Honestly the biggest downfall was when it lost the grounded realistic feel for me. Nowadays the main characters feel like Marvel characters and they feel untouchable. The early seasons 1-3 felt so real and every episode anything could happen. However i still love the show to this day!

Frank darabont apparently discovered The walking Dead graphic novels at a comic book shop in Burbank California back in 2006 and he spent the next 4 years trying to adopt it for live action and AMC took a chance on him and ultimately fired him 😭

😭 The writing and dialogue was never the same afain after Frank left. The difference was so glaringly obvious. We went from simplistic, gritty character run storylines exploring interpersonal dynamics to utter fragmented nonsense. I weep...😢😭

Negan bashing Glenn and Abraham's heads in actually began the great decline. Carl's death started another mass exit. I stuck it out and even watched all the spin offs. I'm ready to let it end for good

I think the biggest thing that hurt the walking dead was losing rick on the main show. Andrew Lincoln said he left for family reasons but lets be honest Carl was Ricks main motivation of continuing to go on. I remember watching Carls death episode, I couldn’t believe they went through with it. It ruined the original shows Endgame. Negan was carrying the show. Not having Rick, Carl, and Morgan for 3 seasons straight is blasphemy tbh

Imo the biggest problem was the complete shift in writing from smart, challenging, innovative media into basically every other show available. The first 3 seasons felt real, genuine, authentic, viewing it felt as if you were actually there. After s4, and especially the later seasons, you were always aware you were watching a television show.
Also idk man the latter half of the series always felt like a "how do you do fellow kids" kind of thing, idk how to elaborate further.
Keep up the good shit Jerry

Killing off Carl was the biggest mistake the show made. They could have at least made it make sense but for Carl to all of a sudden become a pacifist out of nowhere was so bad. I stopped watching in season 10 and then I went back to it later. I tried watching Dead City but I quit about 15 minutes into the first ep. Haven't watched anything Walking Dead related since besides reviews.

Hey Jerry, I love your channel.
I have a slightly different take on The Walking Dead, though. While I liked it, I never outright loved it. I still keep up with the spinoffs, but in my opinion, the viewership decline came from the lack of a clear endgame. I know the show wasn’t really about finding a cure; it was about surviving in that world. But since the characters didn’t have a well-defined long-term goal, we viewers never really got that “carrot” dangling in front of us.
The characters mostly just existed, and I get it-that was the point: survival. But I don’t think you can sustain that for eleven seasons without some drop in ratings. In serialized storytelling, you generally need a goal that viewers want the characters to achieve-something you tease, threaten, dangle, and then take away. Rebuilding society, while interesting, felt too abstract of a goal.
By Seasons 5 and 6, I also found Rick becoming extremely unlikeable-he was basically just an arrogant, murderous jerk, and I stopped rooting for him. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Andrew Lincoln’s performance-he’s phenomenal. Overall, Rick is a great character, but there was a stretch where he felt anything but heroic. When they reached Alexandria, for example, Rick told Carol that if the Alexandrians didn’t fall in line, his group could just kill them and take over. That made me wonder: How was Rick’s group any better than the villains?
Contrary to most viewers, I became more invested during the Negan arc. At least there was a tangible goal: taking down the Saviors. Negan was such a compelling villain that he made me root for Rick again. I wanted Rick to beat him, plain and simple. I love Negan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan-he’s one of my favorite characters of all time-but I felt let down when Rick didn’t kill him. Rick had promised multiple times that he would, and a main character shouldn’t make a promise to the audience that he doesn’t keep. Of course, I’m glad Negan stayed around since he’s such a show-stealer, but Rick shouldn’t have made that promise if it was never the plan.
Anyway, I’m not trying to trash your favorite show; these are just my opinions. I still enjoy The Walking Dead universe overall. Heck, I even watched Fear the Walking Dead! That’s what I think of when people accuse you of “hating on The Walking Dead.” I’m like, “Hey, Jerry watched Fear the Walking Dead-what more do you want from a guy?”

100%. They slowly made the show about the cast instead of Rick who was the main focus originally. I didn’t mind it at first but when they keep doing random filler episodes and have like 3 or so episodes without seeing him then it does kinda ruin it. I’m not saying it should be Rick 100% but when everyone else has their little storylines I’m mainly interested in Rick’s.

Season 1 and 2 are strong, I know 2 is slow, but it immersed us in this world, and let us get to know the current cast a lot. It highlighted the human element and dramas, but we knew the farm was not going to be safe forever, and the world was messed up outside of the safe haven. Season 3, in retrospect to later seasons is good, but I remember it showing signs of issues. Such as dialogue, lots of conversations felt a bit unfinished and like topics of conversation were glossed over. The prisoners were rushed over. Axel's story of killing Beth was cut. Glenn Mazarra started doing random stuff, he even thought of killing Rick or Carl in S3. He put Andrea in that horrible Woodbury plot. I do like Andrea, unlike many, and I can see where she was coming from - trying to keep peace, but it didn't work. Then Mazarra killed Andrea because he was confused what to do - I wanted to turn off for good. Stuff was going off behind the scenes and it was causing issues for the show. Andrea and Lori, both main females gone in 1 season.
Season 4, with Gimple started great. All of season 4 was good.Bottle episodes were welcome here, to let us see characters interact with others and flesh them out. The prison sickness allowed us to see more domestic issues living in the prison. Then the Gov returned, Hershel died, etc, all great.
Season 5 is when the show slowly started to jump the shark aka carol and daryl in a van fallin off a bridge. We started getting uninteresting bottle eps (the whole ep based on GREATM wasn't needed), but for the most part season 5 was great. I didn't mind the hospital stuff, was only a couple of eps long - but wasted potential with it.
6 is where it starts to unwind for me. Morgan, eugh. Jesus, wasted. But 7/8 eugh...I do not like. Horror was all gone. Carl died. All out war the only casualty was Shiva and Carl. Gimple speak and his lame symbolism which isn't clever started to ramp up.
9 got great - despite Rick leaving. New characters like Magna, Yumiko, Connie all got thrown into the whisperer's plot rather than sidelined. Which was good. Carol and Michonne spoke to each other for the first time EVER. In the 9th season. Whisperers gave us horror. And the pike and snow episodes were great.
Season 10 started nice, but the whisperers got nerfed, I don't believe Alpha would let Negan walk all over her community. Beta didn't kill a single main character.
Season 11, some cool stuff, but...when you have Jerry and Alden listed as main cast...you know there is a problem with the cast. The Reapers were not scar after the masks came off. Pope had an issue with Maggie but they never shared a single scene. Season 11's first part should have had satanic nut jobs in the woods kidnapping folk and doing crazy stuff, with no redeeming qualities. Pure lunatics. In addition the feral people in the house was good, but more could have been done with them. 2 very depraved groups, causing problems for the main group. Which would highlight how important it is for the Commonwealth to work in the second half of 11, and why they'd need to stay and put the effort into overthrowing Pamela's ruling to make the place work. It is too feral out in the wild now.
I wont go into CRM, I could go into major detail with everything. But I don't think you want a novel.

I kinda like the different feels for seasons. It gives a Flavour that other seasons dont. The first 4 seasons were the best
    It goes
    Movie 1
    Drama 2
    Action 3
    Action AND drama 4
Wish it would go back and fourth from drama to action between season to season with a movie like season sprinkled in

There was this old theory that fear the walking dead was going to be the shows version backstory of Alpha with madison eventually becoming her and show how she got to where she was. And when she finally became alpha she and the rest would cross over with a bit of a time jump of course. I wish they went that route but alas

  • @mr.goodboi2780

I think they could've lived had the quality at least been decent. Gimple and AMC tried doing too much like you said. The seasons were too long, the plots not connected and all over the place. Fear was the same but also worse. Then they started putting out 5 spinoffs in a row and it was just too much after some really terrible seasons of the main show and Fear and not of them came together in any meaningful way despite the connections being so obvious. The Morgan crossover fell through on Fear and that show went OFF the rails. Main cast members left the main show too fast and the show had to pivot around them like giant bombs being dropped. The remaining characters weren't given good arcs. They promised many seasons/movies and then ultimately didn't deliver, just 6 episodes, 2 of which were shit in a "well, here you go" miniseries just to satisfy who was still here and an obviously unfinished World Beyond, which is a shame because that show had some cool ideas it could've tied into everything else. Just a mess top to bottom. I like some of the new spinoff seasons but they still have the same uneven problems. It wasn't thought out, it got too complicated and over the top without a good story to back that choice up. CRM was cool, but never explored maturely and interestingly enough to revolve all of the spin-offs around.
I think the original show should've ended after season 8 or 9, and seasons 7/8 should have been condensed into a season or a season and a half. Then they could've skipped right to the spin-offs and films somehow and they wouldn't have lost so many fans and wasted so much time. This is assuming things would've been the same up until Negan showed up, which was all very good in my opinion. I think most audiences agree. There are some who said it got bad after season 3, but I'm not sure I fully agree with that. The show was at it's best when it was compelling character work and action, but once it became dragged out tropey drama they lost it. Season 6/7 started it and it never really found the footing. Sometimes it did but it would stumble once more. They had no idea what story they were telling and it shows. So much wasted potential.

The realistic reactions to the horror of this new world was for me the lynchpin of the success of the earlier shows. We felt the terror and absolute uncertainty of what was to come. She sheer horror of losing sophia and feeling Carol's desperate loss and then the horrific unexpected reveal surpassed anything I'd ever seen before. The farm and the prison were fabulous and the dangerous situation with Shane, Lori and Rick was amazing. Shane was a massive miss!
It really started to go downhill when the initial horror of the zombies waned and the storylines tried to compensate by getting ridiculous. The CG Tiger and people talking with strange dialects! Part of the realism was losing beloved characters but they overshot it with the death of Karl who embodied TWD! He was the whole point of it all. Too many new characters were added but most of them were forgettable and no one really much cared. I stuck with it to the bitter end and have watched all the spinoffs bar the last half of Daryl Dixon because seeing how far it's all fallen depressed me! I will finish it ~ I am a TWD diehard after all!

I know I been beating this to a pulp but since in one of the deluxe comics Robert once again expressed interest in an animated show once those comics catch up to the original comics story (towards the end) it seems very likely we’ll see something in the future

Carl was the last straw but to be honest it was more than just that. S6 was quite shaky for me and that was a sign for the trouble to come later. I still like that season and enjoy some parts of it but it’s not my favourite if I’m being honest. I was still hyped for s7 but we already know how disappointing that was. 16 hrs of my life wasted that I can’t ever get back. I’ll defend their lineup choices so that wasn’t a downer for me. S8 was slightly better but still terrible. Didn’t like the visuals. Dialogue was boring and it didn’t feel as authentic as the previous seasons. Bad choreography. Poorly written character. I can go on. If Carl’s death was written in a more respectable way and we had a better overall season then maybe I could get past it but it wasn’t.

I feel like when the zombies stopped being a threat is seasons 6 that was the beginning of the end. They should have upped the threat level with the zombies at that point making them remain a formidable threat. They are trying to up the zombie threat with the mutant zombies, not sure what they're called I don't really watch now, but too little to late. Then add the drama with other groups on top of the zombies.
