Well done. I watched a ton of videos about that and a lot of Andrew's. Last two weaks I upgraded my laptop with a 2nd SSD, 32 GB of ram, new thermal paste and cleaned it completely. Refurbished my old laptop, put 16 GB ram in, and gave it to my mom, and refurbished her old one. Ssd and 8 GB of ram. Now I will sell it for a bit of money. 150 € or something. I doubled the ram in all 3 machines, installed 2 ssd, and cleaned them all. That's so much fun, I don't want to stop lol!
Hello Adrew, I have watched almost all of your videos. Thanks to you i have been able to repair several computers and also help people with theirs. Your job is fantastic and i hope you will have millions of subscribers (i apologize for my bad English, i am French)
I did a similar restauration on a Dell notebook from this gen, inspiring me in your job. I bought a Inspiron 15R SE (7520) for a very cheap price. The notebook had a i5 3210M, 6gb of RAM ddr3,1tb of HD and a Radeon HD-7730M (2gb of memory for dedicated graphics) and 32gb msata SSD. Also, the thing had a FHD display, backlit keyboard and SkullCandy audio speakers. Issues: the screen flex cable and the speakers (a pain, have to say) I switched the Core i5 for a Core i7 3612QM and 6 gb for 16gb of RAM, added a 256 gb SSD (sata) and a 2tb hard drive (replacing a DVD burner for a caddy, just like you dided in this video). The 32gb SSD msata used as cache for the HD (with Intel Rapid, works like a Optane that we know today). The speakers and the display cable I have switched too. Unfortunately not for the originals (Dell won`t manufacture this things anymore), but works just fine. As result, the notebook is really good, even today. Probably was a beast in his year, 2012 :)
Not bad at all -= personally I would go with mSATA as boot drive, rather than Intel Optane, then have hard disk or SSD as secondary storage and keep the CD-ROM. :)
Nice, new video! I learn a lot from your videos, all of them are really informative, clear and aesthetically beautiful (both audio and visual). Thank you for doing these videos, I wish you a good day.
Andrew, you inspired me to restore a notebook I was about to sell, I cleaned it, upgraded it, and now it is working just fine! I'll use it with Linux installed as my work notebook. Thanks a lot!
As someone who does PC (especially laptop) repair and restoration too, I find your videos really nice. Nice to see what was otherwise gonna be put in garbage be turned back into working, shiny machines. You made a couple of mistakes, though: 1) The N5040 board supports 2nd gen Intel Core I series CPUs and the N5050 board supports both 2nd and 3rd gen. You said it backwards. 2) The CPU you used is a Core i7 2620M not 2620QM. 2620QM doesn't exist - Q in Intel's model names means quad core (generally), and the 2620 is dual core (as was said in the video). Why don't you sell what you work on? With how many you do and what a good job you do, you could make a good bit. I do the same - restore machines from e-waste and sell them on eBay.
I absolutely love that you rise up older tech for next life. It is ecological, also feels good and interesting. There are many uses for old laptops. I am all for recycling and reusing stuff even without thinking about "sustainability". I think this habit should be part of our daily livestyles. P.S. Do you flip this tech after restoring? People would probably buy them like hot cakes. P.S.S. Laptops like that are great for hidden object games!

I wish you were my repair dude. You seem like the real deal. I got conned the first time and the 2nd doesn't end up as pro as he claimed. My graphics card died 2 weeks later and he insisted that it is wrking fine.
Nice changes and upgrades :) Personally, I'd have gone with 500GB SSD or 1TB SSD and kept the DVD drive. DVD drives are still useful especially with modern laptops not having them, so anyone wanting a DVD drive either needs to buy an external drive, or buy an older laptop which still has them :).
Great video, but I have a problem with these Dell inspiron laptops, the trackpad doesn't consistently work with windows 10. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
One thing about Dell laptops is that if they come with generic AMI or Phoenix BIOS, they are most likely low end models and usually just break down if you try to restore it this way. You are lucky to get one with no stripped threads for example. Also those motherboards are poorly made and can fail quite often
I had an ES Systems computer 12 years ago! It was my 8th birthday present! I found it under my bed storage 3/4 years ago. Only the big power button with the disk drive but not the monitor. And found the really greasy keyboard but chucked it away lol
Im in the process of moving from a 5 year old laptop to a gaming pc, from your videos i wanted to seek your guidance 😅 i may not be smashing Call of Duty but if theirs an easy solution im not seeing id appreciate your advice, thanks
There's a point where a repair is simply uneconomical. Having to buy RAM, an SSD, a new board, a new CPU and fix literally every other component makes little to no sense. For that money you can buy a used notebook in better shape, spend less money on repairs and upgrades and end up with an even better notebook. The amount of effort put into this is amazing, but to me it makes little sense. I sometimes find notebooks like this at the e-waste dump, take them home, remove all the still working components, sell them and get rid of the rest. That's less time consuming and actually turns a profit.
Uneconomical as opposed to what? I guess what I do could be counted as such but for me it’s practically a form of therapy, recuperation and relaxation that is cheaper than any holiday (not that taking a holiday is easy these days). Also not everyone is interested in turning a profit, and anyway, if ppl didn’t do “uneconomical” stuff like this, who are you selling these parts to, if they are of the same vintage, as you say? :)
Sir Andrew I am waiting for your video its inspiring and i have repaired the hinge of the same model this week of my laptop friend Thanks Alot in Advance......
I've done many a CPU/SSD/Wi-fi chip/Ram upgrade in laptops. Always worth doing if easy or well within your comfort zone. I do despair however, when you get laptops that in order to swap out the CPU you have to removed EVERYTHING. It's why I prefer using ex. corporate laptops. They are designed for easy repair.
That laptop is more than enough to run my programming software necessities, i wish i could have one. Btw great video tho.... 😊😊Love your contents serrr

I agree. I'd like to actually learn to do this. I have this model and just want to be able to fix it a bit. Alas.
