IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte - The Legend Of Y-29 (Short Film)

  • Operation Bodenplatte launched on January 1st 1945, was an attempt by the Luftwaffe to cripple Allied air forces. The goal of Bodenplatte was to gain air superiority during the stagnant stage of the Battle of the Bulge.
This short film is not 100% historically accurate as no Mustangs were shot down during the battle over Y-29. The battle lasted over 40 minutes. The airplane skins do not match those of the actual pilots.

@@admiralinvertebrate5649 I’d really like to see it again but can’t find it anywhere. Luckily the history channel has been uploading full dogfights episodes to their channel so keep an eye on them, they’ll hopefully upload it in the future. You might also be able to download the history channel app and use the free trial to watch it there. I did that for the battle off Samar episode and canceled it before the trial ran out. It scratched the itch I had for re watching the episodes for a while until they uploaded them here

I agree that the video portion of this film is amazing, probably the best IL-2 - or any other - I have seen. Unfortunately the dialogue is so ridiculously horrible that I can't watch it again unless I mute the audio. Whoever wrote it must be in love with the typical Hollywood crap that infects most war flicks. Pilots who had diarrhea of the mouth like these, broadcasting a play-by-play account during a mission, would be chewed out and grounded for violating radio discipline. The early radios in these aircraft only permitted one-way communication, so any time you punched your mike button to speak you blocked anyone else from transmitting. That could be fatal to one of your other pilots who was under attack and couldn't be alerted because of some idiot's running commentary of the action.
    The right way:
"Bandits 3 o'clock high" "Break, Blue 4, BREAK!!" "Red flight, follow me down" "Four 109s, 10 o'clock low" "White leader here, form up and steer 170 for home"
The wrong way, as in this film:
" What do we do? Continue on, or do we jump them?" Hmm, I dunno, let's take a vote. Should a fighter pilot fight?
"Max power!" I really appreciate being commanded to speed up or slow down.
"Heads on a swivel! Watch your six!" Thanks again. I thought I was only supposed to look straight ahead.
"I'm on one." "Damn! Wasted all my ammo!" Very considerate to keep everyone posted.
"John C. Meyer, remain on the runway." I guess by this time of the war the AAF dropped call signs in favor of using a pilot's full name, including a middle initial. Probably made them feel less disenfranchised and increased their self-esteem.
"John, we've got bandits coming right at us." No need to tell us from which direction. We'll figure it out from the path of their tracers, or where their bullets strike our planes.
"Second to none, let's do this!" Go team, go!
"There's too many of them!" Too many for what? Please elaborate before you wipe yourself.
"I can't get a clear shot!" How dare you try to get away. Slow down and fly straight and level.
"Stay on his tail!" No, I'm gonna break off and try a 90 degree deflection shot. It's much more sporting.
"Don't push your engine too far!" Roger, Captain Obvious.
"Splashed another one!" Yep, really, at 5:53. Must be a lost Hellcat pilot.
"Watch those enemy fighters." No thanks, I'd rather daydream.
"Your engine's smoking!" Oh, OK. I thought I was skywriting.
"Canopy's stuck! I can't..." Thanks for explaining as you fly into the ground.
"That's the ace who's been tearing us apart." I'd recognize that speck anywhere.
"Arr, you're not getting away from me!" You need to switch over to the Luftwaffe channel and let him know.
"My engine's hit!" "Go easy on the throttle." You mean this lever that doesn't work any more?
"Excellent work, pilots." Dammit, disenfranchised again.
"...requesting landing approach." John C. Meyer, it's the one you departed 14 minutes ago and have been using for 3 weeks.
And my favorite: "Happy New Year, Nazi bastards!" You big meanies.
As far as "BASED ON A TRUE STORY", it's been well documented that on January 1st, 1945 the 352nd Fighter Group scored 23 confirmed kills without any losses. So just ignore the fake part showing two Mustangs being shot down with one pilot killed and think of this as "KIND OF BASED ON A TRUE STORY". But I'm sure Hollywood would go with the original title.

    • @acerawlings4351

Thank you for your feedback. I decided to go the more hollywood approach to this short film to have a little more fun with it. As a history buff, I am very familiar with how actual communication would be done. As both a pilot and film maker, I decided to have more of a creative license for this film as a more realistic interpretation I feel could be done better in a live action film (such as Dunkirk). I am also aware that no Mustang's were lost during the battle, as stated in the description, however I do recall one being forced to land due to damage. I appreciate your input and hope you enjoyed what you saw!

@@acerawlings4351 Thanks for being a good sport. (Anyone know what that even means any more?) I loved what I saw but didn't like what I heard at all. Yeah, I get the creative license approach, but the dialogue was beyond over the top. Graham Chapman should have suddenly appeared in the middle of this, dressed in his British army colonel uniform, ordering "Stop this, stop this! This is much too silly. Either rewrite this or I will be forced to terminate this film. Right! Now get on with it!" Ah, one can only dream...

A little more attention to historical accuracy would have made this episode first rate. My father was Lt. Alden Rigby and flew White 4 in Col J. C. Meyer's flight. No Mustangs were lost in this fight and only one was damaged by enemy fire.. The actual markings of the 390th FS, 366th FG shouldn't have been too hard to come by. Some will view this excellent visual and think that the history is correct.. Perhaps instead of the disclaimer at the beginning, "Based on an actual event", take the next step and tell the actual story.
