  • Spanky and Our Gang taping for a Murray the K Special. Live vocals to a backing track. These are the cool and funny outtakes, with the group showing us a bit of their wit and personalities. A rare slice of 60's pop history.

    What I love about the musicians and music from this era is the personality that is so evident; free from the test-marketi-driven A&R and cookie-cutter choreography of the Beyonces and Cristinas, et al..
    Plus Spanky had perhahps the most magical voice of the '60s. That certainly helped.

    This is beautiful. Elaine (Spanky) McFarlane, Nigel Pickering, Oz Bach, Malcolm Hale, and John Seiter. Spanky's voice is awesome even with a cold!!! The harmonies between these people is pure sugar. John Seiter (who later joined the Turtles at the end of their run) is hilarious with the non-emotional tambourine. It is a shame Malcolm Hale died so young. Elaine & Nigel reformed the group in 1975 with an album called "Change". There is a video of them appearing on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert with that material ...and Elaine is singing Country "With a Rock Edge" (Ann Wilson of Heart meets the Allman Brothers). It's worth a look. RIP Malcolm, Oz, and Nigel.

    Great piece of tape. I'm glad they saved this especially a rehearsal. So much footage in America from the 60s is gone for good or just poor quality Kinescope stuff.

    This is amazing! Love to see them just being themselves. Of course we have the tape in the background, but they are performing live. Spanky shows her humanity with her coughing. The tambourinist is hilarious--he is excellent but always so serious and never sings. Love seeing what people could do in the '60s. This kind of performing never to be seen again.

      I discovered that the drummer actually did sing the falsetto part on lazy day which is pretty good actually and was surprised when I finally saw that never realized he was the one that sang that high part and I believe he is still alive the only one besides Spanky at least I'm pretty sure as of watching this and commenting now which is March 31st 2024 hopefully they are still both with us and healthy.

    One of the most undervalued American pop-rock bands of the 1960s , very impressive harmonies , powerful and emotional delivery from Elaine McFarland , and Mercury Records could really nail down production values when they wanted to.

    Elaine was the best female vocalist of the 60's. The Mamas and the Papas got all the media attention, but the Gang was the real deal. All that amazing talent, and Chicago sensibility. What great memories !!

      I don't see how the Mamas & Papas WEREN'T also the "real deal." They all had talent and voices and music business cred. Both Cass and Elaine had natural talent and golden voices. Neither group is the lesser of the other.

      @@davidcoyle1084 I can't say that Michelle Phillips had talent. She was beautiful and her voice was okay for harmonies, so she was important to the band's image. But "Dedicated to the One I Love" is not the work of a "real deal" singer. She belongs more in the current era.

    • @blackmore4
      @blackmore4 Рік тому +3

      @@daveconleyportfolio5192 Michelle Phillips sounds like a "real deal singer" to me on 'Dedicated to the One I Love'. Not as powerful a lead voice as Cass Elliot but the contrast of the two vocalists was part of the magic. If every singer belted, things would get very dull. As well as being a great harmony singer and perfect for the group's unique blend, Michelle Phillips' charisma and stage presence was instinctive and very powerful.

    I’ve seen this same video where the recorded version of SWNBTS is dubbed over this live version. I much prefer this version. The music here is canned, but the vocals are live, and they show how great SAOG really were. Elaine McFarlane had such a powerful voice, and the male background singing is just superb. There aren’t many truly live performances of them on video, but the ones that do exist are all excellent. They’re often compared to The Mamas and Papas, and I think they more than hold their own musically.

      That's the "Live" album from 1970, which was actually recorded in 1967. They sound like a typical folk club hootenanny group on the album, which matches with their look. You'd almost expect to find them working at Shakey's Pizza Parlor. For the record, "Nagasaki" was first recorded by the Ipana Troubadours in 1928, long before the A-bomb came along. I see this comment was posted a year ago, which means "Nagasaki" was probably being posted on UA-cam about the time you were typing this. Try it now: ua-cam.com/video/VIXj8VCNibY/v-deo.html
