How it all went down. The Coronavirus Episode. [🎥54🇳🇿]

- Just days before one of the harshest lock downs in the world, we sail to Great Barrier Island off New Zealand's east coast. It was a beautiful place to be locked down, but we didn't know about the drama it would create as A LOT of boaters from Auckland decided to come join us, putting a strain on the local grocery stores and island facilities. The police crack down hard and we get permission to leave, only to be jumped on for moving by authorities halfway to our marina. It's a mess. What a crazy start to a crazy pandemic...

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer." Ten years ago B.K. ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via UA-cam and, by happenstance, created one of the first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids.
OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Covid Free Australia. Videos for all of this to come!

THANKS for watching all. Subscribe and never miss an episode!
Thanks for all the great videos and sharing your adventure. I so enjoy seeing a man being the father and role model for their children that all children should have; I admire you for that.
Wow, thank you. That is a very nice comment. Thanks! ~Seth
This is just such excellent real life documentary of the earliest days of lockdown. Brilliant.
Watching your trip and the covid sequence unfold a year after the fact has made for one of the best expressions of dramatic irony in literature or film! You have the best sailing content out there right now during a time where everyone else is just doing boat fix videos for the last year, ahhaha...
It only gets better from here! We sail to Fiji! So lucky...
What a fantastic episode!
Interesting to see this given what we know today, NZ did great to get through this. Best of luck to you all!
what a captain your are Seth, managing such difficult situation. motivating and keeping the spirit high of your crew , well done mate
We have spent our northern hemisphere winters in New Zealand for over 20 years. The Kiwis are fabulous hosts and, now, dear friends. We were there for the initiation of the lockdown last March. It was a confusing time. We barely got out on a flight to Vancouver on March 29, then home to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. We wouldn't have been allowed to board that flight if it wasn't for my wife's dual citizenship (USA/Canadian). In retrospect, New Zealand did it right with the lockdown. The proof is in the numbers. Less than 2,700 total cases and just 26 deaths to date. We are hoping that we will be able to get back there in 2022. We really missed that beautiful country and our friends this year. The different guidance you seemed to get was understandable given how quickly they instituted the lockdown.
The things you find on UA-cam. Glad the Nook Road grocery delivery service was helpful (& always nice to see a shot of the Hacienda on a nice day).
We loved NZ!
What great kids. One of the boys rode in front of Reese when he was about to take off on his scooter. He apologized to Reese! Incredible. You guys are doing something very right.
Great episode.
I didn't see a green flash on the dolphins. Must have been camera trouble.
excellent video. You really get the feeling of "what should we do, what can we do.."
I didn't think he would but he actually looks better with the short hair.
I love how you always tell the sailing conditions
I can't wait to see what happens next week!
I really felt for you guys in this bid I’m a kiwi and the lock was confusing for me for you live a boards it must of been so frustrating and at times very worrying
Elizabeth is so smart, and grounded, and intuitive, and caring and considerate and compassionate, and adventuresome and tolerant and...... movie star beautiful! Seth, you're pretty cool too. lol Thanks for taking us along. Your sailing videos are entertaining and some of the "Best UA-cam Sailing Videos."
Best comment award! 🥇😎
@@TheSailingFamily Yaaaay!!!
Great Adventure #ROCKSTARS Keep up the great job/joy!
It's really hard waiting a week!!!
So weird seeing the effects of the pandemic from a year behind - Helps give one perspective.
You guys have a knack for story telling. In a way, it's awesome that we still have a whole year of stories to catch up on.
Best Wishes from SA.
oh no! lice again! poor Reese! he physically looked more like his brothers after it was cut. it will grow back ;-) great update! 🦩
So far: damned if you do and damned if you don't. Can hardly wait for next episode.
Yes another awesome video !!
I got out on the last flight from Laos to Bangkok and last flight back to Australia on the 24th March 2020. Crazy times
As you said it was a very confusing time for all - the local residents became concerned about resources which was fair enough - I was bed ridden for three weeks at this time and sick for ten, nearly died imo but couldnt get to see a doctor - to see what your wonderful family was doing at the same time is wild. Of course many others around the world had it worse, a lot worse. I know wherever you are now you will be feeling grateful, as am I. Peace and love!
btw - your reference to feeling like a police state really pissed me off - they were incredibly pleasant and obliging to you and explained your freedoms which were much greater than most of ours here - I will keep watching other vids from you but where the hell is your gratitude, we coulda just told you to leave?
Don’t be pissed off. It’s how we felt at that point - the police were all over the boats on Great Barrier - but that doesn’t mean we didn’t appreciate being in NZ. We are VERY grateful we were there for the start of the Pamdemic, and not at home. The USA botched this one good. And while a few authorities and a few locals were turning on each other, we know this was a small percentage of the population. Overall we could not think anything higher of NZ. That’s how we feel...
Living a somewhat remote life style has been a salvation for us. We live in a log cabin in the Central Oregon Cascades. We travel via camp trailer to even more remote locations in Central and Eastern Oregon. Often with out seeing others for a week at a time. I feel so sorry for those that live in high density cities and depend on close social inter actions. For us it has been more or less business as usual. Love your channel. Enjoy the boys they will grow up way too fast.
I was stationed at the Christchurch international airport for four years with VXE-6 and I loved the place. So beautiful.
Ohhhh noooo not the heir 😭😱 👍🏼 that boy would look good with a pumpkin on his head. All your boys have great DNA
Lice!? Uggggg.
I actually like hearing about the day to day living of liveaboards - how they deal with the everyday problems and issues.
Its amazing to look back a year ago and see how everyone was trying to cope with covid. You made a lot of good decisions. You got the skateboard back but that thing was destined for a double deep six🤣. Great video thank you.👏⚓⚓🌬⛵
Love the Haircut Reese!!
All three of the boys so much alike with their hair short. It will grow out again my dear. I enjoy watching your videos and how much the boys have grown.
Thank you so much 🤗
In the middle of two mountains...intense.
My younger son has a platinum parachute. Thick surfer hair down to his lower back, and if anyone dare touch it he starts going into beast mode. We just lightly trim it once a month or so to keep it even and growing. Its part of his identity as he puts it..
Love the San Fran Giants hat.
Take it easy bud every one is just as confused as you are. This is a whole new world and everyone is trying to figure things out.
My favorite family!
You are so kind!
Now Reese, looks like a fine young man...
Well on his way to adolescents. Teenage years and very early adulthood.
That's bad news about the conflicting advice you received from the police launch crew and Whangarei harbour officials, however, in fairness to all our workers involved with the Covid 19 pandemic measures, the advice issued prior to the Level 4 lockdown was a bit ambiguous in some aspects. You did the right thing sailing on to the Bay of Islands though and I look forward to your next video... Keep up the great work.
I'm old school. I experienced the long and big hair generation. I loved Reese's long, blonde locks; sorry to see it go. But, it will grow back and he's a handsome young lad either way. 😉
Another amazing video. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Thanks for watching!
Yeah I thought about you guys and all of the sailing families we watch on here when all of this was going down. Normal life on dry land was hard enough and I couldn't imagine the headaches you permanent travelers had to face. Back when it all went down last year we still had our Gemini down in the Keys - they closed off the Keys for a month or two but fortunately we owned our slip down in Marathon so we were allowed through the roadblocks to get to our boat. Couldn't bring friends or anyone else with us of course which was a bummer but I didn't want to just leave our boat sitting down there without us maintaining it etc. What a headache. Fortunately we sold her after a couple of months of lockdown and removed that literal anchor from around our necks.
I'm amazed at how dark Rhys' hair was when you cut most of it off (shows how little I know about hair and sunshine). Then 7 mins (of video) later it's grown back to a good, blonde again, length. Well done, Rhys, you were sad, accepted the inevitable, so ran with it. It's the most excited I've seen you since the waterfall on Mitford Sound.
Holy S-- I would do anything for children you made the right choice no matter what the consequence!!!!
thank your for this distraction from mainland (COVID) life
vicarious life
Hot tip if you want to use the radio but don't want everyone to hear you get a hand held ham radio... a boefang radio they can broadcast on a far larger range than any other radio
Actually, we have American radios and they do not have the same channels that we are broadcasting on (Pu'Uhonua used to be an American owned boat). It's a secret! Shhh...
@@TheSailingFamily with a ham radio you can bounce your signal off the moon to half way around the world
Love Reese’s hair ! He looks like his brothers now! So glad to see helmets when skateboarding ! 👍
Screw helmets ! 🤟🏽🤙🏿 skate or die 4lyfe
You were not to stop sailing from the barrier reef to the marina slip ! The barrier reef cops said to get to your destination asap but you decided to stop along the way ! That was your mistake !
Interesting to look back on all those differing rule changes now a year later. Crazy how things didn’t really change as the months went on
FINALLY !!
Equal parts vinegar and olive oil makes a great home remedy for head lice, simply apply after shampoo, working it into the scalp, let stand for a few minutes then rinse out. Repeat in ten days to get unborn nits , then comb out.
Thanks so much for sharing your adventures with us at home. Like you folks we enjoy traveling as well & keep away from high cities & crowds. As of this writing we are in Independence Missouri Ohio bound to see Family & Friends.
Ryan looks great & a fine handsome young man like his brothers. Enjoy your time together as a family for soon they too will be gone & have families of their own. Then, you become like your parents.
Fair winds & safe travels.
Ryse not Ryan.
Rhys, not Ryse. :)
@@TheSailingFamily auto correct drives me crazy at times.🤪
I just saw in an episode that you're originally from Michigan and started sailing around 12 on lakes there. I grew up in NE Ohio (Yep - Go Buckeyes) and started sailing around that age on the frozen lakes on DN-60 iceboats my Dad built (with a little help from me).
Wow. Now that’s a way to learn to sail!
@@TheSailingFamily It's not the tropics, that's for sure. You really have to WANT to sail when it's 0 or -10 and you'll be doing 25-45mph.
I took a college ski trip to Traverse City, MI in1981 I think. The first day it was -40 and the warning sign they put out said wind chill at the top was -101. But I paid for skiing and was going no matter what. BRUTAL - It makes me shiver just thinking about it.
I was pretty happy to go to the Philippines for my first job out of college. From the icebox to the frying pan.
Yeah. Michigan is only for the tough!
Wow! What a fiasco for you all. I can't imagine what is was like when all this went down.
Always like to hear water temps. And what things SMELL like.
Wow Reese, I really liked your long hair but you look so awesome with that haircut dude. Rock on!
Great video family!
I've heard that Tea Tree Shampoo prevents lice.
Love your Channel
To sail or stay is a captain's decision . Made by the circumstances you meet at sea or anchorage , or that you expect . If staying may result in damage or worse , then it's logical to sail to a save place . In my honest opinion that is essential travel .
I am so glad that this is not happening to you as of today! These are rough times, especially for those that are not in their own country and they are suddenly not wanted in the country that they are visiting and have been spending money in.
The police are there to guarantee your safety after you just sailed the Pacific Ocean. 🤣
Yes, they were very worried that we would need help...
@@TheSailingFamily 🤣
Reese looks so grown up now! I can only imagine how tough that was.
Great to see a common sense approach to liveaboards by NZ police. Still let you get groceries and move for weather, along with letting the kids run on the beach to burn off some beans. Fingers crossed we get the same approach in Turkey this summer!
Turning into proper drama. Well done
Solid channel!! Best videos. You handled the NZ harbor police so well. Now...when can we order Archer hats?!
Your wife cracks me up! She was probably correct with the dots not lining up. Those restrictions made no sense other than to make people feel like they are doing something.
Yes and they have continued to NOT make sense, in fact after a year to makes even less sense. Ridiculous lockdown that's hurt everyone FAR worse than the "Rona" ever will.
WOW, crazy but obviously the right decision...
Inspirational
absoultely
Gave a like for, "Yes, I am wearing the same clothes as Yesterday!". The sailing life right there!
I mean that not only sailing life that should be regular life also lmaoo but people like wasting resource jus to have a “clean shirt “
as if you could catch covid on a fricking boat that's crazy
Allowing us to anchor out would have been a whole lot safer than keeping us penned up together in a marina. But we get it, one rule for all. Crazy times.
Here we are a year later and the madness continues!
More like : here we are a year later and NZ for the most part avoided the terrible death toll compared to most other countries. I’m so proud of NZ’s response yep it was confusing at times but it was something we had never done before everyone was learning.
Anyone else notice the police being cooked by the radar?
It's interesting watching this just over 12 months on. For what it's worth I'd have made the same call to move to a safer place, I look forward to the next video to see what happens.
I know this occurred a while back, but keep tree tea oil on hand to add to shampoo. Will never have a problem with lice again.
I would of done exactly the same go in to the marina ,as we know its longer than a 2 week lock down !!!!!! Question how do you keep your windows on the cockpit so bright ,and where do your store them when you not require them example 3/6 mths due to the climate just roll up or put on the boat and lay flat so the windows dont get creased .Im in the canary islands so we have sun/water calcium and to replace is not cheap so tell me the secret please
Rhys looks so grown up with his hair short. He aged like 2 years just like that. And I think he looks way better with short hair. (BTW: Great Welsh name there Rhys, like me!)
Difficult times back then here in New Zealand for sure. I reckon U made the right call. The police gave U the go ahead and the Harbour master / Coast guard tried to over rule a Police decision. BTW I remember those Whangarei Coast guard guys when they gave us a hard time years ago about something very minor. The guy was doing his job but threw his weight around too much ! Ha ! Thx ~ Paul (AKA FOILNZ on Insta)
Wow he looks amazing
great show guys
Seth, be careful using those goggles you used when diving down for your skateboard. They are designed for surface use. When you dive down with them, you have an air space right over your eyeballs that you cannot equalize. It's not uncommon for people to come up from that depth and have what appears to be a black eye from the googles sucking up against your eye and ripping blood from those little blood vessels around there. But not likely to do permanent damage at that depth. There is a reason scuba divers and snorkelers wear masks that also cover our nose, that allows us to equalize that air space in the mask so that doesn't happen. Be careful!
Very good point. I hadn't thought about that...
Love the haircut! 😊
Thank you!! 😁
Love the Tigers hat! Go Detroit!
Pu'uhonua is Hawai'ian for "place of refuge". Fitting for this episode, don't you think?
It's a very cool name.
Great new hair Reese! 💟
Unless you were at least 14 days at sea with no contact with anyone outside of your boat, the Marina authorities had every right to either bar you from entry or have you go to the quarantine dock and isolate for 14 days. Every marina except for possibly in Martinique would expect no less. As for weather, we should all try to stay out of it, but being at anchor in a sheltered island for 45 knots of wind, in a Cat especially, should be easily bearable. Just my opinion. I take full responsibility for the weather encountered of where I decide to sail to.
The Police and the Marina said we could sail from GBI to the BOI Marina. So we did.
thank you
Gosh this is so interesting to see back to how we all were when the pandemic hit and the reactions of different authorities struggling to get clarity on rules when there are so many differing situations. NZ is my country and I hate to think you weren’t welcome at GBI which I’m sure it was out of fear and lack of knowledge about cruisers but still people need food so I’m a bit disappointed you were made to feel unwelcome. Not surprised at all with the lady in Whangarei (Fung-Ah-Ray) offering to drive your groceries to her home, now that sounds more like it to me. I’m sure Aunty Jacinda would have been understanding about your decision to keep your whanau (far-no) (family) safe. But uh oh looks like the 2020 “unprecedented” curse could be about to affect you in your next video eek! Loved seeing you guys being able to go to shore with the kids and explore. I tell ya it was a much better situation than friends of mine who were in that lockdown and their doggies who couldn’t even get out for a walk. But worth it to keep the country safe. This narrative is going to be interesting!
It was for us too. It's amazing we had no masks at first! And that no one really knew how dangerous it was or how it was transmitted. Or how the rules applied to different situations. Crazy times!
Sorry i see its gone political , Wasn't meant to be but you can see the depth of feeling over the subject in NZ ,I think ill have to give this land lubing up again & head to sea . Miss it a lot . Oh well back to the lawns , You any good on lawn mower motors ( Give me a yanmar any time}
I dig the mullet!
Man this has to be such a hassle. Dealing with cops always seems to be some lies or very different rules. Best of luck guys
"It's feeling too much like a police state"? A year later and we're coronavirus free here in New Zealand and life has returned to normal, thanks to the majority of kiwis willingly following the rules and doing what needed to be done to keep our friends and families safe.
Yes, we agree they did the right thing to lock down hard.
Yep ... welcome to the age of paranoia. If you go up the hill, the wind may take the virus and infect everyone in New Zealand :/
Every day you got conflicting information ... crazy. Was the same here in Australia, common sense left the room.
Yeah gotta admit that was a bit on the nose but that’s what you felt like for you so we’ve got to put ourselves in your shoes at that time back then and probably not realising then just how good it was to be policed like that and how effective NZ was in containing the virus.
@@markx4106 NZ at level 4 stopped any risk activities, like long hikes, risky mountain bike rides, climbing mountains, water skiing, diving, etc to eliminate any accidents needing emergency help and putting pressure on emergency services and our hospital systems. Hence the next day police advised to stay on the beach. Remember at that time no one knew what the future held for the hospital system.
Wow, what a load of crap! That's not what I am hearing from my friends who live in NZ! Your economy is in the toilet, Jacinda the unjust is roundly despised by all but the Māori's and dole dippers. Nothing lives in a vacuum but politicians! The virus WILL come to New Zealand and it will go through your population like stupidity goes through your politicians!
Just use salsa and garlic salt in lieu of Guac Mix!!!!
You both should race. I want to see who is faster...🤣😂
Trust me. We do!
I love your sun glasses, the ones with clear frame. What name/brand are you using?
Those are Oakleys. Loved them (past tense) :(
3mm shorty, a few kg of weight, and some fins would have made that a little easier (and more comfortable). Are you really not carrying any snorkeling gear onboard?
We have all that but it was just a quick dip because we knew where the board was. But good points!
You had the PERFECT spot why did you move in the first place?
I think we covered that. There was too much drama with the locals not wanting the boaters there, the police were all over us, and the wind was picking up so we wanted to get to our marina. We were told we could go, so why not?!
@@TheSailingFamily oh yes you did mention the locals were being grumpy, be safe out there everyone is scared and making weird rules.
You're wife is really adorable.
I'm lost. Why is this a more than a year behind?
We’re just catching up. About a month is covered in each episode.
Bigger refrigerator????
New Zealand police has some big ass boats
They do a lot of rescue things with the harbour masters and dive squads.
He looks sooo much older...good looking kid....but I still like the long blond hair...🤔👍😁
He's adorable with the short hair. He looks older 😳 lol
Crazy! Meanwhile, in the USA people do whatever they want and cases keep rising. Not good either.
Lol very odd time thats going to last a lifetime
