to remember that the bop was being danced as the swing in the forties. I find it amazing how long the bop style lasted, going through the disco thing and coming out unscathed on the other side. Now how did the mashed potato become that "running" thing in the nineties (actually the running thing came from Appalachia).
That's what I found surprisingly too! The first time I saw American Bandstand episode with him in it, I couldn't stop watching Frank. He was just amazing! Turned out maybe because of relatable aspects about us. I'm Indonesian, but immigrated to Canada instead of the U.S. in middle school in 2010 , so it's nice seeing someone like him on the show
I loved the Mamas & the Papas and when Spanky and our gang came out I loved them too. I really loved this song. I loved listening to music all the time in my room growing up! It was a fun blast from the past. I always watched AB and wish it was still on. I loved this show and watched it every chance I got & my other fave show that some fans of AB might remember, possibly watched (but had nothing in common except the watchers of both shows were generally teens), was "Dark Shadows" with "Barnabas Collins" everybody's favorite Vampire!
@@scottmiller6495 Hey everyone has their favorite which they may consider to be one's best work. To each their own! BTW - my favorite song and their best in my honest opinion is "Like To Get To Know You".
A thought just dawned on me: Chrysler used the melody of this song for their ad campaign for Plymouth cars in the late 1960s; Look What Plymouth's Done Now. (Just a thought)
I wouldn't say that Spanky & Our Gang were "knockoffs" of any group, particularly the Mamas and the Papas. Yes, this hit "Sunday...." and "Lazy Day" may fall into the pop/folk vein that John, Michelle, Cass and Denny were known for but soon as Spanky and company cut "Like To Get To Know You" and the politically charged "Give A Damn", that comparison stopped right there.
No, Sunday will never be the same. Thank you for this trip down memory lane. 💕
How about Lazy Day and I'd like to get to know you😄😄😄😄😄
