Putting a Doctor in the Pandorica and then wrathing the board, as you suggested, is actually a big flavour win.
It has to be intended, super flavor win.
Gavin Verhey who was one of the designers is a big who fan but it also helps that dr who shit and magic shit just tend to be about the same kinds of things (traveling across dimensions battling ruining everyone’s day)
When Magic mechanics match near 100% with Time Lord hijinx... So much great interaction with the overall MTG world.
The Doctor is a pacifist in the sense that whenever he does a massive war crime, he will say out loud "Oh, how awful. Nobody should ever have to do that again."
Shoot someone: "Oh no I would never do that guns are barbaric"
Genocide an entire species: "Ok"

That’s more a creation of the modern series. Tom Baker might have turned down doing genocide, but he still shot guns in episodes. 3 had a fight basically every serial, 2 used explosives, 6 pushed people into vats of acid as a joke, 7 certainly wasn’t a pacifist, and 8 is very inconsistent but he did fight in the time war.
Man, he really is British!
I think it’s funny that Vince says “Night of the Doctor” creates a combat Doctor when in cannon it actually did lead to the creation of the War Doctor. Shows how well they designed the saga
I could honestly see “Villainous Choice” coming back mechanically in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Since it’s supposed to have “villains” as the main characters it’d be the most flavorful opportunity.
I dunno, villainous choice seems more like something Heath Ledger's Joker would do than outlaws of the Wild West.
The key takeaway is the Wild West set is all super villains no heroes.

River Song's flavor is that her timeline is moving in the opposite direction as the Doctor. The Doctor first meets her at the end of her life, as the series progresses he sees her again earlier and earlier in her lifetime.
The minute I saw the River Song, I bought the deck.
The amount of amazing love for the Who series in this set is just out of control.
It's not that her timeline is moving in reverse... It's just that it is presented to us in that way... Even though it isn't the end to the beginning. It's the end, different parts of the middle in a different order (non linear) to her beginnings, and then a few more middle parts...
everything is legendary because nothing is small or meaningless in doctor who. a big theme in the show is that everything, no matter how small, is important and matters. also every maguffin is a ancient treasure that has tales that have been told about it for eons... even if it's future tech there's time travel so some future doomsday device gets thrown into the past and develops a mythology.
I don't play magic outside of arena but these cards are gorgeous. Immaculately designed from flavour, art, mechanics. I'm incredibly impressed. I did used to watch doctor who and seeing cards of characters and episodes that so accurately portray who and what these people and events are is making me very nostalgic too.
This is absolutely how universes beyond card design should be. Impeccable job from the design team. Hats off.
I'm absolutely gushing over these cards but don't have people to talk about them with and will likely never play with them. But damn did I still enjoy reading through them anyway.
With regards to the third Doctor, he was essentially the Doctor meets James Bond. He wasn’t above violence when necessary, but preferred nonlethal means.
Fun fact, part of the reason that the third Doctor resembled James Bond is because his actor, Jon Pertwee, served alongside Ian Fleming, the creator of Bond. Pertwee was one of his sources of inspiration when writing the original Bond novels.
Yeah out of all the Doctors, the third was the one most likely that would straight up shank someone if it came down to it. Whether through Venusian Judo or his fencing skills, he's the 'brawler' out of the Doctors.
The fact that Magic already had time mechanics that are brilliantly being reused is so fun, just a slam-dunk in terms of flavor!
I think "bigger on the inside" cascades because your spells bring more than they should, hence you play one card but it's actually two cards
It's also probably a reference to the TARDIS card, which allows you to cascade iirc.
The emperor and Davros having synergy is weird because they are enemies.
As Lawrence Miles pointed out, it's also very funny that Davros creates black Daleks as a result of this.
But they’re both rulers of the daleks
I'm sure they would have great synergy in the show as well if they worked together.
Oh, wow. I just realized Clara has good synergy with Backgrounds. You get two instances of the ability thanks to having two commanders, AND Clara makes the Doctor’s trigger a third time. Could be pretty sick.
It also synergises with Mutate, as weird as that sounds.

I just realised that Idris is a really good way to animate vehicles and give them extra stats on top of that, which is probably the intended flavour given she is the soul of a vehicle (time machine).
Regarding susan foreman, sure the planeswalk ability doesn't work outside of planeschase, but having a 2 mana dork just as an extra card in your opening hand for guaranteed ramp is honestly really good if your commander is one of the pricier doctors
She's also one of the only companions who is also a Time Lord, even if that only triggers a couple things.
@@thomasfleming8131 yes, she can crew the Tardis and trigger cascade. Susan was also the one who named the Tardis - so it fits well.
Regarding what makes a card "the Doctor" for mechanics like doctors companion, i think the official ruling is that is a class of creatures which have the creature types "Time Lord" and "Doctor" and no other creature types ("Time Lord" is an official two word creature type, the types are not "Time" and "Lord")
Fused spells are one spell that do resolve left to right. It still works to save your creatures because SBAs aren't checked until after it finishes resolving, at which point the phased out creatures aren't around to be destroyed.
I don't think phasing removes marked damage though, right? So wouldn't they die on phase in? Lol
@@sammysammyson phased out permanents do, in fact, get their damage removed during the cleanup step ( the rules specifically mention phased-out permanents). I had to look it up myself because I thought they would die when they phase in too 😂
514.2 Second, the following actions happen simultaneously: all damage marked on permanents (including phased-out permanents) is removed and all “until end of turn” and “this turn” effects end. This turn-based action doesn’t use the stack.

River Song seems really easy to abuse with cards that have you put some cards in a specific order on the bottom or when you scry. She also is extremely flavorful. One of my favorite character stories in the show.

Flesh Duplicate is also a rebel, so you can search for it and put it directly onto the battlefield at instant speed with Lin Sivvi or another rebel fetcher.
Gallifrey Stands in a doctor themed Jodah the Unifier deck seems fun (and with half the doctors synergizing with historic spells, doubly so)
Heads-up: When casting a split spell together using Fuse, you are not casting two separate spells that you can resolve in whatever order you wish. You are casting one single, full spell that resolves left to right. In the case of "Gallifrey Falls No More," you target stuff to phase out as you cast it. Then as the fused spell resolves, everything gets roasted for 4 damage, then the targeted creatures phase out. Then after the spell is fully resolved, state-based actions kill anything that remains with lethal damage marked from the big burn.

I think Gavin put together a list of full episodes to watch, but even if you don't watch those- Season One of New Who with Christopher Eccleston is a *fantastic* quick guide to the sort of stories to expect- and there's some very silly stuff in Classic Who.
People like you are inspiring me to make my own list, tearing down all the references.
I didn't care about 40k, but your passion along with the amazing decks got me interested... dozens of Luetin videos later I have a 3000pt Tyranid army, just played my first game last week... it would be awesome if the greatness of these decks got you to get through the first 2 reboot seasons, Doctor 9 and 10's first season, if you get through that I'm sure you'd be hooked...

I love the idea but this does mean you gotta discard your hand. Twice (just to make sure)
@@TomBpersonalhave a Waste Not and the self version of it(Bone Miser) out and you get a ton of mana, tokens, and card draw.
Say you and the two opponents each have 5 cards in hand, you each have 1 land, 2 creatures and 2 non-creature non-land cards. That 6 cards drawn, 6 black mana added, and 6 2/2 zombies. If you have a decent recursion package you could Animate Dead with that black mana and get back something you discarded.
It's even better if you do it after a Wheel of Fortune or similar effect.
@@casteanpreswyn7528 Clara doesn't give you demonstrate a second time unfortunately. I'd love to see this deck in action though, wheels would give you so much value!
@@knightofthenorth926 she does, it triggers his ability granting it essentially "demonstrate, demonstrate" because it is a triggered ability. Similar to how "prowess, prowess" or "cascade, cascade" works.
Edit:nvm, I read his first ability wrong. I thought it said it "gains demonstrate", but since it says it "has demonstrate" it is a static ability. My math still works out correctly if you copied Waste Not and Bone Miser with his ability though.
Don't Blink stopping Living Death/End from reanimating creatures is the kind of effect we need in Modern :D
Don’t forget you get have four commanders with Amy pond, Rory Williams, one of the doctors, and then a companion
Unless I missed something, you actually can't; not because the rules explicitly forbid it, but because you can't satisfy their requirements in a Doctor/Amy/Rory deck.
All the green and black ones are right out, because you need to be in WUR to have access to Amy and Rory. Yorion can't be used because commander decks HAVE to be 100 cards exactly, Zirda can't be used because Rory doesn't have an activated ability, and Lutri is banned because Lutri.
I was marathoning Doctor Who for a while and then forgot about it, this is making me really wanna get into it again...
That Heaven Sent saga is amazing for flavour reasons. Thats perfect.
It also just seems like a really nice way to keep cranking out artifact tokens for decks that care about artifacts or tokens (Brudiclad, for example, probably loves it).
Vince mentioning he has played with these already has got me hyped for another UK-content creator commander pod his channel like the 40k decks

I guess I'm arming my Imotekh deck with a laser screwdriver, I've really been half a mana rock short and this seems like a fun way of bringing in a third iP (Lotr had plenty of artifacts, the one ring and the palantir being highlights)

Genesis makes darlics for each lore counter on it, so that's 1 on turn 1 2 for 3 total on turn 2, and then 3 for 6 on turn 3. Making that end choice do a meaty 18 damage. May not actually be good since you probably want them around but it does a little more than 9 damage

Unsure. If you can't lose life, can you rack up Commander damage?
@@PleasantKenobiThere's a ruling that you can still die to commandsr damage with an Platinum Emperion on the field. The damage is counted even when your life doesn't change.

The Fifth Doctor could be really good with creatures that tap to activate abilities.
You get double activations, plus make them more resilient to removal
Eleventh Hour is what got me started watching if you're interested in making a step back in. They're so goofy so I don't blame anyone. But it was definitely magical to me and I couldn't wait to watch every single episode. Defo my first real binge. The set really really shows so much love to the lore, in goofy inefficient ways, and lovingly representing many of the favorite episodes. i'll confess I'll probably buy all 4 and make a playnight box. BTW the Pandorica episodes won some major sci fi awards, amazing stories.
Ian Malcolm and River Song sound like a chaotic pair.
There's a handful of cards that effect plane cahase, ones that let you planeswalk, and ones that let you roll the die

Since you don't know who river song is I have no choice but to nerd out for a moment.
She was prominent in the Matt Smith era, but the doctor first met her in the Tenant era, at which point she already knew him. So they have this trend of meeting out of order--her past is his future, and vice versa--which is where the two effect names come from. She keeps a diary (as shown in one of the other cards in the set), but the doctor is strictly not allowed to read it, since they're future events for him. And I think these effects reflect the flavour really well

Hey Vince, speaking of Warhammer, I'd love a flavor review of the Warhammer set from you, notorious fan of both. I feel like we're going to see more overlap between Magic creators and Doctor Who fans and I've been unable to find a way to cleanly understand who Inquisitor Greyfax is or what The Horus Heresy is. Even if it's just a series of shorts on the topic.

Silly combo that I know I'm not the first to think of, river song and Timestream navigator. Take an extra turn and put this at the bottom of your deck, draw it and do the same again etc. Potentially difficult to setup but essentially wins the game if it isn't interrupted.
same these decks seem awesome, I saw the like flaming trex card and was like what lead to that. These kind of feel like the semi-premium deck that I would have hoped for from the commander master precons

I think a lot of these things are legendary to make them less likely to be good in legacy and vintage, or at least as a sort of bonus to it.

Everybody Lives! looks like a chase card for legacy where it can completely blank Thassa's Oracle wins from Doomsday and Cephalid Breakfast.
It looks more like a cedh card to me like arent other counterspells just more versatile against an oracle?
Notes: I'm pretty sure Clara does not double the Twelfth Doctor's demonstrate ability because it is given to the spell, and is thus not his triggered ability, but she does double his +1/+1 counters. Idris is meant to exile a vehicle so that you don't have to crew it each turn, but as you said, there are far more possibilities than just that. There is a back companion, he's just in the villain decks where there are no doctors. His name is Vislor Turlough.
I'm surprised how well all of these cards are designed, flavor-wise. I do recommend you give some episodes a try. The Professor has Opinions about it, you could ask him what he recommends.
I am learning Magic MTG to play the Doctor Who expansion... I won't play other Magiccharactrers, but I do add spells non-creatures from other sets to work on killer decks in 100 & 60+ cards formats

My question is Can you have 3 commanders now with this set because of amy pond having both doctor's companion and partner with rory? because honestly that would be really cool and thematic to pair with the 11th doctor
You can't have all three as your commander no. But having the Amy as the companion will make it really easy to get Rory thanks to the "partner with" ability.
Amy always felt like the more "main" companion of the two, so I think it's still quite flavorful

Add in a companion and you've essentially got 4 commanders.

Unfortunately, Clara doesn't work well with the Twelfth Doctor. His first ability isn't a triggered one, it just grants the spell a triggered ability. And I'm not sure if Clara is worth running as a Doctor's companion just for the additional +1/+1 counter, which comes from the triggered ability...

The 9th Doctor is made to play with Gallifrey stands!!!! Because he doubles your upkeeps, and you win the game when 12 or more doctors are put in play (cut in half by the duplicate of unkeep steps!)

as a longtime eye-roller at most universes beyond products, i'm very annoyed at how good these designs are, and even more so at the fact that i will probably build sultai food with The Fourth Doctor/Clara and pretend it's an episode where they get stuck in Sweettooth.

Quick pedantic note at 9:12, you mention Changeling goving the Time, Lord, and Time Lord creature types. This is incorrect. In an interview it was stated that Time Lord is one creature type and is the first two word creatire type

Between clara, strionic resonator, paradox haze, the sabotuer transformer, sphinx of the second sun, and the ninth doctor, you can have 7 upkeeps in a turn. Holy rusted metal batman!
Edit: not sure if I'm reading this correctly, but with transformer and sphinx that's actually 15 total upkeep, my bad

I’m a big fan and have already preordered all the decks but I feel like until I’m sitting down and playing these decks I simply can’t fathom what they actually do or win a game of commander. There is so much going on and every card has a lot of text on them. They look fun. I just don’t see the interlocking win engine yet.
You can start messing around by using the playtesting function on online deckbuilders like moxfield or archideckt.
TARDIS is an acronym meaning time and relative dimensions in space... And it is literally bigger of the inside... Hence the bigger on the inside card

It's been around for a while now. Strixhaven had several templating changes, one of which was shortening "shuffle your library" to just "shuffle" if the library was already mentioned in the text.
you are wrong about the fuse mechanic. fuse cards resolve all at once left to right and count as one spell on the stack. each half does not go on the stack separately. so if you fuse gallifrey falls/no more then it does deal damage to your creatures before they phase out, but they phase out before state based actions are checked so they don't die.
702.102d: As a fused split spell resolves, the controller of the spell follows the instructions of the left half and then follows the instructions of the right half.
It's hilarious that everybody lives doesn't stop infect, when that episode the doctor cures all diseases from a bunch of plague carriers.

The land IMO is going to be dead in the water, Midnight Clock gets a counter EVERY upkeep, meaning you draw 7 3 turns after you play it in Commander with everyone alive, with the land its only every time you tap it, so it will actually take TWELVE turns. Yes proliferate and ways to add time counters specifically exists but still, I dont think its anywhere near Midnight clock
Tell me you don't know how to value a utility land without telling me. Especially one that synergies heavily with it's own deck requirement.
Heaven Sent becomes semi-broken with another card in the doctor sets that gives all of your sagas read ahead. And then there is the other dinosaur card that turn all historics into i 7/7 dinosaurs in addition to what they already are, including token artifacts such as clues. Those being white or green meaning you need a to dip into them.
how does reading ahead help? do you really want to ping for 1 for 2 mana every turn? note that read ahead skips all sagas you skip
@mopanda81 your green.. you gonna be able to flush mana into it... and be able to just ping for 7 or 8 a turn with no real problem. Which is a pretty good clock. But if you somehow get infinite* mana, which there are a lot of of ways, you can just close out the game with it.
he 12th Doctor i see as a focus to put cards in the graveyard, to suspend cards, and to EXILE cards. I was thinking of those 3 places to fill up and let the Doctor play
Feel like the Dalek emperor should have had convoke or something, he’s seen as a god among daleks and tapping shows subservience.
He has affinity for daleks that's literally convoke without the tapping and paying for colored mana cost. In most instances that's a lot better.
Daleks are subservient but not THAT subservient. They've had infights before (Imperials vs Renegades in Remembrance for example).

The absence of full art basics in this set is odd. The "universe's beyond" expansions generally have the potential to produce some very interesting and unique looking basics. Seems like a missed opportunity.

I wonder how Idris would interact with Prototype creatures. I know prototype says "You may cast this spell with different mana cost, color, and size. It keeps its abilities and types." but wouldn't the card, when exiled, have it's base mana value? And then would it come back into play as the Prototype, or the original card?

Hope there aren't too many staples across these, the few that filtered through from the 40k decks were alright but i'd still have preferred them to be self contained.
I like a bit of 40k but i never had any interest in doctor who so even more staples from stuff like this is a negative for me, but i hope the doctor who fans enjoy them.
At least a lot of these staple cards are named in a way that allows them to be reprinted in other products later.
The previews sound better with your accent and take on them than other channels. I'm not sure why....

war doctor has better out of set than in set synergy so I think he just didnt notice in playing with the decks
