Busted: Complaints catch County bus drivers breaking rules

- To Peter Adamczak, the Milwaukee County Transit System is not just a way to get around, it is the reason he is able to carry out many basic aspects of his day-to-day existence.
More than seven years later and I can tell you why they were speeding: contract with a private entity to provide bus service. There government sets timetables that can’t be adhered to, and the private entity has to make it happen. Without breaking the speed limit, the bus WILL be late. It snowballs from there.
As a bus operator in another city I wouldn’t recommend this job to anyone..anywhere..anytime. It’s not worth it.
@Gord Fulton I tried that. 8 months OTR, I couldn't stand being away from my wife and daughters. I quit and went back to driving busses, and having to put up with this B.S. But at least I'm home every night!
The problem with speeding starts with the unrealistic schedules these transit agencies come up with. PERIOD. Been a bus driver for over 13 years.
I've been a bus driver for 24 years And the schedules are unrealistic. Then if you get a wheelchair you definitely better throw the schedule out the window And sometimes and most of The Times the people in the wheelchairs, even in motorized One. they will ride to the next stop which In our city is literally just two blocks Apart. And the bus system has a program to where. If they used it, they would have a Van, pick them up in front of their house and take them directly to where they want to go, but they don't want to use it.
I'm retired going on 11 yrs and you have a lot of routes that don't have open facilities for drivers to take restroom breaks so it was common to carry a bottle for urinating or if you end of line was near a wooded area that's where you would go.
MJ - Have you ever had to piss behind a dumpster at an apartment complex? I've had to do it a couple of times.
@@mauricehinton5889 I've done that many times, I hate to say it but there was a Church at one EOL that refused to allow me to use their facilities and one time in the 90s was close to wetting my pants so I went behind their bushes while they were inside having Bible study.
I called & complained because a driver took off while I was still standing -- on crutches. Fortunately another passenger caught me. This was years ago. I had hoped things changed. It would appear they haven't.
Awwww.... You poor litte magnolia blossom.
@@Hidingfrompeople careful salty, you may have to eat it.
This is my understanding of drivers speeding. They arrive to their destinations quicker, they get a longer break before having to continue onto their next route. Routes are all planned by the minute, but sometimes you have so many people getting on and off the bus, it can slow it down. If a bus arrives late, then the driver doesn't get their break as they have to continue onto the next route. You then have bus drivers that might find a way to urinate in a bottle because they don't really get bathroom breaks. If you are driving a bus for hours and hours, where can you go? One time a driver had to use the bathroom so bad, he left the bus running and parked with passengers on it while he quickly ran into the store.
Wrong
I am a bus operator and you are right the public don’t understand because all they see is their stop....I am not condoning speeding, leaving anyone or other things but you must sit behind the wheel to know.
bus drivers go through enough bs. speeding is understandable 4 them, they got a time schedule for every stop
@@OfficialHiddentest no.
Management and Unions play a huge part in these problems.
In Maryland, MTA is notorious for being overly optimistic on route timing. Timing is often based on making virtually every traffic light, even where turns are involved. MTA also cries poverty, yet is notorious for the sheer number of Out of Service non revenue producing runs busses take.
Just as a quick example, on the route I take most often, MTA will run a bus from start to far end of the run, then have that bus be out of service on the return trip. Meanwhile another bus runs out of service from the yard to the far end of the run to make that return trip. That's additional fuel, labor and wear and tear on the busses with ZERO revenue produced.
On the Union end, the division that handles the routes I use is horrid with Maintenance and housekeeping on the busses. Busses routinely operate with broken fare boxes, no bell to indicate stops, defective GPS (or the operators don't log onto the system). Signage is often outdated (sale dates for monthly passes, public hearings, other things with a SPECIFIC date etc).
As a bus operator what I hate is when passengers try to control the temperature in the bus. In the summer, it's too cold and the winter, not warm enough.
I hate when bus drivers take off before passengers even sit down it's rude and it's dangerous for the passengers
@@richardtabor2140 you mean passing all open seats up ?
@@richardtabor2140 if you are behind the yellow / white line, we are clear to go!
This is one side of the story and bus drivers should follow the rules, but if we saw what passengers do on the bus and what they put drivers through, you'd have to call it a wash.
Bring back the street cars and ride the antique in style. People will have to cross the street carefully when there are no cars and other vehicles coming nearby. Street car tracks are in the center of the roadway. Back then the passengers are respectful to other passengers as well as the conductor.
That would be nice, but you'd have to expect to hear complaining all the time from the passengers about not being fast enough!
In Chicago it's common for bus drivers to tell people in wheelchairs that the lift or ramp is broken when they're actually just too lazy.
You wouldn’t understand it until a weekchair or a passenger that wants to argue about a fair has you 20 or 30 minutes late and your at the beggining of your route and have five minutes to get to the end
That’s why we speed sometimes
I’m sure you speed when your late for work so
@Gord Fulton It flies in Vancouver. Unfortunately. Translink encourages free rides and treats the junkies like royalty. Believe it.
@@sages101 dude... it's PUBLIC transport. ANYONE can get on. So do your fucking job.
@@iWhacko It is public transportation, NOT FREE transportation! and part of the job is collecting fares and throwing those people who don't want to pay off the bus!
Public Transit Agency Systems are legally bound to maintain employee disciplinary actions in confidence.
That's the Law here in California, if a Bus Driver Screws Up & Reported by a Passenger on What he or she did the Passenger Cannot find out the Aftermath on what Action was Taken on that Operator.
I bet those same reporters speed as well
passing by people in wheelchairs ?? there maybe was 2 wheelchairs already on the bus
Almost 60 in a 25 zone wtf
You ever have 30 people bitch at you for making them late for work or an appointment? Keep in mind, you get to see most, if not all of these people, every single day. As our dispatchers say, do what you got to do.
That sounds unrealistic! no bus driver would do that!
Transit drivers are under immense pressure. No excuse for assaulting passengers or disrespecting anyone, but as far as the frivolous shit like doing 10 over....get a damn life! If you missed your connection because the bus was late you would be upset. Drivers have to do what they have to do to stay on schedule. Try doing the job for a week before you do your investigative reporting.
Aaron Roberts Exactly! As a former bus driver, blame the passengers for not being ready, blame the passengers for not having their fare ready and rather sit down first and get situated. Passengers just don’t know the amount of pressure the driver carries. Passengers complain the fact the drivers are running late, yet they don’t know traffic, passengers unprepared exist... yet they always blame the driver.
it's a beat up.
@@mikealex4929 I agree with you 100%. I've been a bus driver for 4 years. Our fare tanks accept penny's. I once had a homeless passenger pull out a sandwich bag full of pennies. The bus fare is $1.00 and all I could do is sit there and wait for this guy to slowly take his time and put 100 pennies in the fare tank. We were very late that day.
@@mikealex4929 I’ve been driving since ‘99. NYC and now the twin cities since 07. The people are allowed to break the rules and drivers do one little thing and you’re fighting to keep your job.

My questions about those people who passed the ones in wheelchairs:
1: do all those busses actually have wheelchair accessibility?
2: is it in working order?
It is all well an good to blame the bus drivers it the answer to both questions is yes. But if the answer is no to either one, then it should probably be the company itself that is being looked at and not the driver themself. Would you want to stop if your only going to get into a twenty minute argument when you have to say no, wait for the next bus? Especially when there is nothing you can personally do at that moment?
Yeah exactly and sometimes they can only take one wheelchair guy at a time
Yes and they should be in working order but it is an acceptable excuse for blowing a stop. That and sticking to an almost impossible schedule.
Megan Dunnett - I've been a bus driver for 4 years. All of our busses are wheelchair accessible, so I would imagine in this day and age all busses are. Drivers are supposed to pre-trip the bus before they leave the garage in the morning and checking the wheelchair ramp is one of the things we are supposed check, although it could have malfunctioned some time during the day. All of our busses only have room for 2 wheelchair passengers. So it could have been possible that the bus drivers didn't have room for a 3rd wheelchair. The driver could have been distracted by something going on off the bus or on the bus, and simply missed or didn't see the passenger. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. We are human and we make mistakes.
Yeah, most buses only hold two wheelchairs or scooters! There is no room for anymore!
Until 10/15 years ago all Lynx buses had were elevators for the wheelchairs. And if that broke down there was no use stopping for wheelchairs/scooters and if it broke down when there was a wheelchair on the bus that person was stuck on the bus until they can get somebody to fix it. Now they have ramps which can easily be opened up and closed by hand. If there's two people with a wheelchair and/or scooter on the bus, there's no use stopping because there's no room for another!
SO WHAT
Many transit agencies want to keep the reports against the drivers confidential. Out of the two MetroLink routes, the Blue goes thru areas that are known for work. The Red goes thru Welston which is now a city known for gang hideouts. I try to avoid that route. Mention TOD (Transit Oriented Development) and the law abiding citizens say "Yes", but the troublemakers cry foul. Passing a wheelchair passenger that wants the bus is a discriminatory move and that can call for termination of the driver.
Buses can only carry two wheelchairs or scooters. If any more people in a wheelchair or on a scooter want to get on they will have to wait for the next bus!
That is not true! First of all, first come first serve to the ADA area; that includes carts, walkers, disables, seniors and another wheelchair. Second, if that person is a consistent problematic boarder that keep acting up or be threatening the driverS, then we can’t board them due to safety.
Try driving a bus before you report on them. Do reports on driver assaults and fare evasion instead
sjd0356 yes
Driver assaults are relatively rare and fare evasion is not that big of a deal. Driving a bus is not for everyone. I was a driver trainer/supervisor for 18 years in the para-transit industry, you can train a chimp to stop at bus stops and follow a route.
Tough Thomas doesn’t take any 💩
They do the same thing here in Baltimore Maryland Transit Administration. It's been a cover up for years.
He was doing 40 in a 25 and every other vehicle was still passing...
3500 vs 30 yeah!😎😎😎😎time for a sting operation
SERVERS YOU RIGHT JURK DRIVER! 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
That's in there pass
Union job
So thats why the buses use to smell like urine smh
I've had numerous drivers not slow down & stop at my bus stop and let me on. Once I caught up with one that had passed me by and was told he wasn't getting paid enough to do his job. And oh, when I found him, he was sitting on his ass eating lunch. He warned me not to file a complaint (veiled threat). I encounter a lot of ghetto attitude from the thugs driving these buses.
Well, when they have to deal with people like you I'm not surprised they don't stop.
I retired in 2010 after Driving 26yrs and many times I urinated in a bottle on the bus or wooded areas near the EOL When either turned down by businesses or facilities just weren't available. Today my Prostate is the size of a orange because of the damage done because of the many times i held on when I needed to go. At my last retirees breakfast i ask other drivers if they have Prostate issues add most all did. I'm currently on 2 medications that are the only thing keeping me from having it removed. As for the other issues in this Video outside of fighting I've done most and most all can be remedied if the drivers were given more time to keep their schedule along with recovery time at the EOL. At about the 15yr mark I started running according to my schedule and if the route was short on time I ran late, If someone was asking me to wait I let the passengers on board decide and told the if I wait for one I wait for all. After a few time missing their connections they said wait for no one.
You and me both
If people only knew what city bus drivers deal with.
Yep. And the company doesn't have our back. Ever.
I've seen MBTA bus drivers run red lights in MA before.
No bus driver in Orlando Florida would do that no matter how late they're running behind! Even though traffic is getting worse every year.
@@Mary-xb2fz oh here seen it plenty of times, been on a bus where I guess the driver was late and he ran a few lights to make up lost time.
For 35 years I have seen so many Lynx bus drivers avoid accidents with cars that are driven by bad drivers here in Orlando Florida! Lynx drivers are the best drivers! But every once in awhile there's an accident that no matter how hard they try they can't avoid!
@@Shawn_the_Protogen doesn't happen here in Orlando Florida because if they get speeding tickets then they get in trouble because Lynx does not back-up or support their drivers!
@@Mary-xb2fz lol.
What like of bus driver will pee or poop on the bus what? What like of bus transit that driving over the speed and not pick up some one in a wheel chir it take long but it there job to take people from A to B like in toronto if the bus driver do it there lost there job
You'd be surprised but some route layovers don't have restrooms so the drivers gotta do what he has to! Don't for a second think they're peeing in front of patrons! And no driver's taking a dump in one either so I don't know where you got that from!
When you have to go I guess you must go. I mean, after all look at the inner city streets and all of the homeless crap all over the place. This seems like a one sided report to me.
Corruption galore
Wow 10 months lmao
wow, the bus drivers in my country would never ignore the disabled. thats like the number 1 rule to treat them with most attention and care and if they would ignore one disabled person at a bus stop the other passengers would make sure to knock out that bus driver ,drive that bus back themselves, and help the disabled person to get on the bus. the US have some serious issues.. why are the bus drivers even in a hurry? our busses are late sometimes but at least rarely have accidents or rush.
I am retired, I have worked for 50 years for a mixture of employers including government agencies and the military, to my knowledge I was never the subject of disciplinary action.
However, there is no way in hell that I would accept any of my former employers surrendering my employment records to any media outlet just because they want a story.
You are not entitled to records protected under data protection regulations - Full stop!
By all means ask a company to comment, but do not go demanding anything.
Lame az news ...
I have driven transit for 6+years and speeding is sometimes required to keep the schedule but so is not stopping at stops, it not the drivers fault it the company for setting a hectic schedule allowing a few more mins to get a wheelchair secured can take up to 5+ mins (depending on tie downs) also informing the drive of a connecting bus can have the other bus wait a few min for the passengers to make there connection
Fighting the customers is unexcceptible behavior and urinating is a public safety issue that is why they have transit police. So many complaints is rediculouse and need to be addressed by getting a new transportation director or hire an outside agency to run it.. or cut there funding until they change.
Almost 60 mph in a 25 zone and gets a warning????
Hold in your hand a small nails carpet... throw under the rear tier.. hill stopp...
In the early days of covid-19 bus drivers were only allowed so many people on the bus, after that they don't stop. Throw any nails to flatten a tire and that's only going to make the people on the bus mad at you! And you still won't get on!
@@Mary-xb2fz someone believe the Covid 😷.. someone doesn’t… age 75.. only I uses at store the 😷… never got flu or Covid-19 vaccination and will not get it… I am going all over without mask and didn’t get sick yet… I am just a stubborn person against the communism….
This is why I have a car
Yeah, you're a control freak!
Which in Florida would be a problem, because that is why we have too much problems because there's too much traffic because people don't want to give up control of the gas pedal!
So you can break road rules on your own terms no doubt and contribute to traffic congestion in your one occupant bubble.
The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (GDRTA) has good drivers but there was one time when the 17 crashed downtown. These Milwaukee county bus drivers aren't shit. They always fly and there was a crash as the Marquette building
That’s Milwaukee. Here in LA everyone carries a knife. Let a bus driver act stupid like that and see how quickly he ends up slashed up. 😂
That will not be put up with in Orlando Florida! It is a felony to attack or even hit a bus driver for any reason!
Anybody who attacks a bus driver is the stupid one!
Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.
fit trackers in the bus all prob still run by mafia
This speeding is mild lol.
Milwaukee residents would @$#! if they were in the Bay Area circa 1986! You were never late to work or school.
70mph on the bridges, Foot to the floor between stops with Detroit Diesel smoke and noise! 😂😂🚌🚌🚌
I know drivers go through a lot. But I've experienced drivers treating us passangers like shit. I've even experienced a driver cursing & shouting at me after I told him to leave a passanger alone after the passanger's son had gotten cold & wrapped his son in his shirt. The driver was being obscene & yelling at the passanger even after he watched the passanger do that for his son! I've seen drivers get into accidents, I've almost been apart a few drivers in accidents because they do not know how to slow down. I've almost witnessed a little girl being thrown to the front of the bus all because the driver was in a hurry & the passanger & her daughter was not given adequate time to sit down & the driver sped up & almost crashed into a car in front of us, stomping on the breaks in the process & almost causing the little girl to be thrown to the front. It's ridiculous what these drivers do & caused some of us passangers to lose out jobs over a strike they had all because they weren't paid enough. THEY ARE BEING PAID AS MUCH AS PEOPLE THAT LIVE ON THE WEST COAST!!! And if that doesn't piss me off, it's when they see me as a passanger standing at the CORRECT bus stop & they blatantly skip me. A driver who incidentally was an African American woman, gave me a nasty look & decided to skip me because I'm white. Mind you I was by UWM just trying to get home & yes it was the 30 & I did report her but idk if they did anything about all the incidents I did report. Our bus system is a huge failure if these drivers cannot control or handle themselves.

Good luck on that because when the battery dies, you’re done!
😂 Just say you’ve never driven a bus or any other commercial vehicle before because his comment shows 😂 You think if this were feasible that every transit company wouldn’t have done this by now? The technology is nowhere near ready for autonomous city buses and will never be as long as humans are able to drive, ride biles, ride motorcycles, walk, etc etc on our roadways. They tried them in areas with light vehicle and pedestrian traffic and they still failed miserably and even crashed in some instances. Even if all the buses are autonomous there will still be human drivers that will speed up and keep buses from merging and changing lanes which will mean the buses will now NEVER operate on schedule. There are way too many complex situations to transit bus operations that will always require a human being behind the wheel so it will never happen. They’re recalling and getting rid of the different autonomous vehicles taxi services because of all the issues it’s causing with safety and congestion in California.
The Black and White bus drivers don't pay attention when sees the person waving and seeing the other bus, they don't hear the horn, they don't stop, they just keep going. The bus driver want to see a passenger come to work and home late.
