As a matter of interest, there are christmas tree farms that use coppicing trees - so after they cut the tree down, a new trunk grows from the stump. The bit that has been cut down is dying the same as cut flowers are dying, but the tree lives on the same as a rosebush lives on after you cut roses from it. It's also a lot more economical for the farmer because the new trunk grows to harvestable size a lot quicker than a fresh-planted seedling would do, and it's less work than digging out the stump and planting a new seedling. Alternatively, you can get a slow-growing conifer in a big pot, and use that as your christmas tree. You just have to have space outside your living room to look after it for the rest of the year.
