- There are lots of smaller regional airlines in the United States who operate flights on behalf of larger airlines, but can you guess how large this operation is?

As a pilot for Skywest, this is a good simplified explanation of how it at all works.
Is that why a lot of mainline pilots call you guys regional pukes?
Skywest is trash. Hope you find that mainline job soon

@@forevergrateful4743 nah, dk what your talking abiut
This can backfire on the legacy carrier. The “United” incident where the passenger was roughed up was actually a Republic flight operated for United Express, but the media just reported it as a United flight.
Yeah. Especially since I have flown with United so many times and never had a bad experience.
@@K4Ediamond yes- it seems to me that any company as big as the legacy carriers are going to have mixtures of good and bad such that broad brush generalizations are largely unfair.
I'm actually glad someone mentioned this, cause United took all the hate for that incident when it wasn't even a United flight, realistically speaking and Republic honestly just got lucky because of how this system works. It's funny though because despite that incident, Republic is actually a pretty good airline and they were one of few to survive the pandemic while many others, some of which were even listed or shown in this video, are no longer with us.
Very true. When an Air Asia flight crashed about 7 years ago I mentioned to people it was from the Indonesian franchise of Air Asia. My upcoming flight was on the Malaysian based brand. 3rd World (?) versus 2nd World (?) safety regulations and standards was the basis of my argument/debate but it got messy/insulting. So I flew as scheduled and had a wonderful week (🥤). 👍 from regional Australia
Somewhat it makes sense, the flight operates under United brand for United, so it means they hired a wrong partner. The flight was overbooked, which is a failure of both, but mostly United, as it is their system. Yes, it was not their crew, but still responsibility is on them.
To be honest… regional airliners are kinda cozy
Really good explanation. I get asked these questions often and this video spells it all out nicely
Excellent and informative video! Thanks for the hard work!
Love this video, a successful youtuber in the making
It's true! This work is Wendover and Half as Interesting quality! WOW!
Really nice informative video! Thanks
Bro I'm shocked you're making Wendover Productions quality videos if not higher quality, and you only got 200 subs. You're gonna grow to a million subs just keep going, I love your videos!
Great vid!
well made and informative. great job
Please go more into the regional carrier business model and why major carriers outsource to regional carriers. You explain things very well, keep up the good work!
Thanks! It's been a while but I have another script in the works
Your stuff is good if and you post regularly you could get as big as @wendoverproductions

Do consider discussing both FFD and risk flying and mainline owned but regional operated aircraft and the scope clauses that govern these relationships
Yes; also interesting would be additional discussion of the 76 seat cap by regulation which governs the pilot rules under union contracts, etc. That rule is why CRJ-900s and ERJ-175s are 76 seat planes.
If it wasn’t for these special rules and the 11 regional carriers that operate under them, much of the 61% of America discussed would be without air service.
very underrated video you just earned a sub
300th like, and 92nd subscriber, you deserve at least 100k subs.
Really high quality video, couldnt distinguish it from a channel with like 800k subs
I'm a flight attendant for Skywest. Absolutely love my company. We keep business travelers moving. The King of Regional Airlines.
Sorry, but no one cares about the regionals.
@@TB-um1xz tell that to the business traveler and have a blessed day.
@@MsAries1968 Exactly! They don't care. As long as you get them to their destination, that's all that matters. Tell me, how do I buy a ticket on Skywest website? I'll wait.
@@TB-um1xz We are large enough to be a mainline but make more money leasing to mainline. We are the only Airlines that made a profit entire pandemic no furloughed employees and we recieved bonuses all 4 quarters. I could go to mainline but choose to work for a company that's more like a family. Besides that I fly for free on absolutely every carrier. We have the best benefits in aviation.
@@MsAries1968 First. You don't fly for free, I'm sure you have to pay an enrollment fee. Plus you fly standby, I flew for the regionals for 5 years. Try and fly between ATL and MCO during the busiest time of the year. Second. Don't try and act like "mainline." Who really owns those planes? If one day AA, DAL, and UA decides to park your planes, what happens to you then. The regionals are just puppets. Being told what to do and how to whipsaw each other.
Well done
In short, the large carriers created regional airlines as ununionized gatekeeper companies to eliminate worker pay and benefits to maximize profit.
Right - if they hadn’t, they couldn’t make money on regional routes resulting in very limited service or extremely high fares, like the old days.
Yea flight attendants work over 90 hours a month and barley make enough to survive. It’s so sad
Except most of the regional airlines are unionized too.
@@saxmanb777 No, all of them have no unions. The major air carriers created them as airlines for nonunionized macpilot jobs.
@@Wilhuf1 I worked for a regional airline for 12 years. I was definitely in a union. I even volunteered for it. Only one regional airline in the US doesn’t have one for its pilots, Skywest. The rest do have unions, mostly with Air Line Pilots Association, or the flight attendants with the AFA.
In Ireland (before stobart air went bust) Aer Lingus Flew Filghts Around The Country Under "Aer Lingus Regional" Operated by Stobart just like in The US
Hello, I have a question. What software did you use for the map you got in 0:18? I am just curious. Thanks!

What is the difference between the mainline airline and regional airline ?
wow!!! you deserve so much more subs, when you have 80000 i'll say i was here since 80
few months from now... this channel will have over 100k subs... just wait and watch
Doubt it. Aviation channels tends not to get that many subs. Unless you're a pilot traveling the world.
"Smaller city..." proceeds to show 1 city that is over twice as large as the other...
recently i flew round trip between BDL and DCA. large text was American Eagle. what was the regional carrier?
Yes! American does not fly any American eagle branded planes
It was Envoy Air en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Envoy_Air_destinations
@@benjaminpitman2980 more likely PSA. Depends what type it was, if it was an E175 it was Republic or Envoy, if it was a CRJ it was PSA
As an Alaskan Airline employee for 4 years, I like this video! Great explanation!
The Sky King Lives
☑️
Regional airlines are when they serve you dope.
Two syllables Pied Mont
... see that the flight number has four digits, nod your head sagely, knowing you're about to get on a commuter jet...
Small youtuber btw I'm not flex tho
"a small city" - Cincinnati... instant dislike lmao
The stingy honey unsurprisingly accept because napkin curiously whistle aboard a scattered low. quickest, royal clock
why make an aviation video if you can’t pronounce Piedmont?
How is this not false advertising? Most of the traveling public is unaware of this. Deceptive at best. This practice should be illegal
Its disclosed on the ticket and on the side of the plane in 2 inch font you will see a disclosure stating operated or proudly operated by psa/envoy/endeavor/skywest/commutair/republic/piedmont/gojet/horizon/skywest not include the three regions that have closed since the beginning of the year compass, transtates and express get, so yes gojet airlines is the only part of transstatesholdings still in business although gojet looks likely to fail right now.
Theyre not unaware, plane has a fucking operated by xxx on the side
Not illegal to outsource and contract services to other companies is it?
who the hell cares? why would it impact your flying behavior?
I just bought a ticket on American Airlines. It very clearly states, in the app, that the 2nd flight in the itinerary is "Operated by PSA Airlines as American Eagle." The only thing that matters is that I get to my destination.
