      @@pilomilo1 And to be fair, it's not even obvious that he WAS building a dog house - it's just something his sister says, which could've just been a throwaway comment, or perhaps a snide remark about Barry being 'in' the dog house.

      Barry is prone to lying. He might have just said that as a snap answer at the time when asked. They'd just take it on face value because they don't care much about him beyond tormenting him. That said though, ironically, the sister Elizabeth (seen as the main antagonizer) in the film is probably the one who cares about him the most and wants him to be better.

    1:11 "Oh, a cake. We have a cake."
    I love that line it's little, but Barry went out of his way to get this nice gift for his sister and she doesn't even say thank you. Saying they already have a cake, it's like she's saying what Barry did is worthless and he wasn't good enough. That always rubbed me the wrong way lol

      There might be a lack of empathy there, but I think "excessive cruelty" is a bit much. I mean, they're pushy sisters, but plenty of people have pushy sisters. They're obviously loving sisters. Barry has emotional problems. An emotionally healthy person would not react to this kind of innocent ribbing the way he does. Could they be more considerate? Yes. But I don't think they're cruel.

      @@jon8004 Also, 'excessive' cruelty would seem to suggest that there's a 'right amount' of cruelty. We can be kind to Barry as he's the focus of the film but it would serve us best to take the view that the sister's weren't aware of how their jibes were taken by Barry.

    I read a review once that stated that this was the closest Adam Sandler would ever get to an Oscar nomination. Such a shame that an actor of such talent could not have gone on to greater things. I have always said Punch Drunk Love is one of the finest representations of mental illness in a Hollywood film. Sandler's performance here is up there with the great 'manic' performances, and I feel his contribution to film was overlooked here. I never had any respect for the man, until I saw this deeply nuanced, intelligent and truley honest porayal of a man on the very edge, hanging on by his fingernails. If only there were more films to really bring home the truth of mental illness..;)

    This was honestly one of the most stressful movies I ever watched, but also the most satisfying. I honestly would have snapped a lot sooner being in Barry's shoes. When he finally gains love and confidence, its absolutely wonderful.

    I have the same anxious feeling anytime I have to go home. Just the constant noise and yelling and tension always made me feel kinda sick. My family has changed a lot and it's not as bad as it used to be but the feeling of going home still stresses me out for days before. This film really helped me understand my own feelings. I have 3 sisters and I come from a family of mostly women, it can be so exhausting sometimes. I've never lost it however. I did once but my sister laughed at me because I'd never released anger before. It felt like I only let out 50% at the time but her reaction seemed to lock down something inside me. Family ay!

    The dentist is played by Robert Smigel, most famously the performer of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog but also a longtime writer for SNL, Conan, TV Funhouse, the Dana Carvey Show, and many other projects. Sandler isn't the only one showing their dramatic chops here.

    • @joseparcenary4706
      @joseparcenary4706 Місяць тому

      Smigel's line "I'm a dentist" is clearly meant to elicit a laugh from the audience. This is a comedy. There's a hell of a lot of truth in this film (I know first hand), but these performances are meant to be comedic, not dramatic.

    Barry consoles to someone he mistakes for a psychologist and has a breakdown. Worse, the next day or so, one of the sisters confronts him about his episode which tells him that he cant talk to nobody because they just shamelessly gossip and slander about him openly or behind his back. Barry was a lonely heart through and through and this *family* of his couldnt be mature and considerate toward him.
