  • Could it be wrong to help children in need by starting an orphanage? In this eye-opening talk about the bad consequences of good intentions, Tara Winkler speaks out against the spread of orphanages in developing countries, caused in part by foreign donors, and details the harm done to children when they are separated from their families and left to grow up in institutions.

Overpopulation isn't a set number. Overpopulation is really people vs resouces and resource disruption. Basically, the current technology is what mainly dictates overpopulation. In many ways, we are overpopulated. In others, we aren't overpopulated.

I am talking about childfree people they have many different reasons to become childfree some are doing it for environment and some are not doing for environment like breaking an abusive cycle that brought damage to every each generation from past to present one decided to stop it, never give mental health problems, diseases and many hereditary problems to children better live with one self.

I looked up how to open a orphanage and came across this video. My mind is absolutely blown in a good way. Since I was young I said I wanted to have multiple orphanages to help the children of the world who had no parents. So to hear that the majority of orphanages are just children’s residential institutions is what I needed to hear but also heartbreaking for me. You’re making me look deeper at the root cause of the problem and so now my mind is on how do we help these families stay together so they don’t have to feel like they have to give away their children?

This is a great speech and I understand what's being said, but the unfortunate reality is that for most developing countries foster care is not viable. When I was growing up I was unable to be with my own family because of abuse and neglect and youth homes kept me off the streets 90% of the time. When I didn't have a roof over my head I almost died from hypothermia.
In a perfect world there would be no need for orphanages, but then again there would be no need for foster care either. Also, those "orphanages" that commit terrible crimes, as mentioned in the speech, are not orphanages. They are criminal enterprises and should be viewed as such.

Give more incentives for families in these developing countries like food, housing and jobs to help support their children. Like other euro/ american countries. The only reason the children are in orphanages is because the parents or parent felt like they couldn't support the child that they would be better cared for somewhere else. Give foodstamps, lower income housing and steady cash income. It's easy really.

However I never thought that money, as silly as it sounds, would end up creating this "booming" business. What now? I don't know, because I can't stand by and watch anyone suffer. So am I to neglect them just so I won't end up helping non intended beneficiaries too? This past day I have given this a lot of thought, without a outcome that can answer your question. Foster care is kind of like an orphanage, but usually smaller. In a foster care, the idea is to create a more family like environment for the orphans. Such as giving kids chores, having parents, foster siblings. Foster care can also be corrupt and have terrible foster parents... Its obvious going to school in a smaller class will be better, because the teacher can pay attention to you more vs. a regular public school class, 34 kids. Maybe the idea is same.

Foster care and orphanages are different in many ways but share a similar problem. Foster care can be as good or better than being adopted but it can also be just as bad as the worst orphanages. It isnt regulated highly enough in America. The rate of abuse whether its mental, physical, and/or sexual is still horrific.

@@Hipp1062 Unfortunately Foster Care is not always a feasible option in developing countries. It's barely an option in the United States. Even if there are no "Orphanages" in the United States I lived in a variety of youth homes because I didn't have family to stay with. If it wasn't for those homes, I would have lived on the streets more often than I was. I almost died of hypothermia because I didn't have a home.

I am remembering being in college an going to Stella Maris Orphanage. It was too much to take in at the time. I had joined the United States Navy Reserves as a junior in High School and went to Boot Camp that summer. I noticed the barracks like atmosphere of the orphanage but didn’t make the connection. My childhood was with unloving parents and it was not until I became a parent that I experienced the love of parent and child. Only a few days ago we learned about mass graves at a residential school in Canada. The very religion that condemns birth control is responsible for the suffering and death of children. We humans.

I would caution people not to form opinions on the basis of what you hear from this woman. There is a study where people were asked about their experiences growing up in an orphanage in the US. It was common that people characterized the experience as a positive one. They came out of a chaotic background that had badly wounded them. The orphanage was an island of stability. I know of a women who spoke of growing up in a series of foster homes. There is no permanence. The people that take in children are often just doing it as a sideline to make a few extra dollars when short. Every time the child moves on to a new home is taken as a new rejection because there is something unlovable about them.
Marilyn Monroe was abandoned as a child. She saw a series of foster homes growing up and she was deeply wounded by the experience. Her desperation to be loved is why she created the false persona we know.

So much research has gone into child raising that we can do better. I lived in the UK, i want less adoption here and fostering should be banned. Paying so much to foster carers which should be spent on quality children homes. 3rd world problems are huge, need to start at the top.

It's true that many child protection systems in the developed world are very broken. When we are working in developing countries with emerging child protection systems, we are making sure that we don't replicate these same broken systems. It's always best to try and source foster families from within the child's existing network - a family who the child already has an existing relationship with - and then ensure the foster parents have the necessary child protection training, parenting skills training and lots of ongoing follow up support from social workers and a network of foster parents. It is, of course, imperative that foster parents pass a criminal background check too.
Foster Care should always be an absolute last resort, after exhausting all other possible solutions, including kinship care options.
To sum it up, institutional care of children is harmful no matter how high the standard of care. But when foster care is done well, studies have proven it has good outcomes for children in need of alternative care and even help children to recover from the damage done from institutionalization - www.bucharestearlyinterventionproject.org
If the millions of dollars currently being sent over to orphanages were redirected to funding family-based care initiatives, we could ensure we had sufficient high-quality foster care available to children in need of alternative care.

The US DOES have a problem with adoption, as well as with "orphanages" simply because they changed the damn name to group homes. If you enacted a law FORBIDDING adoption outside of the country unless you've already adopted someone in the states, then you simply should not adopt! The people over there have it worse than we do, and the way this nice lady told us about it all from their perspectives, then as a human being shouldn't we follow suit?

"Family based care is ALWAYS better than placing a child in an institution." Not true - it depends on the institution they're going to and the "family" they came from... Some institutions are actually relatively well-run and a net positive for the children, and some "families" are just as abusive as certain dysfunctional institutions that are cited periodically in the press, etc.

The problem with her perspective is that she has found only the problems with one area of what happens when families are failures in some way. I wish she had looked more into the problems with government and NGO control of children's lives. Why didn't she answer the big question as to why those parents allowed their children to be taken from them? Why didn't she look more closely into the body of knowledge available on these issues before heavily weighting her recommendation in that direction? Orphanages ARE bad and are not the answer, but there are other models that do work in those same areas, such as opening day schools where children in poor families can get a decent education, food, clothing, health care. These supports can help their families that do exist. Governments and NGOs can be just as corrupt, by the way, and they would be running those programs she's talking about.

Great talk and of course we need to move long term towards replacing orphanages with foster care and other systems. Yes of course orphanage voluntourism has serious problems. But that doesn't mean we should turn our backs on orphanages. Orphanage voluntourism doesn't really exist in the Dominican Republic, though orphanages do. BeachCorp plans to start operations in June 2019 and sales in June 2018 and won't do orphanage related projects at the beginning. Still one day we do hope to help kids in orphanages with scholarships: from young kids 5-6 all the way through college.
Here's our take on this issue. www.beachcorps.com/blog/orphanage-voluntourism

Yes, but this system can be applied in maintaining a one child policy. The problem is greed which results in extreme levels of inequality compromising everyone's existence.

*To be fair, the idea of getting rid of orphanages was discovered like a hundred years ago or something.* This lady was not just educated to know anything about the issue, so she has spent years in vain until she has rediscovered the basic idea that is taught in social studies schools from the get go.

I started becoming aware of poor families just dumping their kids on whoever will care for them after watching "Tashi and the Monk." Such a sad reality...

As do I, and I'm not giving up on that dream. If she talks about corruption, yes, wherever money goes corruption will tend to follow. If you plan to start an orphanage one day, it's your choice to make your orphanage to be the best that you can. Free it from prejudice and corruption, providing children with the emotional and family support.

The poverty is caused by the control (socialist or communist) economies in these countries. The answer is free market economies, clearly defined property laws, and less intrusive governments. Read Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell (available on Amazon in either book, or audio book).

So all we have to do is end poverty worldwide so families can take care of their own children? Great. Let's do that.

It is considerably more cost effective to support a child in family-based care. If the millions of dollars currently being donated to orphanages around the world were redirected those children, and many other vulnerable and at-risk children, could be cared for in family-based care.

Wherever there is movement of money there will be corruption. If we donate millions to orphanages, we get corrupt orphanages. If we donate millions to family-based services, we get corrupt family-based services.
The example that Tara gave was of a woman who was able not only to support her family but to fund their university education. If you do that on a worldwide scale for all at-risk children to the point where we no longer need child care institutions, then you have cured poverty. If that example is relevant, she is talking about solving poverty worldwide forever. Millions of dollars is not going to do that. No charity is going to it. It would take hundreds of billions per year, which is hundreds of billions more reasons for the corrupt to intercept it.
You can only get there by developing the economy of the country so they can provide services paid for by taxes.

The term orphanage is not limited to children with deceased parents. As defined in the Cambridge dictionary, An orphanage is a residential institution devoted to the care of orphans-children whose biological parents are deceased or otherwise unable or unwilling to take care of them. Children who live in the streets or street children are usually brought to a non government organization ( NGO) where they are provided with their basic needs such as residential care, food, clothing, medical care and hospitalization ( when needed ), recreation, spiritual and character/ values formation, community service, and education One foundation in our country, i.e. Philippines has a foundation that provides total care to 300 poor, orphaned and /or abandoned, neglected children plus 700 community based poor children. These children are ages 9 to 17 upon point of entry. Its Vision is Children redeemed from helplessness and empowered to choose right. I would like to extend an invitation to you to come and visit this center.

Ayyy Xoxo No? If you're in bad circumstances you're not obligated to be grateful. There's always going to be someone worse off than you, it's not healthy to never realize it could be better as much as it could be worse.
