- The TODAY’S TMJ4 I-Team has obtained several surveillance recordings from on board Milwaukee County Transit System buses showing passengers assaulting drivers.
In most cases, the assaults happen over an argument over a $2.25 bus fare.
Ten cameras positioned on and around the buses show upset passengers throwing food at drivers, spitting in their face, and launching water or other liquid at them.

Where I live bus drivers are completely covered in a little area with a door to the cab. It would stop most harmful contact.

I wonder if they're even smart enough to realize that the bus has camera's and that they have a 95 percent chance of getting caught. Like honestly, some people act tough but are stupid enough to not realize that their being filmed.

Lucky in Britain it’s mainly old people but sometimes college kids take public buses but they normally just mind their own business. I feel bad for the bus drivers in America but there is always a reason to these actions.

If you keep allowing African immigrants in you’re going to see the same thing. I saw it in Italy; an African was almost out of control he was so angry at a bus driver who didn’t wait for him as he was pulling out of a stop. The African was banging on the door and acting crazy; the driver finally stopped and let him on. I thought he was gonna hit the driver. He was muttering angrily and glaring at the driver the whole time until I got off. And believe me, Rome is becoming an African city. A lot of them are in Spain and France, too, even Sweden. If you Europeans have any sense at all you’ll reduce African (and Muslim) immigrants to a bare trickle and only admit those who have skills, can support themselves and truly want to assimilate. It’s too late for us in the United States. Don’t make our mistake!

Disgusting filth, no respect, these guys driving these buses need to be better protected, their seating area should be enclosed completely, giving them the full protection they need from the spits, punches and items being thrown at them. I don't understand how their managers reviewing these incidents couldn't see the need for full protection. The criminals assaulting them get away far too easily, they should have panic alarms that alert the nearest police patrol car to give some degree of justice, if caught the offender should get a lengthy prison sentence, not only for the assault on the driver, but for endangering the lives of all other passengers.

Bus drivers need a raise. Some crazy, angry people out there. They need more of a barrier for those drivers, they don’t do crap. In England they are fully protected.
True, in the UK First buses and London transport have concealed cabs protecting them from attacks but not always from spitting as there's little holes to make it easier for conversation and I've still had their disgusting spit come through the glass. Believe me the cabs are safer here but the people are no less scumbags.

Bus drivers back in the day were like an authority figure. But now transit systems around the country allow this to happen.
Lack of uniforms is the problem too. Bring back the crew shirt and tie. It will instill respect and a figure of authority. The driver will feel respected.

No it won’t protect you from flying coffee. That’s where a raincoat comes in for, but it does instil a form of authority and respect.

And maybe drivers are different elsewhere but, when I used to take the bus as a kid here in Milwaukee (where all these videos were) I’ve seen some of them be completely disrespectful to passengers for no other reason to throw their “authority” around. And while I think spitting on people is crossing a real disgusting line, treat people how you want to be treated regardless of your (real or imagined) authority over them.

I've been a bus driver for almost 4 years. The only abuse I've experienced has been verbal. Sometimes I let it roll off, other times I give it back to the passenger. But I don't think I have it in me to remain calm and sit there after being spat on.
Ive had passengers get on the phone and tried saying that i dont care about my job and that i was put passengers in danger and they WANTED TO SEE me never drive a bus again

Its good that the driver cabs now have a protective screen. However I think the screen should extend all the way to front windscreen for full protection.

I’m a driver here in Dallas, I’ve been driving for a little over four years. I have never been attacked or been spit on. I always hear horror stories from my co- workers. I’m truly not understanding why these drivers are being assaulted.

It’s apparently time for transit drivers to have bank teller level of protection. Any service job that has to deal with low life public used to be respected. We called them at one time, “community helpers” and used to honor and respect them. At one time. Long ago.

Sad fact is, it's unlikely any of those passengers got any punishment other than a ban from the bus. Some of those bus drivers were probably fired for not following "protocol " while being attacked.

I'm a MCTS bus driver and I wouldn't argue with people about not paying their bus fare because my life is not worth dying over it because I have a wife and kids I want to go home too. I seen some young teens got on the bus in the back door and sat down.
remote control and Lock the back door when the bus stops for a station!

You can only use physical force in equal amount to whats being done to you and at some point , if there is blood, you will get in trouble as well. I saw two guy arguing and every thing was normal and then the smaller guy spit on the big one. The big one pulled out his pocket knife and killed the little one. No that was not murder that was justice. This was in the late 60's and everyone said he needed killing. So before aids, hydatids, covid, and all these diseases, it was a killing offence. Now we make excuses for them are give a revolving door treatment. Makes me miss the 60's. Would be interesting to see the whole exchange, but its Ok cause I would never ride the bus in this country.

All buses should have a protective shield ALL the way across the side of the driver.. and also be shatter proof.

Those driver doors need to be reinforced.
One flimsy thin plastic plate is not enough to protect the driver from phyiscal assault or other elements; needs a much sturdy aluminum frame door with horizontal bars with inside lock , with partially bullet-proof thick plastic compartment to wrap the entire seat area for the safety of the driver!!
Unfortunately many bus companies are full of fraud, bus drivers don't get payed enough and they don't bother at all about their safety. This is a very harsh and underpayed job
Before all this happened, they were in criminal court with their lawyer pleading for probation.
It a good thing the drivers have some protection with that glass !

Easy fix, just stop running the busses and let them walk. When I was a kid, bus drivers were treated like police officers. We called them sir or mam, and showed them the respect they deserved. We followed their directions without question. They were bus drivers, public servants who did a very important job. What the H$ll has happened to our society. I just don't recognize this country anymore.
