- A Pasadena transit driver says all he wanted to do was adjust his rear view mirror. Now he's out of a job. Fired. And he says for making sure his passengers were safe. Dave Lopez reports.

If I were them I doubt I would want to work with the company again unless they gave me compensation and fired the person who fired me.

As a transit driver for over 30 years I have to say I bet there's something we're not being told here because at face value this is just ludicrous!
As a transit driver over 25years we( the drivers) have to adjust our mirrors on our own. Well I'm 4'9 & we have a staircase on our lot that we use to help adjust the mirrors right. Sometimes the arms on the passenger side be so tight that we take the bus to the mechanic station & they have to adjust them for us. We don't get in trouble for adjusting the mirrors it's part of our pretrip.
Rollo Larson its absolutely ludicrous. Who cares how he’s not suppose to adjust the arm. To fire him is absolutely ridiculous and it was probably personal. Either way to me it’s like getting arrested by state troopers for not driving with both hands on the steering wheel at 10 and 2. Which they can “technically” do btw. And they probably will do that one day because people always allow people to go after others with this penny ante nonsense
I got fired for hitting a light pole with the mirror when a woman fell off a bike, on a narrow lane and options one was to kill her option two was to crash the trucks mirror into the pole. I made the right choice the company went out of business 2 years later.

You don't want him to touch the mirror and told him it has to be done by a mechanic. He then requests a mechanic to adjust the mirror but you refused stating it would delay the schedule. What's more important, the safety of your driver and his passengers or losing money to fix a safety issue?
Come work for New York City transit we are required to adjust mirrors and you get paid to be late. 34/hr
That's where I need to be at. I only get paid $13 an hour in my area.

@@wturner777 Starting pay for drivers when I started 4 years ago was $15.60/hr. But thanks to our Union, it's now $17.60.

It’s not fair. He seems like a friendly driver. That’s what all bus drivers have to do to be able to stay safe on the road. He didn’t deserve to get fired

There has to be more to this story. I've worked for First Transit for 18 years, and adjusting our mirrors properly is one of the first things we're taught to do. The only time a mechanic would have to be involved is if it was a matter of the entire support arm being out of alignment.

If we take his case at face value, it seems he has good grounds for a winnable law suit. WTH fire the guy for being safety conscious? Makes NO sense at all!

This makes me think their vehicles have DOT violations if the operators aren't allowed to do a proper pre-trip and walk around, even though this procedure isn't always required for this class of h.o.v.
I hope a fellow agency does the right thing and gives him a job for more than 21 hr, the man just wants to work.
As a retired driver with more than 48 yrs experience I wouldn't go anywhere until my mirrors were to MY liking.

I call this BS. I work for the MTA as a mechanic and everyday I see operators adjust their own mirrors. This firing seems personal very personal. He has a good case to win a lawsuit. Safety is paramount in transportation
I bet one of their mechanics complained he was doing their work Thus he got some sort of reprimand against adjusting his own mirrors. But that's the way they could fix that problem. 1 or 2 mechanics standing on A-line of 30 busses waiting to leave the garage making personal driver adjustments before they leave for rush hour he'd get his job back and then some. In that discipline letter they complained about him causing a slowdown that would be a taste of their own medicine
I operated the bus for 9 years both on the city streets of Denver and then at Stapleton International in the aircraft operational area. Mirrors are imperative. They are the eyes of the operator letting the operator know what's alongside and behind the bus. Without them, You're one of the three blind mice. This is outrageous. The man needs an apology and his job back with a bonus. !
So after he sues them He can move onto a company that appreciate his dedication to safety. Ridiculous
I hope he sues the company for wrongful firing and hope he wins. the company should have praised this driver for thinking of his passengers' safety, not creating a" catch 22" situation.

First Transit, huh? They've always been full of shit from the get go. They're the ones always preaching about safety (that's only ONE thing I agree with) and you get fired for doing the right thing... that's safe. SMH... That's why I left my previous job without a trace and moved on to something better.

My two cents. I worked for Greyhound, which is owned by First Transit. Never heard of getting in trouble for adjusting mirrors. The only thing I can think of is the controls that you use to adjust the mirror from the driver's seat is not working, you have to manually move the mirror. That can be a pain. Move mirror. Get back in seat. Repeat over and over until satisfied. Lots of drivers grab another driver and use their hand to represent that right mirror to signal to the other person which way to adjust.
First transit that figures I drove a first transit paratransit bus picking & dropping off mentally challenge kids & senior citizens & quit after 3 months because they were giving me excessive hours with barely any time to sleep or rest 15 to 17 hours a day 6 days a week after 3 months i notice i was dosing up at the wheel so i asked the manager to cut my hours because i was barely getting any sleep and didn't want to cause an accident & hurt someone in the bus & they said because they lack drivers they can't do it so i had to quit rather than killing someone in the but in an accident never went back
I worked as a school bus driver for years for first transit and they “claim to be safe” but when their were problems and you came forward they didn’t care. I went to the parents at times to let them know what was going on.
Whenever you get behind the wheel to drive, you adjust the mirrors, especially if the vehicle is used by multiple people!

I have worked as a bus driver for 17 yrs. You can't even make a turn without rear mirrors. Not many people know it ouside the heavy transport sector that big trucks and bus drivers never look over the shoulders. We only use rear mirrors for everything. A bus without a rear mirror is like a bus without rear wheels. The boss was apparently a newbie or found a good opportunity to settle an argument over something else. Probably Attitude.

Sounds to me like the driver was doing a "relief" where he takes over a bus in the middle of a route. You have to readjust your seat, reset your fairbox, and adjust your mirrors, and go, usually on the minute this driver switch occurs. If the 1'st driver comes up to the relief point late then it puts extra pressure on the relief driver because he is now late right off the bat!! Perhaps First Transit should start a Pull Out - Pull In for all pieces of work and then the drivers would have the full 10 minutes to set up their bus properly and go!! I'm thinking that union may be kinda new and union busting First Transit is just trying to see how much they can get away with. I drove for Metro Transit ATU 1005 for 36 years and never heard of anything quite this stupid.

**UPDATE -- It's been 3 years since I asked this question and still have yet to receive an update by the posting agency, news outlet or the company. Glad to see someone is so faithful in watching their channel, they care about their channel - obviously.

A part of your pre-trip inspection is to adjust the mirrors. That is a part of your CDL training. Just goes to show that some companies value production over safety. A good employee should not want to work for such a company.
How in the hell can MAINTENANCE adjust the mirror for a DRIVER? RIDICULOUS.

That is first class and so damn typical of the First Bus way and I know because I served with the UK division for 10 years and the philosophy was the same "If you cannot do it safely, don't do it" and when you tried to do it safely you get condemned for it, but firing you for adjusting the exterior mirrors is low even for them.
This Company 1st Transit has Millions of Dollars in Contracts to Operate Bus Service in the U.S. & Outside the U.S. & you Fire a Bus Operator Over a Damn Mirror Adjustment for the Operators Safety?
Mirror adjustment is this duty of the driver not the mechanic. It's part of the pre-trip inspection. This was a hit on the driver.

This is the very opposite of Chicago Transit. Hell you have to adjust your mirrors a very specific way so you can see. Its actually against policy to have them any other way but they train you on how it should be set. This case here is so bizarre. The Union will get his job back though.
By federal law 1, the operator of a CCV, must adjust mirrors inside and out. This is a part of the diver's pre-trip and ultimately his / her sole responsibility. It is not ! Not up to the mechanic to do so.Nor is it up to the mechanic to perform a driver pre-trip Secolnly the operator of a CCV may refuse to operate a vehicle that he/she determines to be unsafe until the time he.she determines that the safety issue / issues have been properly fixed and certified . The motor carrier is not allowed under the penalty of law to require any driver, operator, mechanic or anyone else to operate an unsafe commercial vehicle. Under any circumstance .

I'm a new jersey transit operator the company tells you to make sure your mirrors are adjusted. No mechanic would even bother lol it's the audacity for me

As a busfanner, I find his termination and the agency's policy absolute BULLSHIT! If the driver wants to adjust the rear view mirrors, that's fine--it's just for safety reason. Whoever is running the company needs to get his-or-her head examined or they should get fired too! The driver's termination was simply uncalled for.

oh i should have known, First. In London First Buses disappeared in 2013, and they lost the Thameslink rail in 2014 due to their terrible service, this doesn't surprise me
They literally just lost almost everything in Western Canada in the past couple years. I think they still have some school bus contracts in Vancouver and Edmonton, as well as a couple Transit contracts around British Columbia, but that's about it

If you read the pre=trip requirements for a commercial driver you will see that the adjustment of the mirrors is on the list of do's before taking to the roads.

That’s a bullshit rule, they just wanted to fire him. NYCTA, SEPTA and even PAT bus drivers regularly adjust side mirrors on the buses.
This is a ez lawsuit to win... Private transportation companies play by their own rules ... A dangerous game ... They only care about making time to get more contracts based on ontime rates mean while staff get the short end of the stick when it come to safety.
Like everything else in corporations, they make rules, someone tries to work with the rule, but finds it unsafe, tries to make it right-Boom gets fired. I completely understand why he does it himself, He is the one Driving the bus, Therefore He should be the one Adjusting the mirrors !!

In the end it is HIS license that he must protect at all costs. And it is also HIS vehicle while on shift. Hence he can and MUST make all adjustments necessary in order to insure its safe operation, the safety of his passengers, and that of all other motorists on the road with him. His seat height, mirrors, cabin temperature, seat belts all allow for adjustments for that very same reason - SAFETY. There is more to this story, much more.

Under fdot during pre trip you are required to adjust the mirrors, that is the law. The only time maintenance can touch the mirrors is when they are damaged. There is more than meets the eye. He will get his job back with back pay.

To the First Transit supervisor in this video: You should be fired for making sure that the passengers are unsafe. You should also go to prison for that very reason. Also, First Transit should be shut down and its supervisor should be replaced with someone who takes public safety very serious.

Company constructively got him fired. They apparently wanted that job for a friend or family member. Certainly not fair to him as being conscientious of his work and safety for passengers. He needs to get a couple of letters of recommendation on his character and job performance. Then apply at another bus company.

That's bullshit! How can a company fire a bus driver over safety. The drivers should be allowed to adjust the mirrors so that they can see properly. Would you rather have a fucked up bus or have the driver be able to see what's behind them?

The driver/operator is ultimately responsible for the safe operations of the bus, unless there is something else that is not being reported here.

For driver and passenger safety, the vehicle must be 100% mechanically safe to be on the road. The schedule is secondary. This is totally bogus. There's something just not right about all this. I've been a bus driver for 23 years and it's my duty to ensure the bus is in tip top shape before it leaves the garage.
The "bus manager" in this video lost his/her job and his/her freedom because he/she decided to put money over the safety of others so he/she went to jail for risking the lives of others over money.
Has the school bus driver or any kind of bus driver you're responsible to adjust your mirrors so you can see your blind spots your responsible to get out use of tire thumper to check your tires to see that they have plenty of air your responsible to check your own engine oil basically do majority of the maintenance on your bus if it needs more oil or any fluids then you call the maintenance over so that's a bunch of crap that they're doing that!
