Some people may take issue with the audio at 4:18 but I honestly like the distortion it has; it stresses the inner turmoil Barry's feeling and just shows how much he's retaining.
Who would even take issue with that? Its completely correct. Its like saying that a jimi hendrix riff would be more enjoyable on a nylon string acoustic lol. but i know your just being hypothetical sorry i just invented a little guy in my head
I wouldn't be surprised if this was a mistake they decided to keep in. They probably said "action" and Sandler went ape shit on the bathroom. Then they didn't notice until after how high the gain or output was on the recorder and that's why it sounds so distorted. PTA has been known to keep in mistakes or replicate mistakes he likes in his movies
It absolutely cracks me up every time I watch this scene and I'm starting to think its because of the over-modulation. It's also very present throughout the entire film.
That dude is a gentleman. Did you notice how despite being upset about the bathroom, he didn't embarrass Barry on his date and pulled aside instead before kicking him out? A class act.
@@silversnail1413 That's actually a little detail that the director was subtly trying to convey - if you look closely, the manager has exactly the same attire that Barry does, only with a slightly darker suit. He even seems to walk and talk with basically the same cadence that Barry does. The implication is that this guy represents what Barry will become when he finally finds a sense of purpose from falling in love with Lena. In that sense, it's also conveys that, yes, the Manager probably would win that fight because he has a sense of purpose which Barry doesn't yet have, similar to the way Barry eventually forces Dean Trumbell to back down at the end of the movie because he has found strength with Lena.
I mean...they are both great performances. I dont see the need to bring either one down? I can understand how someone can think either one of those performances was his best work.
I don't think Barry is unhinged at all. i think he is upset that his sister humiliated him by telling his potential love interest a story that makes him look bad and he doesn't have the coping skills to deal with it.
Also those suppressed emotions from the incident, the leftover rage, despite assuring her he doesn't remember throwing that hammer through the window, stoked the flames. At least Barry still managed to leave and take it out on the bathroom instead. Still cognizant of when he's close to breaking point.
This movie was a instant favorite of mine. Every scene was so awkward. U just want Barry to win. The poetry of it all is that she wanted Barry to win too. Such a beautiful movie 🍿
Its the contrast of the sheer force from kicking stall doors off hinges to the feeble inability to rip the soap dispenser off the wall that gets me chuckling.
You're probably just a sociopath. Hope you don't know any autistic people because the last thing they need is someone laughing at behavior they have no control of.
I gotta give credit to both sides. Barry may have snapped, but he came back to his table and date calm. The manager came to pull Barry off to the side and have a one on one conversation about the destruction he caused. Though, nobody *saw* him do it, he had no choice but to let him leave quietly without causing a scene or getting the police involved, save for the threat because he *knew* he did it but couldn't prove it despite seeing his hand bleeding and Barry giving a somewhat convincing alibi. Props to both of them.
@@siumahin9049 It's interesting that he only unleashes his rage on people who go beyond rudeness, threatening, to messing with his life (call-girl, Mattress Guy, Mattress Guy's four brothers) especially those he knows (one of his sister's later). When the Restaurant Manager warned him he'd crack his head open if he didn't leave, Barry stayed docile and reserved, eventually complying.
Such a brilliant, unconventional comedy from PTA. It’s as if he watched a Sandler film like Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison and said “These characters would never be able to function if they existed in real life”, and that was the whole point of the movie. To bring one of those absurd characters into a grounded film. It’s one of the funniest movies ever, in my opinion. My favorite rom-com probably.
I caught just now too. Very strange touch but I like it. This movie plays alot with light. There is a moving spotlight when Barry is taken by the brothers that transitions into the following scene of Barry getting them money at the ATM.
sir, did you smash up the bathroom? no. then who smashed up the bathroom? i don't know. you're hand is bleeding. yeah. how'd you cut your hand? on my knife. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I don't think so, it linked with what she was thinking. She's concerned. And found the story of the pudding concerning. But she liked him, so she wanted to bring up a story she's heard that she also thought was concerning to Guage his reaction to see what she was potentially getting herself into.
Emily Watson's character is just the most precious, darling woman, but I don't know why she repeated the hammer through the glass door story to him 😂 surely she knew it'd set him off lol
I even though I am sure she's fond of him she looks a bit spooky in the close-ups. The fact that she has contrived 😮 everything it could have ended up as a horror movie I think she probably represents PTA's mother rather than how he felt about Fiona Apple
That's why I love PTA. He makes huge films like Magnolia and There Will Be Blood but he's also not afraid to make smaller, more intimate films that might not make a huge amount of money but are still endlessly fascinating and wonderful to watch. I fear that soon artists and filmmakers like him won't be able to receive any funding and all we'll have are crappy superhero movies and cheap horror flicks.
The way Sandler portrays the two layers of this guy is so heartbreaking, that glib polite mask and then all that pain just battling to get through

its satisfying… just like an earrape

thanks cpt obvious
I love how the manager has the balls to say "I'll crack your head open" to a guy that is clearly unhinged.
I don't think the manager is playing with a full deck either. Makes you wonder what would have happened if those two actually came to blows.
That dude is a gentleman. Did you notice how despite being upset about the bathroom, he didn't embarrass Barry on his date and pulled aside instead before kicking him out? A class act.
@Habadashery Jones wow never think about that, great details.... he even ask him in a nice manner even he's clearly angry and knews Barry did it

Anyone who says that Adam Sandler's best acting role was from Uncut Gems has never seen Punch Drunk Love.
ahhh idk they pretty much on par with eachother

The audio clipping in that bathroom is just so perfect
Punch Drunk Love is a masterpiece, a work of art featuring Adam Sandler who gave a great performance.
It was incredible acting by several people, with some idiotic production.
@@skipads5141 what do you mean idiotic production
@@jpeg204: You'd have to watch the movie.
@@skipads5141 I thought the production wasn't ideal, but I understand the rationale behind PTA's choices.
Ok but the manager was actually pretty nice to not kick him out in front of his date.
Small detail at 6:15 the music is synced to the sound of the truck exhaust. Also when the music swells the trucks engine accelerates.
Jon Brion did a great job composing the music for this film.
One of my all time fav movies...Adam sandler is such a gifted dramatic actor

3:47 that aggravated flick he does always gets me
He’s like “here we go again”
Those small ticks are soooo relatable. Sandler did a fantastic job.
The way Sandler storms into the bathroom and immediately smashes that door always makes me laugh.
And the. He tries to break the air freshener and it won’t break lol
6:15 the trucks horn syncs up with the music

I like how Lena shows unwavering and unconditional love towards Barry despite his frequent emotional turmoil and social awkwardness
