All the best bodybuilders are machine like in their movements so they generate the most power. Tom is flawless in the execution of his reps. To generate that level of intensity you need an iron will to continue to push your body. Tom is a master of the squat.Respect the master.
its like a piston going up and a down. his quad is doing all that movement. he doesnt move his from position so he continually has tension on the muscle and he is going up before he has finished going down at that bottom part of the movement. his low back stays fixed in position and when it gets difficult it stays rock solid to make sure that his quads and glutes are taking the work in the squat. its really so very beautiful to watch.
hyperthrophy is about doing the exercise the most inefficient way such that you get the most stimulus. strength it's the opposite, the most effective way to get the most weight of the ground.
I had the honor of working out with Tom about the time this video was made. What the video doesn't make clear is Tom's (mostly) low set volume approach to training. He would often warm up and do only "1" set of 50. This is his 2 sets of 50 total (30/20). That degree of intensity lands you on the floor. 315 for 52 -- nuts. Thanks for posting.
"I've never seen 90% of the people in my gym squat." Or do Dead-Lifts, Or do Power Cleans probably, for that matter. And why? Probably because nobody wants to work that hard. It's hard work because so many muscles groups are involved. Most people are afraid of the pain AND the work.
It's not just about technique or mentality; it's about biomechanics. This man just has the ideal skeletal structure for squatting. It's like watching a duck in water. Beautiful.
Squating just 315, I sustained a right laberal tear in my hip. I don't know how these guys can push so much weight without getting hurt. I had so much pain in my hip and through my body it was like electricity shooting through me. In my 50's now, I just go up to 225 squatting and benching.
high reps build up your tendons. also remember that toms max is not 315, his max is something like 600. every workout is not a max out workout. you switch weeks up between lighter weight and higher reps, and higher weight and lower reps. until you work up both the muscle and nervous system to be able to hand (after many years) 315 for reps of 20-30-40 etx. its a long long game that requires time and intelligence with your training. for example i at 24-25 was squatting 225 for 30, but 225 is not my max. my legs had never been bigger than at this point. and i was not doing sets of 225 for 30 for more than one set, then i would drop down, usually to a plate 135 for 40-50. then off to leg extensions, because my legs were fried at that point. my leg days consisted of 3 exercises, thats it. then the next week would either be a lighter day perhaps in a 15-20 rep range with 185. then the following week would be 275-315 for lower reps at anywhere from 5-7 or 8-12. depending on weight of course. you plan your periodization of training, you feel it out. you learn how your nervous system responds and you know how best to do things. training requires intelligence. also if you were squatting and you hurt your hip it could be one of two things. either you were squatting too wide, usually people do this to compensate for a weight too heavy for them. or you are a taller individuals whose levers are not advantageous to squatting, this is why dorian yates ceased squatting.
Well how did that happen? Did you decide in one day to randomly throw 315 on the squat rack or did you progressively increase the weight? I can't see that happening unless you put more weight than you can currently handle...
Watching and listening to Tom Platz is my pre-workout before I hit legs - it puts me in the right mindset not to cheat on reps and effort, it makes me go for 110% honest best effort for good gains and strength. I've little knowledge about bodybuilding but thank you UA-cam algorithm for bumping me on Tom Platz videos, this totally transformed my work ethic not just in the gym but in life.
Even if you have long femur is just learn how to squat the right way a lot of people cope and just instantly say squatting is not for them which is utter cringe
The best workout I ever had was abdomen. I found a machine, that is just perfect, it was almost like made for me, and worked my whole abs thoroughly and was super comfortable. So I did the crunches and leg lifts etc. Sat on the machine and did a huge pyramid. Like 30 small weight, add 2.5lbs, 29, add 2.5 - 28 reps etc. When I got to the heavies, I could barely breathe. Then moved back - reduced weight as I upped reps. I had cramps all the time. So, finally I took some mid weight and just kept doing crunches. It felt as if I will die and all I could think of was I should stop. Deep inside on the other hand, I thought - noone has died from crunches, I want to see how far I can go. Man, now that was almost hallucigenic experience. I kept doing the workout and could see or hear or feel anything other than my absolutely burning abdomens and that I should stop. So, eventually I stopped after WAAAY going over the fatigue limit. And literally from that one single mega-workout I grew a noticeable 6-pack. I did abdomen wrok here and there, but never this hard, but the body imho thought that it should adapt and the muscles grew really quickly in size. This is probably same as when Platz does legs. Just get over the barrier in mind and keep doing. Feels odd. Results are great. Similar I had amazing chest gains, with cable flies, doing them in a similar fashion. Worst was pullups. There are a lot of small muscles, and I kept doing pullups, resting for a bit, and one more, two more, one more, etc. Some small muscle on the back hurt so bad I couldn't sleep for 2 days. I think these superintense workouts should be 1) done only few times, e.g. once every month 2) you should have had good workouts before that and not go in superintense "cold". Like if you don't normally do 30 heavy reps with legs, you should go there, having at least 1-2 heavier workouts before you go all out. Otherwise you will overload any underdeveloped muscles and will just be in a lot of unnecessary pain 3) they feel amazing. try them. Results are there even if you are seasoned lifter.
his first words made no sense at all, she says tell us about your powerlifting beginnings and then he proceeds to say actually i started as a powerlifter
why bodybuilders back then have better physics. look at that woman, so much better than todays female bodybuilders. thats the physic i envy as a woman.

I love the respect he shows to the Squat Rack. He calls it the altar, and feels the need to genuflect...Awesome !

Your mixing powerlifting with body building in your comment.
Body builders maximise pump and muscle tear. Powerlifters maximise power.
hyperthrophy is about doing the exercise the most inefficient way such that you get the most stimulus.

there is simply not enough tom platz on youtube :(
Tom Platz knows squat!
lol
No bodybuilder, before or since, has trained the lower body with the same intensity as Platz.
Whenever i think of squats he's the first comes to mind, not taking nothing away from the rest of the pros
what about Dorian??
Dorian always claimed to train harder than anyone, but Platz trained with more intensity than even Dorian.

So one warm up of 50 reps with like 225, then two sets @ 315, 30 reps followed by set two at 20 reps?? and that was it for squats??
I always looked up to Mr Tom Platz growing up in that era more than I ever did Arnold..Platz is a legend!!!

wow his knees man must be fucking strong
