  • Hi everyone, thank you for 25:09 of your time. In this video I restore the Dell N5040, but at the end come out as Dell N5050. The difference is: Dell N5040 is 1st Gen and the N5050 is 2nd gen. I got N5050 motherboard because is fitting well in N5040 case, actually the case is the same and the N5050 motherboard was couple of bucks more, very small difference in price. The CPU which I used it is i7 2620QM, I install 16GB of RAM and I used 2 disks, SSD as Primary and HDD as secondary.
✔️Disclaimer: I Done this project for personal use only, not for sale or any other distribution now or in the future. Also, personally I do Not sell any components, other hardware or software.

Well done. I watched a ton of videos about that and a lot of Andrew's. Last two weaks I upgraded my laptop with a 2nd SSD, 32 GB of ram, new thermal paste and cleaned it completely.
Refurbished my old laptop, put 16 GB ram in, and gave it to my mom, and refurbished her old one. Ssd and 8 GB of ram. Now I will sell it for a bit of money. 150 € or something.
I doubled the ram in all 3 machines, installed 2 ssd, and cleaned them all.
That's so much fun, I don't want to stop lol!

I did a similar restauration on a Dell notebook from this gen, inspiring me in your job.
I bought a Inspiron 15R SE (7520) for a very cheap price. The notebook had a i5 3210M, 6gb of RAM ddr3,1tb of HD and a Radeon HD-7730M (2gb of memory for dedicated graphics) and 32gb msata SSD. Also, the thing had a FHD display, backlit keyboard and SkullCandy audio speakers.
Issues: the screen flex cable and the speakers (a pain, have to say)
I switched the Core i5 for a Core i7 3612QM and 6 gb for 16gb of RAM, added a 256 gb SSD (sata) and a 2tb hard drive (replacing a DVD burner for a caddy, just like you dided in this video). The 32gb SSD msata used as cache for the HD (with Intel Rapid, works like a Optane that we know today).
The speakers and the display cable I have switched too. Unfortunately not for the originals (Dell won`t manufacture this things anymore), but works just fine. As result, the notebook is really good, even today. Probably was a beast in his year, 2012 :)

I absolutely love that you rise up older tech for next life. It is ecological, also feels good and interesting. There are many uses for old laptops. I am all for recycling and reusing stuff even without thinking about "sustainability". I think this habit should be part of our daily livestyles.
P.S. Do you flip this tech after restoring? People would probably buy them like hot cakes.
P.S.S. Laptops like that are great for hidden object games!

As someone who does PC (especially laptop) repair and restoration too, I find your videos really nice. Nice to see what was otherwise gonna be put in garbage be turned back into working, shiny machines. You made a couple of mistakes, though:
    1) The N5040 board supports 2nd gen Intel Core I series CPUs and the N5050 board supports both 2nd and 3rd gen. You said it backwards.
    2) The CPU you used is a Core i7 2620M not 2620QM. 2620QM doesn't exist - Q in Intel's model names means quad core (generally), and the 2620 is dual core (as was said in the video).
Why don't you sell what you work on? With how many you do and what a good job you do, you could make a good bit. I do the same - restore machines from e-waste and sell them on eBay.

  • @Corristo89

There's a point where a repair is simply uneconomical. Having to buy RAM, an SSD, a new board, a new CPU and fix literally every other component makes little to no sense. For that money you can buy a used notebook in better shape, spend less money on repairs and upgrades and end up with an even better notebook.
The amount of effort put into this is amazing, but to me it makes little sense. I sometimes find notebooks like this at the e-waste dump, take them home, remove all the still working components, sell them and get rid of the rest. That's less time consuming and actually turns a profit.

Uneconomical as opposed to what? I guess what I do could be counted as such but for me it’s practically a form of therapy, recuperation and relaxation that is cheaper than any holiday (not that taking a holiday is easy these days). Also not everyone is interested in turning a profit, and anyway, if ppl didn’t do “uneconomical” stuff like this, who are you selling these parts to, if they are of the same vintage, as you say? :)

One thing about Dell laptops is that if they come with generic AMI or Phoenix BIOS, they are most likely low end models and usually just break down if you try to restore it this way. You are lucky to get one with no stripped threads for example. Also those motherboards are poorly made and can fail quite often

I've done many a CPU/SSD/Wi-fi chip/Ram upgrade in laptops. Always worth doing if easy or well within your comfort zone. I do despair however, when you get laptops that in order to swap out the CPU you have to removed EVERYTHING. It's why I prefer using ex. corporate laptops. They are designed for easy repair.

Quite frankly, this laptop would have been rendered beyond economical repair as getting a replacement main board usually costs more than 70% of the system worth and upgrading it to 2nd gen i7, 16gb ram, SSD and adding a 2nd storage drive in place of the optical drive brings it over resale value, both for commercial and private sellers.
On a personal level, it would be good to run for another 4 years before this type would be completely obsolete.
This is also a good video to show the lengths of how some refurbishers takes to make their 2nd hand products look and feel good again.

I loved the video, the only thing I hate about isopropyl alcohol is that it leaved a matt haze over everything.

Great video man!👍🏼 I really enjoyed watching it. By the way you got a heavy accent. Don’t worry nothing’s wrong with that I just wonder where are you from? What is your first language?

I had that laptop when I was little : D
that if I had an i3, it was very good for internet and games like Hot Pursuit 2010, Modern Warfare 2
from 2011 this pc and it still works well although the touchpad died + other things
I give it to my Mother
thanks to that, when buying a new laptop I had the Dell brand as a priority
