    after seeing all these daring flights here today, it would be interesting if you guys did the story of Lt. Col Tullia who was not only part of the Package Q attack on on Baghdad, but also had a death defying escape of the city where he was chased by 6 separate missiles. It would be great to see more modern stories like that one as there are many that are somewhat forgotten with how fast the modern pop culture media moves on from story to story now.

    The F4 guys deserve more... they literally risked instant death to save their bros in arms, ejecting into warzone along with them, despite the fact that they could escape to the tanker if they did not care. That was super in skill, in will, in wits, and in loyalty. They deserved more!

    During ww2 the Americans built some insanely sturdy planes able to shrug off insane amounts of damage. It's one of my favourite parts of ww2, learning about all the different pilots and crews that were able to make it home just because of how strong and well built their machines were.

    • @12pagani
      @12pagani 11 місяців тому +2

      I absolutely agree, especially stories of p47 jugs and f4u corsairs. Those huge radials could still fly with whole cylinders shot out, just amazing. But I’ll admit the 109 and the 190 where amazing warbirds and the 109 had a special ability, it could survive extended negative g loads due to the molybdenum added to the engine oil. So the engine wouldn’t seize from 0 oil pressure as the moly coated the engine parts. We use it in cars today. But the liquid cooling was a huge weakness for all aircraft in the war

    Also, I think Gen. Chuck Yeager was "technically" the first two Schwalbe kills when he was lost from his group and happened upon one on approach and another just leaving the ground.

    Some of these were done by the History channel back when they first aired DOGFIGHTS! but these give a little more detail on the pilots involved.
    One of the interesting Sabre vs MIG instances involved post-combat where an F-86 pilot had lost his engine due to damage & one of his wingman would carefully use his engine intake (which is in the direct front) to push on his tail cone. Impart some extra air speed then back off then repeat as needed until both had safely landed.

    I love how it goes in historical order, starting with WW2 and ending up in the modern time. Great choice on that, Yarnhub!

    The narrator says that the Libya incident had little political significance, but I remember being 10 years old in 1981, on vacation in Virginia Beach. There were t-shirts on sale all over the boardwalk saying Tomcats or USAF or US Navy 2, Kadafi 0 or the like. (His name was alternately spelled Qadhafi, Kadafi, etc., I no longer remember what was in vogue at the time). Everybody was excited about this. Maybe the carrier the pilots flew from was based in VA Beach/Norfolk, and that was the reason for the excitement.
    Gaddafi at the time, had declared a "Line of Death" across the southern portion of the Mediterranean Sea which went form the Northernmost parts of Libya from east to west along a line following the 32nd parallel, called the Gulf of Sidra. After years of weak foreign policy under Carter, where the hostages in Iran were held for a year or more, and a failed military operation to rescue them went horribly awry, came this incident. People were happy, and I remember it. In my opinion, there was quite a noticeable political impact.
    Reagan was elected in a landslide due to the unpopularity of Carter, and this incident seemed to solidify peoples' opinions that the right choice had been made. It gave Reagan the political clout to continue his foreign policy, eventually leading to the "Strategic Defense Initiative", the fall of the Berlin Wall, and many other historical events. Maybe I was just a naive youth at 10 years old thinking "Cool, we got nice jets" but in my opinion this was a major political shift, and I felt it in real time.
    This, and other incidents like it, lead to the re-election of Reagan. I remember him nostalgically, and would rate him as one of the top presidents ever, however, in retrospect, he added a massive amount percentage-wise to the national debt, 186%. One of his campaign planks was lowering government spending, and a balanced national budget. How he achieved notoriety for doing so while also absolutely NOT doing so is a mystery to me. He did lower inflation and unemployment though, and was extremely popular, perhaps in part due to surviving his assassination attempt at the hands of John Hinkley JR.

    I can't believe they dismanteled the "All American". A B-17 with such an amazing story should have been a museum piece.

    I had an uncle who flew P-51s over Germany during WW2. And was credited with shooting down an Me-262 as well. He'd been shot down and managed to make it back to England. But continued to fly missions over Europe afterwards. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager was his name. I am proud to say I am related to that great pilot. He had to before the man himself, to get permission from Gen. Isenhower himself to get permission to continue the war, or go home to the States. But he got this before he even became an ace in a day during the war. Oh yeah- I saw the cat as the German pilot bailed out and landed in the trees, before the blue cat jumped back into the trees.

    I had a first date in like a year. We took a long beach walk with both our dogs. It was a awesome afternoon. Just talking and laughing and afterwards we got a drink on a beach bar. She has self esteem, high moral standards and is tall. ( I’m 7’1”, she 6’10” 😊). There is still hope guys, the good lady’s are it dead yet.

    I don't think that German saluting Johnson was doing so out of disrespect. Sounds like he was more impressed that the plane was still goddamn flying after being absolutely peppered to hell, as if to say both times "I respect you're still flying, but this time it's goodbye" until he ran out.

    The military painted the Tuskegee guys tails red to make them easy targets. So the Tuskegee guys just shot down the enemy.
