They didn't understand Bale's brilliant acting until they saw the finished movie, as Josh Lucas admitted recently. Bale knew how to play it on day 1! In one of the interviews, Bale literally described it as an 'acting teacher's nightmare' style - exactly the reaction of the rest of the cast!! Shows you how ahead of everyone he was! It was the performance of the performance. Brilliant because there was nothing 'not planned', instinctive about Bateman. And later on, when the cast watched the finished movie, they admitted how great Christian was! 3. Then, the m0ronic film critics (the honorable exception was legendary Robert Ebert) were whining about violence and sex, not understanding one thing about this brilliant satire. And Bale understood it all from the start. This public stupidity at the time, and the indie character of this movie, without any PR machine behind it, was probably a reason why Bale was criminally overlooked by the Oscars. His performance as Bateman is a masterpiece. He effortlessly mixed serious drama, creepiness, craziness, fun, and ridiculousness together!

Bale's maturity & brilliance in this role is not that surprising if you know a little bit about Bale's life. Christian had very unusual parents and upbringing, his family has seen quite a few things. This means that the child has contact with various, exciting people and different environments from the beginning, and can analyze the entire spectrum of human behaviors. His grandfather was an RAF pilot, and his father, who was born in South Africa, for a time a commercial pilot, then he had his own businesses, then he was also an activist in various fields. The whole family moved around the world and had a nomadic lifestyle. Christian's mother was a circus dancer and clown. Christian grew up in a circus. Bale almost NEVER talks about it, but he did maybe 2-3 times, including a few years ago, at the time of the Vice movie premiere, on the HappySadConfused movie podcast, and it was fascinating to listen to him talk about his life in a circus. In a circus you have contact with acting all the time, it's all about performance, and you live with interesting people who know life. Acting appears to be Bale's destiny. He simply changed one circus for another, one stage for a larger and more spectacular one - the world of film and Hollywood!!

something a lot people don't know about American Psycho was the fact this movie was supposed to be failure but instead it aged like fine wine and became one of the most well beloved movies of our era
A couple of thoughts: "The point" isn't whether what happens in the movie is real or not, but that it basically doesn't matter either way. Patrick *could* be a stock broker with an over-active imagination, he could be an actual homicidal maniac, - the end result is basically the same either way: the world he inhabits is so utterly venal; so massively superficial and inhuman that he will never EVER face any consequences whatsoever for what he does, he is so utterly insulated from any repercussions for any of his monstrous actions, that he will never have the catharsis of being truly discovered as the ridiculous monster he actually is. He will never be punished, no matter how deeply he secretly desires it: Because Patrick is basically in hell.
I woukd argue that this is a metaphor for Wall Street etc in general. They crash the economy and ruin lives, but are rarely held accountable for spreading this misery.
Exactly he admires Ted bundy because he got to live out his fantasy the “smart intellectual killer” who got caught he wanted to be known as a monster and to finally feel some sort of release killing obviously doesn’t did that for him and he’s fully psychotic by the end
Bale could easily be also one of the greatest Jokers in film history, if they would make another solo Joker movie and if he was cast. The man can play anything. Just imagine him with the crazy smile that he did as Patrick, with Joker make-up - he is the perfect Joker. He has a longer nose and face than most Joker actors had, and with make-up, he would actually be insanely similar to the classic Joker from the comics!
There is something really funny about American Psycho being edited like those "x minute of y being a z" videos that is usually about some cartoon character being queer
Whats so interesting is the fact that bateman is probably the most sane out of all the people around him(except maybe louis). He is the only person who realized he has no identity and makes a desperate attempt to gain any sort of personality. He tried to escape from the system, but literally cannot because everyone around him is so determined to be “normal”. Of course, hes also the most crazy by far, but its still cool to think about
That is the difference between a Psychopath and a Insane person, a Psychopath know it's wrong (Not all Psychopaths are killers, just they who find out it bring some sort of emotional reaction) and insane people do have morales, but might not see why murdering someone for hurting them or do something they consider immoral to be wrong, they have issues with right and wrong.

I love the irony that the "psychopath" (more so a person with a ridiculous amount of OCD and Paranoia than a psychopath) becomes the most emotionally responsive character pretty early on, and by the end is in such contrast to everone else in the film on the basis of emotional intensity that it's genuinely somewhat relateable in a very strange way.

Lmfao the way he delicately tries to put the knife and fork down and snags the salt before the detective can look up so it looks like he was salting his food when he was gonna eat it unflavored. Which is highly unusual to the average person one to not season but to mimic the people your with to be more likable is crazier.
I just realized that Bateman shot the first building security guard because he walked into the wrong building. A factor of both his psychosis and movie's theme of everyone and everything looking the same. Bateman simply got mixed up which building to go into to, realizes its the wrong one, and kills the security guard witness.

Exactly. Who even knows if he killed Paul Allen, it could've been someone else
Exactly he admires Ted bundy because he got to live out his fantasy the “smart intellectual killer” who got caught he wanted to be known as a monster and to finally feel some sort of release killing obviously doesn’t did that for him and he’s fully psychotic by the end
The book states he did, actually, the book never has the "was it real?" situation at all.
He also marries Jean in it.
As a privileged elite
Bale could easily be also one of the greatest Jokers in film history, if they would make another solo Joker movie and if he was cast. The man can play anything. Just imagine him with the crazy smile that he did as Patrick, with Joker make-up - he is the perfect Joker. He has a longer nose and face than most Joker actors had, and with make-up, he would actually be insanely similar to the classic Joker from the comics!
7:26 he was like damn this gun is crazy..anyways
He honestly probably one of my favourite characters.
The complete unhinged and disconnected demeanour is hilarious
There is something really funny about American Psycho being edited like those "x minute of y being a z" videos that is usually about some cartoon character being queer
Next up: Jigsaw being sassy for 5 minutes.
@@158-i6z the funny part is that there actually might be enough to fit into five minutes!
Patrick Bateman and Paul Allen being switches for 45 seconds
The funny thing too is that american psycho was written by a gay man and directed by a lesbian.
i like how he pulled back, and spared his assistants life, shows he still has some humanity in him
shes didnt even know ted bundy, how could he kill someone who doesnt even fear him?
@@Franfran2424 he doesn’t kill because he wants them to fear him tho
@@MCHLNLSN exactly, he doesn’t kill people who genuinely like and acknowledge him
i feel that she’s the only person that he truly sort of cared for if that’s even possible
@@ottrhunter9486 i agree with you
Whats so interesting is the fact that bateman is probably the most sane out of all the people around him(except maybe louis). He is the only person who realized he has no identity and makes a desperate attempt to gain any sort of personality. He tried to escape from the system, but literally cannot because everyone around him is so determined to be “normal”. Of course, hes also the most crazy by far, but its still cool to think about
I appreciate the memes thrown in there man they’re pretty good
"He is..., he is in touch with humanity" and "he knows his behaviour can be ERRATIC sometimes"
@@birdsteak9267 bro this movie isn't even about a psychopath... He doesn't behave like one because his character doesn't have it. He has a psychotic breakdown.
@@KamilBuffenmyer its literally the title of the movie
@@thinkinyblinko6666 yeah it is the title of the movie. It is however very wrong. It shows more of a psychotic breakdown than a psychopath. Look it up.
The “bad boy 😩” part always gets me

He literally is
Omg he’s so quirky
Ikr ^w^
He just a quirked up white boi goated with the sauce bussin it down sexual style
that's one word for it
Let's see Paul Allen's quirks
@@amadeusagripino6862 i looked up his quirks, they’re mind blowing
The editor of this video understands the humor of American Psycho, and it's brilliant.
every time the two women are making out and hes just giving a speach abt whitney houston always cracks me up💀idk why-
When the boss asks if I have worked today:
Maybe
I don’t know
Not really
when your supervisor asks you if you know how to solve differential equations
this movie is a comedy gold.
One might even say that it was a laugh riot
i mean at the same time it was supposed to be philosophical and not funny cause of the blood and stuff, but still its hilarious
@@hyron3798 It's both and I don't understand why people keep saying that it's not supposed to be funny. Both the writer and the director said that it's funny. The director said she kept cracking up during filming. Can't a movie be funny and still have deeper meaning?
@@asukalangleysoryu6695 then why did bale say that it wasnt supposed to be funny
whatever man, you think it was supposed to be comedy i dont mind
its not that clear so yeah
@@hyron3798 Where does he say that?
the fact that he is a british individual is very much impressive
Welsh, not British.
@darthkek1953 the Welsh and Scottish are also British, as they live on the island of ‘Britain’. What you meant was that they’re not ‘English’
(Not trying to be a dick just wanted to clear up this misconception)
@@ColeBresnehen I'm English and just messing around. But basically the Welsh are part human part sheep, thanks to years of interbreeding.
“I just want to have a meaningful relationship with someone special” w/ a deadpan delivery while holding a nail gun to the back of someone’s head 😭

I'm gonna start using that line whenever someone asks, "Where are you going?"
Me: "I gotta return some video tapes."
Impressive. Very nice.
Hey, it's me!
@@xxImmortalxx impressive. Very nice. Now let’s see Paul Allen’s UA-cam account.

Whatever Mr. Big Time CEO
I want to see 12 minutes of Patrick trying to get reservations for Dorsia.
I never thought you would do another part, you absolute madlad, hats off to you!
He’s just living in the moment, how can you not love him 🥺
OMG the editing in this is perfect. 😂
I can’t believe Bryce prefers Van Pattens 12 minutes being himself to mine
He’s like a white Light Yagami just more psychotic
Not really lol light killed criminals, Patrick kills, well, anyone
@@theozlander4629 Both are narcissistic aholes and have a weird superiority complex.
While Light has disgust towards criminals, Patrick has it against anyone that doesn't fit society high standards.

2:42 this is Airplane type comedy and some people actually thought this movie was bashing women and not bashing Patrick Bateman Yuppies.
Makes it even funnier when you realize the movie was made by two women 💀
The story of Patrick Bateman shows us how tragical and chaotic some wealthy people can be in real life
We need ''Patrick Bateman being himself for about 13 minutes'' urgently or else someone's gonna become a blood-thirsty murderer with a peculiar distaste for business card comparison.
I was laughing, crying, tumbling, and mumbling as I watched this
"I have to return some videotapes" 💀
Your channel is sufficient Pittsie, lets get a table at Dorsia.
I had never noticed the way he coated his steak in salt without looking at it lol
Lmfao the way he delicately tries to put the knife and fork down and snags the salt before the detective can look up so it looks like he was salting his food when he was gonna eat it unflavored. Which is highly unusual to the average person one to not season but to mimic the people your with to be more likable is crazier.
i’ve been waiting for this, but “put it in the carton” being included made it all worth it
this movie is hardly a thriller it’s the funniest movie ever
It is a pretty good depiction of a narcissist losing it
despite the memes n shit this whole movie is just a masterclass of acting
"oh my god it even has a watermark" will always be my favorite line from him 😭
I just realized that Bateman shot the first building security guard because he walked into the wrong building. A factor of both his psychosis and movie's theme of everyone and everything looking the same. Bateman simply got mixed up which building to go into to, realizes its the wrong one, and kills the security guard witness.
1:29: "I guess you could say I want a meaningful relationship with someone special" as he points some gun-looking thing at the back of her head.
A nail gun
The editing is really impressive and it was so funny to watch, love it !
most incredible acting ive ever seen
"You aren't based, you're mentally ill and need a diagnosis" is a quote I'm adding to my everyday vocabulary
